Chapter 5: Sub-Female Roommate
By the time the enlistment notice reached his optical computer, Constant had already arrived at the training camp entrance and presented his identification to the sentry.
“Private Ellex.” After verifying the documents, the other party nodded to another military female bug beside him. “Welcome to the Imperial Legion. Fight for the Empire, fight for glory!”
The sentry placed his right hand over his heart in a salute, and then Constant was led by the other military female to a nesting chamber. This burrow, which could only accommodate two people, was not a high-quality environment, but it was an improvement compared to being imprisoned in an iron cage in his past life.
His roommate was a sub-female who radiated an aura that practically screamed “do not approach.”
Most sub-females with such exceptional appearances would not choose to enter the military; instead, through family upbringing and their own advantages, they would choose a reliable male lord to depend on upon reaching adulthood. But the sub-female before him was not like that.
“I’m Ellex. It looks like we’ll be roommates from now on.” Having been born into nobility and cultured by his family and school, Constant understood very well how to use language to reduce the distance others felt toward him. “You likely have a beautiful name; I wonder if I have the honor of knowing it?”
The sub-female remained silent for a moment before shifting his gaze from his book to Constant’s face. “Get lost.” His father had warned him long ago about military life: if a female bug tries to hit on you, eighty percent of the time they just want to play around. You don’t need to care about them; if necessary, you can even strike them directly.
Although the female bug before him indeed possessed a face captivating enough to stir the soul, he believed his father’s words could not be wrong.
“Uh!.” This was the first time Constant had encountered such an unreasonable and explosive sub-female. But after a moment’s reaction, he extended his hand to show his partner ring. “I’m married.” He could roughly understand why the other was so resistant toward him.
After all, to a sub-female, a female bug posed a much greater threat than a male lord.
“What does that have to do with?” Bai was originally prepared to offer a sarcastic retort, but he fell into a contemplative silence upon seeing the ring on the other’s ring finger. A partner chip. He knew of this thing, it was a special device meant to allow a male lord and a female bug to monitor each other’s pheromones in real-time.
A male lord could use it to know if a female bug had betrayed him, and a female bug could receive synchronized detection info on whether the male lord had been involved with other species.
Blinking his eyes, Bai finally realized: the female bug before him posed no threat to him; he was merely expressing friendliness.
“Bai.” The baby-faced sub-female stated his name, then set his book aside and proactively reached out his hand to Constant. “Ellex, I heard it just now.” What a relief—he had been paired with a married female bug. Otherwise, he wouldn’t even be able to sleep peacefully at night.
The exquisite face finally revealed a friendly smile, two small tiger teeth flashing white under the sunlight. “I hope we can get along well.”
Constant held Bai’s hand for a second before withdrawing it. “We certainly will.” Having a sub-female as a roommate wasn’t necessarily a good thing for Constant, but if it was Bai, it could actually help him avoid a lot of trouble.
The first day of training was exactly as Nathanael had told him: physical training, specifically running.
Among a crowd of physically powerful female bugs, Constant and Bai won the “illustrious” achievements of last and second-to-last place, and they maintained this brilliant record for an entire month.
A daily 5000-meter sprint quickly caused the two of them to look quite haggard. Under the cover of night, they sat together on the dormitory balcony, looking out at the starry sky.
“Why did you come here?” Bai looked at Constant, who was leaning his head against the railing with his eyes nearly rolling back into his head.
“I want to protect my partner.” Constant’s thoughts finally drifted back, and he regained the ability to think. “Nothing is more important than that.”
“But your partner might have others; is that okay with you?” Male lords could originally have many females and sub-females simultaneously. If conditions allowed, they could even use pheromone induction to claim a female bug as their own right in public.
“He won’t.” Constant raised his hand, his gaze falling on the ring on his ring finger. The sense of security Nathanael gave him made it so he didn’t have to worry about such issues at all.
“What about you? Why did you choose to come here?” For a sub-female as beautiful as Bai, Constant was certain there must have been many male lords scrambling to show him favor, but clearly, the other disdained it.
“I don’t want to get married.” Why must a sub-female find a male lord to be their lifelong anchor after reaching adulthood? Can’t they take their destiny into their own hands?
“I want to become a military female, to become an outstanding warrior like Major General Nathanael!” Although the Major General had a fearsome reputation, it didn’t hinder Bai’s admiration for him at all. “If possible, I wish he would replace his male lord. Although it would affect his reputation and lead to social condemnation, I’ve truly never seen a male lord who catches a fever the day after mating with a female bug.”
The sudden words were like a long blade piercing through Constant’s heart: it turned out the entire Empire now knew that Nathanael’s male lord was “incapable” in that department.
In response, Constant silently clenched his fists. “Is that so? I think they’re a perfect match.”
“If my future partner has such a weak constitution, how would I be any different from a widow?” Bai’s voice carried a hint of lightheartedness and fearlessness. He didn’t notice that Constant’s face beside him had already turned half-black. “I believe being unable to satisfy one’s partner is a very shameful thing.”
Despite being angry, Constant simply could not refute it.
So, after a long silence, Constant used the excuse that “it’s very late now and there is training tomorrow” to run to his bed and bite his blanket, silently quelling his rage.
Fueled by this anger, Constant used all his strength during the next day’s training to surge ahead of Bai, moving from dead last to second-to-last. This was a new breakthrough for him, and it symbolized his disdain for last night’s remarks.
He believed that one day, he would become the first male bug to lead an army and change the entire Empire’s view of him!
With a monthly leave finally arriving, Constant returned home and saw Nathanael, who had also returned from leave.
Although there was the scent of a sub-female on the other, his partner chip had not shown any fluctuations throughout the month. When Constant couldn’t wait to lunge at him, he instantly confirmed the authenticity of the partner chip.
Constant had truly done as he said and stopped visiting places of debauchery; this could be distinguished from the scent of pheromones that were so rich when he was excited they nearly drowned Nathanael.
After last month’s Procreation Day leave, Nathanael had returned to Warship Island. When he passed the defense post, those two military female bugs were saluting him one second, and the next second their legs almost went weak because he was covered in the dense aura of a male bug.
That night, a piece of news spread through his legion.
Nathanael’s male lord had specifically applied for a Procreation Day for him and didn’t even forget to shroud their Major General in his pheromones when letting him return. Such possessive behavior was undoubtedly a show of how much he doted on his female consort.
And this was exactly the effect Nathanael wanted: actually, the military wouldn’t specifically check what they did on Procreation Day, but he simply wanted to be covered in Constant’s scent, symbolizing the other’s complete control over him.
As dawn broke the next day, Nathanael finally fell into a deep sleep with Constant’s permission. For some reason, Constant’s desire this time was actually a bit much for him to handle, as if the other were trying to prove something, causing him to sink into it time and again throughout the night at Constant’s repeated invitation.
After Nathanael fell asleep, Constant pulled him into his arms, burying his face in the neck of his female consort which was now entirely stained with his scent and inhaled deeply. He was not the “useless” male lord Bai spoke of! That wedding night was truly due to the shock of seeing Nathanael die before his eyes followed by the cold wind; he did have the ability to feed his female consort to fulfillment!
He looked at Nathanael’s weary face and kissed the space between his brows again. However, he shouldn’t do this in the future; although Nathanael always indulged him, that couldn’t be a reason to keep demanding more.
Following Nathanael’s biological clock, Constant prepared breakfast before he woke up and imprinted a kiss on his forehead the moment his eyes opened. “Good afternoon, Nar.”
This scene was too dreamlike, giving the recently awakened Nathanael a sense of unreality.
“Good afternoon, El.” Realizing what was happening, Nathanael returned a kiss to Constant’s lips, his trembling eyelashes hiding the stinging in his eyes: he thought he and Constant would never be like this again.
At that moment, his nose suddenly caught a faint aroma.
“You… cooked?” Nathanael was somewhat incredulous as he asked this. Nowadays, which male lord would cook for his female consort? One must know their status simply did not allow them to do such things.
Raising a hand to brush a strand of hair away from Nathanael’s eyes, Constant nodded. For the current Zerg race, there truly wasn’t a single male bug who would do the same as him. In their ideology, showing favor to a female consort was an insult to themselves, and the word “cooking” simply wouldn’t appear in their dictionary. But for a male bug like him, who grew up under a pair of loving bug-mates, it was different…
The female consort is greater than the heavens. This is what his father had once told him: once you have chosen someone, you must use all your strength to be good to them.
His father’s words were not wrong, because upon hearing that he had truly cooked, those eyes that were usually as calm as still water actually trembled.
