- Chapter 7 - The Illiterate Troublemaker
Tear drops as large as beans fell to the ground.
When Wen Qing cried, she didn’t wail like other toddlers. Instead, she hung her head, her small mouth tightly shut, with only tears continuously spilling from her eyes.
If Jiang Man hadn’t glanced up at that moment, perhaps Wen Qing would have finished crying without any of the other toddlers noticing she had been in tears.
“Pwah!”
Seeing her pretty little sister in tears, Jiang Man grew frantic. Like a puppy, she lunged forward, crawling straight toward Wen Qing.
Her heart burned with anxiety, but she had only recently become acquainted with her own limbs, and their coordination was far from perfect.
No matter how hard she tried to speed up her crawling, her newly acquainted limbs seemed to have minds of their own.
Sometimes, she’d get tangled in a stray blanket on the floor; other times, her arms and legs would work against each other, each crawling in its own direction.
From the ceiling camera’s perspective, the struggling toddler resembled a chubby little caterpillar, the clumsy kind.
The adults watched them, silently agreeing not to interrupt. In unison, they raised their phones to capture the heart-wrenching, soul-stirring drama unfolding on the soft carpet: “Romio Man and Juliet Qing”, a tale of toddler affection (scratch that) a tale of tender bonds!
After enduring countless hardships with unwavering determination, the plump little caterpillar finally made her way back to the beautiful toddler.
Reaching out, Jiang Man felt the wetness of tears on her hand.
“Mwah? Pwah!” What’s wrong? Why are you crying?
Jiang Man wiggled her chubby bottom, inching closer to Wen Qing.
Her watery, puppy-like eyes were filled with worry and heartache.
Arching her little body, Jiang Man curled herself into a ball and leaned in to get a better look at Wen Qing’s face.
Even in tears, the beautiful toddler cried with grace.
Only her small mouth seemed to suffer.
Unwilling to let out a sound, Wen Qing had bitten her lips repeatedly. The delicate skin of her lips was now bruised and bleeding!
Jiang Man’s heart ached at the sight.
She raised her chubby little hand to wipe away Wen Qing’s tears, asking in baby talk what was wrong.
But Jiang Man had forgotten: though they were both toddlers, Wen Qing and the others couldn’t understand her unique “Man-zy” baby language.
Her anxious babbling only made Wen Qing’s tears fall faster.
Crying nonstop wasn’t an option.
After a moment’s thought, Jiang Man decided to use all her tricks to cheer her up, but nothing could stem the flow of tears.
Instead, she exhausted herself in the process.
Panting with her little mouth open, Jiang Man turned her head and noticed Fang Jin and Mu Qian, the other two toddlers, hesitating wanting to approach but not daring to.
Jiang Man was puzzled.
What’s going on? Why do Little Chick Feather and Little Professor Bo both look so shocked?
A toddler’s brain isn’t yet equipped for multitasking. The top priority was to comfort the crying Wen Qing.
For the first time, Little Emperor Man tasted the bitterness of ancient rulers.
Taking a deep breath like an adult, the tiny toddler turned her head and unexpectedly met Wen Qing’s gaze who had suddenly lifted her head and leaned in close.
Jiang Man was startled.
Once she recovered, she couldn’t help but marvel at those tear-moistened, magnified eyes up close:
Wen Qing’s pretty little sister truly had the most beautiful eyes!
They resembled a sky washed clean by rain, or a priceless piece of jade-colored glass.
Enchanted, the little admirer leaned her chubby cheek forward, pressing it gently against Wen Qing’s in a tender nuzzle.
Wen Qing, sulking with a pout, made her chubby cheeks appear even plumper.
Jiang Man had been staring, contemplating ways to cheer her up. But somehow, in a sudden rush of impulse, she felt her gums itch and her tummy rumble. The plump little face before her looked irresistibly bouncy and delicious.
Would it be okay to take a bite?
With her stomach growling, Jiang Man stared at the chubby cheeks and instinctively drooled.
Little Man wasn’t a greedy child, she’d only take one bite!
“Rawr!”
Jiang Man pounced, wrapping her arms around Wen Qing’s shoulders, opening her mouth to reveal a few tiny millet-like teeth.
“Mmph!”
A small part of Wen Qing’s cheek was enveloped in a damp mouth, and the noticeable little teeth gently nibbled at the soft skin of the young child.
Wen Qing froze completely.
Tears welled up in her eyes, unsure whether to fall or not, shimmering as they lingered.
With her cheek being nibbled on, Wen Qing felt wronged but stayed perfectly still, letting Jiang Man continue.
Senior Appraiser Ms. Jiang Xiaoman’s review: The pretty little sister’s cheeks are tender, fragrant, and delightfully soft, like milk-flavored jelly.
The strict appraiser, Little Man, was willing to give this chubby face a perfect score plus an extra ten points!
After nibbling for a while, Jiang Man’s disconnected little brain finally came back online.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw the tears shimmering in Wen Qing’s eyes. Instinctively giving one last suck, she quickly let go.
The guilty little troublemaker crept closer to the victim, carefully observing her expression.
But luckily, very luckily.
Victim Wen Qing only sniffled, with no intention of bursting into tears.
The little troublemaker Jiang Man’s anxiously hanging heart finally settled.
But the little sister still needed comforting.
She had been inexplicably upset earlier, and now she’d been bitten.
Just thinking about it, Jiang Man couldn’t help but scold herself in anguish: How could she not comfort her? Isn’t that just too mean? Don’t be a bad kid!
While reprimanding herself, she leaned in and kissed the chubby cheek she had just nibbled, the one with the incredible texture, worthy of 110 points.
Wen Qing was easy to soothe.
After being kissed, the little pearls welling in her eyes stopped threatening to fall, and she even snuggled closer to Jiang Man.
So she was comforted, right!
Fickle-hearted Man turned away, ready to seek out her fellow puppy-like playmates for more snuggles.
Even though the pretty little sister was wonderful!
But!
Playing with puppy friends was the most fun!
Little puppy kids should snuggle with each other!
Noticing Jiang Man’s movement, the silly golden retriever pup Fang Jin also began crawling toward her.
“Grrr!”
The pretty little sister unceremoniously burrowed into Jiang Man’s arms, wrapping her small arms tightly around her, her beautiful eyes filled with vigilance as she stared at Fang Jin and Mu Xi, who were trying to approach. She fiercely asserted her dominance.
Though small, her possessiveness and temper were anything but.
Startled by her, their crawling movements hesitated momentarily.
How could this be! Everyone was supposed to be good friends, loving and playing together!
Poking the little one’s cheek, feral child-rearing expert Jiang Man drew on her past experience raising youngsters and seriously began lecturing the domineering child with a series of earnest babbles.
Even without a shared language, Jiang Man lectured with utmost seriousness.
Wen Qing didn’t understand the words, but that didn’t stop her from keenly sensing the stern, angry aura emanating from Jiang Man.
“Pfft…”
The previously fierce and domineering little one, under Jiang Man’s gaze, slumped her tiny shoulders and pitifully snuggled into Jiang Man’s embrace.
Noticing that the pretty little sister in her arms had truly realized her mistake, Jiang Man nodded with satisfaction.
Holding her phone, Liu Ying watched Manzai sternly lecturing someone and instinctively widened her eyes, feeling as if she were looking at her wife. The mother and daughter looked exactly alike when scolding others utterly adorable.
Liu Ying’s excited mood disturbed the worried Xu Nuo beside her. Xu Nuo turned her head, about to instinctively snap at her, but then remembered her own daughter’s experience of being “returned” just the day before. For the first time, in front of Liu Ying, Xu Nuo swallowed her words.
On the carpet, Jiang Man turned her head and flashed a sweet smile at Fang Jin and the others, who were hesitating to approach. With a cheerful “pfft,” she beckoned them to come over and play together.
But playing was out of the question.
As soon as the four little ones met, their mothers uniformly handed them each a milk bottle.
The moment they caught the sweet scent of milk, all four little tummies rumbled in unison.
Seeing the little ones enjoying their milk so heartily, the shrewd producer naturally wouldn’t miss this golden opportunity. Not only did she assign each child their own camera, but she even crouched beside them to deliver a live endorsement for the milk powder.
Though it seemed like four camera angles, it was actually only three.
Wen Qing clung stickily to Jiang Man, using one hand and both feet to hold her bottle while persistently wrapping her other arm around Jiang Man. From a distance, it looked as if one little one had a tiny acrobat glued to her side.
Little ones can’t eat much, and their appetites are small. After finishing a bottle of milk, they were all full.
After some cuddling with their mothers, the four little ones were carried to the observation room.
The morning’s schedule involved having parenting instructors guide the little ones in learning activities.
This idea had struck the producer during yesterday afternoon’s livestream, when Wen Qing suddenly stood up and wobbled over to Manzai while holding onto a small stool!
How could anyone who enjoys watching little ones cuddle and go about their daily routines resist the charm of clumsy toddlers learning?
A shrewd glint flashed in the producer’s eyes.
As soon as they entered the room, the little ones were greeted by four smiling, gentle sisters.
The real little ones were already used to new friends, and the fake little one wasn’t afraid at all.
Looking at the four chubby, soft little toddlers, the four parenting instructors instinctively broke into doting smiles, pitching their voices higher as they introduced themselves and explained the morning’s game rules.
“Little ones, you’ll each choose a teacher to learn from. Just before noon, there will be a small test. The child with the highest score will get a cute little toy~”
The real little ones didn’t understand, but the fake little one memorized it instantly.
A high-tech-looking button appeared in front of the little ones. The instructor who had explained the rules gently tapped it, and a holographic projection materialized before them.
It even played a classic animation from ancient Earth: Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf!
How could Jiang Man resist this?!
She simply couldn’t!
After understanding the rules, Jiang Man nudged the clingy Wen Qing away, her eyes filled with unwavering determination.
Just a bit of learning! She, Jiang Man, was a fake little one who had once received an admission letter from a 211 university! A tiny test like this would be a piece of cake!
Looking at the three other little ones around her, the fake little one brimmed with confidence!
But the confidence she felt before learning was directly proportional to the headache she felt afterward.
Staring at the character recognition book before her, Jiang Man felt her entire little being drained of energy.
She could clearly understand everything her mother and the others said.
But why?
Why couldn’t she read the characters in this world?!
Could it be that this fake little cub Man was doomed to be illiterate for life?
No way, no way!
