- Chapter 6 - Puppy Man
Jiang Man, who had just been held in her arms moments ago, had now broken free from her embrace. With her little hands pressed against the soft bedding in front of her, she stared intently at someone else.
With a soft “pfft” sound.
Jiang Man’s thoughts, which had been led astray by the “heretical CP” of her mother and Aunt Xu Nuo, snapped back to reality. She turned her head in confusion.
Huh?
She saw Wen Qing pouting exaggeratedly, staring at her unhappily. Her eyes were filled not only with sadness but also with grievance.
What’s wrong?
Seeing the pretty little sister looking so downcast, Jiang Man scooted closer and actively rubbed her cheek against hers.
There, there, no more sadness after a little rub!
Their soft skin pressed together, their chubby cheeks squished against each other, making them look even plumper.
The two rivals, who had just been bickering moments ago, fell silent simultaneously at that moment. They exchanged a glance.
Without a word, both quickly pulled out their phones, aimed their cameras at the two little ones snuggling, and the number of photos in their albums rapidly increased.
But as she continued snapping pictures, Liu Ying noticed something amiss.
Her hands kept taking photos, but her thoughts drifted away.
Logically speaking, since Qingzai was born, she had never left the manor. So why did she seem so adept at comforting other little ones?
This question filled Liu Ying’s mind, but no matter how much she pondered, she couldn’t figure it out.
“Alright.”
Xu Nuo had taken enough photos to her satisfaction and decisively put her phone away.
Noticing Liu Ying’s distracted state, she waved a hand in front of her eyes: “What’s the plan? Should Qingzai stay here, or should we take Qingzai to our room?”
The fake little one on the bed heard Xu Nuo’s words and curiously lifted her head to look at Liu Ying, waiting for her response.
Ever since she became pregnant with Qingzai, Liu Ying had rarely been separated from her for more than eight hours! The afternoon program recording had already taken up four or five hours. If she couldn’t see Qingzai for the entire night.
Just the thought made it hard for Liu Ying to breathe, her heart aching intensely.
She struck a dramatic pose, clutching her chest as she gazed at the little one, then straightened up a moment later. As if switching faces, she coldly and ruthlessly looked at her rival and pointed: “The door’s over there. Qingzai stays.”
Xu Nuo let out a mocking laugh.
She knew it Liu Ying, with her obsession over love and her child, couldn’t bear to let Qingzai go with her.
But that was fine.
Looking at her own daughter, who was so attached to Qingzai, Xu Nuo’s lips twitched.
Before dinner, when Liu Ying had said, “In your family, besides AB relationships, is there also a gene for AA relationships?” Xu Nuo had pretended not to care, but the remark had stuck with her.
She was genuinely anxious now. Once the cameras were off, she planned to video call her wife and ask if there really was a gene for AA relationships in her family!
The thought that she might become in-laws with that wretched girl Liu Ying, and that her own daughter was so clingy and clearly easily swayed by Qingzai, made Xu Nuo feel utterly uncomfortable.
After giving a few simple instructions and seeing Liu Ying still lost in thought while staring at the little ones, Xu Nuo couldn’t help but snort before leaving.
Watching the room door close, Jiang Man struggled free from the pretty little sister’s kisses.
It seemed Aunt Xu Nuo really liked to snort at Mom.
Just today alone, she had snorted so many times!
Liu Ying truly lived up to her title as an award-winning actress with a full sweep of accolades her learning ability was exceptional.
Having only watched Xu Nuo demonstrate once before dinner, she had already memorized most of it. Though her hands were still clumsy, she managed, albeit haltingly, to change the little one’s clothes.
Fortunately, the two little ones were well-behaved, lying on their backs on the bed and letting her handle them as she pleased.
Just as Liu Ying had finished changing the clothes of the two little ones about halfway, she hit a snag.
Frowning, she bent over and looked at Wen Qing, who was tightly holding Jiang Man’s little hand. She spoke softly, “Be good, Qingzai. Let go of your sister’s hand for now, okay? Auntie will help you change into your pajamas first, and then you can hold hands again, alright?”
With jade-green eyes fixed unblinkingly on Liu Ying, the little one made no move, only tightening her grip on Jiang Man’s hand.
Liu Ying tried to separate the two little ones’ hands, but the chubby, short fingers were surprisingly strong. Even though Jiang Man’s skin was turning red from the grip, Wen Qing still wouldn’t let go.
Seeing her mother’s dilemma, Jiang Man turned her head and let out a soft “uh-ah” at the pretty little sister Wen Qing, though she didn’t hold out much hope.
Logically, Jiang Man and the other three little ones didn’t share a common “baby language,” so Wen Qing shouldn’t have understood her.
Surprisingly, after Jiang Man made that sound, Wen Qing stared at her for a long time and actually let go of her hand.
On Jiang Man’s fair, chubby little hand, a vivid red mark was left.
When Mrs. Liu Ying saw it, her heart ached terribly.
While taking the opportunity to change Wen Qing into her pajamas, she silently noted this incident against their entire family in her mind.
“It must be that scoundrel Wen Yu’s bad genes corrupting that troublemaker Xu Nuo’s good genes, making Qingzai overly clingy and obsessive!”
In the room across the hall, Xu Nuo, who was video chatting with her wife, suddenly sneezed twice in a row, along with her wife on the screen.
Snapping back to reality, Xu Nuo grabbed a tissue and wiped her nose. “One sneeze means someone’s thinking of you, two means someone’s cursing you, three means you’re catching a cold.” Suddenly, as if remembering something, she gritted her teeth and said, “It must be that troublemaker Liu Ying! She’s definitely in her room secretly cursing us!”
Under normal circumstances, Xu Nuo would have already stormed over to bicker with Liu Ying, but tonight, she held back.
Gazing at her wife’s melancholic yet beautiful face on the screen, Xu Nuo couldn’t help but grin foolishly as she held her phone, then asked with concern, “Is what you said earlier true?”
“In your family, going back several generations, weren’t the pairings either AB or forced AO combinations?”
“Was it really only the very first ancestor who had an AA pairing?”
Seeing her wife nod, Xu Nuo felt her heart sink, and a faint sense of despair washed over her. “Honey, we might have to prepare a betrothal gift for Liu Ying’s family.”
Tonight, Xu Nuo was destined to lose sleep over the possibility that her “sworn enemy might become in-laws.”
Across the hall, Liu Ying was also kept awake all night.
For the safety of the little ones, the program crew had provided two separate cribs, one for Jiang Man and one for Wen Qing, which should have been just right.
Every time Liu Ying saw the two little ones obediently close their eyes, turned off the light, and was about to lie down, she would hear a rustling sound.
After this happened several times, Liu Ying initially suspected that some small animal had entered the room. For safety reasons, she released her spiritual entity to search the area around the room.
But she found nothing.
Just as she was puzzled, turned off the light again, and was about to lie down to release her spiritual entity for another check, a casual glance from her spiritual entity finally revealed the truth.
There was only one truth!
The room’s light was switched on. Liu Ying held the little one under her arms, her face stern and looking quite fierce.
“Qingzai, what are you doing?”
Wen Qing, stuck between two small beds, was caught red-handed by Liu Ying.
The suspect toddler’s dream shattered. Having joined this room less than two hours ago, she was now being carried by the room’s authority figure and angrily returned.
Even though the suspect toddler shed tears with an expressionless face, this tactic no longer worked on the two women.
A young child’s temperament and mood can change as quickly as the weather in February. To prevent Jiang Man and the other from fighting while playing, Liu Ying had deliberately placed the two cribs a short distance apart.
Though not far only the length of her arm she never expected Wen Qing to be so bold as to attempt climbing over!
Looking at her returned daughter silently weeping, Xu Nuo felt inferior to Liu Ying. After enduring a scolding, she carried the child back to their room.
On the bedside, the video call with her wife was still connected.
The moment her wife saw her carrying Qing back, the few pixels of a smile at the corners of her lips quickly drooped.
Alphas, whether toddlers or adults, have a natural mutual repulsion toward their own kind.
In mild cases, like Jiang Man and Jiang Feng, the mother and daughter might roughhouse but still share warmth; in severe cases, like Wen Qing and Wen Yu, the mother and daughter despise and resent each other.
This is especially true when one mother is a beta and unable to provide pheromone comfort.
The pheromones released by Wen Yu, an alpha, did not comfort Wen Qing but instead conveyed various negative emotions like anxiety, tension, and gloom.
Having grown up receiving such emotions from her mother, it’s no wonder their relationship is strained.
Sometimes, when Liu Ying scolds Xu Nuo for being blinded by feminine charm and calls her a naive simpleton, she isn’t wrong.
Holding her daughter, Xu Nuo smiled radiantly, grasped her daughter’s little hand, and greeted her wife through the screen.
As night deepened, after chatting with her wife for a while while holding their daughter, Xu Nuo ended the call.
Wen Qing had already been changed into her pajamas by Liu Ying. Looking at her expressionless daughter, Xu Nuo sighed helplessly, placed her in the crib by the bed, and turned off the light.
Jiang Man had always been a child who fell asleep the moment she touched the bed at bedtime.
She was completely unaware of Wen Qing’s attempt to climb over and even woke up the next morning puzzled by the empty bed beside her.
Liu Ying didn’t notice her confusion.
Stumbling through dressing Jiang Man in her crawl suit and putting on her little hat, she carried her out.
Downstairs, the producer, who also served as the host, had been waiting for them for a long time, clutching something in her hand.
After all the adult and child guests had gathered, the producer went through the usual procedures, read a long list of sponsors, and then mysteriously approached Jiang Man with the item in hand.
“Do you know what this is?” the producer said, holding her clenched hand in front of the toddler and putting on a playful voice. “Does Qingzai want to guess?”
Looking at the beaming producer and then at the confused faces around her, Jiang Man shook her head with a soft “pfft.”
The producer was utterly charmed by her!
No longer keeping up the mystery, she revealed what was hidden in her palm.
A small dog badge, similar to Teacher Xiao Bo’s but not quite the same, was pinned to Jiang Man’s bib.
Seeing the similar little dog, Teacher Xiao Bo’s child Mu Qian and the little golden retriever Fang Jin crawled toward Jiang Man, babbling excitedly. The three toddlers giggled and tugged at each other’s bibs, examining them closely.
Xu Nuo had also come down and, under her child’s direction, quietly placed Wen Qing beside Jiang Man.
Kissing this one, then snuggling with that one, Jiang Man only snapped out of it when someone tugged at the corner of her clothes. She looked innocently at Wen Qing, who was sulking.
Jiang Man blinked, stepped forward, and planted a kiss on Wen Qing’s forehead.
Then, with unshakable confidence, she continued to snuggle with the other two little ones.
Jiang Man wasn’t wrong, she had merely committed a mistake that every little one under the sun would make!
