- Chapter 8 - The Pursuit of Manman
Crooked, messy characters danced before Jiang Man’s eyes.
Though she could understand the words when she heard them, and their meanings mostly remained the same, trying to decipher the cards made her head spin.
Oh my, this is way too hard for a little one like me!
No one told her that human evolution had also transformed the way words were written!
Watching the teacher hold up cards with characters made of swirling lines, Jiang Man grabbed her own feet and tilted her head back.
Thump!
Contestant Jiang Man was the first to fall.
It was all just for show. Seeing her lie down, the early education teacher didn’t push her. Instead, she smiled and sat opposite the little one, quietly waiting for her to roll over and get up on her own.
Like a little turtle on its back, Jiang Man twisted her head left and right.
To her left, Mu Qian and Fang Jin, two other toddlers, had already started chewing on the word cards.
Noticing Jiang Man’s gaze, Fang Jin, the enthusiastic little fluffball, pulled the card out of her mouth and offered to share it with Jiang Man.
Jiang Man declined.
Twisting to the right, she saw the pretty little girl, Wen Qing, sitting in a daze, showing little reaction to the teacher’s words, almost as if she couldn’t be bothered.
But the moment Wen Qing noticed Jiang Man looking at her, a soft, adorable smile instantly lit up her face.
Such a tiny toddler, and already so two-faced!
Looking around, it seemed like Jiang Man, relying on her past knowledge, was still the one making the fastest progress.
Pumping herself up, Jiang Man let out a determined “Heave-ho!” and pushed herself up with her short, chubby legs.
Her sparkling, dewy eyes seemed to shower the teacher with little stars.
“Mmph-pa-ya mmph, pa-ya-ya ba!” Bring it on, this little learning challenge!
A fierce fighting spirit blazed in the toddler’s honey-sweet eyes.
The studious overachiever’s attitude inevitably affected the other three innocent toddlers.
Especially the early education teacher assigned to Wen Qing, who had been largely ignored by the little one for quite some time.
Seeing the pretty toddler stare intently at the cute little one next to her before suddenly turning back to pay attention and ask for the cards, the teacher was so moved she nearly burst into tears!
Under Jiang Man’s enthusiastic leadership, the learning session proceeded with fiery intensity.
But after all, a real toddler’s attention span is short. Once it wore off, they went back to chewing on the word cards.
The fake toddler, however, was brimming with confidence about the upcoming test!
“Congratulations, Qingzai, for taking first place in this pop quiz!”
As the teachers held up the scorecards, the producer smiled and placed the holographic projector containing resources for Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf into Wen Qing’s tiny hands.
Having missed out on the resource featuring her beloved white moonlight by just one point, Jiang Man couldn’t help but gnaw on the corner of her drool bib.
Darn it!
Even with her secret cheating, how did she still not beat Wen Qing?
Could it be that Wen Qing is the real prodigy here?
Her curious gaze held no trace of jealousy, only admiration and envy, as she looked at Wen Qing.
Clutching her prize, the pretty toddler ignored the producer’s teasing and turned to crawl toward the little one she liked.
“Pa-ya.”
A small round disc was pressed into her chubby little hand. Jiang Man wasn’t a real toddler, so she hadn’t forgotten what had just happened.
But this was clearly Qingzai’s prize, why was she giving it to Jiang Man?
Puzzled, Jiang Man let out a questioning “Pa-ya?” Wen Qing, hearing this, responded with a soft sound and pushed the disc further into Jiang Man’s arms.
Jiang Man tilted her head. “Pa-ya?”
“QQingzai wants to give this to you.”
After the producer finished cueing the process, it was time for the midday break again. The mothers all came over to pick up their little ones.
As the toddlers on the floor were being lifted into their mothers’ arms, Jiang Man heard Wen Qing’s mother explain to her, “Qing’er really likes Manzai! This is a gift she specially picked out for her big sister, Manzai!”
Oh, really?
Sitting in her mother’s arms, Jiang Man looked at the smiling toddler across from her.
After a moment of thought, the chubby little toddler began fiddling with the metal badge on her bib.
The back of the badge had a pin design, and seeing her actions, Liu Ying was startled. She stopped Manzai’s movements and patiently asked, “Does Manzai want to give the puppy badge to Wen Qing, her little sister?”
The light golden-haired toddler in her arms seemed to understand her words and nodded very seriously.
Although Jiang Man really liked this badge and had only received it that morning, Wen Qing had already given her the prize she’d won, so she felt she should return the gesture!
The shiny golden puppy badge was pinned onto the bib of the green-eyed toddler, right next to the little snake badge.
This was the first time since the show started that the toddlers had engaged in “badge diplomacy.”
Held by her mother, Jiang Man watched as the pretty toddler, carried by Aunt Xu Nuo, happily tugged at her bib, turning it over and over to admire it.
She seemed to really like the badge.
Jiang Man stared at the two badges pressed closely together, her curiosity piqued.
Although all the toddlers’ bib badges featured small animals, hers, Mu Qian’s, and Fang Jin’s were different types of puppies.
Mu Qian’s was a little Bernese Mountain Dog, and Fang Jin’s was a Golden Retriever.
At first glance, hers looked like a Bernese Mountain Dog, but upon closer inspection, there were subtle differences.
Xu Nuo was curious too.
Looking at the puppy badge on her daughter’s bib, she raised her chin toward Liu Ying and asked, “What kind of puppy is Manzai’s? It looks like Qian’er’s, but not quite the same.”
Jiang Man heard her mother say, “Although it looks like a Bernese Mountain Dog, Xiao Man’s is actually a St. Bernard.”
A St. Bernard? What kind of puppy was that?
Manzai, with her limited extracurricular knowledge, scratched her head curiously.
The visiting guest’s stay was only two days and one night. Though it was called two days, they could actually leave by the afternoon of the second day.
Liu Ying had originally wanted Jiang Man to play a little longer with the other children, but the big dog at home had been sending text messages nonstop since the midday livestream ended averaging one per minute and the tone was full of grievance.
Seeing that if they didn’t return soon, Jiang Feng would probably bombard her phone with messages, Liu Ying had no choice. After lunch, she took Manzai to record a follow-up interview and then left.
When they left, whether by coincidence or on purpose, Xu Nuo and Wen Qing happened to be in their follow-up interview.
By the time the mother-daughter pair emerged, Liu Ying had already been gone with Jiang Man for a while.
Hearing that Manzai had left, Xu Nuo instinctively looked down at Wen Qing in her arms.
As a mother, she knew best how much her daughter adored Manzai, her big sister.
Now that Liu Ying had taken Manzai away without even saying goodbye, Xu Nuo was afraid Wen Qing would burst into tears without restraint.
Like her mother, Wen Qing was a stubborn child.
But the expected crying didn’t happen.
Xu Nuo watched as her daughter, with her chubby little hands, repeatedly stroked the badge Manzai had given her on her bib.
Her eyes, with their upturned corners, were lowered, and in a place her mother couldn’t see, her green pupils were fixed on the puppy badge, filled with deep affection.
Wen Qing really, really, super, incredibly liked Jiang Man.
The puppy badge was now encircled with a layer of damp drool.
Falling asleep as soon as she got in the car had become a conditioned reflex for Jiang Man. She had no idea when they arrived home or when her mother placed her in the crib in the nursery she was completely lost in deep sleep.
Before she even opened her eyes, a scent of peach mixed with pinewood wafted toward her.
Yawning, Jiang Man rolled over and sat up.
The room was quiet. Apart from the small nightlight by the bed, she was the only little one in the entire room.
Jiang Man wasn’t truly a baby, and although she didn’t know exactly what this scent was, she had figured it out over time:
Whenever she smelled this blend of pinewood and peach, she wouldn’t see either of her mothers again until the next afternoon.
Moreover, the next day, she would even get a gentle, soft-spoken mother who wouldn’t oppose her whims.
Bored, the little one grabbed a teether and stuffed it into her mouth, chewing idly.
Although she had only spent a day with Wen Qing and the others, Jiang Man had already grown accustomed to playing stacking games with the puppy clan’s little ones and taking breaks to coax her jealous, pretty little sister.
Being the only child in the room felt empty and lonely, and for a moment, Jiang Man wasn’t quite used to it.
After a while, the nanny auntie came in with a bottle of milk at just the right temperature. Seeing Jiang Man sitting there chewing on her teether all by herself, the nanny was already used to it.
She might not dare to boast about much else, but the nanny responsible for Jiang Man could confidently swear that sweet, adorable Man Man was the most well-behaved, sweetest, and most obedient little charge she had ever encountered in her career!
Who could resist a chubby, sweet little bean of a baby?
No one.
Absolutely no one!!
Even other little ones couldn’t resist her!
Early in the morning, Jiang Feng was cuddling with her wife, whom she hadn’t seen for a whole day and night, and hadn’t even had a chance to kiss her yet when a servant’s knock interrupted them.
“Chairwoman Jiang, there’s a guest here to see you.”
Liu Ying was still asleep. Jiang Feng glanced at the time, it was only a little past seven in the morning. Who would visit at this hour?
Grumbling under her breath, Jiang Feng reluctantly got up, changed her clothes, and freshened up.
When she went downstairs to the living room, she finally saw who the visitor was.
Waving for the servants to prepare breakfast, Jiang Feng walked over and sat down on the sofa opposite the guest. “President Wen, why have you brought your daughter to my house so early in the morning?”
Wen Yu held her daughter, her face devoid of any smile, her expression indifferent, as if she were talking about something unrelated to herself. “Anuo said Wen Qing wanted to see Man Man. She cried all last night after realizing it too late, so she asked me to bring her over to find Man Man.”
Jiang Feng was also a witness to the AB relationship between Wen Yu and Xu Nuo.
Watching the mother and daughter, one sitting at the far left end of the long sofa, the other at the far right, with enough space between them to fit Man Man and her entire family of three Jiang Feng raised an eyebrow in surprise.
Although she knew that alpha mothers and alpha offspring might not be very close due to their innate territorial instincts, she had never seen a pair as distant as Wen Yu and Wen Qing.
But since it was their own mother-daughter matter, Jiang Feng didn’t want to say too much. When the servants brought breakfast, she invited them to eat.
Wen Yu declined.
Her purpose in coming was simply to drop off Wen Qing and then leave.
Now that Wen Yu had been delivered, and the wife’s request to see either Jiang Feng or Liu Ying had been fulfilled, Wen Yu’s task was complete. Without a moment’s delay, she stood up and left.
She moved so swiftly that Jiang Feng didn’t even have time to utter a word to stop her.
In the living room, Jiang Feng and the little one were left staring at each other in bewilderment.
