- Chapter 5 - Chaos in Shipping Couples
The two rivals arrived late, each holding the other’s toddler.
As soon as they took their seats, Liu Ying stood up first to apologize and took the initiative to shoulder the responsibility of caring for the toddlers.
“How can we trouble you like this?”
All four toddlers were brought to Liu Ying’s side, leaving the two other mothers Qian Duowei, a university teacher and mother of Little Golden Retriever, and Li Chengxi, a talented actress and mother of Little Professor.
“It’s no trouble at all. I’m not very hungry either. I’ll take care of them. You all enjoy your meal!”
The four toddlers sat in a row in their high chairs. When they saw Liu Ying approaching with small bowls, all except Wen Qing instinctively opened their mouths wide.
From a distance, they looked like three chirping baby birds, eagerly waiting to be fed by their mother.
Although the toddlers were well-behaved, Li Chengxi and Qian Duowei still felt guilty about leaving Liu Ying alone to care for them.
But just as they were about to eat faster, Xu Nuo stopped them.
“No rush, take your time.”
She gracefully handed each of them a perfectly grilled pineapple slice and said, “Since someone is taking care of them, there’s no need to hurry. After all, she was late this morning and made us wait half an hour hungry tonight.”
“She deserves it.”
Xu Nuo spoke with such conviction that she managed to keep the two from standing up.
Her teasing remarks were not at all restrained. Liu Ying tried to hold back but eventually couldn’t resist turning around to glare fiercely at her.
It almost felt like the dynamic of two rivals who, while not in love, were certainly at odds.
Jiang Man, finally tasting the plain, salt-free steamed egg after opening her mouth wide, smacked her lips contentedly.
Watching the two women exchanging fierce glances, Jiang Man suddenly felt that her mom and Wen Qing’s mom seemed, a little compatible?
Realizing she had entertained a thought that felt disloyal to her mother, a guilty Jiang Man quickly shook her head, trying to rid her mind of such “dirty” thoughts.
But she shook her head a bit too vigorously and felt dizzy. Just as her little head was about to hit the tray table, a hand appeared mid-air and cushioned her forehead.
Hmm, it smelled milky and felt soft and pudgy.
Once the dizziness subsided, Jiang Man looked up and gave Wen Qing a soft, sweet smile.
Yes, earlier in the room, when Aunt Xu Nuo introduced the toddlers to her mom, Jiang Man finally learned the names of the three resident little ones!
The little snake toddler Wen Qing, the little professor Mu Qian, and the little golden retriever toddler Fang Jin.
It was said that the badges pinned to their bibs represented the forms their future spiritual bodies would take.
But what exactly was a spiritual body?
The little mixed-breed Jiang Man was puzzled.
Looking at the badges on the three toddlers, she tugged at her own empty bib.
But Aunt Xu Nuo had said that toddlers usually wouldn’t see the form of their spiritual bodies until around the age of one, and they wouldn’t undergo differentiation until about sixteen.
Jiang Man understood it as: initial evolution at one year old, and full evolution at sixteen.
It sounded a bit like Pokémon!
So cool!
There weren’t many foods the toddlers could eat, a bit of boiled vegetables with a sprinkle of salt, half an egg, and a small bowl of steamed egg custard were enough to make them eat with blissful, swaying delight.
Only after feeding the toddlers did Liu Ying free up her hands to eat.
But when she turned around and saw the messy plates, she instinctively frowned.
The expression flashed by so quickly that no one noticed except Xu Nuo.
“Tch, so finicky.”
A neatly arranged porcelain plate was shoved in front of Liu Ying by Xu Nuo, who had picked it up from the small table behind her. “Stop being so damn fussy and just eat,” she snapped.
Her tone was sharp, but the dishes on the plate were all Liu Ying’s favorites.
Liu Ying stared at the food for a moment, then picked up her chopsticks and began eating, all while deliberately provoking Xu Nuo. “Xu Nuo, did that Wen What’s-His-Name dump you? Are you trying to cozy up to me as your backup plan?”
“Let me make this clear, I’d be willing to support you, but I won’t raise you and Wen What’s-His-Name’s daughter, got it?”
Those words shifted Xu Nuo’s irritation from feigned to genuine. She snatched the plate back, grabbed Liu Ying by the collar, and pretended to force-feed her. “That mouth of yours never says anything decent!” Xu Nuo gritted her teeth. “I should’ve laced this with poison and put you out of your misery!”
Jiang Man, in her past life, had no entertainment to speak of. The only thing she knew about Pokémon was what she’d overheard from her deskmate. Reading novels, watching movies or TV shows, fangirling over celebrities, shipping couples none of that had ever been part of her world.
But now!
Jiang Man pushed aside Wen Qing’s little hand, her eyes fixed intently on her mother and Auntie Xu Nuo, an inexplicable excitement bubbling inside her. Reason told her this was wrong that she was betraying her mother. Yet another voice in her head whispered: This is top-tier content! Feigned indifference masking genuine care, seeming rivals but actually soulmates in sync!
The cameraman assigned to film Jiang Man zoomed in, capturing her flushed, excited face as it filled the screen. A passing producer noticed and followed Jiang Man’s gaze to see what had her so captivated.
After a moment, the producer couldn’t hold back a laugh. “Little Man is already shipping couples at such a young age? And she’s shipping her mom and Xu Nuo? Tsk, tsk, someone’s going to be crying in their nest again.”
Hearing this, the cameraman instinctively asked, “Producer, who’s going to cry?”
The producer glanced at the bickering “archenemies” at the dining table and couldn’t suppress a mischievous grin. She tapped a few nearby camerapeople, instructing them to capture multiple angles of Liu Ying, Xu Nuo, and Jiang Man.
“Who?” The producer’s smile widened. “The one at home, belonging to both of them in that frame.”
“From what I know, both of them are champion-level jealous types.”
After a moment’s thought, she added, “Let’s take a few days off after this episode wraps.”
Noticing the confused looks from the crew, the producer just hummed a tune and walked away without explaining.
On screen, the little one’s attention had already been tugged away by another child. Wen Qing grabbed Jiang Man’s hand, babbling and cooing to draw her focus back. Jiang Man tilted her head, puzzled, as she looked at this grumpy yet intensely focused little girl.
This slightly domineering sister, as Auntie Xu Nuo had said, was exactly one month and one day younger than her. It was highly likely she’d mature into a female alpha, just like Jiang Man. Though Jiang Man didn’t fully grasp how genders were categorized or what it meant in this world, judging by her mother’s and Auntie Xu Nuo’s expressions at the time, she guessed that two people with the same “sign” might be like the same poles of a magnet unlikely to be attracted to each other.
They might not repel each other entirely, but they probably wouldn’t adore or cling to one another the way Wen Qing did with her.
Jiang Man’s round, bright eyes focused intently on the beautiful child before her emerald-green eyes and hair, fair skin, slightly upturned eye corners, and long, curled lashes.
Jiang Man felt that no matter what type of Symbolic person her little sister would differentiate into after turning sixteen, she would undoubtedly become the goddess of many.
She was just too beautiful!
But it was a different kind of beauty from Jiang Man’s.
Perhaps due to the strong alpha genes and the relatively weaker beta genes from her mother, Wen Qing and Xu Nuo didn’t resemble each other much in facial features. Only from certain angles could traces of Xu Nuo be discerned.
Xu Nuo’s features were soft and gentle, but Wen Qing’s were sharp and striking. Coupled with her unsmiling, stern expression and reluctance to interact with peers, she always appeared cold and aloof.
If Jiang Man was a warm, radiant sun, Wen Qing was more like an icicle hanging from a snowy cliff.
Yet, her stunning beauty was both Wen Qing’s greatest asset and the most effective tool to captivate Jiang Man.
Pulling Jiang Man’s attention toward her, Wen Qing grabbed her short, chubby hand, squeezing and releasing it repeatedly.
Gazing at her little sister’s exquisite face, Jiang Man indulged her, offering her hand to be played with like a toy.
If she was this beautiful as a child, how breathtakingly gorgeous would she be when she grew up?
Jiang Man adored Wen Qing’s face beyond measure, especially since Wen Qing would occasionally reward her with a soft, sweet smile!
Dinner ended amidst bickering, and under the producer’s direction, the parents and children engaged in some lighthearted bonding activities before wrapping up the day’s filming.
But when they reached their room, Xu Nuo faced a dilemma.
Wen Qing, who was usually calm and well-behaved, seemed unusually unsettled that night. The moment Xu Nuo tried to carry her back to their room, she began shedding tears.
She cried silently, with only large teardrops rolling down her cheeks.
Her watery eyes fixed on Xu Nuo, wordless, her fair little face flushed red with emotion.
Yet, as soon as they stepped out into the hallway, she would stop crying and raise her hand, pointing toward Liu Ying and Jiang Man’s room.
Since the child couldn’t speak yet, Xu Nuo initially struggled to understand her intentions.
After several attempts going in and out, Xu Nuo finally grasped what Wen Qing wanted.
Following her daughter’s pointing finger, Xu Nuo cautiously confirmed, “Do you want to sleep with Manzai?”
Wen Qing nodded earnestly, her gaze fixed on her mother.
Xu Nuo was baffled. Why had Wen Qing grown so attached to Manzai after just one meeting?
If Manzai were an omega or a beta, it might make sense, but Manzai was also an alpha child.
Typically, high-quality alphas exhibited signs of mutual aversion even during childhood.
But her own daughter.
After a prolonged standoff between mother and daughter, Xu Nuo, utterly perplexed, knocked on Liu Ying’s door.
When the door opened, Liu Ying remembered to hold Jiang Man this time.
“Mmm-ah?” What’s wrong with little sister?
As soon as the door opened, Jiang Man saw the pretty little sister’s flushed face and teary eyes, the tear tracks still visible clearly, she had been crying.
Liu Ying was also taken aback, forgetting even to bicker, and asked with concern, “What happened to Qingzai? Why is her face covered in tears? Was she crying?”
Restraining her daughter from lunging toward Manzai, Xu Nuo nodded with a complicated expression and relayed the entire situation as her daughter’s spokesperson.
Watching the two children hugging on the bed, Liu Ying wondered, “Why is Qingzai so attached to Xiao Man?”
Observing them, Xu Nuo’s expression turned grave. “I don’t know.”
After a long moment, Liu Ying turned her head to look at her: “Xu Nuo, does your family have a genetic predisposition for AA relationships in addition to AB relationships?”
Smack!
The slap landed squarely on Liu Ying’s back without holding back any force.
Liu Ying snapped back to reality, her eyes blazing with anger.
On the bed, Jiang Man, who had finally managed to free herself from the clingy embrace of the pretty girl, watched the interaction between her mother and Aunt Xu Nuo with sparkling eyes.
So, satisfying!!!
Teacher, this is absolutely divine!
