- Chapter 4 - The Super Alpha Man
Adults’ conversations always shift topics quickly.
Before Jiang Man could hear the answer she wanted, the discussion had already moved on from the century-long rivalry between Liu Ying and Xu Nuo to parenting tips for young children.
Each mother held her own child and sat on the small sofas, with the producer doubling as the host seated in the center.
After a long list of acknowledgments to sponsors, the topic finally began.
“Why choose natural childbirth?”
Prompted by the producer, Liu Ying instinctively pinched Jiang Man’s chubby cheeks while carefully choosing her words: “After the great fog of 2034, humanity evolved from a monotonous two-gender system into six genders.”
“Technology has advanced rapidly, and although incubation pods are now highly developed, I still wanted to experience the feeling of carrying Man Man myself.”
“It’s a different kind of experience compared to using an incubation pod. My daughter and I are one entity.”
After sharing her thoughts, Liu Ying looked seriously into the camera and added, “Although advancements in medical technology have minimized the risks of childbirth, we must acknowledge that the physical toll of childbirth is still something medical technology cannot fully compensate for.”
“If you haven’t fully thought it through, I’d like to remind everyone from my own experience that incubation pods remain the optimal choice.”
Her mother’s voice grew increasingly distant to Jiang Man, as if the little one had fallen into a vacuum, her hearing blocked.
What?
Her cheeks flushed red from her mother’s pinching, Jiang Man was still in a daze.
She absentmindedly chewed on her hand towel, her little brain working at full capacity.
What did she mean by incubation pods? Evolution? Six genders?
Could it be the three mathematical symbols they mentioned earlier, combined with male and female?
Jiang Man’s head buzzed, nearly short-circuiting.
Her tiny hands were soaked with drool. Having spent her previous life either studying or earning money, with no time for entertainment, Jiang Man fell deep into thought.
If humanity now had six genders, excluding the male options, that left three genders.
So the question was, among female alpha, female beta, and female omega, which one would she be?
And what did these three symbols even mean?
Before she could strike a thoughtful pose, Liu Ying pretended to scold her and pulled the soaked hand towel out of her mouth.
The damp hand towel was untied, revealing her short, chubby hands.
Freed, her little arm waved triumphantly:
Mother Earth, it seems you’ve sent me to the wrong place!
This isn’t the familiar Earth I know!
Her mischievous arm was promptly captured by Liu Ying’s fair hand and “forcefully” subdued.
The squinty-eyed producer smiled warmly, looking at her little topic-generator with a gentleness the crew had never seen before. “Does our Man Man want to join the conversation too?”
Jiang Man blinked her watery almond eyes, sparkling with innocence, and let out a confused sound as if she didn’t understand.
No one could resist the starry-eyed gaze of a child.
Not even the cold, calculating producer who only cared about ratings and topics!
The afternoon recording was nearing its end. After a brief Q&A session, the children were gathered for a group photo, and the live stream was shut down.
Though the live stream ended, the filming continued.
As guest participants, Jiang Man and her mother would only wrap up their filming the following evening.
This meant they would be spending the night in the accommodation provided by the production team.
For Liu Ying, this was the first time she would be taking care of Manzai alone overnight!
Even though Jiang Man was usually as well-behaved as a little angel, for Liu Ying, this was undoubtedly a daunting challenge.
The very first step changing Manzai’s diaper had already stumped her.
Normally, Liu Ying and Jiang Feng took care of the baby together, but most of the tasks related to Manzai’s care were handled by Jiang Feng. Liu Ying occasionally helped by passing a diaper or a bottle, but most of the time, she was only responsible for holding Manzai and playing with her.
Placed on a clean, white towel, Liu Ying stared thoughtfully at the snug-fitting onesie on Manzai.
Next door, Xu Nuo, who had already evolved into a gold-medal mom through the show’s challenges, deftly changed her poker-faced 2.0 version of a toddler into fresh pants and clothes. She then carried her little one downstairs to wait for dinner.
Ten minutes passed.
Twenty minutes passed.
Although the villa was equipped with a climate control system, the prepared meal was gradually losing its warmth. To make matters worse, her own child, seated in the high chair, kept fidgeting and frequently turned to look toward the staircase.
Her demeanor was exactly the same as her alpha mother’s when she was pursuing Xu Nuo back in the day.
Xu Nuo clicked her tongue lightly and turned her child’s head back. “Wen Qing, you are not allowed to fall for that girl from Liu Ying’s family, understand? Even though she’s pretty, has an interesting personality, and is incredibly likable, her mom and I are sworn enemies. Do you get that? Sworn enemies!”
The little snake child, Wen Qing, turned her head to look at her mother. Her face was stern and icy. After a moment of eye contact with her mother, she raised her paw, swatted away the hand gripping her chubby cheek, and turned her head back toward the staircase.
At that moment, Xu Nuo finally understood how her wife’s mothers must have felt when they saw their daughter, an S- grade alpha, cold-faced and stubborn as a mule insisting on being with an ordinary beta like her.
Mother and daughter were now locked in a battle of wills.
One kept turning the child’s head, while the other stubbornly turned it back. Neither was willing to back down.
Behind the monitors, the producer’s eyes lit up. Grabbing the walkie-talkie, she instructed the filming crew, “Quick, quick! Focus the camera on Xu Nuo and Qingzai! Capture Qingzai’s first emotional leak!”
This was pure gold for generating buzz and discussions!
After struggling with her daughter for what felt like an eternity, Xu Nuo deeply empathized with the heartache her wife’s mothers must have felt back then.
But after all, this was her own daughter.
After a prolonged stare-down between mother and child, and with half an hour nearly gone without any sign of Liu Ying that lovesick fool Xu Nuo thought for a moment, picked up her stubborn mule of a daughter, and deliberately announced loudly, “Oh, fine! Since you like Manzai so much, I’ll take you to see her. But just for a moment, okay?”
With that, Xu Nuo nodded to the other two guests and gracefully carried Wen Qing upstairs, knocking on Liu Ying’s door.
Inside the room, Liu Ying was sweating profusely as she struggled to figure out how to remove the onesie. Hearing the knock, she called out in response, temporarily placed Jiang Man on the bed, and hurried over to open the door.
“Sorry, sorry! I was just changing Manzai’s clothes and—”
As the door swung open, she looked up and saw the face of her archrival. Liu Ying immediately swallowed her apology, lifted her chin, and said with a haughty expression, “What are you doing here?”
In Xu Nuo’s arms, Wen Qing was already craning her neck, peering over her mother’s shoulder to look inside.
Xu Nuo didn’t even have time to feel embarrassed by her daughter’s behavior before she spotted Jiang Man through the gap left alone on the bed.
Though the baby was still some distance from the edge, if she rolled over and crawled forward just a bit, she would surely fall. The production crew wasn’t thoughtful enough to lay a carpet by the bedside!
Xu Nuo’s eyes narrowed, her expression darkened. She shoved Wen Qing into Liu Ying’s arms and hurried over to pick up Jiang Man, who had been amusing herself.
Xu Nuo held Manzai, while Liu Ying cradled Wen Qing. The two babies had swapped caretakers, yet the scene looked surprisingly harmonious.
Wen Qing, nestled in Liu Ying’s arms, seemed much more well-behaved, even showing some expression on her face!
But,
Xu Nuo frowned, staring at her own child. That stiff, soft smile, why did it look so much like the fawning expression her wife put on when trying to please her mother?
Xu Nuo shook her head after a long, hard look. Qingzai wasn’t even a year old yet, how could she possibly wear that kind of “trying to impress the mother-in-law” expression? She must have imagined it. Definitely imagined it!
Snapping back to reality, Xu Nuo held the puzzled Manzai tightly, her brow furrowed as she shot Liu Ying a glare. “You foolish love-struck idiot! Is Jiang Feng the only thing on your mind? How could you just leave Manzai alone on the bed like that? What if she rolled over and fell?”
Liu Ying couldn’t get a word in as Xu Nuo berated her, but hearing the warning, she belatedly felt a chill of fear.
After scolding her rival, Xu Nuo looked down at the baby in her arms her rival’s child and couldn’t help but break into a smile, her voice softening instantly. “Who’s this little cutie? It’s Manzai!”
Feeling the bulge in Manzai’s diaper, Xu Nuo’s eyes curved into crescents as she gently laid the baby down.
Having been shaped by the show’s challenges, Xu Nuo was nothing like Liu Ying, who was practically a hands-off parent. Before Jiang Man could even start to feel shy, Xu Nuo had already stripped off her floral onesie, changed her diaper, and slipped her into a fresh set of clothes. The whole process was smooth and effortless, leaving Liu Ying in awe.
For a moment, Liu Ying forgot that she and Xu Nuo had long since cut ties and couldn’t help but praise, “Xiao Nuo, you’re amazing! You’re so quick!”
Xu Nuo proudly placed her hands on her hips, about to bask in the compliment, when Wen Qing patted Liu Ying, snapping her back to reality. Liu Ying quickly backtracked, “Hmph, so efficient did Wen Yu lose interest in you? Are you being mistreated?”
Xu Nuo bared her teeth reflexively. “It’s your Jiang Feng who lost interest! You’re the one being mistreated!”
Just as the two influential women in the entertainment industry were about to start bickering again, Wen Qing, held by Liu Ying, let out a sound and lunged toward Jiang Man on her own.
Startled, Liu Ying quickly placed Wen Qing next to Jiang Man, who had sat up.
The moment she was set down, Wen Qing clung to Jiang Man like a magnet.
Watching how unusually attached Wen Qing was, Liu Ying stroked her chin and, driven by curiosity, temporarily set aside her past grievances with Xu Nuo. “Is your kid always this clingy? Does she take after you or that Wen, whatever his name is?”
“Wen Qing takes after Wen Yu,” Xu Nuo retorted, rolling her eyes. Then, mimicking Liu Ying, she rested her chin on her hand and observed her own child.
After a long pause, she turned to ask, “Is Manzai leaning toward being an omega?”
“Super high-quality, conservatively estimated S-class alpha, thank you very much,” Liu Ying replied. “What about your Wen Qing? An omega?”
“Alpha, thank you.”
The two mothers exchanged glances, fell silent, and turned their attention to the playful babies.
Two alpha cubs, not repelling each other, and still so clingy.
Jiang Man, who had been eavesdropping all along, noticed the two mothers’ gazes and lifted her little face, flashing them a brilliant smile.
Though she didn’t quite understand what gender an alpha was supposed to be.
But an S-class alpha sounded super cool!
