- Chapter 31.1 - Fading Childhood
The long-dreaded class reassignment finally concluded with the kindergarten director’s gentle announcement.
Jiang Man was overjoyed she, Wen Qing, Fang Jin, and Mu Qian had all luckily remained in the Sunflower Class.
Rumors said this reassignment would mark the end of the terrifying tradition of random class shuffling for the little ones!
But while Man and her friends celebrated, other children transferred out of Sunflower Class burst into loud, heartbroken sobs.
When pain outweighs fear, even the smallest bodies summon boundless courage.
Fang Jin and the other two found themselves helpless against the swarm of crying children, pushed further and further away from Man’s side.
“?”
Fang Jin and Mu Qian exchanged bewildered looks, taking in their new surroundings before turning back to watch Jiang Man, who was now at the center of the sobbing crowd, hopping around trying to comfort the distressed little ones.
Hands pressed together, Fang Jin and Mu Qian silently prayed for Man.
Poor Man, besieged by a horde of weeping toddlers.
The preferences of young children are stark: they draw near what they like and avoid what they don’t.
But Sunflower Class had developed a curious phenomenon.
Teacher Li observed a group of children repeatedly approaching Man, only to halt a short distance away, then scurry back in a fluster.
It was as if they were drawn to Man, yet some invisible, fearsome beast at her side kept them at bay.
Puzzled by the odd behavior, Teacher Li couldn’t resist pulling aside one child to ask.
“Because Wen Qing gets fierce with us,” the little one explained, clutching a ball and pouting. “She’s a meanie, but only to us. Around Man, she acts all sweet and tricks her.”
Seeing the child’s pout, Teacher Li asked curiously, “Have any of you told Man that Qing is fierce to you?”
The children nodded, clamoring to share their grievances.
“Man gives us snacks to apologize for Wen Qing.”
“But Wen Qing always ends up taking them back!”
“She swaps them with other snacks Man gave us.”
“Man tells us her little sister has been feeling down lately.”
“She says if we spend more time with Wen Qing, we’ll see she’s actually a really, really good kid.”
“Man thinks Wen Qing is delicate, she didn’t see how Wen Qing smashed the little sand ball until it burst last time!”
The group of children, feeling doubly wronged, clung to Teacher Li’s hands as if they’d found a confidante, each eager to voice their complaints.
By the time Teacher Li was nearly lost in the chorus of “Man this, Man that,” the children finally quieted down.
Their eyes sparkled with hope as they gazed up at her.
“Teacher Li, can you tell Man we’re telling the truth? We’re not lying, we’re good kids who don’t tell lies.”
“Teacher Li, can you ask Man to stop playing with Wen Qing and play with us instead?”
Under the weight of their pleading, wide-eyed stares, Teacher Li forced an awkward laugh.
“Of course, of course,” she stammered.
She hurried off, determined to observe more closely how Man and Wen Qing interacted.
Watching just the two of them, it was clear they shared an exceptionally close bond.
When Jiang Man came across something delicious, she would always save a portion for Wen Qing; whenever Wen Qing collected supplies or fetched water, she would also bring back a share for Jiang Man.
Occasionally, if Wen Qing was in a particularly good mood that day, she would also help out the other two good friends.
Rarely did Manzai and Wen Qing ever have disagreements.
Manzai seemed to always position herself as the older sister, skilled in the art of comforting and mediating whether it was soothing Wen Qing or resolving conflicts among the other children in the Sunflower Class.
Wen Qing, on the other hand, was much simpler. From beginning to end, the only one she cared about and paid attention to was Manzai. As for the other children, even if they started fighting right beside her, she remained indifferent. At most, she might find the noise bothersome, get up with her picture book, and move to another quiet spot to continue reading peacefully.
Teacher Li frowned as she observed Wen Qing, who detached herself coldly from the group of children whenever Jiang Man wasn’t around, and felt that her behavior was somewhat concerning.
“Teacher, you asked for me.”
After some deliberation, Teacher Li decided to call the child over for a private chat.
It was nap time, and the other children were all obediently sleeping on their little beds. In the sun-drenched, warm activity room, Teacher Li smiled and gestured for the lovely child to sit opposite her.
Teacher Li looked at the beautiful child with a gentle smile and said softly, “I remember Qingzai has known Manzai and the other two since they were very little, right? But I recall that Qingzai has known Jinzai and Qianzai for even longer. Why does Qingzai prefer Manzai so much more?”
The child’s jade-green eyes, cold and calm, met Teacher Li’s gaze. “Is there anyone who doesn’t like Manman?”
Well, that was a fair point.
Stumped, Teacher Li thought for a moment and rephrased her question: “Qingzai, don’t you ever get tired of being with Manzai every single day? Why not try playing with other children and making some new friends?”
The lovely child looked puzzled, as if asking: Why would I?
Teacher Li earnestly began to explain the benefits of making other good friends.
Wen Qing sat obediently across from her, listening and considering each of the advantages Teacher Li listed.
After Teacher Li finished speaking in one breath, the beautiful child looked at her calmly and said, “Everything you mentioned, Manman and I can do together.”
Teacher Li was momentarily speechless but then replied, “But doing the same thing with different friends can bring different kinds of joy!”
Hearing this, the child tilted her head with a confused expression.
Teacher Li couldn’t help but feel relieved, thinking she had finally gotten through to the child.
Just as she was about to smile and take the child back to rest, she heard the child ask plainly and seriously, “Teacher Li, why can’t Manman and I do different things together?”
“We’re still young, and there are so many things waiting for us in the future. We can accompany each other through all the experiences we haven’t had yet. Why would we ever find it boring or dull?”
Wen Qing spoke clearly and logically, leaving Teacher Li at a loss for words.
Indeed, with so many things to do in the world, why insist on dragging different people along to experience the same activities?
They failed to see other highlights, other scenery, trapping themselves in place with narrow-mindedness and feeble excuses.
After a long silence, Teacher Li came back to herself and softly apologized to the child.
Wen Qing tilted her pretty face up, shaking her head at Teacher Li. “It’s okay. Before I came, Manman told me that when the teacher asks to speak with me alone, it’s to understand me better and to help me.”
“But we’re different individuals. We have different thoughts, and our thinking and behavior are clearly distinct. What the teacher says isn’t necessarily all wrong, and what I think isn’t necessarily all right.”
Listening to the little one’s perfectly articulated and flawless reply, Teacher Li couldn’t help but click her tongue in amazement. “Did you come up with these words yourself, Qingzai?”
Wen Qing shook her head and turned to point toward the window.
A little golden head, glowing in the sunlight, hadn’t reacted in time and ended up locking eyes with Teacher Li.
Jiang Man flustered and hastily ducked down, squeezing into a huddle with Fang Jin and Mu Qian.
The three little ones, worried about their friend, had somehow managed to sneak out from under the watchful eyes of the teacher supervising nap time. It was unclear whether they had been there from the start or had just arrived.
With a sharp rustle, Teacher Li slid the window open, exposing the three little ones huddled in the corner, completely in plain sight.
Like herding little ducklings, they were ushered into the activity room.
Fang Jin pouted, leaning close to Jiang Man to whisper a complaint, “Hmph, it’s all Wen Qing’s fault.”
Jiang Man instinctively wanted to defend her younger sister, but she realized that Wen Qing’s sudden “betrayal” left her with no room to argue.
The four little ones stood obediently in front of Teacher Li, hands clasped behind their backs, heads bowed so low they almost touched the ground, intently watching their sock-clad feet fidget.
Looking at the three dejected little “puppies,” Teacher Li couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation!
She had thought she’d carefully chosen the perfect time for a one-on-one chat with a child, only to find that the pretty little one wasn’t alone.
Behind her stood three little partners in crime!
After standing in “punishment” for a while, Jiang Man couldn’t resist lifting her little face. She pattered over to Teacher Li, gently taking her finger and swinging it. “Teacher Li, we did something wrong.”
Who could resist the charms of such an adorable little one?
No! One! Could!
Looking down into Jiang Man’s round, glistening eyes, Teacher Li’s heart instantly melted into a puddle.
Her resolve wavering, she was just about to forgive the three little troublemakers for sneaking out of nap time when she glanced up and saw the other two little “puppies” clenching their hands, silently cheering Jiang Man on.
Noticing Teacher Li’s gaze, the two little cheerleaders quickly lowered their heads, looking everywhere but at her, pretending to be innocent little angels.
Watching these clever little rascals, Teacher Li couldn’t help but laugh again, shaking her head in amusement.
Looking down at Manzai, who was still gazing up at her obediently, Teacher Li steeled her resolve. She cleared her throat lightly, covering her mouth with a fist, and put on a stern face. “You did something wrong? What exactly did you do wrong?”
Seeing Teacher Li’s expression, Jiang Man realized that simply admitting fault wasn’t going to cut it this time.
After a moment’s thought, the adorable little one closed her eyes as if facing her doom, trembling as she raised her hand and opened her palm. “Wah, Teacher Li, can you hit it gently?”
The slight tremble in her voice, born of fear, made everyone’s hearts soften involuntarily.
Despite being terrified herself, the loyal little one still tried to shield her friends, taking all the blame upon herself.
She even tried to absolve the teacher who had been supervising nap time that afternoon.
In the activity room, under the astonished gazes of the little ones, Teacher Li raised her hand high.
“Plop, plop!”
Tears fell from the corners of the adorable little one’s eyes, her long, delicate eyelashes fluttering as she slowly opened her eyes.
Her hands didn’t hurt as much as she had expected.
Jiang Man’s damp eyes couldn’t hide her confusion as she looked at Teacher Li.
Seeing her teary eyes, Teacher Li smiled and gently pinched the child’s chubby cheeks. “Oh, Manman, what kind of image do you have of me in your heart? Do you think I’m the kind of bad teacher who punishes little ones without even listening to their explanations?”
With her cheeks pinched, the little one struggled to speak: “N-No!”
Fang Jin and the others, having just watched Teacher Li squat down and pat the floor twice, looked up at her laughing and teasing Jiang Man. With a joyful cry, they pounced over.
