- Chapter 25.1 - The Secret Snackers Alliance
Liu Ying’s gaze lingered for a long time on the dazed child nestled in Xu Nuo’s arms before she finally looked up at Xu Nuo.
Xu Nuo was momentarily stunned, unable to grasp the meaning behind Liu Ying’s words, but she nodded earnestly nonetheless.
“I know,” Xu Nuo said, puzzled. “Even though I’m a beta, Wen Yu and I have a very good relationship.”
Is that so?
Liu Ying remained silent, watching Xu Nuo and the child, Wen Qing, in her arms.
Sometimes, Liu Ying truly felt that this foolish woman, Xu Nuo, and that madwoman, Wen Yu, were a match made in heaven.
One was naturally slow-witted, viewing the other through a lens of innate fragility and pity; the other was a born actress, donning a facade of kindness visible only to Xu Nuo.
Liu Ying recalled the first time she and Jiang Feng heard Wen Yu’s name, it was at the funeral of Wen Yu’s omega mother, who had ended her miserable, chaotic life by destroying her gland in the bathtub at home and slitting her throat.
Just a few days later, Wen Yu’s alpha mother followed suit, taking her own life in the same bathtub where her wife had died, mimicking her manner of death.
At the Wen family funeral, a young Liu Ying and Jiang Feng caught their first glimpse of the rumored gloomy heir, whom the Wen family patriarch and his wife supposedly despised.
With just one distant glance, Liu Ying was certain: every member of the Wen family, from the eldest to the youngest, was sick.
It was said that Wen Yu’s omega mother had been forcibly taken by her alpha mother.
At the time, the omega had just married her beloved childhood sweetheart, an alpha, and the two were deeply in love. However, their compatibility was low, and they wished to have children, so they sought treatment at a private hospital under the Wen corporation.
Whether it was fate’s guidance or the omega’s misfortune, the former head of the Wen family encountered her in the hospital lobby.
Their compatibility was exceptionally high. With just one meeting, Wen Yu’s alpha mother fell in love at first sight, disregarding the omega’s marital status. She orchestrated the downfall of the omega’s childhood sweetheart, forcing him to part ways with her.
The delicate omega was forcibly married off and confined to the Wen family’s ancestral home.
Wen Yu was the product of this coercion.
Wen Yu’s mother had hoped that having a child would ease the omega’s hatred and improve her condition. But Wen Yu did not evoke any affection or maternal love in the omega; instead, she worsened the omega’s depression and self-destructive tendencies.
Deemed useless, Wen Yu was soon cast aside by her mother.
The Wen family’s ancestral home was perpetually filled with the omega’s hysterical screams, sharp pheromones, and the alpha’s increasingly frantic and aggressive scent, driven by her inability to win her beloved’s affection.
Growing up under the rejection and loathing of her omega mother and the indifference and disdain of her alpha mother, Wen Yu inherited the best of both mothers’ physical features, along with their hysterical and deranged temperaments.
Wen Yu was almost a perfect replica of her alpha mother.
After her mothers’ funerals, Wen Yu inherited the Wen family and, at the butler’s suggestion, transferred to Liu Ying and Jiang Feng’s school.
Without Liu Ying’s knowledge, Xu Nuo a beta with a bright and warm personality was running late as usual on Monday morning when she mistook Wen Yu, who was inspecting the school environment, for a timid freshman unsure how to enter the school gates after being late for the first time.
With her natural athleticism, Xu Nuo impulsively grabbed Wen Yu’s hand and pulled her toward her usual spot for climbing the wall. In one swift motion, she hoisted herself onto the wall, then looked down at Wen Yu, who was still standing there in a daze. Reaching out her hand, Xu Nuo called out cheerfully, “Don’t be scared, classmate! This wall isn’t high, I’ll catch you!”
As the heir of the Wen family, this was the first time Wen Yu had ever had someone take her hand like that. The warmth of Xu Nuo’s palm stirred unfamiliar feelings within her.
By the time Liu Ying found out that Xu Nuo and Wen Yu had met, everything was already spiraling out of control.
Liu Ying’s first instinct was to separate Xu Nuo from Wen Yu.
Truth be told, the rumors in their social circle were accurate: the Wen family, from the eldest to the youngest, were all obsessive madmen who prioritized their own emotions above all else.
Noticing Liu Ying staring blankly at Qingzai, Xu Nuo waved a hand in front of her face, pulling her back from her distant thoughts.
Liu Ying snapped back to reality and, seeing Xu Nuo’s puzzled expression, said seriously, “Xu Nuo, as your former friend, I’ll say one last thing to you.”
“Wen Yu isn’t the person you think she is. You should look into the history of the Wen family.”
“Unlike your feelings for Qingzai, to her, Qingzai is an invader, a mirror that leaves her nowhere to hide.”
“She should despise and loathe Qingzai, wishing to eliminate her as quickly as possible.”
Xu Nuo carried Wen Qing to the living room and sat down, Liu Ying’s final words echoing in her mind.
She set Wen Qing down, and the child stood steadily on the carpet. Looking up at her dazed mother, Wen Qing didn’t offer comfort but simply watched from a distance.
Wen Qing didn’t have many memories of her mother.
As the voices of Fang Jin and Mu Xi sounded from behind, Wen Qing took one last glance at her mother before walking off to join her little friends.
Left alone on the sofa, Xu Nuo sank deep into her own thoughts.
Once reunited with her friends, Wen Qing babbled about how Manman had been taken out to play by Jiang Feng. The two little ones instantly deflated like balloons and slumped onto the carpet.
Life without Manman was like summer without ice, winter without a coat, hunger without food, and thirst without water.
When the producer entered carrying Yuan Yuan and Wang Wang, the sight that greeted her was three listless little ones lying on the floor, lost in emptiness.
In contrast to the gloomy trio, Jiang Man was having the time of her life outside with her mother!
When it came to entertaining children, Chairwoman Jiang, once the king of kids, claimed second place, no one dared claim first.
Plus, Manman was an angel baby with low material desires and an even lower threshold for joy. With just a little effort to amuse her, Manman would laugh so hard her whole body shook.
Like a carefree, happy little puppy, she was utterly adorable.
As Jiang Man sat in her stroller, mesmerized by the dance competition performers in the mall’s main hall, a spoon and a small box suddenly appeared in her hands.
“Mama?” Manman looked up, puzzled.
Jiang Feng pressed a finger to her lips and winked at the little one. “This is a secret between Mother and Manman, okay? We can’t let Mommy know.”
Jiang Man, not quite understanding, held the box close to her side.
Seeing the contents of the container clearly, the little one’s eyes lit up instantly. Gripping the spoon tightly, she nodded vigorously and said, “Mhm!”
Without needing her mother’s guidance, the little one took the initiative to scoop up a tiny amount of the mint-green solid mixed with chocolate chips from the pitifully small portion in the container, handling the spoon with great care.
Jiang Man carefully maneuvered both hands to bring the spoonful of treat to her mouth.
“Mmm!”
A cool sensation, combined with the rich aroma of chocolate, melted in the little one’s mouth.
Jiang Feng scooped a spoonful for herself as well, looking proudly at the little one who was already completely absorbed in the treat.
Mint-chocolate ice cream was simply divine!
At first, the mother and daughter exchanged a few glances, but as they indulged further, they became so engrossed in scooping up the ice cream that they didn’t even look at each other anymore.
Satisfied, Director Jiang took out a tissue, wiped her own and the little one’s mouths clean, and casually tossed all the “evidence of their crime” into the trash bin.
The dance competition in the hall was nearing the end of its morning session. Jiang Feng pinched the cheek of the little one, who was in high spirits after finishing the ice cream, and prepared to take her back to the manor to rest.
But just as she was about to leave, the private communicator on her wrist began to buzz.
Jiang Feng stopped in her tracks, puzzled, and opened the communicator to answer the call.
The faces of four middle-aged women suddenly appeared on the screen, startling the little one, who had been happily swinging her feet.
After a moment of surprise, the little one quickly recognized them. Cupping her chubby cheeks with both hands, she greeted them one by one with a sweet, lisping voice, her eyes curved into crescents: “Gwandma, Gwamma, Auntie, Hewwo~”
The little one’s sweet, milky voice, with its indistinct pronunciation of sibilants, melted the hearts of the four women on the screen. They hurriedly greeted her in return.
“Manzai still remembers Grandma and Granny? Did you miss Granny?” Jiang Feng’s alpha mother seized the opportunity before her in-law could speak: “Is Manzai’s little program almost over? After it ends, do you want to come to Granny’s place to play? Granny also has a little pony, it’s Little Sun’s sister!”
Seeing that her daughter-in-law’s mother was playing dirty by interrupting, Liu Ying’s mother quickly cut in: “Come to Grandma’s place! Auntie and Grandma miss Manzai so much! Last time, Manzai went to Granny’s place. If you don’t come to Grandma’s, does that mean you don’t like Grandma?”
Liu Ying’s omega mother, though in her fifties, was well-maintained and had once been one of the top beauties in the entertainment industry. With a furrowed brow and reddened eyes, she could evoke sympathy from anyone, young or old.
Well, except for the two mothers-in-law.
Seeing her in-law pretending to cry to soften the little one’s heart, Old Director Jiang refused to be outdone and began sobbing dramatically, wiping away nonexistent tears.
Combined, the four women were over two hundred years old, yet they were weeping and whining in front of a little one who hadn’t even reached her first birthday.
The little one tried to comfort one, only for the other to cry even louder. When she turned to comfort the other, the first one would start wailing relentlessly.
At that moment, the little one felt as if she had traveled back to the previous day, when she had to placate her younger sister and Wangwang, two little ones vying for attention.
Unable to calm any of them, Jiang Man lifted her head and looked helplessly at her mother.
Seeing the tears welling up in the little one’s round eyes, Director Jiang cleared her throat and turned the communicator screen toward herself. “Manzai just cried yesterday because she couldn’t calm someone down. Mom, please stop teasing her like this.”
Hearing that Manzai had cried, the two elderly women immediately stopped their fake sobbing.
“Manzai cried?” Old Director Jiang asked, somewhat incredulous.
In their memories, apart from the time right after birth when the nurse had given the little one a firm spank, causing her to cry pitifully, the baby had always been a beaming, cheerful little sunbeam.
Hearing that Manzai had actually cried, the four elders anxiously pressed Jiang Feng for details.
“I only found out yesterday after I got back that Manzai had cried,” Director Jiang explained helplessly, looking at her mother and mom who had spent the entire day with her. “I was with you all day at the company handling affairs, how would I know the specifics?”
Reminded by her daughter, Old Director Jiang and her wife patted their heads as if suddenly realizing the obvious.
Even without knowing the details, their hearts ached for the little one.
The mothers ordered Director Jiang to hand her light brain over to the baby. The four elders leaned close to the camera, cooing and fussing over the chubby-cheeked little one holding the device.
Director Jiang had grown up receiving similar doting attention from her own grandmothers, so she wasn’t surprised by her mothers’ behavior.
Checking the time on her work light brain, Director Jiang decided it was time to head back with the baby.
This was Jiang Man’s first time having great-grandmothers and grandmothers, and she found it all very novel. No matter what the elders asked, Jiang Man responded like a little echo, her obedient and adorable demeanor melting the hearts of all four elders. They chatted with the baby in high-pitched, affectionate voices the whole way home.
When the car stopped in the manor’s parking lot, Jiang Feng turned to the little one, who was still holding the light brain and playing echo. “Manzai, we’re home. Time to say goodbye to your great-grandmas and grandmas.”
Jiang Man was reluctant she really enjoyed chatting with her great-grandmas. But seeing the serious look in her mother’s eyes, the little one pouted and handed over the light brain reluctantly.
