Rebirth: Using Love as an Excuse for Cruelty - Chapter 15
When Yu Linfei drove to find Su Weixi, he had planned to question his friend thoroughly. But the moment he saw Su Weixi, he dropped that idea.
The reason was simple: Su Weixi looked too exhausted.
The man, who was usually full of energy, had somehow become incredibly thin. He looked as if he had experienced some horrible torture and had only just escaped with his life.
Yu Linfei was a sensible person; he knew that digging into someone else’s wounds was not the right thing to do. Although he knew that if he insisted on an answer, Su Weixi would not lie to him because of their friendship, Yu Linfei would rather not know if the price of the answer was hurting his friend. After all, there was more than one way to find the truth.
“Baiqing Meng…” Holding the steering wheel, Yu Linfei whispered the name.
He had really underestimated him. Not only did the boy dare to attack his cat, but it also seemed that whatever happened to Su Weixi had a lot to do with him. How interesting, Yu Linfei thought with a smile. It seemed it was time to find a moment to have a chat with him.
However, the most important task now was naturally to cure his cat. Turning his head slightly to look at Wen Cheng, who had fallen asleep in the basket again, Yu Linfei’s brows furrowed.
Earlier, because he was afraid something would happen to the cat, he had ignored its strange behavior. Now that he thought about it, it was weird. Wouldn’t it be weird? Would a normal cat think of calling its owner when a stranger entered the house? Besides, how did he even know the phone number? Although the truth seemed to be right in front of him, Yu Linfei still found it hard to believe… could there really be such a thing as a cat demon in this world?
No matter how open-minded Yu Linfei was, he couldn’t subconsciously admit that he was raising a cat demon that could make phone calls.
“Sigh, forget the cat demon part, why is he so clumsy?” After parking the car, Yu Linfei sighed as he lifted the basket. Looking at the small ball that was Wen Cheng, his heart felt nothing but softness.
The sleeping Wen Cheng did not know about Yu Linfei’s complicated feelings. At this moment, he had entered a magical dream.
In the dream, he was already dead.
A dagger was stuck in his chest. The man who killed him looked down at him with a look of disgust and a mocking smile. The face that was once gentle now looked like a demon. The man pulled the dagger out of Wen Cheng’s chest forcefully, and then he cried.
Yes, he cried.
Even though his face stayed blank and he didn’t make a sound, crystal tears spilled from his eyes, sliding down his cheeks and dropping onto the ground one by one. The man stood still, looking emotionless, but the flowing tears revealed his painful feelings clearly.
Wen Cheng was also in pain. In the dream, he felt waves of tearing, sharp pain in his chest. He didn’t even know if the pain was because of the dagger or because of his intense emotions. He wanted to ask, Yu Linfei, why are you crying? You are the one who killed me, so why are you crying?
But Wen Cheng couldn’t ask, because he was dreaming, and in the dream, he was already dead.
Wen Cheng couldn’t remember the rest of the dream clearly. He could only vaguely recall… Yu Linfei kneeling down, pulling him into his arms, and whispering constantly in his ear. Wen Cheng couldn’t hear the words, but he could feel a sadness carved into his very bones.
In the dream, Wen Cheng felt no resentment at all. He seemed to know something—he knew… why Yu Linfei killed him.
Then, Wen Cheng woke up. His head hurt as if it were about to explode. He instinctively tried to use his hands to cover his head, but when he reached out, he found his hands had turned into a pair of fluffy paws. He had forgotten he had turned into a cat.
Shaking his dizzy head, Wen Cheng realized that Yu Linfei had brought him home again. He was currently lying on Yu Linfei’s big bed. His mouth tasted a bit bitter—ah, Yu Linfei must have fed him medicine, right?
Feeling his heavy body relax a little, Wen Cheng decided to take a good rest first and stop pushing himself. While he was at it, he could think about what the situation actually was.
Without the excitement he felt when he first saw Su Weixi, a calmed-down Wen Cheng thought seriously about his situation.
First, he had truly turned into a cat. It wasn’t a dream or a hallucination. He, Wen Cheng, was now a cat. Second, he had memories of Yu Linfei. From meeting and knowing each other to falling in love, he remembered every event and every detail clearly. If someone said this was his imagination, Wen Cheng would never believe it. Finally, he saw Baiqing Meng, who was supposed to have broken up with Yu Linfei, and Su Weixi, who was supposed to be dead. This meant the time he was reborn into was different from the time he died.
In conclusion, Wen Cheng reached an absurd answer: he might have returned to a few years ago, to the days before he ever met Yu Linfei.
He vaguely remembered that Yu Linfei used to have a cat, but Wen Cheng really couldn’t remember what that cat looked like. When he was human, he was allergic to cat hair; although he didn’t hate small animals, he definitely didn’t like them either. And in his memory, the time Yu Linfei spent raising a cat seemed quite short.
But if Wen Cheng’s guess was correct and he really became Yu Linfei’s cat, then it meant Yu Linfei would eventually meet another “Wen Cheng.” He might have a chance to see himself and Yu Linfei fall in love.
This is too much like science fiction, he thought. He felt his ideas were becoming more and more ridiculous. But when he looked at his fluffy body, he had to admit that even the most ridiculous dreams can come true one day.
“Blacky, you’re awake?” A gentle voice interrupted Wen Cheng’s thoughts. He turned his head and saw Yu Linfei holding a small bowl. His expression had a hint of worry, but that very gentleness made Wen Cheng shiver.
He would never forget the gentleness Yu Linfei showed him during the three years they were lovers, and he would never forget how cold Yu Linfei’s face was when he killed him. Seeing Yu Linfei like this now made him think of his old self, who was spoiled until he lost all sense of reality.
When prey is blinded by gentleness, is the final result a bloody slaughter by the predator?
“What are you staring at?” Seeing the cat with golden eyes looking at him without moving, Yu Linfei helplessly reached out and gently tapped Wen Cheng’s head. “Next time you see a stranger enter the house, remember not to let them find you. Big brother isn’t afraid of them taking things; I’m just afraid of something happening to Blacky.”
“Meow.” The soft meow didn’t mean much; Wen Cheng just answered Yu Linfei casually.
“Being sick is uncomfortable, right? Come, eat something.” When Yu Linfei’s hand got closer, Wen Cheng finally saw what was in the bowl. Porridge that smelled like milk was still steaming. The moment the rich scent hit Wen Cheng’s nose, Wen Cheng gave in.
Forget about revenge or being tricked; being full is the most important thing right now!! Besides, he already knew Yu Linfei’s true face, so there was no way he would be tricked a second time, right? So hungry, so hungry! With drool hanging from his mouth, Wen Cheng moved his short little legs and crawled toward Yu Linfei. If he were a dog… his tail would probably be wagging so hard it would break.
“Don’t hurry.” Seeing Wen Cheng’s eager look, Yu Linfei didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He originally thought a sick cat would be very picky about food and made liquid food specifically for cats. But now it seemed Yu Linfei even felt that if he just threw down some random meat, Wen Cheng would come running happily.
This is so good! Held in Yu Linfei’s arms and fed spoonful after spoonful of warm cheese porridge, Wen Cheng was happy. The porridge was made with millet and cheese for cats; it smelled great and tasted good too.
After eating the porridge bit by bit, Wen Cheng stood on Yu Linfei’s lap with a full belly, stretched, and then rubbed his chin against Yu Linfei’s hand over and over, wanting Yu Linfei to scratch him.
Well, to put it simply, even though he turned into a cat, Wen Cheng still hadn’t fixed that missing “logic” part of his brain. In fact, it seemed even more broken now.
Seeing Wen Cheng like this, Yu Linfei finally felt relieved. When they first got home, he had used a syringe to give Wen Cheng medicine. Seeing the cat lying quietly in his arms without any energy, Yu Linfei was truly worried. Such a small thing could be bullied so badly if one wasn’t careful. It seemed he should change the locks on the house.
After feeding the medicine, Yu Linfei moved Wen Cheng to his bed and went to the kitchen to make food for the cat. While carefully cooking the porridge, he couldn’t help but look at his fridge and started seriously considering whether to buy a smaller one. Watching a tiny kitten climb a fridge through the security camera was really a test for one’s heart.
“Heh.” Suddenly realizing his thoughts were leaning more and more toward worrying about his cat, Yu Linfei shook his head helplessly. He wasn’t sure if raising Blacky was a good or bad thing.
Later, Yu Linfei who was sitting nearby finishing some work saw Wen Cheng wake up. He hurried to the kitchen to bring out the porridge he had kept warm. As he walked toward Wen Cheng, he was still thinking about how to trick his cat into eating.
But Wen Cheng didn’t give him anything to worry about. He drank the porridge obediently, and he seemed to have much more energy.
“You really are precious.” Looking at Wen Cheng, who had his eyes squinted in comfort while his chin was being scratched, Yu Linfei’s expression was not relaxed. This was because the thing he was thinking about right now was it was time for a real talk with Baiqing Meng.
