Chapter 52: I’ll Make it for You When You Get Back.
After arriving at the restaurant, Yue Lei quickly placed their order.
Eight years ago, the live-streaming industry was chaotic. Streamers hadn’t yet found their niche, and the popular food broadcasters were imitating the Japanese and Korean mukbang style, focusing on how much the streamer could eat to entertain the audience.
The government hadn’t started regulating this area yet, but genuinely talented large-eaters were rare. This led to many streamers eating huge amounts on camera but inducing vomiting afterward, which wasted food and damaged their health.
Furthermore, many streamers ate in an exaggerated manner, as if they had a bottomless abyss for a mouth, swallowing everything without actually savoring the food. This caused many viewers to dislike, even detest, this type of food stream, quickly scrolling past it.
Yue Lei had considered doing food streaming before. Ultimately, she decided to cover the topic; her streams always had different themes, and if she skipped this one, she might soon run out of content. She was not a large eater, so her streams were branded as food tasting and sharing.
At most, she had bought some fried scorpions and fried silkworm pupae on the way over, hoping these novel foods would attract attention.
Yue Lei openly showed Mo Yingxue her live-streaming preparations.
They chose a discreet, corner table against the wall. While adjusting the camera angle on her phone, she observed the surroundings. The warm yellow light made her complexion look good, and the food seemed tempting.
She smiled and commented: “I’m streaming outside today, so I didn’t bring a fill light or anything, but luckily the lighting in this restaurant is very bright.”
Seeing her pick up her phone again after seemingly setting the angle, Mo Yingxue’s heart leapt to her throat. She couldn’t help but ask, “Sis, aren’t you ready?”
Yue Lei smiled at her: “I am, but I forgot to send out the live stream notification, and most importantly, I forgot to tell my sugar mama. I might say some strange things during the stream later—it’s all for show, so don’t take it to heart, okay?”
Then, Mo Yingxue watched, dumbfounded, as Yue Lei opened the chat window with Ms. Z. She secretly gritted her teeth, thinking this was really going to expose her.
Clenching her fists in the shadows, Mo Yingxue spoke: “Sis, you go ahead. I need to use the restroom.”
Once she was in a private spot, she quickly called Aunt Wang. Her heart pounding like a drum, she asked: “Aunt Wang, are you still at home?”
After receiving a firm confirmation, Mo Yingxue relaxed slightly: “Please do something for me, but don’t tell Yue Lei afterward, okay? Go to the private cinema now, open the recent browsing history, and open the ‘Qingyin Live’ link. Then check which account is logged in…”
After instructing Aunt Wang on how to send gifts, the boulder in Mo Yingxue’s heart finally lifted. She calmly returned to the table, pretending that the person instructing Aunt Wang to join the crowd and send gifts was not her, waiting for the stream to start as if nothing had happened.
Although Ms. Z hadn’t replied, Yue Lei was reassured when she saw her instantly join the empty live stream room.
Once all the food was served, Yue Lei asked the waiter for a new plate. She arranged the fried scorpions, fried centipedes, and other insects she had bought on the road. Yue Lei waved at the camera, keeping her voice low to avoid disturbing others: “Hello everyone, today CEO Yue is doing a food stream!”
As expected, this announcement shocked the audience.
“Doing food streaming requires a certain physique, right? CEO Yue, you’re tall, but you’re a normal size. Can you eat several pounds of rice and meat in one sitting? Don’t strain yourself!”
“Nooo, I don’t mean to be malicious, but I feel like food streamers are so greasy. Their hands are greasy, their faces are greasy, and some even get sauce all over their faces. It totally kills my appetite, and I start feeling gaggy just watching. I followed you for the eye candy.”
“CEO Yue, you’re not going to follow others and induce vomiting, are you? Don’t forget this is a live stream; disappearing for ten minutes is way too suspicious…”
Since she started streaming, this was the first time Yue Lei had seen her fans raise so many doubts.
“Give me a little more trust, guys! We don’t waste food!” She picked up her phone and started showing everyone the crab pot, various side dishes, desserts, fried insects, etc., on the table. “I’ll definitely do what I can. Look, I ordered a meal for two and invited a beautiful lady to eat with me. We don’t do the ‘large-eater’ live stream thing here. We’re purely experiencing life and sharing good food!”
With that, she shot a stiff, flirtatious look at Mo Yingxue, speaking in a ingratiating tone: “Xiao Xue, can you wave to everyone and prove that I can’t finish all this alone? You don’t have to show your face, just your hand.”
Mo Yingxue was momentarily stunned. She had been so preoccupied with Ms. Z not being able to send gifts that she completely forgot she was sitting at the same table as Yue Lei and might appear on the stream…
Seeing her wife remain motionless for a long time, while everyone in the live room started mocking her, joking that her “friend” was actually hired, and some even started pitying her for traveling alone, Yue Lei was incredibly nervous. Holding the phone with one hand, she secretly tugged at her wife’s clothing under the table with the other.
Mo Yingxue finally snapped out of it, sheepishly waving at the camera: “Hello everyone, I’m CEO Yue’s friend, and we’re eating this meal together today.”
“We’re super, super close friends, traveling together recently,” Yue Lei said dramatically to the camera, putting her phone back in place now that she had received a satisfactory answer.
Next, they started eating. Yue Lei introduced each dish to the camera. Every bite felt like the fans were eating it first. This made everyone salivate.
Even though it was dinnertime, the food in their own bowls didn’t look as appetizing as hers. Yue Lei also ate elegantly, not like other food streamers who gorged themselves, rushing to finish everything.
She dissected the crab with fluid movements, her slender and strong fingers flying, using the crab tools with practiced ease. Not only that, but Yue Lei was also very attentive to her wife, shelling several crabs and giving them to Xiao Xue.
The atmosphere in this live stream room was completely different from other food streams.
“Oh my god, I always wanted to possess CEO Yue’s soul and live the life of a female celebrity. But today is different. I want to possess Xiao Xue’s soul and experience the joy of being pampered by CEO Yue!”
“If all food streams were like this, I’d watch them every day. I feel like the takeout in my own bowl smells better now.”
“I need to know in three seconds if this restaurant is opening a branch near me. I eat dinner early, and now that I’ve finished, I’m hungry again.”
“First time watching someone eat without being bored, and I don’t have to worry about food waste. If it were me, I think I could finish this meal for two alone!”
Inside the Mo residence’s private cinema, Aunt Wang watched for a while and finally understood what her young mistress meant. She was out of town eating with Miss Yue!
Following her mistress’s instructions, she occasionally sent some gifts. Every time she sent one, Miss Yue’s eyes would curve into a smile and she would thank her, which was very heartwarming.
“My young mistress said I either shouldn’t talk or should send a paid comment. Where is that thing?” Aunt Wang sent gifts for a while, muttering as she started to study the page. After much effort, she finally found the place to send a paid comment. She thought for a moment and typed:
Z: “Is it delicious? (Paid Comment)”
Yue Lei knew Ms. Z had joined and was watching her activity, aware that she hadn’t said anything for a while. Seeing this sudden comment, she was genuinely surprised.
She immediately replied: “Of course it’s delicious, ZZ-baby! I specifically chose the highest-rated restaurant in Fencheng. Look how fresh and cleanly prepared their crab is.”
After that comment, Ms. Z was silent again for a long time, turning into a gift-giving angel. But because it was a paid comment, the message floated at the very top. Many people started to gloat:
Sakura: “Does anyone else feel like Ms. Z is questioning CEO Yue? Like, the real meaning of that sentence is—’Is it delicious to eat with another woman?'”
“Yes, yes! I think so too! I think the expanded version of that sentence is—’Is it delicious? I’m almost shipping you two (cold laughter).'”
“I know this one! It could also be—’Is it delicious? Is it delicious to eat with her, or delicious to eat with me?'”
Yue Lei knew that some people in her stream shipped her and Ms. Z as a couple. This created a lot of entertainment, so she played along. As long as she knew their private interactions were completely normal, everyone was free to believe what they wanted.
But right now, Mo Yingxue, the woman she genuinely cared about and was in a gray area with, was sitting right next to her. She was terrified that Xiao Xue would feel uncomfortable seeing these comments.
Yue Lei avoided the crucial point: “Stop messing around, guys! Ms. Z is just concerned about whether my food is good. She’s a huge supporter of my career; she definitely won’t be mad to see me with such a good friend! I’ll take you out for crab pot next time I have a chance, Ms. Z!”
Aunt Wang knew she was replying to her. She smiled: “Miss Yue is a really good girl, still thinking of an old woman like me.” Thinking for a moment, she picked up the remote and, after a difficult attempt, found the place to send a paid comment and typed:
Z: “No need. I’ll make it for you when you get back. (Paid Comment)”
This sentence was too much; it was like announcing to the world that the streamer and the top gifter had met in private and were living together. This time, not only did Yue Lei’s expression freeze, but the entire live stream room erupted.
“Aaaah, when did you two secretly meet up? How could you not bring us along!”
“Am I seeing this right? Ms. Z means you’ve met in private? And are close enough to eat at each other’s houses? My OTP came true, but why does it feel so unreal… It feels like a lot of things just shattered…”
“Something feels weird, but I can’t put my finger on it.”
“Huh? I always thought CEO Yue was the kind of strong woman who couldn’t be bent by power or corrupted by wealth. But she’ll meet Ms. Z just for some gifts? It turns out everyone on the internet is just playing a role.”
Yue Lei was speechless but forced herself to say: “Ms. Z, if you want to treat me to a meal, just treat me. Why phrase it so strangely… We haven’t even met yet. You’re so busy, how would I dare bother you…”
Hearing this, Xiao Xue, who had been quietly eating, finally realized something was wrong in the stream. She leaned over and saw the pinned paid comment. Mo Yingxue froze, thinking she shouldn’t have told Aunt Wang she could send comments. At this point, she didn’t care if she was discovered.
“I’m going to buy some drinks.” She grabbed her phone and quickly ran out of the restaurant. Standing in a corner, she logged out of the ‘Qingyin Live’ account she had registered, effectively kicking Aunt Wang out of the Ms. Z account.
Z: “You’ve all misunderstood. We haven’t met. But we’re all from Southwest City. What’s the problem with saying ‘when you get back’? (Paid Comment)”
With the primary source’s explanation, all the doubts were instantly resolved. Yue Lei also breathed a sigh of relief. She looked like she was about to cry: “People are too quick to ship things now, making up romance where there is none. Now look, I almost ruined ZZ-baby’s reputation! I told you she’s a genuinely good person. We’ve been friends for so long and haven’t said or done anything out of line… I really didn’t expect ZZ-baby to know how to make crab pot. That dish is incredibly hard to season.”
Yue Lei first clarified that their relationship wasn’t what everyone was speculating, and then quickly steered the conversation back to the food stream. Before long, everyone had forgotten about the little incident.
Mo Yingxue felt she had been away for too long. She quickly ran to the craft beer shop next door and ordered two sweet fruit smoothies. Before returning to the restaurant with the drinks, she typed one-handed:
Z: “You guys eat first. I’m going to get dinner too. Goodbye everyone. (Paid Comment)”
Z: “Ten Thousand Lanterns X3”
On the other side, Aunt Wang stared at the screen, which read: “You are not currently logged in. Please log in to publish friendly comments,” and fell into deep thought.
