Pretty Wife Insists I Live Off Her - Chapter 38
Chapter 38: She Only Dared to Tread Carefully.
The weather was fair and the skies were clear and bright.
Yue Lei’s mood was equally cheerful. Mo Yingxue was done with her exams today, and they could finally go out and have fun!
She set off early today, walked a few extra steps, parked the car, and waited for Mo Yingxue in the small garden closest to the examination center, holding a bouquet of lily of the valley.
She loved giving flowers to Mo Yingxue. Red, white, pink… She had given her every kind of flower in the last life, and Mo Yingxue seemed to love them all. She would carefully arrange them in a vase, prepare nutrient solutions, use fresh-cut flower methods, and even research using Sprite or Gatorade to extend their life.
This was the first time Yue Lei was sending flowers in this life. She chose the most simple, elegant, and least likely to be wrong—flowers that looked unremarkable but were actually quite expensive.
Yue Lei watched Mo Yingxue happily take photos with the flowers, smiling brightly. “Xiao Xue, after you rest a bit from your exams, let’s head to Fencheng. My good friend won’t be back for the summer, so let’s go visit her. She said she’d treat me to dinner; I’ve been looking forward to it.”
Mo Yingxue glanced at Yue Lei’s long, beautiful, distinctly jointed hand. She placed the flowers in her palm. “Hold this for me… Yes, that angle, don’t move… Just in time. My mom is coming back for a visit. Let’s spend two days with her.”
Yue Lei was quite happy acting as a human flower stand, but when she heard the latter half of the sentence, the hairs on her neck stood up instantly. Anxiety and unease crossed her face: “Xiao Xue, when is your mom coming back? Should I move out?”
Mo Yingxue took the flowers back once she had enough photos and frowned at the suggestion: “Why would you move out?” Her expression was so matter-of-fact that it made Yue Lei seem like the abnormal one, the one making a fuss over nothing.
Yue Lei stammered: “I… No, we’re sharing a room right now, and the house has so many empty rooms. Our relationship looks completely inappropriate…” She explained anxiously, thinking Mo Yingxue hadn’t understood her meaning.
To her surprise, her wife scoffed, uncaring: “She’s only coming back for a conference and an academic reception this time. She won’t be home during the day, and she’ll come back late at night. Besides, I don’t think she’ll care about these things. Even if you two meet, she’ll probably just treat you like air.”
Yue Lei carefully recalled Ms. Mo Shu, whom she had met in the previous life. She always wore a slightly curled, ear-length bob, a suit jacket and skirt, and gold-rimmed glasses, her face sharp and her lip peaks prominent, giving off an unapproachable aura. Yue Lei was a person who loved to joke and liven the mood, but in front of Ms. Mo Shu, she only dared to tread carefully.
It wasn’t until three years into their marriage, when Mo Yingxue went on a field trip to Africa, contracted a serious viral infection, and fell severely ill—and Yue Lei became frantic with worry, developing a mouth full of fever blisters—that Ms. Mo Shu finally revealed her true feelings to her. She admitted that she had initially agreed to their marriage because she saw that Yue Lei genuinely loved Xiao Xue and could provide her with an excellent living environment.
She had even advised Yue Lei not to be too heartbroken, assuring her that they had found the best doctors and provided the best medical environment, so Mo Yingxue would surely be fine.
At the time, Yue Lei never imagined that Mo Yingxue would one day be too sick to get out of bed. She had only been away for a business trip to attend an annual event with her streamers, and when she returned, Mo Yingxue was like that. Yue Lei had seriously considered dissolving her company and letting go of all her streamers, planning to stay by Mo Yingxue’s side forever.
It was Mo Shu who told her, “Xiao Xue is sick now, so you must hold strong and not collapse. This illness will cost a lot of money, and raising my daughter will also cost a lot of money. If the financial source is severed, everything will be beyond recovery.”
It was only then that Yue Lei checked her impulsive emotions, worked hard to launch various money-making activities, and earned a substantial amount of money.
Thinking about it now, only such an elegant, proud, and rational person could raise a truly refined young lady like Mo Yingxue. Though Yue Lei no longer had a mother, she couldn’t develop any mother-daughter affection for Ms. Mo Shu. It had always been respect, nothing more. They only interacted during holidays.
Now she was about to see her again, and her own identity was ambiguous. She truly didn’t know what to do.
Seeing Yue Lei lost in thought and looking troubled, Mo Yingxue was a little annoyed. She kicked Yue Lei’s foot in frustration: “My mom is coming back. Why are you so scared? She won’t eat you.”
The thought of illegally cohabiting in front of such a traditional person made Yue Lei desperately want to escape.
She hooked her finger around Mo Yingxue’s clothing corner: “Xiao Xue, I think we really shouldn’t sleep in the same room. It will be hard to explain if we’re caught, and we’re not dating… In short, it’s all too much trouble. Can we just wait until your mom leaves, okay?”
“Are you sure?” Mo Yingxue raised an eyebrow, looking at her.
Yue Lei’s eyes flickered, and she nodded.
Mo Yingxue simply deposited the lily of the valley into Yue Lei’s arms, her expression completely calm, and strode forward: “If we’re not staying together, then we’re not staying together. Let’s go back and move your things right now. I’m too lazy to move, so you take your things to the downstairs guest room. If we’re going to avoid suspicion, the farther apart we are, the better.”
With that attitude, Yue Lei couldn’t quite figure out what she meant. But when she heard that they couldn’t even stay in adjacent rooms, her heart twinged slightly.
However, on second thought, Mo Yingxue’s arrangement seemed better. She was originally hired as Mo Yingxue’s painting model, and although she had done many outrageous things and crossed boundaries, staying in the guest room seemed the most appropriate. That way, Ms. Mo Shu definitely wouldn’t suspect anything.
She quickly walked two steps to catch up with Mo Yingxue. A smile spread across her lips: “Xiao Xue, you’re right. More distance will make your mother less suspicious. Then I’ll live next door to the cats! If you want to find me, you can just pretend to go pet the cats, and we can meet secretly right under your mother’s nose.”
Mo Yingxue had been angry, but hearing this, she found it rather exciting. She hadn’t introduced Yue Lei or their feelings to her mother yet. Given her mother’s nature, she would likely look down on the rough and unrestrained Yue Lei. This person beside her specialized in having a short memory and being cheerfully foolish every day; she did many things that Mo Yingxue herself found hard to overlook.
Directly facing her mother’s scrutiny… the risk was too high.
Mo Yingxue reached out and took the bouquet from Yue Lei, letting the fragrant aroma envelop her: “Let’s go back and move. I’ll help you.”
Seeing that she was no longer angry, Yue Lei bounded over again like a large dog, grinning widely: “Xiao Xue, when is your mother coming back? Did she give you a specific time?” If humans grew tails on their backsides, she would definitely be wagging hers wildly right now.
Mo Yingxue: “Tomorrow. Sometime after 2 PM tomorrow.”
“That’s still early,” Yue Lei wheedled: “Can we still sleep in the same bed tonight? Since we won’t be together for several days, I need to hold you properly.”
Not just hold her, she wanted to kiss her, too. She needed to draw out the kisses for the next few days in advance to feel calm and at peace.
“That’s fine,” Mo Yingxue’s ears turned slightly red. “But I can still come find you later, as long as my mom goes to sleep…” She deliberately spoke with righteous justification, making her emotions seem normal. She didn’t want to appear like the person who would toss and turn if she didn’t sleep in the same bed as Yue Lei.
But Yue Lei was completely taken in by this pretense. She didn’t think twice. She let out a happy cheer, practically jumping for joy.
Yue Lei beamed: “That’s great! I’ll leave the door unlocked for you every day! I can’t sleep if you don’t come!”
