Chapter 28: She Couldn’t Bear to See Her on the Streets.
Fang Dan was a one-woman show, a photographer, makeup artist, wig stylist, and post-production editor all in one.
The main reason she was living in a youth hostel recently was that she had a falling out with her former roommate.
But she was busy with her job as a sketch model on weekdays and with her “two-dimensional” hobbies on weekends, so she didn’t have time to find a proper place to rent.
And she felt that the price of staying in a youth hostel was about the same as renting a small, rundown room nearby.
But at the hostel, someone helped with cleaning, and other than occasionally having to share a room with someone and not being able to buy too many things, it was more enjoyable than living alone.
In Fang Dan’s opinion, with a good foundation like Yue Lei, she could cosplay any gender or age and be a great top or bottom.
Seeing Yue Lei looking quite frightened by the pink wig, she waved her hand and urged: “I’ll definitely make you look good. Stop doubting yourself and go take off your makeup!”
Half an hour later, looking at herself in the mirror, Yue Lei felt that something was just off.
The big, sparkling eyes, the light, moisturizing lip gloss, and the curled, exaggerated false eyelashes were things she wouldn’t normally use.
But these unfamiliar features put together transformed her into an energetic and cute little magical girl idol.
Yue Lei pulled on the hem of her short, puffy skirt and clicked her tongue: “If I could have cosplayed like this when I was thirteen or fourteen, I would have been so happy.”
“I told you height wasn’t an issue. The setting for the magical idol, Yuu-chan, in the manga is 1.6 meters, but her body proportion is like a supermodel!” Fang Dan was extremely satisfied with her work today and took several photos of her makeup.
Hearing Yue Lei’s complaints, she couldn’t help but laugh: “My favorite character wasn’t even born when you were thirteen. Come on, look at me and tilt your head while doing a cat paw motion.”
This was a completely different style from the aggressive vampire from before.
When she cosplayed Zhenni Zhang, Yue Lei was basically acting like herself. She didn’t even have to think about how to pose to get good shots.
Just by her standing next to a window or spacing out under an iron street lamp, Fang Dan would shout happily, “That’s it!” and “Good, turn your face to the side a little. Yes, that expression!”
But when it was time to cosplay Yuu-chan, Yue Lei felt like she had become a bad student.
She wasn’t cute enough, she didn’t know how to pout and act cute, and even the slightest pigeon-toed stance felt like it was going to kill her.
Fang Dan had to put down her camera and looked at Yue Lei with a pained expression: “No, your expression is still as firm as if you’re going to war. We’ve been acting cute for half an hour. Why do you still look so unyielding?”
If she had known what kind of character she liked when she agreed to do the free-of-charge shoot, Yue Lei definitely wouldn’t have done it with her.
She said in annoyance: “I can’t help it. I told you I’m not a pretty girl, but you insisted on forcing me into this! Now look. My face is pretty cute, but I can’t do anything else!”
“Sigh, you’re actually pretty cute when you’re scolding me right now, just like how Yuu-chan’s strawberry and blueberry ice cream sundae is always eaten by Hoo-hoo Pig.” Fang Dan couldn’t get mad at a person dressed as Yuu-chan, and her attitude softened again.
She thought for a moment, lifted her leg, and walked toward the ice cream shop on the street: “Let’s go. My treat. Maybe eating something sweet will make you more like sweet Yuu-chan.”
Sure enough, when Yue Lei abandoned her dignity as a top and focused on fighting the ice cream, her whole body finally exuded a cute and sweet aura.
“Forget it. The theme for this photoshoot will be ‘Yuu-chan’s Sweet Food Tour.'”
Fang Dan sighed for a moment and picked up her camera to snap away at the natural-looking Yue Lei.
After finishing the ice cream, she unhopefully laid out a blanket on the grass and asked Yue Lei to sit on it with her feet tucked in, but as soon as the girl thought about acting cute, she straightened her back and started doing some poses that completely broke the character’s persona.
There was no other way. Fang Dan dug into her own pockets again and bought her a series of sweet foods like waffles, marshmallows, and milk tea. While she was eating and having fun, Fang Dan took a bunch of great shots.
In the end, the money she spent on food was enough to hire a professional sweet-style model for a sample shoot.
However, looking at the face that hardly needed any post-production editing in the photos, if Fang Dan had to choose again next time, she would still choose Yue Lei’s known beauty.
After finally finishing the two cosplay shoots, it was already dark.
Yue Lei took off Yuu-chan’s pink wig, tidied it up, and returned it to Fang Dan: “You can take the wig back. I’ll wash the clothes and return them to you later.”
She was a woman of principle. She had to wash the clothes she wore herself.
Yue Lei took off the hair net and all the bobby pins in her hair in front of the mirror. After all the restraints were gone, she shook her head around like a dog after a bath and let out a comfortable sigh.
She remembered that Fang Dan was in a difficult financial situation but had been treating her to food all day for the sake of the photos, and she only had a cup of milk tea herself.
Yue Lei asked, a little embarrassed: “Want to get some hot pot? My treat.”
The two of them hadn’t hired anyone else to help. Fang Dan was carrying clothes and a camera. She had been working hard all day.
As soon as she heard there was a free dinner, she agreed faster than anyone: “Let’s go!”
…
After they finished eating, it was completely dark.
She was full, so the smell from the small stalls at the intersection just seemed bad to her.
She teased Fang Dan: “I’m never eating with you again. You don’t eat any spicy food. What’s the point of living!”
Fang Dan shrugged nonchalantly: “Spicy is a form of pain. I just don’t like it. The mandarin duck pot (a hot pot with two sections, one spicy and one not spicy) was invented for people like me.”
“You would never survive in Sichuan,” Yue Lei said, remembering the image of Fang Dan constantly complaining about the spice when she accidentally dropped a piece of spicy hot pot meat into the bone broth pot. She felt that it would be hard for her to survive out in the world.
She walked toward where the car was parked and said: “I didn’t drink. I can give you a ride home. Where do you live now?”
Fang Dan looked at her in surprise: “You bought a car after not seeing me for a few days?”
Hearing this, Yue Lei was a little embarrassed: “It’s my employer’s car. She just lets me drive it.”
The two of them had chatted a lot during the photoshoot. Fang Dan knew that her good looks had been noticed by a rich student at the art academy.
She was hired as a private model and assistant and now had a job with free food and lodging and no worries.
But she didn’t expect the treatment to be so good. She even had a car, and she could drive it whenever she wanted!
The closer they got to the parking lot, the more uneasy Fang Dan felt.
When she heard the sound of Yue Lei’s car keys, she stiffly turned her head and asked: “Sister, you didn’t drive that red and black Porsche, did you?”
Yue Lei giggled: “Yeah. I specifically chose this one when I left. I don’t have to take my employer to school today, so I can be a little flashy. It matches the vampire demon hunter outfit I wore when I left, right!”
Her own poverty was painful, but her friend’s success was even more heartbreaking.
Fang Dan was so jealous. She first sat in the back to feel the space and then put her backpack down and sat in the front passenger seat.
She said with envy and jealousy: “You bum, are you living off her? You’ve only been working for less than a month, and your employer is letting you drive a whole car?”
“Living off her?” Yue Lei was stung by those three words.
She thought about it seriously: “I don’t think so. She hasn’t acted like she’s in love with me, and I haven’t used my body to please her.
We just have a simple employment relationship, and my employer is just very, very nice.”
In Yue Lei’s understanding, in their previous life, she was the one who worked outside and earned money to support the family. Mo Yingxue was in charge of the household and just needed to be beautiful.
Then, in order to enjoy the convenience of the life her wealth brought, her wife would periodically give herself to her as they had agreed upon. That was what she considered “living off someone.”
But they were a legitimate married couple, and they were spending their shared property. There was no need for all that nonsense.
And that had nothing to do with this life.
Xiao Xue was paying her to work. She didn’t ask her to sleep with her, nor did she use her position to force her to do anything. What kind of arrangement was that?
At most, Xiao Xue was just a kind person who couldn’t bear to see her on the streets.
Despite her envy, Fang Dan was also a little happy.
She was just living her life, and if she fell, then so be it.
But when she saw someone rise from the mud and bloom into a vibrant flower, it made her happy too.
Hearing Yue Lei defend her employer so much, Fang Dan didn’t say anything else.
She just buckled her seatbelt: “I’m still living at that youth hostel. Be careful. A person can’t be this good to another person for no reason.”
“I know,” Yue Lei said with a shameless smile.
She actually felt that this life was great. There was no pressure from the constantly changing business world, and she didn’t have to worry about going bankrupt.
Just being a harmless little house mouse living in Mo Yingxue’s house was a pretty good feeling too.
She started the car and gestured to Fang Dan with her chin: “What about you? Why are you still living in a youth hostel? That environment is neither stable nor safe.”
“I…”
Fang Dan subconsciously wanted to argue. She wanted to say that she was also very happy living day to day without a care in the world.
But when she caught a glimpse of Yue Lei’s vibrant face, what she said changed: “I’ve been too busy lately. I’m a model at school during the week and I’m at various comic conventions on the weekends. My family stuff, plus the falling out with my former roommate…
My rent, deposit, and a lot of my stuff were all held by her. I don’t have the time or the money to find a place to live right now.”
Yue Lei then remembered the terms of renting a house, which usually required paying a security deposit and three months’ rent in advance.
If Mo Yingxue hadn’t “adopted” her, she probably wouldn’t have any other choice and would still be roommates with Fang Dan at the youth hostel.
“If you want to move, I can lend you some money. My employer paid me in advance, and she provides food and lodging, so I don’t have to spend much.”
Yue Lei looked her up and down: “But we’re not that close. I can’t just lend you money. You have to mortgage your camera to me until you pay me back.”
“No way! I have to take orders on weekends!” The photographer instinctively hugged her precious camera.
She was so worried about her camera being stolen in the crowded and messy youth hostel that she carried it with her when she went out and even hid it under her blanket when she slept.
Yue Lei didn’t think that was a problem: “Just think about it. I’ll bring it to you when you need to use it. You can look for a house in your free time.
When you find a good place, bring me the camera, and I’ll lend you the money. I won’t charge any interest as long as you pay me back within three months. This is to repay you for introducing me to that job.”
At this point, Fang Dan no longer had the mood to enjoy the Porsche. She held her camera and thought the whole way.
Yue Lei didn’t force her to make a decision immediately. She rolled down the window, waved, and said: “Let me know when you’ve decided. Send me the raw photos when you get back, and remember to send me the edited ones after you finish.”
The commission from Sakura was finally completed.
Yue Lei felt a sense of relief. She hummed a song as she drove back, letting the cool moonlight gradually lengthen her shadow.
When she got home, she saw the lights on in the living room. Yue Lei’s heart skipped a beat, and her carefree happiness came to an abrupt halt.
It was almost two in the morning. Was her wife still not asleep?
