- Chapter 11 - The Unexpected Assistant
“Together?”
The hotel used by the crew was strictly for actors, directors, and their personal assistants. How could they possibly allow an unrelated person to move in?
“I can be your temporary life assistant,” Song Qingxue promised solemnly. “I can take care of your laundry, meals, and daily routine. I’ll definitely make sure you’re satisfied, Sister.”
Ji Yaran hadn’t expected Song Qingxue to be this serious, let alone this persistent.
To follow her, the girl was even willing to work as a life assistant. One should know that being a celebrity’s assistant is grueling work, doing laundry, folding quilts, serving tea, and handling every imaginable domestic chore.
Ji Yaran sighed inwardly. “Qingxue, do you really want to go with me that badly?”
She knew that Omegas were generally clingy and prone to developing dependencies, but work was work, not a game. Even if Song Qingxue said all that, how could she agree so easily?
“Sister, I just want to be with you,” Song Qingxue said, lowering her eyes. Her fingers unconsciously gripped the hem of her shirt, and her voice sounded heartbreakingly pitiful. “Everyone else has abandoned me. You’re the only one willing to take me in. If you leave me behind too, I really won’t know what to do.”
“What are you saying?” Ji Yaran said helplessly. “I’m just going to film a movie, I’m not abandoning you. We can still see each other, can’t we?”
“But you’re only giving me a one-month chance,” Song Qingxue bit her lip, looking even more aggrieved. “I won’t get to see you much at all…”
“That month is just for pretending to be my girlfriend. Even setting that aside, we can still be friends. Besides, who brings their girlfriend to a film set?”
“Then just think of me as your assistant,” Song Qingxue insisted, appearing exceptionally stubborn about this. “I won’t cross the line. Do you not trust me, Sister?”
“It’s not about trust,” Ji Yaran stepped forward, placing her hands seriously on the girl’s shoulders. “In short, this isn’t happening. Stay here and live comfortably. I’ll come to visit you when I have time.”
“Sister” Tears instantly welled up in Song Qingxue’s eyes, making her look like a tiny, abandoned fox. “Is it really not possible?”
“There now, don’t be so sad,” Ji Yaran said, surprised by the intensity of the reaction. She comforted her gently. “It’s only a temporary separation. We’ll see each other again soon.”
She thought for a moment, then took out her phone and waved it in front of Song Qingxue. “Message me if anything happens. You can even call me at night.”
Song Qingxue fluttered her lashes, reached up to wipe away a tear, and forced a strained smile. “Then… I’ll be good and listen to you.”
Despite Song Qingxue’s promise not to follow, the atmosphere between the two became somewhat stiff from that day on. Whenever Song Qingxue looked at her, her eyes were teary as if she had much to say, yet she never spoke, going about her chores in silence.
She might have been silent, but her hands were incredibly busy. Washing dishes, sweeping floors, cooking… she handled everything perfectly. She was attentive to the absolute extreme.
Ji Yaran understood Song Qingxue’s motives well enough. The girl likely wanted to prove she had the capability to be a good assistant so that Ji Yaran would change her mind.
Unfortunately, Ji Yaran’s mind was made up. No matter what Song Qingxue did, she remained firm in her original decision.
Before long, the opening day for Embrace When the Snow Falls arrived.
Ji Yaran took a taxi to the crew’s hotel the night before. Just as she was pulling her suitcase out of the trunk after getting off, she noticed a black luxury car already parked in front of the hotel entrance.
Who is this?
With a crisp “click,” a slender, delicate hand pushed the car door open. A tall, gorgeous woman stepped out. Her tight, red off-the-shoulder dress outlined her sexy curves, and her waterfall of curly black hair reached down to her waist. She was as eye-catching as a red rose blooming in the dark of night.
The woman’s appearance was seductive and mature, her aura powerful but not easily approachable. She maintained a cold attitude that created a strong sense of distance, even when speaking to her own assistants.
After getting out of the car, she removed her sunglasses and slightly raised her hand. An assistant carrying her bags immediately stepped forward to drape a black suit jacket over her shoulders to block the wind.
Then, flanked by bodyguards, she entered the hotel without a sideways glance.
In this production, only the female lead, Tang Rui, could afford such a grand entrance.
She was a top-tier A-list starlet, possessing both superb acting skills and breathtaking beauty. Her popularity was in a league of its own among actresses her age. When she first debuted, she starred in a “dual-female lead” drama with Xu Zhi. Both skyrocketed to fame afterward, one becoming a top idol and the other a Double Crown Best Actress. Their fanbases had been at each other’s throats ever since, and rumors of their mutual dislike frequently circulated in the industry.
It was strange, though.
If the rumors were true, why would Xu Zhi invest in Embrace When the Snow Falls and personally participate in the casting?
If the rumors were false, why did they stop working together immediately after that project ended and never interact again?
Could there be some unknown, complex entanglement between the two?
Ji Yaran suddenly recalled her recent audition. After her performance, Xu Zhi had specifically asked her to perform a scene with the female lead, Shu Tong—and it was the exact scene where the villain frames her. Was that a coincidence, or was there an ulterior motive?
As Ji Yaran was pondering this, someone gently tugged at her sleeve.
Her innate alertness caused her expression to sharpen instantly, but a timid voice sounded in her ear.
“Sister.”
Ji Yaran froze. The moment she heard that voice, her tensed muscles instinctively relaxed.
She whipped her head around to see Song Qingxue clutching her sleeve. The girl was wearing a large backpack that made her already thin frame look even smaller and more pitiable.
“Why are you here?” Ji Yaran hadn’t expected Song Qingxue to be so bold as to follow her all the way here.
“I couldn’t bear to be away from you, I wanted to see you…” Song Qingxue bit her lip, her voice dropping lower as her confidence wavered.
“See me?” Ji Yaran’s gaze fell on the backpack. “If you’re just here to see me, do you really need such a large bag?”
“Don’t be angry, Sister,” Song Qingxue said guiltily, lowering her head and whispering. “I didn’t want to cause trouble… I was just worried there would be no one to take care of you here, I wasn’t at ease…”
“You…” Ji Yaran’s brow furrowed, but in the end, she couldn’t bring herself to say anything harsh. Facing this Omega, it was truly difficult to be stern.
She knew Song Qingxue just wanted to be near her, and she didn’t actually hate the idea of having her around. However, there were bound to be stranger Alphas in the hotel. If Song Qingxue ran into them and something happened, the consequences would be unthinkable.
“Sister, are you going to send me away?” Song Qingxue knew she was being willful and feared Ji Yaran’s anger.
“I…” Ji Yaran started, then stopped.
Send her back? If she wanted to, she could blow up at her right now and ensure she went home.
But… did she really want to do that?
While she was indecisive, a woman’s mocking voice came from behind: “Oh? Isn’t this Director Yu’s abandoned little lover? Why are you standing at the door alone instead of going in? Don’t tell me you saw Tang Rui and felt so inferior that you’re afraid to enter?”
Xiao Rongrong had arrived long ago. Encountering Ji Yaran downstairs was no accident at all.
Having been in the industry for years and accumulated many works, she was playing the third-tier antagonist in this drama a rank lower than Ji Yaran, whom she considered a talentless “vase.” She was naturally bitter and had been looking for a chance to vent.
Ji Yaran struck back with a smile: “Miss Xiao, if your eyesight is so poor that you can’t see I’m talking to someone, you should go to the hospital before it closes to get your eyes checked.”
Xiao Rongrong was slightly surprised, only then noticing the person beside Ji Yaran. The thin, delicate appearance clearly marked her as an Omega.
Xiao Rongrong was an Alpha and had always felt superior about her gender. She didn’t even respect a Beta like Ji Yaran, let alone an Omega.
A contemptuous smile spread across her lips as she mocked them heartlessly: “I haven’t seen you for a few days, and suddenly there’s an Omega by your side. Don’t tell me you used Director Yu’s money to keep a little lover?”
“I’m not her kept lover,” Song Qingxue explained, looking a bit angry. “I’m her…”
“She is my assistant,” Ji Yaran suddenly cut in, leaving both Song Qingxue and Xiao Rongrong dazed.
“Assistant?” Xiao Rongrong repeated, as if she had heard a hilarious joke. “Ji Yaran, you have an assistant? Don’t tell me you just picked up some woman off the street and called her an assistant.”
To be fair, Xiao Rongrong wasn’t actually wrong. Song Qingxue was someone Ji Yaran had picked up.
They had ended up together by a series of accidents. Moving into her home, becoming a fake girlfriend… and now, following her to the hotel. She was like a piece of taffy that wouldn’t let go.
“This is my new assistant, please show some respect,” Ji Yaran said with a smile. “As for you, Sister Xiao, I heard you need at least four assistants whenever you join a set. If you truly find it that difficult to take care of yourself, I suggest you go to the hospital for a check-up. Forcing yourself to film will only hurt yourself and others.”
“You… Ji Yaran, what are you talking about!” Xiao Rongrong glared at her, her face turning white with rage. “Just because you hired a new assistant, you think you can act all high and mighty on set?”
The leads of this drama were Tang Rui and Xu Zhi, and Xu Zhi was an artist from her own company. Where did Ji Yaran get the nerve to act out?
The word in the industry was that Ji Yaran had been dumped by Yu Shi and her resources had plummeted. She must have used some underhanded means to contact the crew of Embrace When the Snow Falls and gotten the role of Min Qing through the back door.
However, Zhao Qingyan was known to hate talentless actors who relied on connections, especially people like Ji Yaran. Now that Ji Yaran lacked Yu Shi’s backing, Xiao Rongrong didn’t believe she would have a comfortable time on this set.
Thinking it through, Xiao Rongrong decided not to bicker further. “Whatever, why should I lower myself to your level? In this crew, acting skill is everything. People who don’t know their own worth will only end up as a laughingstock.”
Xiao Rongrong ignored them both, brushed past Ji Yaran, and entered the hotel.
Only after Xiao Rongrong’s figure disappeared did Ji Yaran turn back to Song Qingxue.
Song Qingxue looked like a child who had done something wrong, her thin frame looking particularly forlorn under the streetlights.
“Forget it,” Ji Yaran sighed. “You can stay.”
Song Qingxue’s body froze. After a long moment, she looked up in disbelief, her bright eyes reflecting the high moon.
She asked uncertainly, “Sister, do you mean?”
“Just act as my life assistant. I actually do need someone anyway.” If for nothing else, with people like Xiao Rongrong around, it was better to have an assistant by her side.
“Sister, is it true?” Song Qingxue was ecstatic. “I can really stay?”
“Yes,” Ji Yaran reached out and patted her hair. “Stay and help me. You’ll live with me.”
“Thank you, Sister!” Song Qingxue wiped away her tears with the back of her hand, a smile finally appearing on her face. “I will definitely take good care of you.”
Ji Yaran couldn’t help but laugh. “I don’t expect you to take care of me. It’s enough if you can take care of yourself.”
She glanced toward the hotel, then back at Song Qingxue’s backpack. “Did you bring clothes?”
Song Qingxue’s cheeks turned red. “I only brought some of them…”
“It’s okay. If you run out, you can wear mine for a while,” Ji Yaran reached out. “This bag looks heavy, let me carry it for you.”
Unexpectedly, Song Qingxue stepped back, declining politely. “No need, Sister. I said I was going to take care of you. I can carry my own things.”
Since she insisted, Ji Yaran didn’t press further. “Alright then, let’s head up together.”
Ji Yaran’s room was number 307.
The hotel rooms were standardized with two beds, so Song Qingxue could easily take one.
As Ji Yaran opened her suitcase, she noticed Song Qingxue unpacking her own things. Catching a glimpse out of the corner of her eye, she was surprised to see that Song Qingxue had brought… almost entirely Ji Yaran’s daily necessities.
“Why… did you bring all my stuff?” Ji Yaran walked over and leafed through the items. They were indeed things she had left back at the apartment.
“Because,” Song Qingxue’s breath was light, as if she were afraid of exposing her frantic heartbeat, “I was afraid you would send me away.”
