- Chapter 9 - The Truth
“No, Ranran is at home doing her homework right now. She’s being very good and obedient.”
“That’s good, that’s good. I was just worried she might be giving you trouble.”
As Father Yun laughed, his expression gradually turned despondent. Yun Su didn’t even need to guess what was on his father’s mind he was thinking of Lu Chen. After all, having raised someone for eighteen years, how could there not be any feelings? To put it bluntly, even if you raised a dog for eighteen years, you would develop a bond. Yet, that entire Lu family was worse than dogs. At the very least, a dog knows how to be grateful, whereas Lu Chen was a venomous snake that bit the hand that fed it. As for the insults and harm the Lu family had inflicted upon the original body, he would reclaim everything, piece by piece.
“Alright, Father, let’s not talk about such unhappy things. Eat first. This was made by the head chef at Hai Tian Ya Mansion; I don’t even know what it tastes like!” Yun Su placed the chopsticks into his father’s hand and urged, “Father, hurry and try it. If it’s good, I’ll take Ranran to eat there next time.”
Father Yun was startled. “Hai Tian Ya Mansion? I heard some workers at the construction site say that’s a five-star restaurant in Canglan City. It’s not a place just anyone can afford; a single meal costs tens of thousands of yuan. Where did you get the money?”
“Don’t worry, Father. Your son hasn’t done anything illegal. This was compensation given to me by someone else.” Yun Su took out a small bowl, ladled some fish soup into it, and handed it to his father.
Father Yun: “Compensation?”
“Yes.”
Yun Su briefly explained what had happened at the hospital, naturally omitting the part where he had taken action himself. Seeing that his son hadn’t done anything illegal, Father Yun didn’t press further.
Once his father finished eating and Yun Su had tidied everything up, he took an “amulet for peace” out of his pocket the one he had drawn alongside Yun Ran’s. It also contained a wisp of Nanming Li Fire, intended to protect his father.
“Father, this is a peace charm I specifically went to a temple to pray for. It’s to keep you safe. You must keep it on your person at all times.”
Father Yun looked at the white paper charm in his hand; it looked nothing like something one would get from a temple it looked more like a triangle folded from a random page of a notebook. “Is a peace charm from a temple supposed to be white? I’ve never heard of that.”
Yun Su: “…”
“Don’t worry about that, Father. You just need to remember that this charm must never leave your side,” Yun Su said, pushing up his glasses and avoiding his father’s gaze.
Seeing him act this way, Father Yun didn’t ask further, simply promising to comply. “Alright, alright, I will definitely keep it with me.”
Whether or not the charm was useful didn’t matter; it was his child’s heartfelt intention, and he naturally wouldn’t brush aside his son’s filial piety. Seeing his father agree, Yun Su finally let out a breath. After all, his father wasn’t like Yun Ran; he wasn’t as easy to fool.
“Then, Father, you should get some rest. I’ll come to see you again tomorrow.”
Father Yun nodded with a smile. “Go on back! You have classes tomorrow on Tuesday.”
“Okay.”
Reaching the doorway, Yun Su suddenly stopped. Without turning back, he said casually, “Father, I’m planning on changing my name.”
Father Yun was stunned. He couldn’t grasp why his son would suddenly want to change his name; he had never mentioned it before. “Do your adoptive parents know about this?”
Father Yun still didn’t know that Yun Su had been expelled from the Lu family, and his first thought was whether the Lu couple would be upset.
“They don’t need to know. My surname is Yun, not Lu.”
Father Yun frowned, asking worriedly, “Are you having an argument with your adoptive parents?” He continued, “You child, what conflict between parents and children can’t be resolved? In a couple of days, when your adoptive parents’ anger has cooled down, you should go home and apologize. The matter will pass; there’s no need to change your name.”
Father Yun’s hands, hidden beneath the quilt, gripped tightly. He forced down the soreness in his heart. He was a cripple now, needing help for everything; he couldn’t provide Yun Su with any assistance and would only drag him down. Rather than this, it would be better for both children to stay in the Lu family, surely such a wealthy household wouldn’t begrudge two children a meal. Although Lu Chen was their biological son, Yun Su had been raised by the Lu family as their own for eighteen years; surely they had feelings for him and wouldn’t kick him out just because their biological child had returned. Judging others by his own standards, he couldn’t imagine anyone being so cold-blooded.
“Father, the Lu family has already released the news that I am an imposter, and they have publicly announced that I, Lu Yun, am no longer a member of their family. Lu Chen is.” Yun Su turned to look at his father, his eyes filled with indignation on his father’s behalf. He had treated Lu Chen as his own son, but Lu Chen clearly hadn’t regarded him as his father.
He hadn’t intended to say it at this time he couldn’t bear to see his father suffer such a blow but to prevent Lu Chen from using Father Yun to do anything disadvantageous to him, he had to tell him the truth. Even if this truth was cruel and bloody, Father Yun had a right to know.
“Father, you must have guessed it. Lu Chen is Yun Chen. He has already become the young master of the Lu family; he is no longer a member of the Yun family.”
Father Yun’s face went white in an instant, his expression filled with indescribable loss and sorrow. “I-is this true?” He couldn’t believe it. The son he had raised for so many years had returned to his biological parents without a second thought just because he wasn’t his real father, not even feeling a shred of attachment to him. During his time in the hospital, he had been deceiving himself, telling himself that Lu Chen simply didn’t know he was injured. Now he understood: Lu Chen had returned to his biological parents’ home, enjoying the life of a wealthy young master how could he remember a father who was nothing but a construction site foreman?
Yun Su sighed inwardly, but he felt no softness. He pulled out his phone and played the recording of the Lu family’s press conference.
After watching it, Father Yun seemed to age ten years in a single moment. “I understand. If you want to change your name, then do it. I’m fine; I just need to rest.”
Looking at his father in this state, whether because Yun Su had been reborn into a young body or otherwise, he found it unbearable to tell him what came next. Yun Su turned away to avoid looking at his father’s expression. “Father, there is one more thing I must tell you.”
Father Yun reached up to secretly wipe the corners of his eyes, his voice rasping. “Say what you have to say. I can handle it.”
Yun Su pressed his lips together, finally steeling himself. “Father, your job at the construction site… it was Lu Chen who intentionally had people sabotage you to make you lose it, not because your supervisor disliked you. And your leg… it was Lu Chen who hired someone to break it because he felt our family had caused him to endure eighteen years of bitterness, living under others’ eyes.”
After speaking, Yun Su waited for his father’s reaction, but this time, Father Yun was strangely calm—he didn’t even make a sound. The ward fell into a silence so profound one could hear a pin drop.
After a long time, just when Yun Su thought his father had fallen asleep, Father Yun finally spoke.
“I was wondering why that supervisor, who had always been so kind to me, suddenly turned on me and fired me over such a small matter, and then had my leg broken… so it was all because of Lu Chen. My good son.” By the end, Father Yun’s voice was choked with sobs, and he began to struggle for air.
After a long while, Father Yun’s emotions finally settled. His eyes were bloodshot, and his voice was completely raspy. “I want to rest. You should go back first. Do whatever you want regarding the name change; I won’t offer any more opinions.”
With that, Father Yun struggled to lie down, turning his back to the door. Yun Su looked back once. “Father, there is a blood feud between Lu Chen and me. It is destined that only one of us will live. If I kill Lu Chen that day, I hope you won’t hate me.”
“Lu Chen feels the same toward me. Once the Lu family realizes they have no opportunity to attack me, they might target you and Ranran. That is why this peace charm must never leave your side.”
After finishing, Yun Su waited a moment. Seeing that his father had no intention of speaking, he left the ward.
At this moment, what his father needed most was time. No matter what, Lu Chen was a child he had poured eighteen years of effort into raising; he couldn’t be as ruthless as the Lu parents.
Before leaving the hospital, Yun Su transferred the three thousand yuan remaining on his card to the private nurse, asking him to take extra care of Father Yun. That was all he could do. He wasn’t the “real” Yun Su; he couldn’t bring himself to treat his father with the same affection a biological child would. Moreover, he was born of heaven and earth he had never had parents, so he knew nothing of how to handle intimate, blood-related relationships. Although the old man Qi Chen was half a master to him, their relationship was more like that of friends. He didn’t reject Father Yun, but he didn’t intend to get too close they were destined to be people from two different worlds.
