- Chapter 7 - Nanming Li Fire
Yun Su set down his keys, sat down beside Yun Ran, and patted her head. “Alright, alright, there won’t be a next time.”
Yun Ran blinked and looked up at her brother. “Brother, why do I feel like you’ve changed?”
The hand on her head paused momentarily. Yun Su asked, as if casually, “How have I changed?”
“Hmm… I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s just a feeling. You seem to have something to look forward to now, like the teachers always say, you’re full of vitality.” Yun Ran rested her chin on her hands, her fingers tapping her lips, looking at him with bright, shining eyes. “You used to be so listless that I sometimes worried you might just disappear one day.”
At the mention of this, Yun Ran’s mood dimmed. “Father is in the hospital, and that bad guy Lu Chen hasn’t visited him even once since he moved in with his wealthy father. Father was so good to him, and even though I told him specifically that Father was sick, that bad guy never showed up.”
Yun Ran could not understand it. Even if he wasn’t Father’s biological son, and even though he used to bully her when they were younger, Father had always treated him so well why wouldn’t he come to check on him?
Watching Yun Ran lower her head, tears welling up in her eyes, Yun Su sighed. The “Lu Chen” she spoke of was, of course, Lu Chen the very person who had ordered the attack to break their father’s legs. Why would he ever visit him?
Yun Su messily ruffled Yun Ran’s hair until it looked like a bird’s nest, which finally made her brighten up. “What’s the matter? Are you upset? Do you want me to send you to Lu Chen?”
“No! I don’t want to see that bad guy!” Yun Ran was too distracted by his teasing to be sad anymore. She grabbed his arm and glared at him with her large, watery eyes.
Yun Su pinched her chubby cheek and pushed her away. “You’re a child, stop worrying about things you don’t understand. Go do your homework.”
Hearing him call her a child, Yun Ran turned her head away and huffed indignantly. “I’m already ten, I’m not a child. I understand everything!”
Yun Su shrugged helplessly, rolling up his sleeves as he moved toward the kitchen. “Sure, sure the ‘big kid’ in the fifth grade, can you focus on your homework now?”
Seeing Yun Su head to the kitchen, Yun Ran didn’t press the issue. “What are we having for dinner?”
Over the past two days, Yun Su had integrated the memories of this body quite well. Although he had been a bit clumsy with the kitchen tools at first, he was already becoming quite proficient. “It’s too late now; let’s have tomato and egg noodles. I’ll make you something better tomorrow.”
“Okay!” Satisfied with the answer, Yun Ran obediently leaned over the coffee table to continue her homework.
Yun Su glanced at her, pushed up his glasses, and a faint smile touched his lips. The little girl is easy to look after.
He boiled a pot of water, washed three tomatoes, and made a cross-shaped cut on each before pouring the boiling water over them. The thin skins soon curled away. He peeled and diced the tomatoes, then set them aside. He heated a pan, scrambled four eggs, and plated them. After sauteing some aromatics, he added the tomatoes. Once they were softened and juicy, he returned the eggs to the pan, added water, and brought it to a boil before dropping in the noodles.
A few minutes later, a steaming bowl of tomato and egg noodles was ready. Yun Su filled a thermal lunchbox for their father, then carried the remaining bowl out to the living room. He washed his hands, grabbed his jacket, and instructed Yun Ran, “I’m going to the hospital to bring Father his dinner. Eat yours, and leave the dishes in the kitchen; I’ll clean them when I get back.”
Yun Ran slurped her noodles, her eyes sparkling. She nodded vaguely, her mouth full. Strange! Why does the food Brother makes today taste so much better? Unable to figure it out, she shook her head there was no use thinking about it when she was this hungry.
Yun Su hesitated. He was worried about leaving Yun Ran home alone so late, so his eyes scanned the room. His gaze fell on her notebook. He walked over, tore off a page, and used his finger to quickly draw a formation on the paper using spiritual energy.
A minute later, he infused the paper with a wisp of white flame, folded it into a small triangle, and tied it to a string. Given his current cultivation, he couldn’t craft anything overly powerful, especially without proper paper or cinnabar, but it was enough to contain a wisp of Nanming Li Fire.
Ever since birth, the Vermillion Bird clan was accompanied by a white flame their natal fire, the Nanming Li Fire. It could incinerate anything in the world; as long as a Vermillion Bird’s soul endured, the Nanming Li Fire would never be extinguished.
“This is an amulet. Don’t take it off, understand?” Yun Su hung the amulet around Yun Ran’s neck and instructed her sternly.
Yun Ran set down her chopsticks and tugged at the necklace. “Brother, if you’re going to lie to me, at least use a better excuse! The amulets on TV are always yellow, and since when did you learn how to do this stuff? I never heard about it.”
Yun Su flicked her forehead and picked up the thermal container. “Stop watching those mindless shows. I’m leaving.”
As long as no one attacked Yun Ran, the charm would act like a normal amulet. But if someone had no eyes and dared to strike her, that wisp of Nanming Li Fire would claim their life in an instant. Yun Su did this only as a precaution he hoped he was just overthinking things.
He hailed a taxi to the Canglan City People’s Hospital and arrived just before nine. Yun Su sighed their dinner had practically turned into a late-night snack.
He was walking down the corridor of the inpatient ward when the elevator chimed and opened. A figure rushed out in a panic, colliding with him and sending the thermal container flying.
Clang!
The container hit the floor, and soup splashed everywhere. Yun Su stood motionless, his head lowered, his handsome face dark and terrifying.
Lin Jiusi hadn’t expected to bump into someone and knock over their belongings. He quickly stopped, scratched his head, and apologized sheepishly. “Sorry, I’m so sorry! I wasn’t looking.”
After waiting a moment and seeing Yun Su still hadn’t looked up, Lin Jiusi asked tentatively, “A-are you okay?”
Sensing the cold aura radiating from Yun Su, Lin Jiusi’s voice began to tremble. Looking from the spilled container to Yun Su, he tried to salvage the situation. “Look, I’m really sorry. You must be here to visit a friend, right? I…”
Before he could finish, a fist the size of a sandbag slammed into his face.
“Are you blind? Can’t you watch where you’re going? Are you in such a hurry to reincarnate? Do you want me to give you a lift?” Yun Su grabbed Lin Jiusi by the collar, his eyes spitting fire. If this weren’t a society governed by law, he would have killed the boy right then and there.
“Are you f***ing crazy? I already—” The word “apologized” died in his throat, choked off by the murderous intent in Yun Su’s eyes.
Lin Jiusi grabbed Yun Su’s hand. “Don’t be impulsive! It’s just a meal, right? I’ll have someone send one over right now! Half an hour no, ten minutes! I’ll have it here in ten minutes!”
Under Yun Su’s murderous gaze, Lin Jiusi managed to shrink his timeline down to ten minutes.
“Ten minutes. If the food isn’t here by then, you won’t be leaving this hospital today.” Yun Su released him, smoothed out the wrinkles on his clothes with a smile, and whispered into his ear.
Lin Jiusi swallowed hard. “Why?”
Yun Su stepped back and pushed up his glasses, the lenses shimmering with a chilling, cold light. “Because you’ll be appearing in the emergency operating room.”
Lin Jiusi’s face turned pale with fright. He fumbled for his phone, dropped it, and scrambled to pick it up. “Y-you can count on it, I’ll have it sent over immediately!”
He made the call, ordering the head chef at the Hai Tian Ya Mansion to prepare several patient-friendly dishes and deliver them within ten minutes. After hanging up, Lin Jiusi glanced at Yun Su out of the corner of his eye. He didn’t dare leave, so he squatted in the corner and messaged his brother to cry for help.
Lin Jiusi: Brother, help!
A few minutes later, his phone buzzed. Lin Jiusi clicked it open. His brother, listed as “Brother” with a contact icon simply labeled “Jiang,” had replied with a single question mark.
Lin Jiusi typed frantically, detailing the encounter and emphasizing how terrifying and violent Yun Su had been.
Another few minutes passed before the other side replied: “Wait there.”
