Chapter 19: A Gentle Gaze, as if Looking at Himself…
Winter always arrived early in Yunjing. Wu Yi, who had always been terrified of the cold, had long since bundled up in a light down jacket. Ordinarily, he would have preferred to stay indoors, but because of his promise to Qing Zhu to keep an eye on Qin Yifan, he spent the following days frequently running back and forth to the university—all, unfortunately, to no avail.
Finally losing his patience, he found an opportunity to corner Qin Yifan’s number-one lackey, Wang Hao. Although Wu Yi didn’t know exactly what had happened at Xuanwei Restaurant that day, Wang Hao had shown visible trepidation every time he saw him lately, his former arrogance completely extinguished.
When caught and asked about Qin Yifan’s whereabouts, Wang Hao hesitated for a long while before finally confessing honestly.
“Brother Qin seems to be sick. He’s often like this, anyway—he just doesn’t want to come to school. He’s probably out playing somewhere right now.”
Wu Yi pouted. While that certainly fit Qin Yifan’s personality, if Qing Zhu said he was “sick,” then he definitely wasn’t healthy. He was likely recuperating.
With Fu Liuye’s birthday approaching and having received many gifts from him recently, Wu Yi began visiting the Fu residence more frequently.
Arriving at the Fu house after class today, he happened to walk in on Cen Yue and Fu Liuye discussing this year’s birthday celebration. They planned to hold two events; given their status, every banquet was a prime opportunity for networking and building partnerships.
“Xiao Yi, you must come too. We’ll have a family lunch at home—we’ll invite Mr. Qing as well. The evening event will be larger. Are there any singers or actors you like? Auntie can invite them to perform for you.”
Wu Yi thought for a moment and said, “I don’t really follow celebrities.”
“An orchestra performance then?” Cen Yue looked at him affectionately. “Auntie quite enjoys concerts. Have you ever been to one, Xiao Yi?”
“Hmm, I’ve only heard performances at school.”
“Then listen this time. You might find you like it.”
“Okay.”
Wu Yi thought about the gift he had hidden at home, planning to bring it that day.
Fu Liuye’s birthday arrived as scheduled. Having no other commitments, Wu Yi went to the shop early that morning to make the cake. Since they were providing all the desserts for the banquet, the shop was closed to walk-in customers that day.
The staff members, motivated by their event bonuses, were exceptionally energetic.
Once the cake was mostly decorated, Wu Yi clapped his hands. “That’s about it. We’ll add the final decorations after it’s delivered, or it’ll be too tall to transport.”
“Got it. I’ll escort it personally,” Wen Ya said with a laugh.
Wu Yi let out a yawn, lazily changed his clothes, and left the dessert shop to head to the Fu house for lunch.
Inside the courtyard, once it was clear no one else was around, Qing Zhu manifested into his blurred human form and walked behind Wu Yi. He was tall, surrounded by a shroud of black mist.
“You’re blocking all the sunlight. It’s so cold,” Wu Yi grumbled, finding things to complain about.
Qing Zhu ignored him but thinned his shadow slightly, allowing the weak sunlight to fall on Wu Yi. Under the light, Qing Zhu’s body looked like a flickering phantom, growing indistinct.
“If we could find your body, you could go with us tonight. It’s all your fault for being so slow. We can’t find Qin Yifan lately either, it’s so annoying… What if something happens to him? Would your body be at his house?”
Qing Zhu finally couldn’t help but ask, “What is wrong with you lately?”
Wu Yi didn’t even turn his head. “What’s wrong with me?”
“You know perfectly well.”
For the past two days, Wu Yi had been speaking with constant sarcasm. He was polite to everyone else, but he wouldn’t give Qing Zhu a single kind look, constantly nagging about finding his body and memories as if he couldn’t wait for him to leave.
Wu Yi snorted and ignored him. He changed his shoes and strode into the main hall, shouting to no one in particular, “Auntie Cen! Qing Zhu says I’ve been acting weird lately!”
Cen Yue coughed lightly. Naturally, she didn’t dare speak ill of Mr. Qing, so she only smiled and said, “How are you weird?”
“He bullies me every day.”
Wu Yi lowered his eyes, looking the picture of aggrieved piteousness.
Cen Yue couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. Seeing that Qing Zhu had already sat on the sofa and resumed flipping through the old, curled diaries, she sighed and spoke up, bracing herself.
“Mr. Qing, are you two having a spat?”
Qing Zhu let out a cold snort, his attitude clearly disdainful. “His rebellious phase isn’t over yet.”
Hearing this, Wu Yi felt even angrier.
Cen Yue, watching them bicker, wasn’t worried at all; in fact, she wanted to laugh. Normally, Mr. Qing was aloof and otherworldly, but in front of Xiao Yi, he showed a more relaxed side, clearly teasing him on purpose. While she found it novel and amusing, a passage from Lao Fu’s diary flickered through her mind:
The Gentleman speaks very little. He likes to watch the leaves wither outside the courtyard during heavy rain. Sometimes we speak to him and he doesn’t respond; he is cold to everyone. Sometimes he seems to have no attachment to anything in this world, as if he is weary of these long days. Our lives were given infinite possibilities because of him, but they are inevitably accompanied by a countdown. None of us have ever asked about the Gentleman’s lifespan. Perhaps we are not the first group to stand by his side. Sometimes I think… he must feel lonely too…
Now that he had Xiao Yi by his side for a time, Mr. Qing probably wasn’t so lonely anymore.
…
In the evening, after seeing Wen Ya’s video report that the cake and desserts had been successfully delivered to the hotel, Wu Yi let out a sigh of relief. He put down his phone and turned to the full-length mirror to adjust his clothes.
“I like this outfit.”
It was a custom piece Fu Liuye had made for him: a silk shirt and trousers, with a water-blue jacket adorned with diamond tassels that fell from the shoulders like flowing water. It was dazzling and beautiful. On anyone else, it might have looked too flashy, but on Wu Yi, it perfectly complemented his beauty. His usually smooth hair had been styled by Cen Yue’s hair stylist into soft, fluffy curls, adding a touch of ethereal charm.
Qing Zhu sat on the sofa of the hotel suite, watching him show off for a long time without offering any opinion.
“These earrings are pretty too.” Wu Yi leaned closer to the mirror, fiddling with the beautiful gemstones.
The suite door opened, and the fatigue on Cen Yue’s face vanished the moment she saw him. She laughed, “So beautiful. It’s time for us to head down.”
“Okay.”
Wu Yi smoothed his hair and looked smugly at Qing Zhu. “I’m going now. You can stay here and watch by yourself.”
Qing Zhu kept his eyes on the diary he carried and hummed without looking up.
“Let’s go.”
Wu Yi seemed angry again as he nudged Cen Yue’s shoulder to leave with her. Cen Yue hooked his arm, and after the door closed, she couldn’t help but smile. From the moment she entered until they left, Mr. Qing hadn’t turned a single page. Although he pretended to be indifferent, he had been listening intently to Wu Yi.
There were many guests downstairs, all prominent figures in Yunjing. Cen Yue had been a bit worried as they descended, but seeing that Wu Yi wasn’t at all stage-frightened—in fact, looking quite spirited as he scanned the crowd—her heart eased. This child truly wasn’t shy.
Seeing Cen Yue lead a magnificently dressed, unfamiliar youth downstairs, the guests’ expressions became subtle. Everyone seemed to realize exactly who had received the jewelry President Fu had spent a fortune on at auctions recently.
“Who is that? Could it be someone President Fu is keeping…?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. Not at an event like this.”
After the brief speeches ended, the ballroom filled with melodious, relaxing music. Knowing Wu Yi didn’t like small talk with strangers, Cen Yue simply introduced him to her friends.
“He is Liuye’s younger brother, a friend’s child.”
“I see. He’s truly beautiful. No wonder you haven’t been out shopping lately; you’ve been busy dressing up your ‘doll,’ haven’t you?”
While Cen Yue chatted, Wu Yi turned and found Wen Ya, who had changed clothes and was taking photos nearby.
“Take a picture of me? I want to post it on my account.”
Wen Ya naturally agreed, skillfully including the massive dessert table and the orchestra on the stage in the background. Wu Yi took the phone back, very satisfied. He added a filter, wrote a caption, and posted it.
Celebrating my brother’s birthday today. The cake is delicious.
After waiting a while and receiving only a few likes, he was starting to feel discouraged when his shoulder was lightly tapped.
“Xiao Yi, what are you posting?” It was Fu Liuye. He was wearing a custom tuxedo, styled to look even more commanding and exceptionally handsome.
“Updating my social media.” Wu Yi looked a bit troubled. “But not many people are liking it. Is it because my post isn’t pretty?”
The photos he took while shopping a few days ago also had no views; the only two comments questioned if he was a personal shopper selling fakes. How did he look like a personal shopper?!
Fu Liuye, listening to his complaints, quickly said, “It’s fine. It might just be that the traffic hasn’t hit yet. Check back later. Want something to eat?”
“I’m not hungry.” Wu Yi thought he had a point and closed his phone.
Fu Liuye didn’t push him, saying, “We’ll be cutting the cake soon. Remember to come get a piece; I’ll give you the very top part.”
“Okay.”
Wu Yi knew the birthday host was the busiest on such days, so he didn’t waste his time and hurried him back to his duties.
Wandering through the hall, many people recognized him as the one who came down with Cen Yue and greeted him warmly, their words filled with curiosity and probing questions. Wu Yi didn’t want to talk to them, so he sat near the stage to watch people dance to the music.
Gradually, however, his mind went blank, and his attention was drawn to the members of the orchestra on stage. They wore exquisite attire, and their instruments seemed to merge with them. It was completely different from the school performances he’d heard—unexpectedly pleasing, it effortlessly captured all his focus.
His gaze swept over them inch by inch, finally landing on the violinist at the edge. It was a tall, elegant young man with light brown, shoulder-length hair. There was a hint of mixed heritage in his features, but his expression while playing was incredibly focused and gentle, as if he weren’t holding a violin, but his own lover.
In a daze, Wu Yi seemed to feel a strong sense of resonance.
As the piece ended, the audience applauded. All eyes were on the guests who had finished dancing, and Wu Yi clapped along, his eyes unblinking as he stared at the orchestra.
The violinist adjusted his posture, and before starting the next piece, his eyes suddenly met Wu Yi’s. After a two-second pause, he offered a warm smile.
Wu Yi’s eyes widened slightly. His hands were still together, and he had only stared at the handsome man for a couple of seconds before he felt a subtle chill on his wrist.
