Chapter 18: I Didn’t Hit Him, You Know
Wuyi didn’t even spare them a glance, simply repeating: “I want this one. Wrap it up for me.”
“Mr. Qin…” The salesclerk looked at Qin Yifan, a troubled expression on her face.
Wuyi remained with his head lowered, admiring the beautiful gemstone on the cufflink. When he heard no movement for a long time, he impatiently lifted his eyelids and looked over. “What? Didn’t I get here first?”
“What’s going on? Someone’s trying to snatch it?” The woman behind Qin Yifan heard the commotion and walked over. She scanned the cufflinks Wuyi was holding.
The clerk said awkwardly, “This is a limited edition, and we only have one set in stock. But this guest did arrive first. Mr. Qin, when did you place a reservation?”
“What? Are you implying I’m lying to you?”
Qin Yifan hadn’t expected to run into Wuyi here today. Seeing him turning those cufflinks over and over in his hands made his blood boil. Since being lectured by Fu Liuye the other day, someone had leaked word of the incident to his grandfather. He had been grounded at home, and all his cards had been frozen.
He had only managed to sneak out for a breath of fresh air by tagging along with his sister’s shopping trip. Who would have thought the world was so small? Seeing Wuyi here, holding the very cufflinks he had wanted for a long time, the fire he had barely suppressed flared up again.
Wuyi curled his lip. “You didn’t reserve them, did you? You’re intentionally trying to take them from me. You’re a grown man—how can you be so childish?”
“Alright, it’s just a pair of accessories. Don’t you have plenty at home? Do you have to have these?” Qin Sijin said impatiently to her brother, then turned to Wuyi. “Young man, my brother really likes these. If you’re willing to part with them, you can pick something else, and we’ll pay for it as a gift to you, alright?”
“No.”
Qin Sijin froze, surprised by his blunt refusal.
“I got here first, and I saw them first. Why should I give them to you?” Wuyi scrutinized the cufflinks once more, growing more satisfied the more he looked. He pushed them toward the clerk. “Wrap these up for me. Also, the wallet from earlier—pack them nicely, they’re gifts.”
The clerk looked hesitantly at the Qin siblings.
Qin Yifan took a step forward, glaring coldly at Wuyi. “I said I saw them first. Besides, I’m a VIC (Very Important Client) here. I have priority.”
“Oh, so do I.” Wuyi didn’t blink, giving them Cen Yue’s name.
Qin Sijin’s expression shifted when she heard the name; she immediately weighed the situation in her mind.
“Certainly. Please come this way to pay. I will package them for you.”
Wuyi went to pay happily, even throwing a provocative glance at the fuming Qin Yifan.
“Quite the backbone today,” Qing Zhu suddenly chuckled.
Wuyi immediately resumed his “arrogant young master” persona, saying primly, “After all, my current character is a young master of a wealthy family. How can I allow myself to be bullied?”
He was really getting into the role.
Seeing him about to leave, Qin Yifan couldn’t take it. “Sister, I want those!”
Qin Sijin had a headache. Seeing her brother looking haggard after being stuck at home for days, she felt bad for him and continued to negotiate politely with Wuyi. “Friend, my brother really likes these. If possible…”
“No. I’ve said it several times now.” Cornered by them, Wuyi lost his patience. “What is this? Are you trying to rob me?”
Qin Sijin’s temper flared at his words. “I am speaking to you civilly, am I not?”
“And I said, no!” Wuyi’s face went cold, a rare occurrence. Once the clerk brought the packaged items out, he grabbed them to leave.
“Sister, you’re just letting him walk away like that?” Qin Yifan’s eyes were bloodshot. Ignoring his sister’s explanation, he couldn’t stop himself from chasing after Wuyi.
“Is he ever going to stop?” Wuyi felt a massive headache coming on, wondering why he had attracted such a nuisance.
Qing Zhu simply told him to walk away. Wuyi didn’t want to deal with the lunatic Qin Yifan anymore, so he ditched the escalator and ran straight for the elevator. However, just as he stepped inside, a hand blocked the closing doors.
The doors slid back open, revealing Qin Yifan’s dark, ugly expression. Wuyi puffed out his cheeks, displeased.
“Is he going to hit me?”
Qing Zhu: “…”
A rare sense of crisis rose in Wuyi’s heart. But just as Qin Yifan opened his mouth to speak, he suddenly froze. Two streams of nosebleed slowly began to trickle down his face. Wuyi was stunned.
Qin Yifan reacted quickly, covering his nose. He looked humiliated, his entire face turning bright red. He seemed to want to say something, but couldn’t get the words out.
“Are you okay?” For some reason, Wuyi felt his reaction was strange.
“None of your business!” Qin Yifan glared at him, frantically fumbling for tissues in his pocket. A rushed Qin Sijin caught up and gasped.
“Yifan! What happened?” She quickly found tissues in her bag to cover his nose, then crushed a medical ice pack and placed it on the bridge of his nose.
Wuyi watched the scene, dumbfounded. “He’s certainly… well-equipped.”
Noticing Qin Sijin looking over, he instinctively explained, “I didn’t hit him, you know. He just started bleeding out of nowhere.”
“I know. It’s a chronic issue. He bleeds easily when he gets agitated.” Qin Sijin’s tone was helpless, her face full of worry.
“Then…” Can I leave now? He wasn’t sure if he should say goodbye or just go.
Fortunately, Qin Sijin remembered him in her panic. “You go ahead. I’m truly sorry about today; we must have scared you.”
“It’s fine.”
While Wuyi was still hesitating, the elevator doors closed automatically. The Qin siblings disappeared from his sight. He let out a long breath of relief.
“Scared me to death. I thought he was trying to frame me.”
“You’re actually afraid of that?” Qing Zhu gave a light laugh, then paused. “Keep an eye on Qin Yifan.”
“Huh?” Wuyi thought he had misheard. “Are you saying he has ‘mental energy’ (nianli)?”
“Yes.”
Is he kidding? Wasn’t the bullied Xie Jingchuan pitiful enough? Qin Yifan, the leader of the bullies, was actually the one “requesting help” now? Wuyi had encountered this before; a few years ago when Qing Zhu was weak, they didn’t have time to screen targets. Sometimes the targets were so loathsome it made Wuyi physically uncomfortable. But this time was different…
He had witnessed what Qin Yifan did to Xie Jingchuan. He didn’t want anything to do with the guy, yet now he had to watch him and potentially save him.
Sensing his change in mood, Qing Zhu simply said, “His situation isn’t right.”
Wuyi was about to protest when he realized those words sounded familiar. He froze for a moment. Only when the elevator doors opened and a crowd surged in did he snap back to reality. He squeezed out of the elevator clutching his bags, feeling like he had just woken up.
“Qin Yifan’s surname is Qin!”
Qing Zhu: “…”
“Heavens, how did I just realize that?” Wuyi suddenly had an epiphany. “Could he be the son of your… old friend?”
“At his age, likely a grandson.”
“Right. Then doesn’t that make him two generations lower than me?”
“…” Qing Zhu ignored the mumbling and said, “It’s not certain yet, but there is indeed a strong presence of mental energy on him.”
“Then why didn’t you feel it before?” Wuyi asked curiously.
“It only just appeared.” Qing Zhu never explained things too clearly, leaving room for Wuyi to think for himself.
Wuyi pondered for a while and came to a conclusion: “It’s not just a simple nosebleed, is it? Is Qin Yifan sick?”
“Most likely.”
“I see.” Wuyi had already filled in the blanks in his head, finally shaking his head with a sigh. “No wonder. He must be very sick, so he’s not just afraid of Xie Jingchuan looking down on him, he’s jealous that Xie Jingchuan is healthier. What a terrifying person, such strong jealousy.”
Qing Zhu was used to Wuyi’s powerful imagination. He didn’t bother to correct him. Once they were in the car, he only gave one reminder: “Try not to tell Fu Liuye and the others about these things.”
“Why?”
“Overly intervening in others’ karma brings no benefit to those who get too close.”
Wuyi went quiet for two seconds, lowering his head. “Oh. So only your servant can do it.”
Qing Zhu felt his tone was off, but added one more explanation: “You and I have a contract. It’s different.”
“Oh.”
