Chapter 20: A Searing Temperature Never Felt Before…
Wuyi lowered his gaze and toyed with the jade bracelet. He guessed that Qing Zhu had returned to rest, but since the other didn’t speak to him, he remained silent as well.
Because of that gentle, refined gaze earlier, Wuyi felt a rare sense of calm. He sat focused below the stage and earnestly listened to two pieces of music.
Though he understood nothing about music—neither the style nor the genre—he found his attention consistently drawn away by the melodious, soaring sounds of the violin. He remembered Auntie Cen mentioning she would hire an excellent orchestra to perform. He thought… this violinist must be the most famous person in the group; after all, he looked exceptionally talented.
When Fu Liuye’s assistant came to find him for the cake-cutting, Wuyi left his seat and walked to Cen Yue’s side, unable to resist asking for the name of the orchestra.
Searching online, he learned that the young violinist was named Shen Yue. Born into a poor family, he possessed a naturally sharp musical sense and rose to fame with a single piece in his youth. Following a path of advanced studies, he was now among the most famous musicians in the country.
“I didn’t expect Xiao Yi to enjoy it too. I’ll take you to a professional performance of their orchestra later; the effect will be even better.” Finding a rare kindred spirit, Cen Yue became increasingly pleased with Wuyi.
Wuyi agreed without a second thought. “Okay.”
Fu Liuye personally cut the cake, giving portions to Cen Yue and Wuyi. People gathered around to offer well-wishes; unlike their usual serious demeanors, their faces were filled with warm smiles.
Wuyi thought for a moment, then took a plate of cake and slipped away toward the edge of the stage. However, before he could get far, the sound of chasing footsteps echoed behind him.
“Hello, please wait a moment.”
The voice sounded familiar. Wuyi turned around and saw Qin Sijin. His brow furrowed instantly, and he instinctively looked behind her. No one.
Noticing his movement, Qin Sijin gave an awkward smile. “Yifan is still in the hospital.”
Wuyi gave a flat “Oh,” holding a plate of cake in one hand, looking clearly busy.
Qin Sijin seemed to struggle before finally saying, “I was invited to President Fu’s birthday banquet today and didn’t expect to see you here. I wanted to apologize to you.”
“No need.” Wuyi curled his lip; he hated people who only showed kindness when they saw which way the wind was blowing.
He turned to leave immediately, but Qin Sijin clutched her handbag and hurried to catch up.
“I’m sorry. I just learned that the trouble Yifan caused at school was related to you. He’s been spoiled by the family. That day, I thought you just happened to like the same item, but now I know he was intentionally picking a fight. I hope you can give us a chance to make amends.”
Wuyi didn’t look back. “Then have him apologize to me and Xie Jingchuan.”
Qin Sijin froze. “Who is Xie Jingchuan?”
“…” At those words, Wuyi completely lost the desire to communicate. But thinking of the exhausted look on Xie Jingchuan’s face when he was being bullied, he stopped and turned to face her with a cold expression.
“Xie Jingchuan is the student Qin Yifan targets at school. His family is very poor; he’s attending college on student loans and earns his living expenses through part-time jobs. Because he accidentally broke Qin Yifan’s new phone, Yifan made him act as an on-call errand boy for him and his lackeys. He works hard to pay it back, but Yifan’s friends intentionally mess up his jobs, wasting his time and constantly mocking him.”
By this point, Wuyi found it hard to continue. He hadn’t truly felt the weight of Xie Jingchuan’s hardships before, but saying it all out loud made his heart ache.
Qin Sijin, however, breathed a sigh of relief. “A phone is nothing to Yifan. This is indeed his fault. The family knows now. If that student is willing, we can help pay off his loans, including his future living expenses…”
“See? You and Qin Yifan are exactly the same.” Wuyi puffed his cheeks, feeling a mix of anger and helplessness. He felt it was a waste of breath to have said so much today.
Qin Sijin still looked at him with that sincere expression, seemingly not understanding his point. “I don’t quite understand. We are willing to make reparations and have Yifan apologize. That should be sincere enough. Is it not enough for you? Or… you can tell us your thoughts, and we will try to cooperate.”
Hearing her gentle words, Wuyi felt a massive headache coming on and didn’t know how to respond. Just then, a pleasant, cool voice came from behind.
“What this gentleman means is that your attitude is too condescending.”
Wuyi’s eyes lit up as he turned around. It was indeed the violinist who had shone so brightly on stage. Delighted, he called out the man’s name: “Shen Yue!”
Shen Yue smiled and nodded politely. Still wearing his exquisite formal attire, he looked elegant and noble as he naturally walked to Wuyi’s side.
“So you recognize me.”
Wuyi was honest as always. “I just searched for you on my phone.”
Shen Yue was startled for a moment, then laughed. “I see.”
The conversation between the two clearly excluded Qin Sijin. Her brow tightened in embarrassment, but she maintained her polite smile and didn’t leave immediately. Unexpectedly, before Wuyi could look back at her, Shen Yue spoke first.
“Miss, is there anything else? I believe this gentleman’s attitude is quite clear. You can go back and think it over.”
He appeared perfectly refined, but his attitude was a clear dismissal, leaving Qin Sijin embarrassed. “It’s fine, just…”
Wuyi didn’t want to deal with her and thrust the plate of cake toward Shen Yue. “This is the cake I got for you.”
He was always sincere and guileless toward people he liked. Staring at Shen Yue with his watery blue eyes, it was hard for the other to refuse.
“Thank you.” Shen Yue took it and, giving him face, took a spoonful. A warm smile gathered in his eyes as he nodded in approval. “It’s delicious.”
“I made this one,” Wuyi said with a hint of excitement.
Shen Yue showed visible surprise. “You’re truly talented. Is it strawberry jam inside?”
“It’s a mix of several berries. Auntie Cen likes raspberries.”
When talking about things he was good at, Wuyi became quite talkative. Shen Yue listened intently, occasionally offering his own thoughts. Qin Sijin’s smile was beginning to freeze on her face. Sensing the gazes of those around them, she couldn’t stay any longer and turned to leave.
As she turned away, feeling dejected, a sudden chill raced up her spine, giving her goosebumps for no reason. What was that? She instinctively looked back and touched her neck, but there was nothing. Perhaps she had just caught a draft from the air conditioning? Feeling strange, she hurried away.
Seeing her leave, Shen Yue smiled. “You have a strong sense of justice.”
“Mmm, not really.” Wuyi didn’t want to admit it, feeling he could be quite selfish at times.
Fortunately, Shen Yue was a polite person and didn’t push the topic, instead sharing interesting stories from his performances, which made Wuyi very happy. Soon, Wuyi received an invitation to Shen Yue’s concert. While happy, he didn’t think it was a massive deal. They cheerfully exchanged contact info. Habitually touching his wrist, Wuyi discovered the jade bracelet had disappeared.
His expression shifted. He instinctively looked at both shoulders, but found nothing. That’s not right… The bracelet was on his wrist when he was handing out cake. Where did it go?
Usually, as long as the bracelet was on him, Qing Zhu couldn’t go too far. He had been waiting in the hotel room upstairs and seemed to have visited briefly, but now that the bracelet was gone… it meant Qing Zhu had manifested and left. But where could he go?
Shen Yue, being a man of boundaries, noticed the change in his expression and asked a polite question. Seeing Wuyi was reluctant to speak, he made an excuse and left first.
The atmosphere in the ballroom was at its peak. Cen Yue and Fu Liuye were both busy, so Wuyi didn’t tell anyone and hurried upstairs. Back in the suite, Qing Zhu was indeed nowhere to be found.
He instinctively wanted to go out and search, but realized he had no idea where to start. Over the years, he and Qing Zhu were rarely apart. While he didn’t know the exact reason, Qing Zhu had mentioned that in a weakened state, he couldn’t be away for long. This was the first time Qing Zhu had left without a word.
No matter where Wuyi went, Qing Zhu could find him effortlessly, yet he had no way to sense the other. It’s not fair at all!
Wuyi exhaled heavily and collapsed onto the sofa, his mind in a jumble. Only the dim floor lamps were on. It took a long time to snap out of his chaotic thoughts. Looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the vast, dark night sky, unfamiliar memories suddenly flickered in his mind, causing a dull headache.
After a while, he recalled Qin Sijin coming to find him at the banquet and a guess formed. Had Qing Zhu followed her? He had always wanted to determine if the Qin family had ties to his past. He must have followed her to investigate.
With this thought, he grabbed his phone and stood up, only to bump into Fu Liuye coming down the hallway.
“Xiao Yi, you’re here.” Fu Liuye let out a visible sigh of relief. But he soon noticed Wuyi’s pale face and asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”
Wuyi instinctively wanted to tell him, but the moment he opened his mouth, Qing Zhu’s previous warning flashed in his mind. A sudden surge of fear forced him to swallow his words. “Nothing, I just want to go out for a bit.”
Fu Liuye was far too clever not to see through the lie. He stared at him with worried, furrowed brows for a long time before sighing in compromise. “I’ll have the driver take you. Don’t go anywhere dangerous. Call me immediately if anything happens, understand?”
“I understand.” Wuyi trusted Fu Liuye deeply, and deceiving him like this made him feel guilty.
Downstairs, the car was already waiting. The driver opened the door, and Wuyi ducked inside, giving the name of a famous local villa district. The driver Fu Liuye had arranged was tight-lipped, driving in silence the whole way.
It was evening rush hour, and they were stuck in traffic for a long time. Wuyi refused the driver’s request to accompany him inside and hurried out of the car. He was restless the entire way, his head throbbing with a dull pain. After managing to get into the complex, he wandered the massive gardens for a long time without seeing a single building.
Where is it? The cold night wind whistled sharply, making Wuyi’s cheeks sting. But he didn’t care about the cold; his heart was pounding so violently it felt like it might jump out of his chest. This strange physical reaction didn’t make him fear for himself; instead, it confirmed his suspicion that something had happened to Qing Zhu.
After an unknown amount of time, he finally saw a tall, beautiful villa. A black car was parked at the entrance with the engine off. Wuyi didn’t care anymore; making sure no one was around, he ran forward.
Before he could even peer through the car window, a wisp of extremely faint black mist darted out, gently brushing against his cheek before settling on his shoulder.
“Leave.” It was Qing Zhu’s voice—weak and ethereal. Before Wuyi could ask more, he transformed back into a solid black jade bracelet and fell heavily into Wuyi’s palm.
Wuyi was stunned. He instinctively tightened his fingers, but the searing temperature of the jade bracelet against his palm made his entire body freeze.
“Qingqing…”
