My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 86
After sharing some of the snacks she brought with her two roommates, Zheng Yao took Shen Baiyi for a stroll around the campus.
It had been a long time since she last visited A University, and now walking through its various corners with Shen Baiyi, her feelings were quite complex almost as if she and Shen Baiyi were dating on campus.
Their fingers intertwined, they wandered aimlessly around the campus like the most ordinary couple.
“Are you staying in the dorm tonight?” Zheng Yao asked.
Shen Baiyi replied without hesitation, “No, I want to be with my sister.”
“Are you sure?” Zheng Yao hesitated on her behalf. “It seems like both of them arrived yesterday and have already spent a day there. If you move in any later, it might be harder to fit in.”
Shen Baiyi frowned. “Why do I need to fit in with them?”
As she spoke, she tightened her grip on her sister’s hand.
Maintaining a normal classmate relationship was enough—why did she have to integrate with others? She only wanted to be close with her sister. If it weren’t for her sister, she wouldn’t even have friends like Zhu Xiaofu and Zhuang Yang.
Zheng Yao was taken aback by her question.
Suddenly, she felt Shen Baiyi had a very valid point, why did she have to fit in with others?
“You make a lot of sense,” Zheng Yao nodded. “You’re an adult now, and I believe you can handle your own interpersonal relationships.”
Her affirmation was undoubtedly a pleasant surprise for Shen Baiyi, who curved her eyes into a smile. “Thank you, sister!”
Unable to resist, she then stood on her tiptoes and planted a kiss on her sister’s lips.
Zheng Yao was startled and hadn’t even had time to react when she heard gasps nearby. Turning her head, her gaze met a group of young students on another path.
“…”
The girls blushed and eventually hurried away hand in hand.
When Zheng Yao looked back at Shen Baiyi, before she could say anything, Shen Baiyi pitifully said, “Sister, I’m sorry. I didn’t notice them earlier it wasn’t intentional.”
Whether she truly hadn’t noticed or was pretending, Zheng Yao didn’t really care anymore. Seeing her like this, she found it amusing and deliberately suppressed the corners of her lips from curling up, putting on a stern face as she said, “Don’t let it happen again.”
She thought she was acting well, but the hint of laughter at the corners of her eyes was barely concealed. Shen Baiyi’s gaze remained fixed on her face, and the thought of not being able to see her sister for at least a month made her heart feel heavy.
Ah, she really couldn’t bear to be apart from her sister.
But no matter how reluctant she was, she couldn’t stop the military training from arriving. On the second day of the semester, Shen Baiyi joined all the freshmen in participating in the university’s military training.
The military training uniforms were uniformly issued by the school standard camouflage outfits. Yet, when worn by Shen Baiyi, they seemed to carry a unique charm.
It allowed Zheng Yao to spot her at a glance among the crowd of people all dressed in identical camouflage.
Beside her, Zhuang Liulan said with a mix of amusement and exasperation, “It’s a dense sea of people, I can’t even find Yangyang anywhere.”
Turning her head, she saw Zheng Yao already taking photos with her phone. Pausing for a moment, she followed Zheng Yao’s gaze and immediately caught sight of the eye-catching figure.
After staring for a few seconds, she remarked, “Baiyi seems to have grown a lot taller recently. It’s quite rare to keep growing at this age. You’ve taken very good care of her.”
Hearing this, Zheng Yao felt a flush of embarrassment after all, it had always been Shen Baiyi who took care of her more.
It seemed I hadn’t taken care of Shen Baiyi all that much aside from those nourishing soups, I hadn’t really done anything else.
On the contrary, Shen Baiyi was often bustling around me, and I had gained several pounds, with my complexion looking much better.
“You’ve been taking good care of Yangyang too,” I reciprocated sincerely. “I’ve noticed Yangyang seems much closer to you now.”
Originally, Yangyang was quite a quiet and introverted girl, but now she not only appeared more lively but had also grown visibly closer to Zhuang Liulan.
“I used to be so busy with work that I often neglected her feelings,” Zhuang Liulan said with a smile when mentioning her sister. “But recently, our relationship has indeed become much closer.”
Then she asked, “I heard you’re planning to take Dahuang back?”
“Doctor Zhuang, you’re so well-informed.” Zheng Yao finally shifted her gaze from Shen Baiyi and glanced at Zhuang Liulan. “Aren’t you going back to work, Doctor Zhuang? I haven’t seen you at the hospital lately.”
“I’ve been at the branch hospital here recently,” Zhuang Liulan said, handing Zheng Yao a new business card. “The address is on it, and the stored value in your membership card is valid here too.”
There’s actually a branch hospital?!
Zheng Yao couldn’t believe it: “Doctor Zhuang, you’re such a rich second-generation heir!”
“Not really,” Zhuang Liulan chuckled. “Just a working stiff.”
Zheng Yao fell silent. What kind of working stiff owns two pet hospitals?!
But she didn’t dwell on it too much, her attention quickly drawn back to Shen Baiyi, who was undergoing military training.
Shen Baiyi, when serious and stern, looked quite unfamiliar, as if an invisible barrier had risen around her. Her cold, imposing aura made her difficult to approach.
It was completely different from her usual clingy demeanor.
Zheng Yao couldn’t help but sigh.
If she looks this intimidating, how will she get along well with her classmates?
Unable to bear leaving, she asked Zhuang Liulan to go ahead while she moved closer to Shen Baiyi’s class, watching quietly outside the fence. The sun was blazing hot; she was fine under her umbrella, but everyone inside was flushed red from the heat.
Other parents crowded around her, muttering complaints: “Such strong sun, and they won’t even let them rest in the shade! What if someone gets heatstroke?”
“Exactly, it’s heartbreaking to watch!”
“Can the school take responsibility if something happens?”
Listening to the comments around her, Zheng Yao grew more worried. Could Shen Baiyi’s delicate frame hold up?
Just as she was thinking this, someone in Shen Baiyi’s class fainted from heatstroke.
The parents around her gasped in alarm. Although school medical staff quickly arrived to take the person away, the discussions only grew louder, eventually escalating into demands to confront the school administration.
“Miss, your younger sibling must be in there too, right?” someone asked Zheng Yao. “Let’s go talk to the administration together, there’s strength in numbers!”
Zheng Yao glanced up at Shen Baiyi on the field and finally shook her head. “I won’t go.”
Shen Baiyi wasn’t a flower in a greenhouse.
As she watched intently, Shen Baiyi seemed to sense something and suddenly turned to meet her gaze. Both of them froze instinctively, and then Shen Baiyi’s gloomy face instantly broke into a bright smile.
Zheng Yao unconsciously curved her lips in response.
It was as if the cool, distant moon had suddenly transformed into a passionate, warm sun.
The sight made one’s mood instantly brighter.
Coincidentally, the instructor probably noticed some students couldn’t hold on any longer and called for a break. Shen Baiyi immediately flew over like a bird.
“Sister!” She clung to the mesh fence, her face beaming with smiles. “Did you come specifically to see me?”
“Otherwise?” Zheng Yao retorted. Seeing sweat covering her forehead, she couldn’t help but take out a tissue to wipe it. “Don’t worry about me. Go back to your team later rest when you should, drink water when you need to, or chat with your roommates.”
As she spoke, she couldn’t resist asking, “How did you get along with your roommates last night?”
“Just so-so.” Shen Baiyi didn’t want to talk about them. “Sister, will you have lunch with me in the cafeteria?”
“Want me to keep you company all morning?” Zheng Yao raised an eyebrow. “With such strong sunlight, you want me to suffer along with you?”
No sooner had she finished speaking than Shen Baiyi shook her head frantically. “No.”
Frowning, she said, “The UV rays are strong outside. Sister, your skin is delicate. It’s better not to accompany me. You should head back early.”
Her considerate words made Zheng Yao’s heart swell with affection. Glancing at the time, she saw there was still about an hour left until the military training ended. After a moment’s thought, she said, “The cafeteria will probably be crowded later. It’ll be hard to grab a meal.”
Hearing this, Shen Baiyi instinctively wanted to argue, but then her sister added, “I’ll go out to eat something first and bring you a packed meal when it’s almost over.”
Shen Baiyi immediately swallowed the words she was about to say.
She nodded and sighed softly. “With my small frame, I’d probably get knocked over trying to fight for food. Luckily, I have you, sister.”
Zheng Yao’s heart melted at her words, and she couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch her cheek. “Hang in there.”
The break during military training couldn’t be too long, as the instructor might call them to assemble at any moment. Not daring to keep Shen Baiyi for too long, Zheng Yao handed her a bottle of water and urged her to hurry back.
Shen Baiyi was reluctant to leave. “Sister, I’ll message you after the training ends.”
“Okay.”
Zheng Yao went to a small restaurant she had visited before. The food there wasn’t particularly delicious, but it was clean and reliable.
However, it was still early. Her order was ready just after 11 a.m. Since she had eaten breakfast late, she wasn’t very hungry yet and only picked at her food, barely eating a few bites.
She waited until it was almost time for Shen Baiyi’s training to end. By then, the owner had packed the meal, and she rode her electric scooter to the school.
She had just bought it for Shen Baiyi simple and easy to handle, perfect for riding to classes and convenient for commuting between the school and the apartment.
She arrived just as the freshmen were dismissed. The place was swarming with people, making her dizzy as she tried to distinguish one from another.
After parking by the roadside, she took out her phone and was about to check for messages from Shen Baiyi when she heard her voice from behind. “Sister!”
Shen Baiyi looked anxious. “Have you been waiting long, sister?”
“Just got here.” Zheng Yao smiled. “Hop on. I’ll take you to the cafeteria.”
“Okay.”
Shen Baiyi swung her long leg over and settled on the scooter in one swift motion, stretching her arms forward to wrap them around Zheng Yao. But just as quickly, she let go and shifted backward.
Zheng Yao was about to say she was holding on too tightly when she noticed Shen Baiyi pulling away as if avoiding the plague. Surprised, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
Shen Baiyi sighed. “I’m covered in sweat. I don’t want to dirty your clothes, sister.”
“Speaking, she placed both hands on Zheng Yao’s shoulders, turning her to face forward: ‘Sister, hurry up and ride the bike. If we’re any later, there won’t be any seats left in the cafeteria.’
‘I don’t even mind you, so what are you afraid of?’ Zheng Yao was both amused and exasperated. Besides, Shen Baiyi didn’t have any unpleasant sweat odor in her memory, Shen Baiyi had never smelled bad.
Even in the remote countryside, she was always neatly put together, looking like a sweet-smelling young girl.
‘And it’s impossible for the cafeteria to be full.’ Zheng Yao raised an eyebrow. ‘Your second and third-year seniors haven’t even started school yet.’
The freshmen started nearly half a month earlier than the upperclassmen.
‘So, sister, do you want me to hold you?’
Shen Baiyi’s comprehension always seemed to baffle Zheng Yao, but upon hearing these words, Zheng Yao couldn’t deny it.”
