My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 76
Shen Baiyi looked up, her face instantly blooming into a smile, her curved eyes and brows appearing exceptionally gentle: “I knew you were the best, sis.”
Zheng Yao nodded with satisfaction: “Good that you know.”
Of course, it only took a few seconds for her to suddenly realize Shen Baiyi was once again using sweet talk to bewitch her.
This girl’s words were too honeyed; if she let her guard down even slightly, she’d find herself being led around by the other.
The most absurd part was that despite being this old, she actually fell for it every time, feeling immensely pleased whenever she heard those sweet nothings.
“Zheng Yao?”
Zhuang Liulan’s voice snapped Zheng Yao out of her thoughts. She looked over and saw Zhuang Liulan’s gaze fixed on their tightly clasped hands, instinctively wanting to let go.
Of course, she didn’t succeed.
Turning her head, she saw Shen Baiyi’s gaze tinged with melancholy: “What’s wrong, sis?”
Unconsciously, the words Shen Baiyi had said earlier surfaced in her mind, if she let go of her hand now, it really would seem like they were sneaking around.
After a brief moment of guilt, she tightened her grip on Shen Baiyi’s hand, pretending nothing had happened.
“Dr. Zhuang.” She lifted her head calmly, her expression natural, “I’m here to pick up Bub and Yaoyao. Thank you for taking care of them during this time.”
“No trouble at all, it’s just part of the job.” As she spoke, Zhuang Liulan’s gaze involuntarily drifted to their clasped hands. Suppressing her emotions, she smiled and said, “You two sisters have such a close bond. Yangyang has grown up now and hasn’t held my hand in years.”
Before Zheng Yao could respond, Shen Baiyi had already chimed in with a beaming smile: “Maybe it’s just not enough affection? It’s different with me and sis we really, really like each other and wish we could stick together every single day.”
As she spoke, she rested her head against Zheng Yao: “Right, sis?”
What was she doing?
Zheng Yao felt her face burn with embarrassment but had to feign composure: “What nonsense are you talking? How could Zhuang Yang not like Dr. Zhuang? It’s just that everyone expresses love differently.A smirk tugged at Shen Baiyi’s lips as she cast a somewhat provocative look at Dr. Zhuang: “True, the bond between sisters and that between lovers are ultimately different. Dr. Zhuang, I misspoke earlier my apologies.”
Had she even mentioned the difference between sisters and lovers earlier?
Zheng Yao twitched her lips. Even someone as thick-skinned as her could detect the boastful tone in Shen Baiyi’s words.
Shen Baiyi was still young, after all. They had only just gotten together, yet she seemed eager to announce their relationship to the whole world.
The shift from sister to girlfriend was somewhat awkward, especially since she had once considered being with Zhuang Liulan.
“How was that big yellow dog from yesterday?” she changed the subject.
Zhuang Liulan nodded: “It’s doing quite well. Would you like to go see it?”
“Sure.” Zheng Yao agreed while giving Shen Baiyi’s hand a slight squeeze, signaling her to behave.
Shen Baiyi settled down.
After all, she just wanted Dr. Zhuang to know that she and her sister were together. Now that her goal was achieved, she certainly wouldn’t upset her sister further.
The big yellow dog was lying asleep in its cage, but the moment it saw Shen Baiyi, it became instantly excited, its tail thumping loudly against the cage while emitting soft whimpers.
Its fur had already been shaved off, making it look quite ugly. Without the cover of fur, its emaciated and bony appearance was even more startling.
Shen Baiyi moved closer to pet the dog Dahuang, but Zheng Yao didn’t like it and retreated outside the room, watching quietly.
“Its skin condition is quite severe, and it has long-term malnutrition. It will need medicated baths and some medication for the next period of time,” Zhuang Liulan said softly beside her.
“Okay,” Zheng Yao nodded. “Thank you for taking the trouble.”
“Zheng Yao, why have you become so distant with me after going out?” Zhuang Liulan smiled helplessly. “Aren’t we friends?”
“Of course we’re friends,” Zheng Yao nodded, a smile appearing on her face. “I’m genuinely grateful that you’ve been taking care of my Bubumiaomiao all along, and now you have to trouble yourself with looking after another dog.”
It was only recently that she learned Dr. Zhuang was the daughter of the hospital director. In other words, this hospital belonged to Dr. Zhuang. Taking care of cats and dogs wasn’t actually part of Dr. Zhuang’s responsibilities, but Zhuang Liulan had been the one sending her updates about Bubumiaomiao’s condition all this time.
“It’s nothing, and I really like Bubumiaomiao too,” she said, then suddenly steered the conversation back to the relationship between Zheng Yao and Shen Baiyi. “From what Baiyi said earlier, are you two together now?”
The topic was suddenly brought into the open, and Zheng Yao instinctively froze.
“Yes,” she admitted openly after a moment, but didn’t elaborate further.
Although it had never been explicitly stated, both of them knew that they had previously considered trying to be together.
Zheng Yao felt somewhat awkward about it.
“That’s good,” Zhuang Liulan nodded. “She seems to really like you.”
She didn’t seem surprised at all, nor did she appear to mind. She even offered a proper blessing: “I wish you both happiness.”
“Thank you,” Zheng Yao let out a sigh of relief, her gaze toward Zhuang Liulan carrying more warmth. “I wish Dr. Zhuang finds a wonderful partner soon too.”
Facing Zheng Yao’s blessing, Zhuang Liulan merely curved her lips slightly and added, “Actually, I had my suspicions before. Now that I have the answer, it’s quite interesting.”
“Was it, obvious before?” Zheng Yao was slightly taken aback.
Zhuang Liulan: “Of course. It wasn’t noticeable at first, but later it became clear at a glance.”
Mainly because Shen Baiyi didn’t seem to try to hide it in front of her. She had always been somewhat hostile toward Zhuang Liulan, and after Zhuang Liulan had more contact with Zheng Yao, her hostility became increasingly unconcealed.
It was hard for Zhuang Liulan to ignore.
Zheng Yao, misunderstanding Zhuang Liulan’s meaning, stared blankly.
She hadn’t had those kinds of feelings for Shen Baiyi before, right? How could Zhuang Liulan have seen it at a glance? Zheng Yao couldn’t help but reflect on herself, wondering when exactly she had started developing those feelings for Shen Baiyi?
She couldn’t figure it out.
So, was it because her affection for Shen Baiyi had been too obvious, leading Shen Baiyi to misunderstand and develop those feelings for her in return?
After all this, it turned out that she was the one who had corrupted Shen Baiyi?!
At the thought of this possibility, Zheng Yao became completely distracted.
Shen Baiyi, who had been focused on watching the dog, suddenly sensed something. She turned her head and saw her sister standing with Zhuang Liulan, her sister looking absent-minded. Instantly, she became alert.
She quickly stood up and walked toward her sister, unceremoniously pushing Zhuang Liulan aside. She took her sister’s hand: “Sister, shall we go see Bubumiaomiao?”
But her hand was suddenly shaken off by her sister.
Shen Baiyi froze, her eyes darkening slightly as she looked up at her sister with disbelief.
“Did you wash your hands?” Zheng Yao frowned. “You touched the dog and then held my hand without washing?”
The shadow in Shen Baiyi’s eyes dissipated as she remembered her sister’s dislike for dogs. A pang of regret flashed through her heart, but soon her eyes curved into crescents again: “I forgot, don’t be angry, sister.”
Yet in front of Zhuang Liulan, she couldn’t resist reaching out again: “Sister’s hand is already dirty, let me help you wash it clean.”
Of course, she felt anxious inside.
But soon, the hand being held made her instantly feel secure. Her sister’s scolding voice sounded like heavenly music to her ears: “Don’t let it happen again.”
“Okay.” Shen Baiyi nodded emphatically.
She would never make such a mistake again.
Even if she wanted Zhuang Liulan to know that sister belonged to her, it shouldn’t be at the cost of making sister uncomfortable.
Fortunately, sister wasn’t angry with her.
–
After being apart for over half a month, even the aloof Buboo kept meowing incessantly at the sight of Zheng Yao, rubbing against her constantly.
Looking at the two cats acting spoiled toward her, Zheng Yao’s heart melted completely.
She took out the gifts she had prepared for Buboo and Yaoyao. To prevent the two little masters from fighting over them, all the gifts were identical.
Both toys and snacks were exactly the same, ensuring neither little master would feel slighted.
But Buboo never cared much for toys or snacks. After sniffing them briefly, he immediately lost interest and quietly returned to his bed to sleep.
Yaoyao, however, was having a blast chasing a small ball around, running back and forth excitedly. The occasional clattering sounds of him bumping into things could be heard frequently.
After half a month apart, he seemed even wilder.
All the timidity and obedience from their first meeting had completely disappeared.
After staring at him thoughtfully for a long while, Zheng Yao reached a conclusion: This cat was exactly like its owner.
Both were great at pretending.
Just as this thought crossed her mind, the sound of chopping vegetables came from the kitchen. She rubbed her nose – well, all things considered, Shen Baiyi had been consistent.
Her inexplicable affection for Zheng Yao, along with her attentiveness to chores – these were things Shen Baiyi had never changed.
Overall, aside from being somewhat young and a bit clingy, Shen Baiyi was practically a perfect partner.
Besides, given Shen Baiyi’s youth, her clinginess was understandable. Hadn’t Zheng Yao known all along that Shen Baiyi lacked affection?
Thinking this, she became contemplative.
Therefore, she should cherish Shen Baiyi even more, loving and pampering her wholeheartedly.
–
Dinner was sumptuous.
Shen Baiyi always had the magic to transform ordinary dishes into something incredibly appetizing.
After eating her fill, Zheng Yao noticed Shen Baiyi about to clear the dishes and quickly stopped her.
“I’ve hired a housekeeper. You don’t need to handle household chores every day.”
As she spoke, she took Shen Baiyi’s hand, originally intending just to pull her over. But she hadn’t expected Shen Baiyi to be so cooperative – easily pulled over and sitting on her lap.
Zheng Yao: “…”
Since when had they become so intimate?
Just as she was about to stand up, her eyes unexpectedly met Shen Baiyi’s.
She suddenly came to her senses.
Well, it wasn’t really a problem. They were a proper couple now – they’d already kissed, so what was sitting on a lap?
Feeling completely at ease, she sat back down, wrapping her arms around Shen Baiyi’s waist. She cleared her throat lightly to mask her slight discomfort: “You’re my girlfriend, not a hired nanny. There’s no need to busy yourself with housework every day.”
Hearing the first part, Shen Baiyi couldn’t help but let the corners of her mouth lift.
But after a moment’s thought, she still said: “Sister likes the dishes I cook.”
Nothing made her happier than knowing her cooking was appreciated by her sister.
“Little sister,” Zheng Yao said seriously, putting on a grave expression, “It’s what we can’t have that keeps us longing. If you cook for me every day, aren’t you afraid I might get tired of it someday?”
This was an angle Shen Baiyi had never considered.
She had only been thinking about making sure her sister could eat the dishes she liked, about making her sister depend on her, completely overlooking the importance of novelty.
“Will Sister get tired of me someday too?” She frowned.
