My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 34
The next moment, Zheng Yao stirred on the sofa. Shen Baiyi startled and was about to withdraw her finger when she suddenly felt warmth on her fingertip.
Immediately after, a moist little tongue swept across her hand.
Fireworks exploded in her mind.
Shen Baiyi’s eyes widened slightly as she froze completely, not daring to make any movement.
–
Zheng Yao hadn’t slept for long.
Hearing the sound of running water, she sat up while holding her forehead.
Checking the time, she realized it was already late Shen Baiyi had finished evening self-study.
Getting up to turn on the lights, she brought out the black chicken soup she’d stewed earlier from the kitchen. After some thought, she took out two bowls.
She’d been dreaming about eating earlier, gnawing at something without actually getting to eat it, and now she was hungry.
She wondered if Shen Baiyi knew how to make braised pork trotters. She suddenly had a craving for some.
Just as she was thinking this, the bathroom door opened.
“Come have some soup,” Zheng Yao called out.
“Okay.”
Seeing Shen Baiyi’s hair dripping wet, Zheng Yao immediately frowned.
“You need to dry it,” she said, standing up. “Eat first. I’ll get the hairdryer.”
As usual, Shen Baiyi nodded obediently. Soon, she saw her sister walk behind her with the hairdryer. Her eyes widened slightly. “Are you going to dry my hair for me?”
“Don’t mind me,” Zheng Yao said, pinching Shen Baiyi’s chin to turn her head forward. “Just eat.”
High school seniors already had little rest time every minute saved counted. By the time Shen Baiyi finished eating, her hair would be mostly dry, not delaying her rest.
“You’re so good to me.”
Shen Baiyi couldn’t help but sigh.
Zheng Yao gave a light hum and was about to speak when she suddenly noticed teeth marks on Shen Baiyi’s hand. Her brows instantly furrowed.
Forgetting about the hair for a moment, she grabbed the finger to examine it closely. Confirming they were indeed teeth marks, her expression turned serious. “Was it Bub or Yao?”
Shen Baiyi’s eyes flickered. She lowered her head and hesitantly offered up a scapegoat: “It was Yao.”
It wasn’t exactly a lie.
Just that this “Yao” wasn’t the feline one.
Zheng Yao rubbed her temples. “Did it bleed? It must have broken skin. You might need a rabies shot.”
“No,” Shen Baiyi denied immediately. “It was just a light nip. No broken skin or bleeding. No need for a shot.”
Zheng Yao fell silent, studying the finger again before suddenly noticing something odd.
These marks didn’t look like a cat’s bite, the pattern resembled human teeth.
She grew stern. “Was it really Yao who bit you?”
“It was me,” Shen Baiyi admitted reluctantly when she realized she couldn’t fool her way out. “I was too focused on a problem and accidentally bit down too hard.”
Zheng Yao: “…”
Impressive biting herself hard enough to leave marks.
But recalling Shen Baiyi’s earlier lie, she remained stern and lectured righteously, “Don’t lie when you’ve done something wrong. Own up to your actions, understand?”
“Understood.”
Seeing her sister’s anger, Shen Baiyi wilted.
Zheng Yao didn’t dwell on it and resumed drying Shen Baiyi’s hair. Remembering Shen Baiyi’s excuse about biting her finger while solving problems, she couldn’t help but ask, “Are you under a lot of stress lately?”
“It’s manageable.”
There was definitely pressure, but it was within an acceptable range. During the first school exam, her ranking was thirty-second in the grade. But after working hard during this period, she had improved by a few places in the last exam and was now ranked twenty-fifth.
With her current grades, getting into University A wouldn’t be a problem at all.
It was just that Chinese and English had been dragging her down.
Improving in these two subjects was relatively difficult, but not impossible. With less than two months left, she felt she could push herself a little harder to achieve results that would satisfy her sister even more.
But Zheng Yao actually didn’t have high expectations for Shen Baiyi’s grades.
“Your grades are already quite good.”
At times like these, Zheng Yao believed it was her duty to play the role of a caring older sister. Without hesitation, she said, “Balance work and rest, don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”
Unexpectedly, this only made Shen Baiyi more determined.
Lowering her gaze, Shen Baiyi hinted, “If only my English were half as good as yours, Sister.”
Zheng Yao fell right into the trap. “English?”
“Yes.” Shen Baiyi turned her head, lifting her face to look at her sister. “I heard your English grades were excellent, and you were even the English class representative before.”
How did Shen Baiyi even find that out?
Zheng Yao coughed lightly, trying to stay modest. “Just average, really.”
“What do you mean average? It’s already amazing.” As she spoke, Shen Baiyi wrapped her arms around Zheng Yao’s and gave it a gentle shake. “Sister, could you help me with English tomorrow?”
“Well, I could.” Zheng Yao hesitated. “But you should balance work and rest. It’s rare to have a break, it’s fine to relax a little.”
“Sister, I don’t feel tired at all.” Not wanting to miss this chance, Shen Baiyi pleaded earnestly, “Please help me, Sister.”
During these past few holidays, her sister had always let her do as she pleased. Though she spent most of her time in the living room, her sister rarely left her room. Other than meals together, it wasn’t much different from when they were at school.
Though she could sense that her sister wasn’t as distant as before, it still wasn’t enough.
If things stayed like this, once the college entrance exams were over, she probably wouldn’t be able to stay by her sister’s side anymore.
She needed more time with her sister.
“Alright then.” Zheng Yao didn’t suspect anything. Having gone through her own senior year, she understood the importance of exam preparation.
–
To tutor Shen Baiyi in English, Zheng Yao did some preparation. But it had been so long since high school that some of her knowledge was rusty. Suddenly remembering that Dr. Zhuang had a younger sister who was also in her final year and excelling academically, she decided to reach out for advice.
Zhuang Liulan happened to be on leave today and was planning to buy study materials for her sister at the bookstore. The two hit it off immediately and arranged to meet there.
Since she was asking for a favor, Zheng Yao didn’t want to show up empty-handed. Before leaving, she packed a bag of homemade cookies.
Though her cooking skills were lacking, she was quite good at making small cakes and cookies.
After discovering that Shen Baiyi really liked her cookies, she often made them for her to take to school as snacks.
She wasn’t sure if Dr. Zhuang would like them.
As it turned out, Dr. Zhuang had similar tastes to Shen Baiyi.
“Thank you, I love them.” Zhuang Liulan accepted the cookies with a pleasantly surprised expression.
“I should be the one thanking you,” Zheng Yao chuckled. “Later, I’ll have to trouble Dr. Zhuang to recommend some English materials. The one at home always lags behind in English, and with the college entrance exams approaching, I’d like to help her improve a bit.”
Sensing their relationship had grown closer, Zhuang Liulan casually asked, “Is it the young girl who came to the hospital last time?”
“Yes, her name is Shen Baiyi. She’s in Class 2 of No. 1 High School, the same class as your sister.” This was something Zheng Yao deliberately brought up.
She had seen the recent exam rankings Dr. Zhuang’s sister was simply outstanding, not only ranking first in the school but also nearly scoring full marks in English.
“What a coincidence,” Zhuang Liulan said, surprised. “My sister has mentioned her several times. I didn’t realize she was your sister.”
Zheng Yao didn’t like people mistaking Shen Baiyi for her sister, but their relationship wasn’t easy to explain, so she simply let it slide. “Baiyi has mentioned your sister a few times too, Dr. Zhuang. Your sister is truly impressive.”
This was purely Zheng Yao’s personal opinion.
Though Shen Baiyi often shared things with her, she rarely talked about others.
Both having a student preparing for the college entrance exams at home, the two found themselves with more to talk about. Eventually, Zhuang Liulan suggested, “How about we have lunch together? We can bring the two girls along.”
“Sure.” The idea suited Zheng Yao perfectly, and she nodded in agreement.
After buying the study materials and seeing it was about time, the two went to the school to pick up the girls.
To Zheng Yao’s surprise, Shen Baiyi seemed somewhat indifferent about going out for lunch.
Her enthusiasm remained low throughout.
On the way back, Zheng Yao asked proactively, “Are you in a bad mood today?”
“No,” Shen Baiyi shook her head. She pursed her lips, then couldn’t help but ask, “Sister, when did you get so close to that Dr. Zhuang?”
They hadn’t seemed particularly familiar during their last hospital visit, yet now they were having meals together.
And…
Sister had even given Dr. Zhuang some cookies.
“We’ve known each other for over a year,” Zheng Yao replied, looking at Shen Baiyi seriously. “Her sister, Zhuang Yang, is excellent in English. If you have any questions, you can ask her.”
Zheng Yao was a calculating adult her actions always had a purpose. The reason she’d agreed so readily to Dr. Zhuang’s lunch invitation was partly to have Zhuang Yang look out for Shen Baiyi.
Fortunately, Dr. Zhuang shared her mindset. Knowing Shen Baiyi excelled in math, she also hoped the two girls could complement each other.
No wonder they’d hit it off so well.
“Oh.”
Shen Baiyi’s mood remained subdued. She didn’t like it when Zheng Yao praised others, but there was nothing she could do she simply wasn’t as good as them.
She had always been obedient and well-behaved around Zheng Yao.
If Sister wanted her to be friends with someone, she would be friends with them.
So, in the following days, despite her reluctance, Shen Baiyi inevitably grew closer to Zhuang Yang.
Zhuang Yang was academically outstanding but average in appearance, often keeping to herself. Many considered her aloof.
But after spending time with her, it became clear she wasn’t arrogant just socially awkward.
Zhuang Yang spoke little, and neither did Shen Baiyi. Putting two quiet people together often led to awkward silences. Luckily, they had Zhu Xiaofu, who was naturally sociable. With her around, the three of them could eat together without it being too uncomfortable.
Over time, they gradually became more familiar.
Shen Baiyi was weak in English, while Zhuang Yang lagged behind in math. The two helped each other out, and by the next mock exam, both had made significant progress.
From the moment she got her test paper, the smile in Shen Baiyi’s eyes never faded.
She deliberately tucked her 120-point exam into her backpack and, as soon as evening self-study ended, hurriedly hopped on her bike to rush home.
But she never expected to be stopped halfway.
The men were clearly prepared, two blocked her path in front, while another grabbed the back of her bike, leaving her trapped.
“Don’t be in such a hurry, little sister,” the man in front said with an unsettling grin, his tone lecherous. “We really like you. Why not hang out with us for a bit?”
Shen Baiyi’s heart raced.
Strangely, she felt more excitement than fear in this situation.
But today, she had to go home and show her test results to her sister she didn’t want to waste time. “Get lost.”
“Tsk, the little missy prefers the hard way,” the man chuckled. “Playing with us won’t do you any harm. Don’t make us angry, be a good girl, alright?”
