My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 35
Some things seemed to be etched into her mind, requiring no time for thought her hands and feet moved instinctively.
These people dared to act so recklessly because they knew this was a secluded path with no surveillance. Shen Baiyi was at a slight disadvantage facing three opponents, but fortunately, there were stones on the ground. Seizing the moment when they were off guard, she grabbed a stone and swung it at them.
She didn’t linger to fight. Before they could react, she dropped the stone, jumped onto her bicycle, and fled.
Once she reached the open main road with surveillance cameras, the group didn’t dare to chase her further.
Still, Shen Baiyi remained cautious, deliberately taking several detours before heading home.
Being harassed herself was a minor issue, but if these people saw her sister and dared to disrespect her, that would be a real problem.
However, the delay meant she arrived home much later than usual.
Just as she reached the door, she saw her sister preparing to go out. Shen Baiyi froze. “It’s so late. Where are you going, Sister?”
Zheng Yao, who had been about to go look for Shen Baiyi, paused.
After a long moment, Zheng Yao frowned at her. “Why are you back so late?”
Her gaze immediately landed on the mud stains on Shen Baiyi’s backpack, and her expression darkened further. “What happened to your bag?”
“There was a problem I couldn’t solve, so I stayed in the classroom a bit longer.”
Seeing the worry on her sister’s face, Shen Baiyi felt waves of warmth in her heart. She pulled her backpack to the front and only then noticed a shoe print on it.
Her eyes darkened slightly as she brushed the dirt off, her expression unchanged. “I must have put my bag on the ground, and someone accidentally kicked it.”
Zheng Yao wasn’t pleased. “No matter how important studying is, it’s not worth compromising your safety, especially this late.”
She had originally planned to let Shen Baiyi ride her bicycle to school in the mornings but intended to pick her up in the evenings, given the higher risks at night.
But Shen Baiyi had insisted on riding alone, and Zheng Yao had eventually relented.
Now, however, Zheng Yao was uneasy again.
Shen Baiyi was growing more beautiful by the day sometimes even Zheng Yao couldn’t help but admire her, let alone others. While most people in society were good, that didn’t mean there were no bad apples.
Better safe than sorry.
She made a firm decision, leaving no room for argument. “Starting tomorrow, I’ll pick you up in the evenings.”
“Alright.”
Uncontrollable joy surged in Shen Baiyi’s heart.
Her sister was worried about her did that mean she was becoming more important in her sister’s heart?
Suddenly remembering her English test, she quickly pulled it out, her voice lifting slightly. “Sister, my English has improved.”
“Really?” Zheng Yao was surprised. She took the test paper and glanced at it, then immediately brightened. “That’s a huge improvement!”
Admittedly, having Dr. Zhuang’s sister and Shen Baiyi help each other had been effective.
“It’s all thanks to your teaching, Sister.” Shen Baiyi’s eyes curved into crescents. “With your guidance, I don’t have to worry about English dragging me down anymore.”
Zheng Yao felt a little smug from the praise, but it lasted only a moment. She pushed Shen Baiyi’s overly close head away, feigning sternness. “Don’t get complacent. Your improvement is the result of your own hard work. If you slack off now.”
Before she could finish, Shen Baiyi covered her mouth.
Shen Baiyi pouted, looking aggrieved. “Sister, won’t you even praise me?”
Shen Baiyi’s hand was cool against Zheng Yao’s burning lips, creating a stark contrast between ice and fire. Zheng Yao froze for a moment.
Soon, she pulled Shen Baiyi’s hand away, suppressing the subtle emotions in her heart, and blurted out, “Alright, alright, you’re the best, the greatest, the most amazing person in the world.”
As she spoke, she couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch the soft flesh on Shen Baiyi’s cheek. “Did you even wash your hands before touching my face?”
Seeing Shen Baiyi in this state now filled Zheng Yao with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.
Just look at how nice this feels to pinch so satisfying!
“I did wash them,” Shen Baiyi tilted her head slightly, deliberately rubbing her cheek against Zheng Yao’s hand, her eyes curving into crescents. “I washed them downstairs just now.”
She would never dream of touching her sister with hands that had been in contact with others.
“Alright, go eat. After that, take a bath and get to bed early.”
Shen Baiyi was like a little puppy, always nuzzling against her. After nearly two months, Zheng Yao had grown somewhat accustomed to it.
Yet, as she sat on the sofa watching Shen Baiyi obediently drink the soup she had prepared, Zheng Yao couldn’t help but sigh softly.
She had never imagined her relationship with Shen Baiyi would turn out like this.
So intimate.
At first, she had only intended for Shen Baiyi to be an ordinary tenant staying in her home.
But before she knew it, she had started to care.
And once she cared, emotions naturally followed especially since Shen Baiyi was so attentive, her words sweet as honey. Every morning, despite having early classes herself, she would prepare breakfast and keep the house spotless, never giving Zheng Yao any cause for concern.
Even on holidays, she was well-behaved.
She always used her free time to cook lavish meals, to the point where Zheng Yao found herself looking forward most to the days Shen Baiyi returned home to fill the table with dishes.
She was diligent in her studies too. Her teachers praised her hard work, saying she never needed supervision and showed steady improvement in every mock exam.
Falling for someone as sensible and sweet as Shen Baiyi was only natural.
But did that really mean she was gaining a little sister?
At this thought, Zheng Yao frowned again.
Meow!
A cat’s cry pulled her back from her thoughts. Looking down, she saw the pitch-black kitten sprawled at her feet, belly up, its head tilted as it stared at her.
“…”
Ah, utterly adorable.
Picking the little thing up and placing it on her lap, Zheng Yao contentedly scratched its tiny belly.
Yaoyao and Bub were completely different types of cats. Bub was aloof toward her, while Yaoyao was clingy, always craving attention and play, happy to be poked and prodded in any way.
Just like her owner.
Thinking this, Zheng Yao glanced toward the dining table. Bub, as if having switched allegiance, was still sitting behind Shen Baiyi, showing no reaction even as Zheng Yao held another cat.
Zheng Yao pondered.
It was often said that every cat had a unique personality, and that was certainly true. As the newcomer, Yaoyao was far more possessive of her than Bub ever was.
Bub was aloof and zen-like, with little territorial instinct, but this little one would meow incessantly whenever Zheng Yao held Bub.
Both clingy and domineering.
Ah, what a sweet burden.
Since Shen Baiyi had made significant progress in English and there were only about thirty days left until the college entrance exams, Zheng Yao decided to take her out for a short trip during this holiday.
Unexpectedly, Dr. Zhuang had the same idea and proactively asked about her plans for the week.
Once again, they were in perfect agreement.
Parking near the amusement park was troublesome, so Zheng Yao didn’t drive. Instead, Dr. Zhuang came to pick them up from home.
“Big sis,” Shen Baiyi said unhappily, “Why are we hanging out with Dr. Zhuang and her sister again?”
“Aren’t you friends with her younger sister now?” Zheng Yao replied while applying sunscreen. “She helped you improve your English grades, and last time we ate out, her sister paid. So this outing comes with obligations, understand?”
Shen Baiyi pressed her lips together. “No, I don’t.”
Her muffled voice sounded off. Zheng Yao turned to give her a puzzled look. “Of course it’s about paying. This time I need to be quicker than Dr. Zhuang can’t let her pay before me again.”
Favors should always be reciprocated. Otherwise, being in debt would make even sleep uncomfortable.
“Fine.”
Shen Baiyi wasn’t truly clueless she just wanted to spend time alone with her sister.
And…
Seeing how close her sister had grown to Dr. Zhuang lately made her unhappy. It felt like an intruder had invaded her territory. She was angry and wary, yet too powerless to do anything.
Zhuang Yang, however, was visibly excited about the outing. The moment they arrived, she tried pulling Shen Baiyi along.
With her sister present, Shen Baiyi couldn’t act too cold, so she let Zhuang Yang drag her around.
Only when she realized her sister wasn’t following did she glance back and saw Zheng Yao walking side by side with Dr. Zhuang, laughing at something the doctor had said.
It was a side of her sister she had never shown before.
The way Dr. Zhuang looked at her sister was off. In that instant, Shen Baiyi suddenly understood what Lin Weiwei had meant when she said, “The moment I saw you, I knew we were the same.”
Dr. Zhuang was like her.
Dr. Zhuang liked her sister.
The realization made her stop dead in her tracks, yanking Zhuang Yang to a halt.
“What’s wrong?” Zhuang Yang asked, confused.
“I want to be with my sister,” Shen Baiyi murmured. “We’re not that close, and I want to change that. Yangyang, can you help me?”
Zhuang Yang knew a little about Shen Baiyi’s situation that she was living under someone else’s roof. Without hesitation, she nodded. “Of course!”
–
“Jie, I want to ride that come with me.” Zhuang Yang tugged at her sister’s hand, her face flushing red from guilt.
“The roller coaster?” Zhuang Liulan sounded surprised. “Why that?”
“I want to try it. They say it’s stress-relieving.” That part was true, but remembering her promise to Shen Baiyi, she glanced at Zheng Yao. “I heard Xiao Bai is scared of heights. I still want to try the drop tower later, so Sister Zheng, why don’t you and Xiao Bai go do something else first? We can meet up before heading back.”
Xiao Bai?
Scared of heights?
Zheng Yao gave Shen Baiyi a surprised look, unsure which was more unexpected that her friend had given her such a cute nickname, or that she was afraid of heights.
Seeing Dr. Zhuang’s conflicted expression, Zheng Yao took the initiative. “It’s fine, Dr. Zhuang. You two go ahead. I’ll take Xiao Bai somewhere else.”
Standing beside Zheng Yao, Shen Baiyi’s face burned. She couldn’t help stealing a glance at her sister, replaying the way she had just called her Xiao Bai. Her heartbeat raced uncontrollably.
This was the first time her sister had ever called her something so intimate.
Dr. Zhuang took Zhuang Yang to queue for the roller coaster, so Zheng Yao asked Shen Baiyi, “What do you want to try?”
Shen Baiyi snapped out of her thoughts, remembering the suggestion Zhuang Yang had just given her. She tentatively asked, “How about the haunted house?”
That way she could see if her sister was scared or not.
If her sister got scared, she could protect and comfort her. If her sister wasn’t afraid, then she’d be the one to act frightened.
“Not bad,” Zheng Yao replied modestly.
In reality, as a mystery novel writer, a mere haunted house couldn’t possibly frighten her.
The two of them headed toward the haunted house together.
The amusement park was overwhelmingly crowded on the weekend, with children everywhere. Seeing many people walking hand in hand, Shen Baiyi tentatively reached out to hold Zheng Yao’s hand.
The moment their fingers touched, her sister immediately pulled her hand away.
Zheng Yao turned back with an unfriendly tone, “What are you doing?”
“There are so many people, I’m afraid we’ll get separated.”
Shen Baiyi spoke innocently.
Zheng Yao fell silent. She couldn’t argue with that, so she reluctantly extended her hand. “Fine.”
Shen Baiyi didn’t have a phone, and the amusement park was so vast if they really got separated, finding each other would be a hassle.
