My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 15
Shen Baiyi’s gaze had already begun to glaze over, her fingers outside the blanket curled into a claw-like shape, stiff and twitching intermittently.
It was clearly not normal.
Zheng Yao’s expression changed instantly as she hurriedly pressed the call button for the doctor.
The doctor arrived quickly and immediately recognized what was happening to Shen Baiyi. Grabbing a nearby food bag, he held it over Shen Baiyi’s mouth, instructing her to breathe into it.
After nearly half an hour of struggle and several bouts of vomiting, Shen Baiyi finally stabilized.
“Respiratory alkalosis. Avoid letting the patient get emotionally agitated. If it happens again, place a bag over her mouth and nose for her to breathe into. If there’s no bag, cupping her hands in front of her face to breathe into will also work.”
Zheng Yao exhaled wearily. “Got it.”
After administering an IV drip, the doctor left the room. Shen Baiyi’s already pale and sickly complexion now looked even more ghastly.
The incident left Zheng Yao deeply unsettled.
Every time she saw Shen Baiyi’s delicate face, the image of her convulsing flashed through Zheng Yao’s mind, making her hesitant to bring up anything, afraid of triggering another episode.
But then, the police chose this moment to arrive.
At the sight of them, Shen Baiyi, who had been lying down, abruptly sat up, her eyes welling with tears again. “Sister, please don’t abandon me.”
As she spoke, her free hand the one without the IV clutched tightly onto Zheng Yao’s clothes.
Though frustrated, Zheng Yao was genuinely afraid of agitating her further and could only force a stiff reply, “I won’t, I won’t.”
Calling her sister?
Zheng Yao almost wanted to call her sister instead.
But certain things still needed investigation like why Shen Baiyi had come to the city, why she was in such a state despite having received a substantial compensation payout, and most importantly, whether she had actually attended university.
After all, it wasn’t summer break yet. If Shen Baiyi was still enrolled, she needed to return to school as soon as possible.
“Just lie down and rest for now. I’ll talk to them.” Zheng Yao glanced down at Shen Baiyi’s hand still gripping her clothes and felt her patience thinning. “Let go.”
But Shen Baiyi’s face was stubborn, refusing to release her hold.
“…”
Zheng Yao took a deep breath, wanting to lash out, but she couldn’t not with someone like this. After holding it in for a long moment, her face flushed red with suppressed frustration.
This was beyond infuriating!
In the end, she had no choice but to apologize to the officers.
The police seemed to have misunderstood their relationship, assuming they had reported a domestic dispute. They scolded Zheng Yao a few times for obstructing official duties.
Then, taking pity on the pitiful-looking Shen Baiyi, they even lectured Zheng Yao before leaving: “No matter what mistakes she’s made, as her sister, you shouldn’t resort to scolding or hitting her. How can you just say you don’t want her as a sister? You need to educate her properly!”
“…”
Shen Baiyi, at least, tried to defend her: “I made a mistake and upset my sister. It’s not her fault.”
She had fallen down the stairs, hitting the back of her head and splitting her forehead open, requiring several stitches. Though covered with gauze, the struggle had caused fresh blood to seep through, making her look even more pitiful. And her “understanding” attitude only made Zheng Yao seem like the villain.
Zheng Yao closed her eyes briefly, ignoring the officers’ reproachful stares.
She must have been cursed for eight lifetimes.
–
Given Shen Baiyi’s condition, Zheng Yao didn’t dare let her leave the hospital that day.
But the worst part was she couldn’t leave either.
This girl probably had a case of imprinting, the first person she saw upon waking was her, and thanks to Zhu Xiaofu’s misleading words, she had firmly decided that she was her older sister.
Moreover, Shen Baiyi was terrified of being abandoned by her.
The moment Zheng Yao made the slightest move, Shen Baiyi would stare at her intently, her eyes already reddening before Zheng Yao could even speak.
Zheng Yao was fuming inside, but there was nothing she could do.
Didn’t she know exactly what Shen Baiyi’s family situation was like? If there had been any relatives she could rely on, she wouldn’t have had to handle the funeral alone, much less be targeted by the Tan family for the compensation money.
Just one look at her scrawny figure was enough to tell how rough the past year had been for her. If Zheng Yao didn’t step in, no one else would.
Besides…
Zheng Yao gritted her teeth in frustration.
She wanted to wash her hands of this, but she just couldn’t bring herself to be that heartless, ending up dragged around by the other girl instead.
At this thought, Zheng Yao’s expression darkened. Why couldn’t she be as cold and unfeeling as Bai Yuanzhu?
The doctor had said that talking to Shen Baiyi about the past might help restore her memory, but Zheng Yao knew next to nothing about Shen Baiyi’s life. All she could manage now was: “Your name is Shen Baiyi.”
“Is it the ‘Bai’ for ‘white’ and the ‘Yi’ from ‘whether lightly adorned or richly dressed, always fitting’?” Shen Baiyi asked.
Hearing this, Zheng Yao immediately stood up from her chair. “You’ve regained your memory?”
Shen Baiyi shook her head. “No.”
“Stop lying. You can even quote poetry now.” Zheng Yao’s face was expressionless, convinced she was being played by Shen Baiyi.
How could it be such a coincidence that she conveniently lost her memory the moment Zheng Yao showed up?
“I’m not lying.” Shen Baiyi lowered her head, looking listless. “That line just suddenly popped into my head.”
Zheng Yao felt a flicker of hope. “Then try harder. See if anything else comes to mind.”
If Shen Baiyi could remember even a little, Zheng Yao could dust off her hands and leave without a second thought.
With this in mind, she fixed Shen Baiyi with an intense gaze, her face full of expectation. But contrary to her hopes, Shen Baiyi only paled, furrowing her brows as she said, “I can’t remember. My head hurts.”
“…”
Zheng Yao was exasperated. She had a headache too.
Sitting back down, her expression sour, she continued to distance herself: “I’m not your sister. We’re not even friends or relatives.”
At this, she lifted her eyes, staring straight at Shen Baiyi as she said seriously, “If we have to define our relationship, ‘enemies’ might be more accurate.”
Shen Baiyi pressed her lips together, tilting her delicate face up as she tentatively asked, “Did Mom and Dad favor me more?”
Zheng Yao: “…”
Was there any chance they weren’t sisters at all?
Unfortunately, no matter how much Zheng Yao tried to explain later, Shen Baiyi seemed convinced they were blood-related, believing Zheng Yao disliked her solely because their parents had favored her in life.
Zheng Yao was so angry she nearly passed out.
Too bad she was in perfect health she couldn’t faint even if she wanted to. Not only that, but she also had to suppress her temper to avoid sending Shen Baiyi into a frenzy.
Zheng Yao was livid.
But no matter how pitiful Shen Baiyi seemed, when Zheng Yao estimated it was about time, she quietly called for a nurse.
Once the nurse arrived, Zheng Yao gave a few instructions before standing up to leave.
The moment she moved, Shen Baiyi tensed up. “Sister, are you leaving?”
Seeing this, Zheng Yao hardened her expression. “If you dare ask me to stay overnight in the hospital with you, don’t expect me to ever acknowledge you again.”
Her tone was harsh.
Shen Baiyi bit her lip and slowly lowered her head.
The pitiful look made Zheng Yao, who had finally mustered some firmness, soften a bit. She forced herself to maintain a cold tone, “If you need anything, tell the nurse directly. Stay in the hospital and behave.”
“If I behave, will you take me home, sister?” Shen Baiyi asked softly.
Zheng Yao remained expressionless. “Of course.”
Yeah, right.
What home did she and Shen Baiyi even have together? Don’t be ridiculous. It was already more than enough that she had wasted an entire afternoon accompanying Shen Baiyi. Did she really expect Zheng Yao to take her back to her own place?
What a pipe dream.
But Shen Baiyi clearly believed it. She lay back on the hospital bed, small and frail, her face pale, yet still managing to offer Zheng Yao a faint smile. “Then I’ll wait for you, sister.”
It was a familiar shy smile.
Innocent and pure.
Her dark, bright eyes stared straight at Zheng Yao, reflecting her image with an air of complete trust.
Zheng Yao pressed her lips together, uncomfortably avoiding her gaze.
Logically, she knew she had already done more than enough. But emotionally, she couldn’t shake a lingering sense of guilt.
As if she had committed some unforgivable sin. But in reality, there was no difference between her and Zhu Xiaofu, Zhu Xiaofu was just a kind-hearted citizen, and so was she. That was all.
