My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 16
Upon returning home, Bubu was already starving, circling around her feet.
This cat was usually aloof, so it was rare to see it rubbing against her pants leg with such enthusiasm today.
Unfortunately, the little rascal had been shedding recently.
A large patch of cat fur clung to her black pants. Zheng Yao bent down to pick Bubu up, meeting its round, innocent eyes.
What evil intentions could a little kitten possibly have?
Those round eyes were pure and flawless.
Zheng Yao mercilessly scolded, “You little troublemaker.”
The cat was bad, and a certain pitiful someone was bad too.
–
There were only three days left until the deadline, but Zheng Yao was “drowning in debt.” Even with the little she had written during the day, she had to stay up most of the night to churn out seven thousand words.
This was already her limit.
After confirming all the written words were saved, she didn’t even have the energy to wash up. She simply hugged her laptop and fell into a deep sleep.
Normally, after pulling an all-nighter to write, she would sleep until noon.
Unfortunately, the next day, before 9 a.m., Zheng Yao was awakened by her phone ringing.
She couldn’t even open her eyes, struggling for a while before managing to peek through a slit. Glancing at the screen, she saw it was an unknown number.
Without hesitation, she hung up, tossed the phone aside, and went back to sleep. Just as she was drifting off, the phone rang again.
Zheng Yao had a temper when woken up.
Being disturbed again, she was as furious as a little lion, answering the call with irritation: “Hello?!”
Just one word, but it was dripping with anger.
The other end of the line fell silent.
Zheng Yao had no patience. Seeing that the caller wasn’t speaking, she cursed and hung up: “Psycho!”
This time, she muted her phone, trying to return to the arms of Morpheus. Unfortunately, after being disturbed several times, her sleepiness had completely vanished.
After rolling around in bed a few times without being able to fall back asleep, Zheng Yao had no choice but to get up.
Exhausted but unable to sleep, who could understand this pain?
Her head ached, and her eyes stung.
Her entire body felt sore and weak, devoid of energy, filled with nothing but frustration.
Picking up her phone from the floor, she saw that the unknown caller had tried several more times. Zheng Yao ignored it.
Logging into WeChat, she unsurprisingly saw her editor’s reminders about the manuscript.
[Qinghu Culture – Meisheng]: Only two days left, Teacher Guanmu. You do remember that tomorrow is the deadline, right?
Zheng Yao’s pen name was Guanmu. She was a mystery writer with a decent reputation, having sold quite a few copyrights.
Her track record was good she never left stories unfinished but she had a procrastination problem. Even with ample time, she loved waiting until the last few days to pull all-nighters and race against the clock.
Normally, Zheng Yao should have submitted some of the manuscript yesterday, but she had been too exhausted and forgotten about it. Hence, her editor was clearly anxious.
[Guanmu]: Right away.
After replying, Zheng Yao sent over the seven thousand words she had written the night before.
With seven thousand words down, she still had thirty-three thousand to go.
The deadline was 8 a.m. the day after tomorrow, meaning she had to write sixteen thousand five hundred words today.
She wished she were an octopus with endless typing tentacles!
Seething with resentment but unable to ignore her growling stomach, Zheng Yao zombie-walked out of her room.
Bubu was waiting outside the door. Seeing her emerge, it started meowing frantically again.
Zheng Yao had no choice but to change course and feed Bubu first. While the cat was busy eating, she crouched down and aggressively petted it.
There was no helping it, Bubu was a cat that was both temperamental and aloof. Normally, trying to pet it would earn her a beating. Only during mealtime was it docile, completely indifferent to her affectionate assaults.
Like dealing with a little princess, all you could do was coax her.
Stroking Bubu’s soft fur, her mind gradually cleared, and suddenly she remembered there was another little princess still at the hospital.
No idea if she had regained her memory yet.
But whatever the case, it had nothing to do with her. She had manuscripts to finish and wouldn’t waste time on irrelevant people.
With that thought, she got up.
Too lazy to even make breakfast, she hastily settled for a cup of instant noodles, muted her phone again, and finally sat down at her desk to type in peace.
Nothing mattered more than writing.
Sixteen thousand words was too much. At her usual writing speed, ten thousand a day was her absolute limit.
Now, though, the pressure was immense.
Lunch was another cup of instant noodles. By evening, she had managed ten thousand words. Six thousand left she could squeeze those out tonight.
Zheng Yao stretched. Two cups of instant noodles in a day was her limit; she wanted a proper meal for dinner.
Just as she pulled out her phone to order takeout, she saw over twenty missed calls.
Zheng Yao: ???
Most were from the same unknown number from the morning, with a few from Zhu Xiaofu.
Clearly, Shen Baiyi was looking for her.
Without hesitation, she blocked both Zhu Xiaofu’s and the caregiver’s numbers.
She’d already paid the caregiver and covered the medical bills. She’d even transferred five thousand yuan to Shen Baiyi’s account more than enough.
While waiting for the food, Zheng Yao took a quick bath, easing some of the exhaustion. But the moment she stepped out, the doorbell rang abruptly.
That fast?
Surprised, she hurried to open the door, only to find herself face-to-face with several people.
Shen Baiyi stood there in faded clothes, frail and thin, her eyes instantly welling up with tears at the sight of Zheng Yao, looking utterly wronged.
Zhu Xiaofu, supporting her, glared. “You actually abandoned your sister at the hospital!”
Beside them stood the same officer who had lectured her at length the day before.
“…”
Zheng Yao’s eye twitched. She wanted nothing more than to slam the door shut.
But obviously, that wasn’t an option.
The officer broke the silence first, sternly scolding her again. Zheng Yao’s expression darkened, a flash of anger, then an eerie calm. She stepped aside. “Come in. Let me explain the situation.”
Once the officer entered, she held the door, blocking the other two.
“Wait outside.”
With that, she slammed the door shut.
After ushering the officer to a seat, she retrieved her household register and family photo album.
She quickly outlined the situation between her family and Shen Baiyi’s, concluding, “Morally or logically, I have no obligation to take her in.”
The officer frowned. “But given the circumstances, she has nowhere else to go. She’s in an unfamiliar place, lost her memory, and only knows you.”
Zheng Yao pressed her lips together.
So she was supposed to let herself be guilt-tripped?
Zheng Yao refused to be anyone’s moral paragon. Morality? Sorry, she didn’t have any. She was just an unhinged mess with no manners.
After several failed attempts to persuade her, the officer had no choice but to take Shen Baiyi away.
Zhu Xiaofu exploded. “Officer! How can you just leave it at that?!”
Shen Baiyi, already pale, turned even whiter. She looked at Zheng Yao. “Sister, are you really abandoning me?”
“I can’t bear the title of ‘sister’.” Zheng Yao frowned. “I’ve told you, I don’t have a younger sister.”
The next second, Shen Baiyi suddenly rushed forward.
Before Zheng Yao could react, she was knocked back several steps by the impact.
To make matters worse, Shen Baiyi had her arms tightly wrapped around Zheng Yao’s waist. Despite being so petite, her grip was astonishingly strong, squeezing Zheng Yao until she could barely breathe.
“Let go.”
Zheng Yao’s face turned cold, her tone dropping several degrees.
“Shen Baiyi, what are you doing!” Zhu Xiaofu exclaimed in frustration. “If she doesn’t want you, forget it! Come to my house, my mom has always wanted another daughter. I’ll be your sister!”
Shen Baiyi remained silent, only tightening her arms further, as if trying to embed herself into Zheng Yao’s embrace.
This was her sister.
If she wasn’t her sister, then why had she sent her money? Why had she rushed to the hospital immediately after learning Shen Baiyi was injured?
Her grip was so strong that even with the police and Zhu Xiaofu pulling together, they couldn’t pry her away.
Zheng Yao’s temper flared. She tried with all her might to pry Shen Baiyi’s hands from her waist, but after struggling for what felt like forever, Shen Baiyi remained stubbornly locked in place Zheng Yao couldn’t even loosen a single finger.
Taking a deep breath, Zheng Yao was about to explode in anger when suddenly, she felt something scalding against her collarbone.
She froze.
Hot, wet tears were rolling down her collarbone, drop by drop, burning in a way she couldn’t ignore.
