My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 14
The doctor arrived in a hurry and finally concluded that it was a mild concussion, with an injury to the hippocampus at the back of the head, resulting in temporary retrograde amnesia.
“Fortunately, there’s no blood clot in the patient’s brain. The memory loss is only temporary. Just rest well at home, no need to worry too much. It will gradually recover over time.”
Zheng Yao pinched the bridge of her nose. Though it wasn’t her who had hit her head, hers was now throbbing painfully.
The girl was still circling around Shen Baiyi excitedly:
“You really don’t remember anything at all?”
“Oh my god! This is insane! I’ve only seen this kind of plot in TV dramas!”
“What does it feel like to lose your memory? I’m so curious, please share with me!”
Zheng Yao had a headache just listening to her. She grabbed the girl and pulled her away.
The girl flailed wildly. “What are you doing? Let go!”
“Do you know each other?” Zheng Yao released her and asked coldly.
The girl straightened her clothes but shook her head. “Not really.”
“Either you do or you don’t. What do you mean by ‘not really’?” Zheng Yao’s face darkened, her patience wearing dangerously thin.
“Because it’s not really knowing her!” The girl, Zhu Xiaofu, threw up her hands. “I just saw her a few times on my way to school these past days. She was wandering around the streets, and she’s so pretty that I noticed her right away.”
These past days. Wandering the streets.
Zheng Yao quickly pieced together the information. So Shen Baiyi had already been in T City for a few days, likely with nowhere to go, but only contacted her today.
“Today, I couldn’t hold back anymore and asked if she needed help. Then she borrowed my phone to call you.” At this point, Zhu Xiaofu grew indignant again. “And you? Your sister hasn’t come home for days, and when she finally calls you, you just hang up? Do you have any idea how heartbroken she was after you hung up?!”
Hearing this, Shen Baiyi, who had been keeping her head down, flickered her gaze slightly.
“She” seemed to care deeply about her sister.
“I don’t know, and I don’t care to know.” Zheng Yao remained stone-hearted. She turned to Shen Baiyi. “Don’t listen to her nonsense. I’m not your sister, and we don’t really know each other either.”
Not really know each other?
Then why would she come to the hospital to see her?
Shen Baiyi tried hard to recall her past memories. A few fragmented images flashed through her mind, followed by a sharp pain in her head.
She closed her eyes briefly, weighing the pros and cons, and quickly made up her mind. When she looked up again, two lines of tears slid down from her dark, glistening eyes. “Did I do something wrong to make you angry, Sister?”
Zheng Yao: “…”
Seeing her cry, Zhu Xiaofu exploded. She glared furiously at Zheng Yao. “A sister like you isn’t worth acknowledging!”
With that, she took out her phone and demanded bluntly, “Give me your parents’ number. If you don’t want to take care of your sister, fine! I’ll call them and let them handle it!”
Zheng Yao fell silent.
What unfortunate timing both she and Shen Baiyi were orphans.
Zheng Yao’s silence only made Zhu Xiaofu more convinced of her guilt. She smirked triumphantly. “What, cat got your tongue? If you won’t take responsibility, surely your parents will!”
“They really can’t.” Zheng Yao replied expressionlessly, her tone biting. “Both her parents and mine are dead.”
Shen Baiyi, sitting propped up on the hospital bed, stiffened slightly, her fingers unconsciously tightening into fists.
Zhu Xiaofu was completely stunned. After a long pause, she stammered awkwardly, “Oh! I’m sorry, I didn’t know.”
Then she sucked in a sharp breath.
Doesn’t that mean this sister is the eldest in the family? No wonder she dares to be so domineering.
The ward fell silent instantly.
Zheng Yao crossed her arms, waiting to hear what else these two kids would say.
Shen Baiyi lowered her head again.
Her long hair cascaded down, and her bangs had grown so long they nearly covered her eyes completely.
“Then you should be the one to take care of her,” Zhu Xiaofu finally spoke up, still indignant. “She’s still a high school student. If you don’t take responsibility, who will?”
Zheng Yao was taken aback. “Isn’t she in college?”
“What college?!” Zhu Xiaofu rolled her eyes. “What kind of sister are you? You don’t even know what grade your own sister is in!”
She thrust Shen Baiyi’s backpack toward Zheng Yao. “Her bag is full of high school textbooks, and she’s about my age definitely still in high school.”
Zheng Yao unzipped the backpack and glanced inside, her frown deepening immediately.
It was true.
She looked at Shen Baiyi, who was staring blankly at the backpack with a dazed expression, and swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue.
What answers could she possibly get from Shen Baiyi?
This kid couldn’t even remember her own name!
She wanted nothing more than to walk away, but given the circumstances, that wasn’t an option.
Leaving aside whether she could bring herself to abandon the girl, Zhu Xiaofu was watching her like a hawk.
She could only massage her temples in frustration.
What kind of cursed luck was this?
An eerie silence settled over the ward, making the loud growling from Shen Baiyi’s stomach all the more conspicuous.
Shen Baiyi’s face flushed crimson.
“Oh! I almost forgot!” Zhu Xiaofu hurriedly pulled out the takeout meal she’d brought back. “I figured you probably haven’t eaten properly these past few days might even have fainted from hunger. I specifically went out to get this for you. Eat it while it’s hot.”
As the aroma wafted out, Shen Baiyi murmured weakly, “Thank you.”
“No need for thanks. Go ahead and eat.” Zhu Xiaofu placed the food directly in front of her.
Though hungry, Shen Baiyi had little appetite. The smell of the food made her nauseous almost immediately.
She recoiled slightly, her face turning pale as she grimaced.
“What’s wrong?” Zhu Xiaofu asked, puzzled.
Shen Baiyi shook her head gently and began eating small bites from the container.
Outside, dusk was falling. Zheng Yao glanced at Zhu Xiaofu, who showed no signs of leaving, and asked, “Aren’t you going home?”
Zhu Xiaofu planted her hands on her hips. “Are you planning to ditch your sister here as soon as I leave?”
Zheng Yao didn’t bother explaining further, simply waving her off. “Not happening. You should go.”
Still unconvinced, Zhu Xiaofu wrote her phone number on a piece of paper and handed it to Shen Baiyi. “If your sister abandons you again, call me. I’ll stand up for you!”
“Okay,” Shen Baiyi replied obediently. “Thank you.”
Zhu Xiaofu left with frequent backward glances. Zheng Yao stood by the window for a while, watching until Zhu Xiaofu got into a taxi, then turned back to Shen Baiyi.
Shen Baiyi had already lain back down, leaving the food untouched. Her face was deathly pale, like a stray cat frail and pitiful.
After staring at her for a long moment, Zheng Yao took out her phone and decisively called the police.
Seeing this, Shen Baiyi sat up in bed, her dark eyes brimming with tears.
Zheng Yao turned away, avoiding looking at her to prevent herself from softening. Only after hanging up the phone did she turn back to Shen Baiyi. “I’m the only child in my family, so I’m definitely not your sister.”
At this point, she paused subtly, reluctant to bring up the past conflicts between her family and the Shen family. She simply brushed past it and said, “I’ve already called the police for you, and I’ll transfer next month’s money in advance. Just go about your business, and don’t contact me again.”
Finally done speaking, she let out a sigh of relief and looked at Shen Baiyi.
The sight made her freeze.
Shen Baiyi had been crying she didn’t know for how long her face, no bigger than a palm, was streaked with tears. She wept silently, yet with unmistakable sorrow.
It was heartbreaking.
“…”
Zheng Yao fell silent.
The hospital room grew quiet. Shen Baiyi seemed to have turned on a faucet of tears she didn’t speak, just cried uncontrollably, her breath hitching in sobs.
“Stop crying.”
Zheng Yao rubbed her temples, her headache worsening.
Shen Baiyi continued to sob, her breathing growing heavier.
It sounded like she was struggling to breathe.
Suddenly, Zheng Yao sensed something was wrong and hurried forward. “Shen Baiyi?”
