My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 13
As soon as she got home, Zheng Yao threw herself into the bathtub and soaked for hours. Only when she had scrubbed herself nearly raw did she finally feel somewhat relieved. She changed into loungewear and ordered herself some takeout.
It had only been a few days in the village, yet it felt like a lifetime ago.
Stepping onto the scale, she realized she had lost a full three or four pounds.
This wouldn’t do.
Frowning, Zheng Yao drafted a nutrition plan for herself. She spent the next few weeks at home, brewing all kinds of soups. After more than half a month, she finally managed to regain a few pounds, returning to her pre-village weight.
Only then did she let out a sigh of relief.
Days passed one after another. Bai Yuanzhu’s death had little impact on her life, and even the task of sending money to Shen Baiyi regularly had been delegated to someone else, sparing her the trouble.
Gradually, the matters of the Shen family faded from her mind. Just as she thought her life would continue peacefully like this, a phone call suddenly came through, completely disrupting her routine.
“Um… is this Zheng Yao, Miss Zheng?”
A voice both familiar and unfamiliar came through the phone, no longer hoarse as before, but clear and tinged with timidity.
Hearing it unexpectedly, Zheng Yao froze for a moment, her mind instantly conjuring the image of that cool, pine-like figure.
It was Shen Baiyi.
She had thought she’d long forgotten Shen Baiyi entirely. Yet now, nearly a year later, she had recognized her voice in an instant?
Realizing this, Zheng Yao’s brows furrowed.
Within seconds, she replied without batting an eye, “Wrong number.”
Then she immediately hung up.
Damn it, was she being treated like some easy target?
Calculating the time, Shen Baiyi should have finished her college entrance exams by now and be in university, right?
Zheng Yao’s frown deepened, puzzled. Out of the blue, why was she reaching out?
She expected Shen Baiyi to call again, but after waiting for a while, no further calls came.
Did she really believe it was a wrong number? That this wasn’t Zheng Yao’s phone?
At this thought, Zheng Yao’s expression darkened again. After all this time, she still remembered Shen Baiyi’s voice, yet Shen Baiyi had completely forgotten hers.
It felt like she’d lost another round.
Why did it seem like she was the one who couldn’t let go? Realizing this, Zheng Yao grabbed her head and shook it vigorously.
Forget! She had to forget!
She had to purge Shen Baiyi’s voice from her mind.
After busying herself for a while, her phone rang again.
Zheng Yao stiffened.
It wasn’t the same number as before, but still an unfamiliar caller.
Changed numbers to call her?
Zheng Yao sneered and hung up without hesitation. This time, the moment she ended the call, the other party persisted, calling again and again.
After several repetitions, Zheng Yao answered with a scowl, “Shen Baiyi, what the hell do you want?”
The person on the other end was silent for a long moment before speaking. “Is this Ms. Zheng Yao?”
Huh?
Zheng Yao immediately straightened up. “Yes.”
A few minutes later, Zheng Yao left the house with a cold expression. Driving straight to the hospital, she learned from the staff that Shen Baiyi was still undergoing tests.
A kind passerby had brought her in apparently, she had suddenly fainted while walking, tumbling down a flight of stairs and hitting her head, bleeding profusely.
She hadn’t brought much luggage, just a backpack containing some books and a personal information form.
The emergency contact on the form was filled in with her phone number, so when something happened, she was immediately contacted.
Zheng Yao was almost amused by the absurdity.
Nice one, Shen Baiyi. Deliberately pulling a scam on her, huh?
Though she was fuming, the person in question was reportedly still unconscious and undergoing tests. Even if she was burning with anger, there was nowhere to vent it, so she could only wait in frustration.
It was over half an hour later when she finally saw Shen Baiyi.
The girl was still lying on the hospital bed. In Zheng Yao’s memory, Shen Baiyi had been small and thin, pretty as a fairy. A year later, she seemed to have grown a little, looking even more beautiful than before, but her face was even thinner now, and she had tanned considerably.
Her face, already small, now looked as gaunt as a monkey’s.
She hadn’t woken up yet. The doctor said she had hit her head her forehead was wrapped in a bandage and had a concussion. Combined with long-term malnutrition, her body was extremely weak, and low blood sugar couldn’t be ruled out as the cause of her collapse.
Didn’t she have a hefty compensation payout?
How had she ended up in such a wretched state?
Zheng Yao couldn’t bear to look and immediately averted her gaze. Shen Baiyi’s faded backpack was placed nearby, looking familiar, it was the same one she had carried a year ago.
Remembering the form mentioned by the concerned citizen, Zheng Yao stood up, about to go take a look, when the person on the bed suddenly stirred.
She looked down.
Shen Baiyi’s thick, dark lashes fluttered open, revealing black, bright eyes filled with confusion, as if she hadn’t yet grasped the situation.
Pfft!
Zheng Yao sneered again, crossing her arms. “Shen Baiyi, are you some kind of sticky plaster?”
Shen Baiyi seemed to only just realize there was someone else in the room. Her gaze slowly settled on Zheng Yao, filled with obvious wariness and unfamiliarity.
“…”
Zheng Yao’s expression darkened.
Don’t tell me she’s forgotten me?
After a few seconds of staring, as the other’s wariness only grew, Zheng Yao broke the silence first, her expression complicated. “Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten who I am.”
Even though a year had passed, she hadn’t changed that much, had she?
Before Shen Baiyi could respond, a voice came from the doorway. “Are you her sister?”
Zheng Yao turned around. A girl in a school uniform stood at the door, holding a takeout bag.
A student from First High.
Technically, her junior.
Zheng Yao denied it. “I’m not.”
Seeing this, the girl stepped inside, placing the takeout on the table. She looked at Shen Baiyi. “Has your sister not arrived yet?”
Then she took out her phone. “Should I call her for you? Same number as before?”
The next second, Zheng Yao’s phone rang.
The girl turned to look at her, her face showing no surprise clearly, she had already guessed that the number belonged to Zheng Yao.
“Sis, even if you two had a fight, you can’t just ignore her like this!” The girl’s face was full of anger. “She’s been out there for so long. As her guardian, not only did you not care, but when she reached out to reconcile, you ignored her too. And now look, she’s hurt!”
“…”
The girl’s mouth was like a machine gun, firing off a rapid barrage without giving anyone a chance to speak.
Zheng Yao pinched the bridge of her nose, losing patience.
She turned to Shen Baiyi. “Explain.”
Why did she appear in this city?
Why did she end up in such a wretched state?
And most importantly, why did she still reach out to her?
Shen Baiyi, who had remained silent until now, stared straight at her and asked, “Are you, my sister?”
Zheng Yao: ???
Her eyelid twitched violently as she forced out a smile. “Did you hit your head or something?”
Was she really going to play this game?
Shen Baiyi raised a hand to touch the bandages still wrapped around her head and nodded hesitantly. “Yeah.”
Just that slight movement made her dizzy, and her face grew even paler.
Before Zheng Yao could react, the girl dramatically covered her mouth, eyes wide with shock. “Don’t tell me you’ve lost your memory?!”
Zheng Yao: ???
What the hell?
