- My 'White Moonlight' First Love Came Back, but I Don't Love her Anymore
- Chapter 13 - What Is a Qualified Ex? I Don’t Know.
The next morning, Zhou Wanyan was awakened by the ringing of her cell phone. With blurry eyes, half-asleep and half-awake, she answered the call.
On the other end, Gao Yao said exasperatedly, “Wanyan, you need to come over. Your ex won’t let me move anything. She says that if you don’t show up, no one should even think about taking your things. The moving company I called is being blocked right at the door and won’t be let in.”
“Okay, I’ll be there right away,” Zhou Wanyan replied.
After hanging up the phone, Gao Yao looked up and found Yan Jiuqing staring directly at her with resentful eyes. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quietly took a step back.
“What are you doing, Yan Jiuqing? Don’t look at me like that. I’m warning you, Wanyan is coming soon.”
“Who allowed you to call her Wanyan?” Yan Jiuqing said displeasedly.
Gao Yao, wearing high heels, moved slightly toward the door so she could escape quickly if any unexpected situation occurred. She felt truly afraid because she noticed that Yan Jiuqing’s mental state seemed unstable.
“Why can’t I call her that? Wanyan doesn’t belong to you alone. Besides, you two have broken up. From what position are you even saying this?”
Upon hearing this, Yan Jiuqing remained stubborn. “You’re just not allowed to!”
Gao Yao was about to retort with sarcasm, but when she caught a glimpse of Yan Jiuqing’s bloodshot eyes, she swallowed her words. Why bother arguing with someone who just went through a breakup? She thought she should find a good day to celebrate with Wanyan instead, as she had finally escaped this sea of bitterness.
“Fine, if it’s not allowed, it’s not allowed. Regardless, you’ve broken up, and Wanyan’s things are definitely being moved out. You won’t let me move them, but when Wanyan arrives, are you going to stop her too?”
Yan Jiuqing slowly lowered her head. Her hair was messy, and dark shadows covered her eyes. She was still wearing yesterday’s makeup, looking utterly dejected.
Wanyan had seen that text message last night, but Yan Jiuqing subconsciously believed that as long as she pretended not to see it, there was still room for maneuver between them.
“I can’t. I just want to see her again.”
“You didn’t cherish her before, and now you’re acting affectionate after the breakup,” Gao Yao muttered grumpily under her breath.
Even though there were only two of them in the room and her voice was low, Yan Jiuqing heard her clearly.
“I’m sorry.”
A look of astonishment flashed across Gao Yao’s face. Was this the same person who used to look at her with cold eyes? “You,” she began, but stopped.
“Are you and Wanyan high school classmates?” Yan Jiuqing asked first.
Gao Yao replied, “Yeah, Wanyan and I were the closest. Wait, that’s not right.” Back then, Zhou Wanyan and Luo Yuening were the closest.
“What’s not right?” Yan Jiuqing looked at her with an investigative gaze. “The person Wanyan was closest to wasn’t you, but Luo Yuening, right?”
Gao Yao figured that since the two had already broken up, saying this wouldn’t cause trouble for Zhou Wanyan. Besides, there was no ambiguous relationship between Luo Yuening and Zhou Wanyan anyway.
“Smart. You’re right.”
Crash!
Seeing this, Gao Yao kept backing up until her back hit the wall and the cold sensation stopped her. On the wine rack, expensive red wine had shattered all over the floor. The dark red liquid spread to the edge of Gao Yao’s shoes, and the scattered glass fragments shimmered with a cold light.
Yan Jiuqing crouched on the ground in pain, her eyes filled with resentment. Her sweet voice was now tainted with a chilling coldness. “Luo Yuening again. After all these years, she’s truly haunting.”
It was as if her long-suppressed anger had suddenly found an outlet to vent. She pushed all her unhappiness onto that name. Hearing Yan Jiuqing’s words, Gao Yao became dissatisfied. Zhou Wanyan was her friend, but Luo Yuening was also her friend. Speaking ill of her friend in front of her was unacceptable.
Gao Yao took a step forward, crossing her arms over her chest. Her gaze sharpened as she said unhappily, “The one who is haunting is you! You’ve already broken up, so why do you still want to see Wanyan?”
Yan Jiuqing refused to back down. “You’re just Wanyan’s high school classmate. What right do you have to interfere in Wanyan’s private affairs? Does it have anything to do with you whether I see her or not?”
Gao Yao’s expression darkened. She was truly angry now. She also wondered how Zhou Wanyan had ever put up with her.
“Well, Wanyan would have to actually want to see you. Why do you think she asked me to come? It’s because she doesn’t want to see you! Yan Jiuqing, as a friend, I shouldn’t say much, but don’t take it too far. Since you’ve already broken up, please be a qualified ex.”
Yan Jiuqing repeated, “A qualified ex? What is a qualified ex?” Then, a faint, chilling smile curled at the corners of her mouth, like a flower growing in a damp, dark place. Her voice carried a hint of provocation. “I don’t know.”
Why should Zhou Wanyan be able to walk away clean while she was left here alone?
A click came from the door lock, breaking the standoff between the two. Zhou Wanyan’s appearance drew both their gazes. Yan Jiuqing stepped forward with a smile, but when she saw someone following behind Zhou Wanyan, she froze. A flash of panic flickered in her eyes.
“Du Shangwei, why are you here?”
Zhou Wanyan stepped aside and moved toward Gao Yao. After exchanging a look with her, she moved to pack her things. Yan Jiuqing didn’t have time to listen to Du Shangwei’s answer. Seeing the situation, she immediately stepped forward to stop Zhou Wanyan, saying pitifully, “Wanyan, is there really no chance for us anymore?”
“Of course there’s no chance,” Du Shangwei spoke up first. She walked over to Yan Jiuqing and put an arm around her shoulder, asserting her dominance. “Qingqing, didn’t you promise me last night that you would come back to me? I am your girlfriend now.”
Zhou Wanyan’s brow furrowed, as if she had heard something disgusting. The scenes from last night resurfaced. Yan Jiuqing felt as if a lifetime had passed. If it weren’t for Du Shangwei’s reminder, she would still be thinking that things hadn’t ended with Zhou Wanyan.
The emotion that was about to break through the cocoon in her heart was pressed back down deep. She decided that the one she should love was Du Shangwei. She felt heartache for her. For Zhou Wanyan, she was just used to the feeling of having her around. Leaving her was no big deal.
Thinking this, Yan Jiuqing lost her strength and stopped interfering. Instead, she leaned into Du Shangwei’s arms and watched Zhou Wanyan pack her things with a blank expression. Du Shangwei glanced provocatively at Zhou Wanyan, as if telling her she had won, wearing the look of a victor.
Gao Yao couldn’t stand it. This was a seamless transition. What was with that “deep affection” act just now? Gao Yao sneered, “Yan Jiuqing, you broke up last night and got a new partner last night. You were quite busy, weren’t you?”
Zhou Wanyan didn’t stop her movements. After quickly tidying up, the moving company came in and took the items away, neat and tidy.
Yan Jiuqing asked, “What does it have to do with you?”
Gao Yao replied, “It has nothing to do with me. I just simply can’t stand what you’re doing. You want everything, but in the end, you won’t be able to keep a single person.”
These words seemed to hit Yan Jiuqing’s sore spot. Her gaze turned cold, and the suppressed anger within her seemed ready to explode at any moment. “What nonsense are you talking about!”
“Enough.” Zhou Wanyan’s voice was gentle, yet it carried a trace of coldness, like winter sunlight: warm, yet biting.
The expression on Yan Jiuqing’s face froze in disbelief. The corners of her eyes turned red, and she said aggrievedly, “You’re snapping at me?”
At this moment, Yan Jiuqing didn’t realize that the Zhou Wanyan who once loved her with all her heart and put her first was no longer there. Zhou Wanyan shielded Gao Yao behind her and continued, “Yan Jiuqing, congratulations on regaining your true love. Cherish it well, and don’t get lost again.”
Then she whispered, “Gao Yao, let’s go.”
Zhou Wanyan’s tone was perfunctory, carrying a hint of irony she didn’t bother to hide. Everyone present understood the implication of her words. Gao Yao swayed her hips slightly and naturally tucked her arm into Zhou Wanyan’s. She intentionally raised her voice, saying coquettishly, “Okay, Wanyan, let’s go. Can I go to your house?”
Zhou Wanyan cooperated. “Sure, let’s go home.”
Then, under Yan Jiuqing’s stormy gaze, the two walked away intimately, arm in arm. Why did it turn out like this? Zhou Wanyan, you will regret this.
Inside the Porsche, Gao Yao vividly described the scene before Zhou Wanyan had arrived. It was impossible for Zhou Wanyan to feel nothing, but Yan Jiuqing’s seamless transition into a new relationship had hit her breaking point. It was as if the beautiful memories of their past were now covered in a layer of darkness.
“Gao Yao, thank you for today.”
“Why are you thanking me? Treat me to dinner tomorrow. A new restaurant just opened on Huaxi Street.”
“Okay, whatever you say.”
“Now you can be considered to have escaped the sea of bitterness and returned to being single,” Gao Yao lamented. Then, as if remembering something, Gao Yao’s eyebrows arched slightly, and a plan formed. Now that she was single, wasn’t there an opportunity? She thought to herself that her good sister should know she always thinks of her when something good comes up.
Gao Yao continued, “We should celebrate. I’ll call a few friends, and we’ll go to Shangxitang to drink and chat. How about it?”
Zhou Wanyan looked calmly at the road ahead, her emotions unreadable. “Sure. We haven’t had a good talk since you returned to the country. By the way, is there anything going on with you from abroad?”
“What could be going on?” Gao Yao’s eyes darted away.
Zhou Wanyan noticed the flash of nervousness and smiled without saying a word. As night fell, the city’s silhouette was outlined by neon lights.
Shangxitang.
Pushing open the heavy door of the private booth, the first thing that met the eye was a huge coffee table covered with rare foreign wines. The dim lighting added a sense of mystery. On the large leather sofa, Zhou Wanyan was surrounded. Gao Yao sat on her right, and the friend Gao Yao had mentioned sat close to her left.
“Hey, hey, don’t scare Wanyan. She’s introverted and blushes easily.”
“I like the ones who blush easily!”
“Ren Li! Tone it down.”
“Don’t worry about it, Gao Yao. Wanyan hasn’t said anything yet.”
Ren Li looked up and gazed at Zhou Wanyan with a beaming smile. Her phoenix-shaped eyes were flowing with charm and allure. After saying that, Ren Li intentionally leaned closer to Zhou Wanyan, her shoulder brushing against Zhou Wanyan’s body.
Zhou Wanyan froze in place, not daring to move, and looked toward Gao Yao with a plea for help. Gao Yao gave a slight shrug, indicating she was helpless too. It wasn’t that she wouldn’t save Zhou Wanyan; it was that she truly couldn’t. This Ren Li was usually quite eccentric. She clearly hadn’t invited her, and she didn’t know who had told her to come.
