My Weekend Lover Turned Out To Be My Boss - Chapter 92
Chapter 92: Villain F · “Realization”
How I wished time would slow down, allowing Phoebe to lean on my shoulder just a little longer. We sat in a tacit understanding, enjoying this brief moment of peace. She kept talking, as if wanting to say everything she had previously kept bottled up when she was “sparing with her words.” I listened in silence, tucking every word away in my heart.
Finally, she wrapped her arms around my neck, buried her head in my chest, and said firmly, word by word: “No matter where you go or what you do in the future—whether you are my enemy or we owe each other nothing—give me a chance. This time, I will be the streetlamp. Just as you once said: I will stand in place, always in place, waiting for you to come home.”
Her voice was trembling, and my heart trembled with it. I held her shoulders and stared intently into her eyes; my reflection was mirrored in those moist orbs. Unfortunately, the sound of the nurse’s footsteps grew closer, and she was forced to let go. I found myself muttering under my breath: “Streetlamp… streetlamp…”
…
Leaving the hospital in a hurry, I took a taxi back to my residential complex to retrieve my car. I quickly changed back into my original clothes. Checking the time, it was 9:34 PM—perfect, neither too late nor too early. I lit a cigarette and leaned against the car window, staring blankly at the narrow patch of sky above the complex. My mind was filled with the image of Phoebe’s sickly, fragile appearance.
I hadn’t quite adjusted to her change. I could feel her gradually grinding down her sharp edges. I wasn’t sure if this was a good thing, but it was certainly better than being obstinate. No matter how stubborn I acted now, seeing the tears swirling in her eyes still made my throat tighten with a painful lump.
“If you want to see that last streetlamp on the way home, do you know what you have to do?” I asked myself. I flicked away the cigarette butt, started the car, and drove toward the Guan residence.
When I walked into the living room near ten o’clock, Guan Shuyun was nowhere to be seen. Only the butler was tidying the coffee table. Seeing me, he said quickly, “The Boss is waiting for you in the downstairs dining room. Go on down.”
“The dining room?”
“She said eating alone is too boring and insisted on waiting for you to come home. Go eat, quickly.”
“Okay, thank you.”
I walked briskly toward the downstairs dining room. Just as I reached the door, I heard Guan Shuyun’s voice on the phone. I deliberately leaned against the door to hear what she was discussing.
“What? You want to withdraw your shares… I don’t understand your point…”
“When I designed the plan to have Lan Feiyi co-found the company with me, you were the one clamoring to invest. I went along with your wishes, and now you want to pull out just like that? You’re being far too naive. What kind of ‘potion’ has Li Shuhua given you? You can only believe half of what she says—why won’t you listen to my advice?”
“Buying Lan Group shares? How innocent. Through what channel would you even buy them… Lan Feichun wants to sell his portion? Fine. Even if you buy them, what effect would it have? Feichun holds less than ten percent…”
During a pause in her conversation, I pushed the door open, pretending to be in high spirits, and shouted: “I’m back!”
Guan Shuyun was startled; her phone actually slipped onto the dining table. I stared at her blankly, and she stared back. Finally, she picked up her phone and said coldly into it: “I’m only warning you once: consider this carefully. When you get cheated, don’t come crying to me for help!”
I stood to the side, clasping my hands and playing the “good girl.” “Uh… you were on the phone. I didn’t know…”
“It’s fine. Qiao Xin is acting up again; I’m tired of dealing with her. Did you eat dinner at the office?”
“I didn’t! Oh no! I forgot something!!!”
Seeing my sudden look of distress, Guan Shuyun stood up with a smile and walked toward me. “What is it? What has you so worried?”
“I! FORGOT! TO! CLOCK! OUT! I worked all that overtime for nothing!!!”
My frustrated tone made Guan Shuyun giggle behind her hand. She then summoned a servant to heat up the dinner. We sat back down at the table, and Guan Shuyun let out a sigh. “You Feifan.”
I looked up at her while snacking on some fruit. “Hmm?”
“Have you considered it?”
Puzzled by the vague question, I shook my head. “Considered what?”
“How long are you going to play dumb? Do I really have to formally pursue you?”
The apple I had been biting into fell onto the table and rolled a few times. I stared at her with wide, vacant eyes. “Huh???”
Guan Shuyun slapped the table and exclaimed, “You! Are you missing a nerve or just missing a heart? I… are you trying to infuriate me to death!”
“Please, a person like me isn’t fit for a relationship. I’m actually terrified of dating right now. Are you blind? How could you have a ‘taste’ for someone like me! Eww—”
Seeing that I was still joking, Guan Shuyun’s face darkened. We sat there staring at each other until the steaming food was served. I turned away, picked up a bowl to serve her some soup, and advised her kindly: “Don’t think about it. You’re not short on women; you could have people flocking to you with a snap of your fingers. You don’t need me.”
Guan Shuyun slapped the table again. “Do you have to bring up exactly what shouldn’t be mentioned?!”
“Did I say something wrong? Besides, I have to look out for myself. What if you’re just a ‘playette’ and you’re just messing around? I’d be at a huge disadvantage. No thanks!”
“You!”
“Me, me, me! What about me! Infuriate you to death!”
“You Feifan!”
Driven to wits’ end by my teasing, Guan Shuyun reached out and pinched my cheek hard, refusing to let go. I slapped my leg in pain and yelled, “Ah!!! Ow, ow, ow!!! Let go! Ow! You’re squeezing harder! Are you a monster?”
“A monster? I think ‘your nemesis’ is a more fitting description!”
I clutched my face, tears of pain welling in my eyes. Guan Shuyun looked at my aggrieved expression, looking very satisfied as she took the bowl from in front of me and sipped the soup. She looked content. “Busy with work by day, bullying you by night… life is actually quite beautiful~”
…
Back in my room, I pulled out my phone to check Old A’s webpage. Many updates had been posted. Lately, Qiao Xin had been sticking close to Lan Feichun. Feichun had a batch of counterfeit imported goods he was desperate to sell, and he wanted to use Qiao Xin’s new company as a channel. Knowing Qiao Xin coveted his Lan Group shares, he had begun publicly claiming he would sell his entire stake.
Combined with Guan Shuyun’s phone call earlier, it seemed this was true. Another surprising update: Li Shuhua had personally approached Feijun, hoping he would sell his Lan Group shares to his older brother. They were willing to buy at a price higher than the market close, but Feijun had naturally refused.
After reading through the updates, Old A had included a paragraph of analysis: ‘Qiao Xin’s trading company is currently negotiating a partnership with Beisheng International. Lan Feiyi hasn’t moved to stop it, likely because she feels she has to take this step to save Beisheng. I haven’t yet tracked the source of Lan Feichun’s goods. Once I have the evidence, Feichun and Qiao Xin will likely face multiple lawsuits.
Furthermore, the relationship between Guan Shuyun and Qiao Xin is strained—likely because of you, Qiao Xin is deliberately distancing herself from Guan. From the big picture, it’s almost time to ‘close the net’ on Guan Shuyun’s side, but don’t act recklessly until we are certain!’
I lit a cigarette, pondering what Old A meant by “closing the net.” Suddenly, a call from an unknown number interrupted my thoughts. Upon answering, the voice spoke quickly: “Feifan, if you needed our help, why did you go such a long way around?”
It was Sister Hong. She laughed on the other end and continued: “Tell us, what do you need the ‘sisters’ to do?”
I didn’t want to waste words and spoke directly: “It seems someone has already contacted you. Sister Hong, I need you to get to know someone.”
“Lan Feichun? We’ve already seen his file. The circle is small; we’ve heard of him more or less. He has a triad background, but luckily we know some people too. Getting close to him won’t be hard.”
“I was just afraid you’d run into trouble, so I hesitated.”
“We’re veterans of the entertainment scene; handling a man isn’t difficult. Don’t worry about the rest. Tell us, what information do you want?”
“Get to know him and earn his trust first. That’s step one. We’ll take the rest slowly.”
“Fine, wait for our good news. And take back that 500,000 deposit. This one’s on the house. Just remember to come to our salon for a hair and beauty treatment sometime~”
“Please, keep the money.”
“A Lian and I will naturally demand a hefty ‘fee’ from that man. In prison, we only survived because you looked after us. We need to pay back that debt properly.”
Perhaps those who live on the edge value loyalty above all; Sister Hong and Sister Lian certainly had that aura. Still, it was a risky move. I feared they might succumb to the temptation of money and betray me. But to get evidence of the dealings between Lan Feichun and Qiao Xin in the shortest time possible, relying on Old A alone wasn’t enough. After all, for Old A, the enemies are in the light while he is in the shadows.
I had to have spies by Lan Feichun’s side so I could strike from both directions later. After considering that, I went back to thinking about “closing the net” on Guan Shuyun. But… I felt a twinge of reluctance regarding her. It seemed I was still too kind-hearted.
I could easily contact Duo Ran now and explain the Guan Corporation’s situation. If she and Phoebe spoke up, Guan’s capital chain would paralyze instantly.
But how could I avenge Guan Shuyun’s role in separating me from Phoebe, while ensuring the Guan Corporation doesn’t lose too much, and settling her grudges with Qiu Qi and He Mu all at once? The connections between these things were so contradictory that my head throbbed! But if it’s a problem, there must be a way to solve it.
One thing was clear: I had to make Guan Shuyun face her past with Guan Qinyun. I decided to drop the plan of having Yu Xiao incite Qiu Qi and He Mu for revenge. Instead, I would bring them and Guan Shuyun together. If they didn’t clear the air face-to-face, that hatred would never dissolve. It seemed I needed a better plan. For now, I’d just focus on living a few days of “happy” life!
