Chapter 93: Villain G · “Song of Departure”
The heavy rains of early June were accompanied by thunder and lightning, but the evening breeze was refreshing and perfect for sleep. I’ve always liked running outside after the rain stops to smell the earth. Phoebe used to say this hobby of mine was “unique”; occasionally, when the weather was like this, she would accompany me as I wandered aimlessly through the garden.
The garden of the Guan residence had recently been professionally landscaped, so every flower and blade of grass beneath my feet felt new. Listening to the insects chirping under the dim glow of the streetlamps, I strolled along the small stone path with a cigarette between my lips. In the dead of night, I walked with only my shadow for company. Fortunately, I am a person who has adapted to solitude.
“What are you doing wandering around out here in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?”
The sudden voice behind me startled me so much I dropped my cigarette. I leaned over to pick it up, flicked off the dust, and put it back in my mouth, looking at Guan Shuyun with annoyance. “Are you part cat? You walk without making a sound… I couldn’t sleep, so I came out for a walk~”
Guan Shuyun playfully flicked my nose and took the cigarette from my mouth. “That just shows we’re truly destined for each other~”
I pretended to ignore her and turned to head back inside. Guan Shuyun wasn’t pleased; she quickly grabbed my sleeve and pressed, “Hey, hey, hey! Where are you going?”
“Back to sleep.”
“I thought you couldn’t sleep?”
“Now that I’ve seen you, I can sleep.”
“You! You Feifan, have I spoiled you because my temper is too good?”
I looked at her as she postured to throw a tantrum and felt helpless. I’ve spent my time surrounded by successful women, but Guan Shuyun’s “composure” seemed to have been eaten by a dog; she was always acting so unrefined around me. I tilted my head and looked at her. “Then you tell me—what are you doing out here at three in the morning?”
Under my gaze, Guan Shuyun grew a bit flustered. She hurriedly looked away and muttered to herself, “I already slept once, but I woke up from a nightmare. I just came out to catch some air.”
“A nightmare? You’re carefree all day long; where would a nightmare come from?”
I asked knowingly with a teasing smile. Guan Shuyun thought I would comfort her, so when she heard my response, she immediately glared at me, puffed up with anger. “All you know how to do… all you know… all you know is how to bully me!”
“What are you doing? What are you doing? Talk properly—why are you getting physical!”
She reached out to pinch my face. Having learned my lesson, I started dodging the moment she moved her hand. As our bickering escalated, the two of us began a game of cat-and-mouse in the garden. Guan Shuyun eventually ran out of breath and leaned against her waist. “Time out… half-time break…”
I was also panting and laughing. “Hahaha… go on then… wait for me a second…”
I ran into the house, grabbed two bottles of drinks, and rushed back to Guan Shuyun. I offered her a handful of tissues I’d grabbed, saying in a high-pitched, mock-servant voice: “Your Highness, is there anything else you require? This lowly one shall go prepare it at once~”
Guan Shuyun laughed as she took a tissue to wipe her sweat, playing along. “Little Fan-zi, open the water for me.”
“As you command~”
I opened the bottle for her and smiled. “Tell me, then—what kind of nightmare was it?”
The hand Guan Shuyun used to take the bottle paused, and the smile on her lips slowly faded. “I dreamed of Qinyun.”
“Then you must miss your sister.”
She took a sip of her drink, and we walked to the garden umbrella for a rest. Guan Shuyun pointed to a patch of open ground in front of us. “A long time ago, I loved playing in the garden too, because back then Qinyun would accompany me. We’d hide in the corners to steal ice cream. The servants couldn’t find us anywhere in the house; they’d wander the yard frantically calling our names. That hide-and-seek trick never failed.”
I toyed with the water bottle in my hand and asked boldly, “So… for not saving her… do you regret it?”
Perhaps Guan Shuyun had truly lowered her guard around me. Hearing my question, she no longer dodged. However, the look of panic on her face was painful to see. She lowered her eyes, staring at her fingers with a melancholy smile. “When I got the news that she had passed away, I was sitting right here. Do you think I regret it? But she was stubborn to the very end. The only one who didn’t regret it… was her.”
“I can’t understand. Just how much resentment had to pile up for you to be that resolute? I can almost feel her despair—it must have been greater than her pain when you refused her.”
At my words, Guan Shuyun burst into a laugh, but as she laughed, the tone changed. It became fragile. She stared into the distance, reminiscing about a past unknown to others:
“Since I was a child, high expectations were placed on me. Everyone looked at me as if they were looking at money. Only Qinyun was different. She didn’t fight for anything; she let me have everything. I knew the truth about my sister’s birth, so I often considered her feelings. If I had good food, she had good food. If I had new clothes, she had new clothes. We read fairy tales together, and when we got to Cinderella, I’d hug her and tell her there would be no Cinderellas in our house. We both share the name Guan; our fates would be the same.
But do you know? When our parents suddenly passed away, the massive family business that outsiders envied became a heavy burden to me. How could I, a girl fresh out of school, carry it? A pack of old foxes were eyeing the Guan Corporation. I needed Qinyun. She was better suited for the Chairman’s seat than I was. So many people wanted that power, but she just didn’t want it. For the sake of freedom and to avoid responsibility, she ran away from me to live her own peaceful life.
The happiness built on money is just a superficial layer that others see. The wealthier I am, the heavier my pressure. I used to be kind, but this circle—this world—doesn’t need kind people. In other words, as you said: we were all lambs, but we were surrounded by wolves.
How could I not hate her? She clearly loved me so much, so how could she just leave? How could she not come back to help me… the Guan family line is thin; when one leaves, there’s one fewer. I really regret it. When the medical reports came out and I saw how high the compatibility was, I was secretly happy. I just wanted to scare her a little… but she refused me. For that Qiu Qi, she didn’t even want her life. I was so full of hate and anger… but now, I truly regret it…”
This was the first time I had ever seen Guan Shuyun with her armor completely removed, looking so agonized. Her sobs were drowned out by the night wind. I reached out to rest my hand on her shoulder for comfort, but she took the opportunity to throw her arms around me. I froze for a second, then hugged her back. “I once said everyone must be responsible for their own actions. She is gone, and you are in pain—that is cause and effect. But it’s not a reason to let yourself fall into ruin. The fact that Qinyun didn’t come back became the motivation for you to grow strong. There is always a good side to things.”
…
And so, one day half a month later, things happened very suddenly. That day, Guan Shuyun was very abnormal. She didn’t invite me for breakfast, and she didn’t urge me to come home early at the end of the workday. These small things had become her habits toward me, and the sudden silence was unsettling.
Probably a business social event, I thought dismissively as I continued my work. But a phone call from Yu Xiao finally shattered the peace.
I tilted my head to pin the phone against my shoulder, typing at my computer as I answered casually, “Hello?”
“Feifan, where are you?”
Yu Xiao’s voice sounded frantic. This was not her normal state. I picked up the phone and walked to the window. “I’m working overtime at the office. Why are you in such a panic?”
“Something happened…”
“What happened? To whom? Don’t rush, speak slowly.”
“I sent a real-time location to your WeChat. You must come immediately!”
“You still haven’t said what’s going on!”
“He Mu and Qiu Qi have kidnapped Guan Shuyun!!!”
“Are you there?”
“Old A had nothing to do these past few days, so he decided to help keep an eye on Qiu Qi. He happened to stumble upon this. Didn’t you see his webpage update? I just rushed over; it’s not suitable for me to show my face!”
“I’ve been too busy today to even look at my phone. I’m coming right now!”
…
Are these people crazy?! I followed the navigation and sped all the way. By the time I arrived, the sunset was casting a bloody red glow over the earth. It was a deserted, unfinished building surrounded by overgrown weeds. It wasn’t tall—maybe six or seven floors. Because it had been abandoned for so long, whatever happened inside wouldn’t be easily discovered.
Seeing my car arrive, Yu Xiao hurried out of her own vehicle. She waved at me. I parked and asked hurriedly, “Where is she?”
“Not this building, the one behind it. I’m not sure which floor exactly. I didn’t dare get too close, so I could only hide here.”
“I have to go up. It’s not convenient for you to show your face, so call Jian Yumeng for help. Doesn’t she have plenty of men? Get a few over here!”
“I’ve already notified her, but they haven’t arrived yet!”
“Then stay here and don’t move. I’ll go up and handle it.”
As I prepared to leave, Yu Xiao grabbed my arm. “Wait!”
“What?”
She opened her trunk, where there was a toolkit. After rummaging for a while, she pulled out a knife. “Don’t use it unless absolutely necessary, but you should have it for self-defense.”
I weighed the knife and smiled. “Thanks!”
After a few steps, Yu Xiao called out again. “Feifan!”
“Yeah?”
“Saving her is important, but don’t do anything stupid!”
“Don’t worry. I’m not the impulsive person I used to be.”
As I stepped into the unfinished building, a wave of cold air hit me, making me shiver. The eerie, gloomy atmosphere made my nerves tingle. I tucked the knife into my waistband. After a quick sweep of the first floor and finding no one, I headed upstairs. To avoid alerting them, I walked extremely slowly.
When I reached the fifth floor, I heard faint noises from above. If I guessed correctly, they were on the top floor. I held my breath and tiptoed to the rooftop. Having explored the layout of the first floor, I knew the general shape of the building. I leaned against a wall and heard He Mu’s voice: “Since You Feifan and Lan Feiyi refused to help us, we have to do it ourselves.”
“You dare kidnap me? What exactly do you want from me? Money or power?”
Guan Shuyun’s confident voice made me breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed He Mu and Qiu Qi hadn’t been violent with her yet.
