Chapter 91: Villain E · “Let Me Catch a Plane That Will Explode”
“I have to work overtime today, don’t wait for me for dinner.”
Guan Shuyun had called saying she asked the kitchen to prepare my favorite dishes. With a mountain of unfinished work on my desk, I could only speak with helpless exhaustion. I still hadn’t figured out a counter-strategy for her constant, opportunistic shows of affection.
“Fine. Work is important, but don’t stay too late. Anything you can’t finish in a day won’t necessarily get done even if you pull an all-night—and the quality would suffer anyway.”
“Understood.”
I hung up and checked the time: 6:13 PM. Without hesitation, I dialed Yu Xiao’s number.
“We just talked yesterday, do you miss me again already? As your exclusive NPC, dear Player, I have no new messages for you today. If there’s an update, I’ll notify you immediately.”
I didn’t care for her dry humor and asked bluntly, “Which hospital is she in?”
Hearing my words, Yu Xiao’s voice turned somber. “Are you planning to take a risk? I advise you not to go. It’s really inappropriate. What if the media catches you? What if Guan Shuyun or Qiao Xin has someone tailing you? Everyone saw you break off with Phoebe completely. What does it mean if you show up now? You’ll blow your cover.”
“Tell me the specific ward.”
I stood my ground. Seeing no other way, Yu Xiao reluctantly answered, “The First Affiliated Hospital… take care of yourself.”
I tossed my phone aside and tried to continue working, but I was completely distracted. Finally, I sighed and stared out the window at the city lights flickering to life. Go. If you want to go, just go… I began to calculate: the Guan residence was about ten minutes from my house, and my house was ten minutes from the hospital. To avoid detection, there was only one way: I had to go home first.
At 7:20 PM, I took a selfie at my desk and sent it to Guan Shuyun with a teasing caption: “Boss! For such a hardworking and progressive employee, won’t you consider a raise and a bonus?”
Guan Shuyun replied almost instantly: “If you worked this hard every day, I’d naturally take notice. But you’re a special case—if you finished on time and came home early, I’d actually consider that raise more. Stop playing on your phone and get back to work!”
What terrifying possessiveness. I immediately cleared my desk and slipped out of the company without clocking out. I sped home, changed my clothes, and stuffed my work outfit into a bag. Donning a hat and a mask, I left in a hurry, choosing to hail a taxi instead of driving.
I checked the time: 8:03 PM. I let out a breath. “Driver, to the First Affiliated Hospital.”
Luckily, the evening rush had passed, and the roads were clear. We arrived in less than ten minutes. I bought a bouquet of roses at a florist outside. When the owner heard I was visiting a patient, his hands paused while wrapping the flowers. He teased, “You’re unique. Others send carnations or lilies… but you send roses.”
I just smiled, took the roses, paid, and left. I felt a slight pang of regret; walking through a hospital with bright red flowers was bound to draw attention. A tactical error! I quickly found the inpatient department Yu Xiao had mentioned. After some searching, I stood outside the ward. Likely wanting privacy, Phoebe was in a single room. I peered through the glass in the door.
A large bag of milky-white fluid—likely nutritional supplements—was hanging from Phoebe’s hand. She was awake, wearing oversized hospital scrubs. She had thinned down so much I barely recognized her. She was just staring blankly out the window, her head tilted to the side.
Ensuring there was no one else in the room, I pushed the door open. Phoebe slowly turned her head at the sound. We stared at each other in silence. She didn’t try to drive me away; she just didn’t say a word. I placed the flowers on the bedside table and took a stool next to her.
“Are you feeling better?”
Phoebe pursed her lips and gave me a faint smile. “It’s nothing serious. I’ll be fine after a few days of IVs.”
Her voice was raspy, and the aura of a powerful queen seemed to have vanished, replaced by visible exhaustion. I reached out and took her left hand, murmuring a reproach, “Don’t punish yourself like this.”
She was too thin. Despite the pleasant weather, her hand was ice-cold. She squeezed my hand back, pressing the back of it against her cheek. She closed her eyes with a look of peace. “You’re worried about me.”
I didn’t pull away. Instead, I stroked her cheek. The sharply defined hollows of her face made my heart ache. I leaned in and couldn’t help but kiss her forehead. “Promise me, take care of yourself. You used to say you carried too much—all those employees at the Lan Group, all those families, and Qingfan. You are the pillar; you can’t collapse.”
Phoebe stared at me sorrowfully. She reached out to hook the necklace around my neck, then grabbed my hand. She frantically searched for the ring. I understood and spread my fingers for her to see. “I’m always wearing it. I won’t take it off.”
Her fingers traced the ring back and forth. Tears began to fall in heavy streaks, but she suddenly let out a complex, tearful laugh. “You’re out there fighting alone right now. This thing is important. Don’t lose it.”
“I’ll be careful.”
She lowered her eyes and whispered, “Can you hold me?”
I silently opened my arms and pulled her into my embrace, burying my face in her neck to smell the long-lost scent of her hair. Feeling the warmth of her thin body, my heart trembled. But in the next moment, I looked up at the white wall, my expression hardening. My voice turned cold. “It’s late. I have to go.”
Before our embrace could even grow warm, I let go and sat back on the stool. Sick people are always fragile; even the powerful Phoebe was throwing a child-like tantrum. She grabbed my hand, a flicker of panic in her eyes. I knew she didn’t want me to leave. No matter how many harsh things she had said, a part of her heart always remained tender for me.
“Look at me, coming here empty-handed. Do you have a pen? I’ll give you a gift.”
Phoebe pointed to the designer bag on the table. “There’s one in there.”
I opened the bag with practiced ease and immediately saw the old fountain pen. I couldn’t help but sigh. “You actually went back and retrieved the pen.”
Phoebe looked aggrieved, watching me like a wounded puppy. “I never care about the price of your gifts. As long as it’s from you, I cherish it. When you threw that pen in the trash that time, I was truly furious.”
I found a medicine box on the nightstand and used the pen to write a string of numbers on it. Phoebe took the box and looked at me in confusion. “You could have just texted the number. Why write it out? And… whose number is this?”
I capped the pen and explained casually, “Since I said it’s a gift, a physical object feels more real. Once you’ve recovered and have some time, contact this person. Her name is Qin Yan; she’s my former cellmate. Tell her you are the owner of Beisheng International, and she will treat you with the utmost hospitality. I have to go; Guan Shuyun is waiting for me at home.”
A look of unreadable complexity crossed Phoebe’s face. At the mention of Guan Shuyun, her eyes filled with even more sorrow. “Have you… fallen for her?”
I didn’t answer. I put the stool back in its place and prepared to leave. Phoebe’s stubborn desperation took me by surprise. She threw back the covers and ripped the IV needle out of her hand. Without even putting on slippers, she rushed in front of me to block my path. The loose hospital scrubs made her look so frail. She messily wiped the blood from the back of her hand onto her clothes; afraid of staining mine, she wanted to hug me but could only stand there.
She was on the verge of crying, tears swirling in her eyes. Her long hair was a mess. With a choked-up sob, she begged me, “Please don’t go. Don’t leave again. I can’t take it anymore. I really can’t hold on in a world without you.”
Once upon a time, she was so high and mighty; now she was this disheveled, speaking words of supplication in a low voice. I reached out to hold her shoulders, guiding her back to the bed. I pulled out a tissue to stop the bleeding on her hand while pressing the call button for the nurse.
In the brief moments before the nurse arrived, we sat side-by-side on the edge of the bed. I kept pressure on her hand. she tilted her head to rest on my shoulder, her swinging feet betraying a fleeting moment of happiness.
I stroked her long hair and asked calmly, “Do you really not blame me for the media exposure?”
Phoebe shook her head quickly. “When Qiao Xin threatened me with that, I was truly afraid. It involved too many interests and would affect the child’s growth. Because I had no counter-plan, I chose to yield to her. That caused so many misunderstandings that led us to this point. Out of all the major decisions I’ve made, that was my biggest failure.
When your interview went public, I truly didn’t blame you. I was no longer afraid of the consequences. In fact, the stone that had been weighing on my chest, making it hard to breathe, finally fell away.
Now the whole world knows You Feifan and Lan Feiyi were a couple. Everything you said was the absolute truth—there were no lies. It’s actually quite good. We’ve come out in such a cool way.”
Phoebe toyed with my hand, stroking the ring every now and then. “Do you know? When Qiao Xin gave me those choices, I chose to give up everything else without hesitation. Because you are the only one who won’t leave me. That selfish thought actually caused me to lose you for real.
During the days you were gone, I reflected every day on what I did wrong. Every time you yelled at me or cursed me, I was at a loss for words. Finally, I understood: my love had become a kidnapping. My ego and bossiness made me love you the wrong way, yet I forced you to accept it as ‘good for you.’ But you never blamed me.
I never thought I’d lose your company for the rest of my life, and I can’t let anyone else into my heart. You’re gone. It looks like only one person left, but no one knows… the thing I lost was a world.”
