My Sweet And Submissive Bunny Won't Stop Being Clingy - Chapter 28
Meng Hemian insisted on carrying her to the bathroom door before setting her down.
It wasn’t that Wen Shuyao was heavy, but rather that Meng Hemian’s own small frame was truly fragile; doing manual labor was far less effortless than she made it look on the surface.
Seeing Wen Shuyao standing firmly but staring at her with wide, expectant eyes, as if she wouldn’t move unless given an order. Meng Hemian found it amusing. She reached out and rubbed the girl’s head.
“Clean yourself up and get some rest early. We can talk about everything another day.”
Her tone was gentler than even she realized.
The tips of Wen Shuyao’s ears turned red and hot. She looked down, fumbling with the band-aid wrapped around her finger.
“Okay…”
She obediently entered the bathroom, closed the door, changed her clothes, and filled the bathtub. Then, she submerged herself completely.
Glug, glug. A few bubbles rose to the surface. The bathroom was filled with dense steam and the pleasant, sleep-inducing scent of body wash.
While both a bath and a rainstorm involved getting wet, they were two entirely different things. With the bright light overhead and the water sliding through her fingertips, Wen Shuyao finally felt the relaxed sensation of having survived a disaster.
With half her face underwater, she suddenly frowned. “Oh no…”
Meng Hemian must know something, otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so calm about her sudden appearance. What was Meng Hemian thinking? Would she want to have an open and honest talk another day and then tactfully ask her to leave? Or would they maintain the status quo and continue as ordinary friends?
But she didn’t want to leave Meng Hemian.
“Gurgle…”
With a soft whimper, more bubbles surfaced. Wen Shuyao’s “rabbit brain” was on overload, she finished washing in a daze, dressed, and shuffled back to her room in slippers.
Before she reached her door, she noticed a tray on the floor.
On the tray was a bowl of soy sauce noodles. The golden noodles were topped with bright green bok choy and were still steaming hot, it wasn’t hard to guess whose handiwork this was. Meng Hemian was decent at making snacks, but her cooking skills were still at a child’s level, limited to dumplings and noodles.
A note was pressed under the bowl: “Eat before you sleep, and remember to dry your hair.”
Before the food even hit her mouth, Wen Shuyao felt her stomach comforted and her heart warmed. Glancing toward Meng Hemian’s room, she could see a sliver of light through the door crack.
She was indeed starving. Carefully carrying the tray inside, she set it on the table and couldn’t wait to start eating. She poked her chopsticks to the bottom, as she tossed the noodles, she brought up a golden fried egg.
Having soaked in the broth for a while, the fried egg was saturated with soup, soft to the bite and bursting with the flavors of green onion and soy sauce. It was a simple bowl of noodles without even a proper topping, yet Wen Shuyao ate with immense satisfaction.
She was very easy to please, even if she ate Meng Hemian’s noodles every day, she would never get tired of them.
Meng Hemian, judging others by herself, assumed one felt safest when alone, thinking the timid rabbit would feel the same.
She didn’t realize that after Wen Shuyao finished her meal, she had already rolled across the bed three times while clutching the “stolen” clothes. She buried her face in the fabric to sniff it, but she could only smell Meng Hemian’s scent, not her body heat. This distinction remained no matter how many times she rolled instead, it only made her lightheaded and flushed from her neck to her ears.
“I’m such a pervert,” Wen Shuyao scolded herself shamefully. The next second, she transformed into a small rabbit and sprawled her entire body over the clothes.
The day after tomorrow seemed to be Meng Hemian’s birthday. No matter what, she had to give her a surprise gift!
Excited by her plan, Wen Shuyao stayed awake half the night. Early the next morning, she scrambled up and headed straight for the park.
Returning to this place, she still felt a lingering fear. The mud on the road hadn’t been washed away yet, and broken branches and leaves from the wind and rain were everywhere, showing how fierce last night’s thunderstorm had been.
For weak demons, attaining a human form is already a supreme blessing, few dare to hope to survive a lightning tribulation. But Wen Shuyao had not only survived it, she hadn’t lost a limb. Even giving herself to Meng Hemian wouldn’t be enough to repay such a great debt.
Following her memory, she found the spot where she had buried the pouch. After checking to ensure no one was watching, she used a small trowel to clear the thin soil. The pouch was so dirty its original appearance was unrecognizable, but fortunately, the contents were safe.
Exhaling a long sigh of relief, Wen Shuyao wrapped the bracelet in a handkerchief, cradled it in her hands, and hurried to her next destination.
For a birthday, a broken bracelet was a bad omen. She took her long-prepared savings to a pet supply store and bought a large box of high-quality canned cat food. Then, she headed to the cat café and presented both the cat food and the broken bracelet to the white cat.
Wen Shuyao looked hopeful. “Miss Cat, could you please…”
The white cat fastidiously licked her paw and squinted her sapphire eyes. “A mere human is also worthy….ptui ptui ptui!”
She cut herself off. She had just sworn yesterday never to speak ill of Meng Hemian again. As “Miss Cat,” she kept her word and wouldn’t break a promise. She flicked her tail and pressed her paw pad onto the broken bracelet.
“Fine, meow. Since she saved you, I’ll reluctantly help her once.”
Soft spiritual energy was infused into the bracelet. As if by magic, the jade bracelet that had been broken into three pieces was instantly restored to its original state. The bracelet itself was made of high-quality Hetian jade, warm and smooth, with a delicate patina. It was clear the original owner had cherished it, often holding and fiddling with it.
“Thank you,” Wen Shuyao carefully placed the jade bracelet into a gift box and smiled sweetly. “I’ll take care of all your canned food from now on, Miss Cat.”
“Hmph, that’s more like it.” The white cat tilted her head haughtily.
Wen Shuyao then brewed a cup of fragrant tea and ducked into the back courtyard. Tu Shanxiu was leaning against a railing feeding the fish in the pond. Hearing the movement, she glanced over sideways, her peach-blossom eyes shining with charm.
“Sister Xiu,” Wen Shuyao delivered the tea to Tu Shanxiu’s hand and said obediently, “I ordered a vermillion qipao for you from Dianchun Workshop.”
Dianchun Workshop was a famous embroidery house among demons. Tu Shanxiu loved their silk qipaos the most.
Tu Shanxiu took a sip of tea and snorted softly. “Didn’t I say not to come back until you solved the ‘child’ problem?”
Faced suddenly with the thing she least wanted to address, Wen Shuyao didn’t know how to answer. She could actually feel that the influence on her was getting heavier. She nervously hid her hands behind her back and stammered an explanation: “Soon, soon.”
Then, she bolted out of the cat cafe like a fleeing rabbit, not daring to look back.
By the time she finished everything, it was already afternoon. Wen Shuyao carefully tied a ribbon around the gift box and attached an exquisite birthday card.
Strangely, Meng Hemian hadn’t come to talk to her about her identity today either. Since the morning, Meng Hemian had seemed a bit distracted, only taking a few bites of her food.
When Wen Shuyao asked, she simply replied flatly, “It’s nothing. I have to go out tomorrow morning; don’t wait for me for lunch.”
“Oh, okay.”
Wen Shuyao felt it was odd but didn’t think much of it. She lowered her head to finish her rice, already having a plan for tomorrow.
The next day, Wen Shuyao got up very early. While Meng Hemian was still asleep, she light-footedly tucked the gift box into Meng Hemian’s bag, she would see it as soon as she went to grab her things.
The little rabbit was very pleased with her idea. This way, Meng Hemian would see the gift immediately and wouldn’t feel the need to attend the birthday party hosted by her father.
For the rest of her time, she could prepare a birthday cake before Meng Hemian got home.
Wen Shuyao hummed a song in the kitchen as she placed bacon and lunch meat onto sliced toasted bread, making easy to carry sandwiches.
Ding-dong~ The doorbell rang.
Who would visit this early?
Confused, Wen Shuyao trotted to the door to open it. The visitor had a messy ponytail and seemed very familiar, casually saying good morning before wandering into the house.
Wan Xianyu stared at the sandwiches on the table, her mouth curling into a grin. “Great, there’s even breakfast.”
“Don’t you have breakfast at your own house?”
Meng Hemian had just finished getting ready when she saw someone with ill intentions toward the breakfast Wen Shuyao had made. Without a word, she stuffed a piece of toast into Wan Xianyu’s mouth.
She then picked up a sandwich and nodded toward Wen Shuyao, thanking her warmly, “Thank you for the hard work.”
Then, with a cold face, she urged Wan Xianyu: “Hurry up. I don’t want to run into that person.”
Wan Xianyu took a huge bite of the bread.
Double Standards! Such a double standard! How can anyone keep a friend like this?
She arrived in a hurry and left just as quickly, nearly forgetting her paper bag. As Wen Shuyao handed it to her, she accidentally caught a glimpse of what was inside.
The bag was filled with white roses, freshly cut from the stem, still glistening with translucent dew. Confused as to why the two of them would be carrying flowers, Wen Shuyao asked, “The white roses… who are they for?”
“For Auntie,” Wan Xianyu explained. “Today is the anniversary of Meng Hemian’s mother’s death.”
The anniversary.
Wen Shuyao went numb.
Wan Xianyu didn’t notice the change in the person beside her. She glanced out of the corner of her eye at Meng Hemian, who was standing not far away looking completely impatient.
Lowering her voice, she whispered, “Meng Hemian probably never told you, but her birthday and her mother’s death anniversary fall on the same day. That’s why she doesn’t celebrate her birthday, she only goes to the cemetery to keep her mother company.”
She didn’t forget to add a snide remark: “Just look at her today, what a terrible temper!”
Wen Shuyao looked over and saw Meng Hemian standing outside with her arms crossed, waiting, her expression ice-cold. Panic set in. Had she accidentally turned a well-intentioned gesture into something terrible?
But it was too late to take the birthday gift box back. A loud buzzing filled Wen Shuyao’s ears, making it impossible to hear anything Wan Xianyu said afterward. Her eyes grew hot and stinging, tears on the verge of falling. She wanted to run up and explain, but the image of Meng Hemian’s indifferent gaze flashed through her mind, leaving her limbs too stiff to move.
Bang!
The little rabbit flinched as she watched the door shut right in front of her.
The cemetery on the west side of the city sat against a green mountain with a murmuring river flowing in front of it, a prime location, and naturally, an expensive one. However, this plot had actually been purchased by Meng Hemian’s grandmother to bury her most beloved daughter.
The woman in the photograph remained frozen at her most beautiful age, smiling like a flower, her eyes gazing gently at those who came to visit.
Wan Xianyu placed the white roses before the tombstone and stepped back. She watched silently as Meng Hemian pulled out a soft cloth to wipe the tombstone and the photo, then laid out the snacks she had prepared herself.
The wind blew across the hills, and the sound of the pines in the valley felt like the soft whispers of an old friend.
Meng Hemian lowered her eyes and reached into her bag for the gift she had brought her mother, only to pull out.
A box tied with a ridiculously flashy, bright red bow that said “Happy Birthday.” It was incredibly conspicuous in the black, white, and gray landscape of the cemetery.
Meng Hemian: “…” Wan Xianyu: “???”
What on earth had gotten mixed in here?
Meng Hemian frowned and opened the box, only to freeze in place. Lying on the red velvet cloth was a white jade bracelet.
Wan Xianyu poked her head over curiously. “This is…”
Meng Hemian picked up the bracelet and examined it closely. Under the sunlight, the jade texture was seamless, without a single crack. After a long moment, she spoke in a low, husky voice: “It’s my mother’s bracelet.”
“How is that possible?” Wan Xianyu’s eyes went wide. “Is this the other one? Did that scoundrel father of yours put it in there?”
Meng Hemian shook her head, carefully placing the bracelet back into the box, her tone absolutely certain. There was actually a faint, inconspicuous nick on the bracelet, it was from when she had been naughty as a child and accidentally chipped it. She had just felt it with her fingers.
