- My Sister Never Said She Was a Creepy Tale
- Chapter 94 - Since We're Here—Let's Have a New Year
At nine o’clock, Yue Yiyue was hauled out of bed by Gu Nanqiu to eat the reunion breakfast. She sat on the sofa, feeling a bit dazed.
She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts, and instinctively picked up the warm water nearby, taking a sip.
“Did you not sleep well last night?” Gu Nanqiu turned on the Spring Festival Gala as background music. “You can sit here and rest a bit. Ye Qiu and Yu Man will be here shortly.”
Hearing the names, Yue Yiyue thought back and remembered the person she had met once before, the one who was called a sister.
“And what about that other sister, Lan Shu Shuang?” This surname was quite unique, and Yue Yiyue had always kept it in mind.
Unexpectedly, Yue Yiyue mentioned this person, and Gu Nanqiu raised an eyebrow. “She’s in the hospital, I think…”
“The child was naughty and got carried away playing earlier, injuring herself. Her mother will arrange for someone to look after her.”
Yue Yiyue nodded. “Staying in the hospital over the New Year. I hope she’ll be more careful in the future.”
“Speaking of which, I talked about a movie with Sister Ye Qiu last time. Since they are in C City, maybe we can invite them to the movie tomorrow, too.” Yue Yiyue tapped her phone, thinking about whether she should send Lan Shu Shuang a red envelope through Nanqiu, but wondered if that would be inappropriate.
Gu Nanqiu propped up her chin, smiling as she watched Yue Yiyue looking conflicted. “Of course. They should agree. Why don’t you check the cinema hall first? Oh, I remember Ye Qiu has some connections; let’s book a small theater then.”
Before Yue Yiyue could fully understand what “booking a small theater” meant, she saw Gu Nanqiu stand up, dial a number on her phone, and say a couple of things to the person on the other end.
Yue Lu refilled Yue Yiyue’s tea and scooped some vermicelli into the bowl in front of her. “Just go when the time comes.”
She was about to say something else when her phone chimed. Yue Yiyue picked it up, and a message from Yu An popped up: “Happy New Year! I’m afraid your phone will be flooded with New Year’s Eve greetings, and I’m afraid New Year’s Day greetings will be too late for you to see. Are you free to come down in twenty minutes? I’ve come to pay you a New Year’s visit.”
Seeing this amusing message, Yue Yiyue couldn’t help but burst into a laugh.
Noticing that both people in the room were looking at her, Yue Yiyue held up her phone. “It’s Yu An, a friend I met before. She’s come to pay her New Year’s respects to me.”
“I’ll go down and meet her after I finish breakfast.” Yue Yiyue finished the rest of the vermicelli in her bowl, pulled out a tissue, and grabbed her coat. “We don’t seem to have disposable cups at home. I’ll bring some.”
“Is there anything else you need me to bring?”
Yu An was dressed quite festively today, wearing a red cotton jacket paired with thick trousers and snow boots. Seeing Yue Yiyue approach, she waved from a distance. “Benefactor.”
Yue Yiyue walked closer and saw milk, a large gift bag of snacks, and a piece of pie lying on the ground.
A red envelope was placed on top.
“…You’re going to visit other relatives later, aren’t you?” Yue Yiyue asked cautiously. “That must be it, right?”
Yu An raised her hand and tucked the red envelope into Yue Yiyue’s hand. “Everyone in my family is rich now, who else would I visit? This is for you, thank you for rescuing me.”
“My life is worth much more than these things. Since it’s the New Year, I won’t go up and sit down. I’ll leave right after delivering this.”
With that, she turned to walk away.
Yue Yiyue lunged forward and grabbed her. “Since you’re here, why don’t you stay and have some breakfast?”
“We even have sweet fermented rice with egg to eat—”
Remembering that Gu Nanqiu was upstairs, Yu An shook her head even faster, and her gesture of refusal became firmer.
Suddenly, Yu An froze. Yue Yiyue watched the person who had just been eager to leave suddenly change her mind, then stiffly pulled back the hand Yue Yiyue was holding.
“What a coincidence. Let’s go up and sit together. The more people, the merrier.” Ye Qiu’s voice drifted over from the side. Today, she was wearing a gray-green overcoat with no particular markings.
She was wearing the scarf Yue Yiyue had given her around her neck. This combination looked elegant and casual, especially as she stood leaning against the streetlamp with her hands in her pockets, looking somewhat relaxed.
Yue Yiyue looked at the facial features similar to Gu Nanqiu’s, further confirming the thought in her heart.
Her gaze shifted backward, where she saw Yu Man, the sister she had seen last time.
Today, she was wearing a long white wool dress underneath a fluffy white coat, carrying a white bag. She looked like a giant sheep.
It made Yue Yiyue’s hands itch to touch the sister’s coat.
Yu Man noticed Yue Yiyue’s gaze. She lifted her head slightly, like a proud little peacock, and took a red envelope from her bag. “Happy New Year.”
After saying this, she retreated behind Ye Qiu, remaining quiet.
Yue Yiyue subconsciously squeezed the red envelope, finding an irregular object inside. Having been handed it abruptly, Yue Yiyue was about to return it when Ye Qiu stopped her.
“Let’s talk upstairs, let’s talk upstairs.” Ye Qiu put her arm around Yue Yiyue, tilted her head, and took a deep breath of Yue Yiyue’s scent. She snapped her fingers contentedly. “I’m so hungry. We can eat a bit more when we go up.”
They had a lively breakfast. Yu An was pulled aside by Yue Lu and bombarded with questions: Does she have a partner? Does she want to find one? What is her sexual orientation?
Yu An sat obediently on the sofa like a little quail, shaking her head frantically. “I don’t plan to, I don’t plan to, I don’t have any interest. I’m not naturally fond of people.”
Gu Nanqiu seemed satisfied with the answer and finally showed a gentle smile, placing a glass of warm water in front of Yu An. “Eat more; there’s still some in the pot.”
Then she went to wash fruit for Yue Yiyue.
Ye Qiu was busy instructing Yue Yiyue to peel shrimp for her, mentioning that she had booked a venue, and if they wanted to go, they could leave soon.
Right after saying this, she stood up and peered into the room. “Oh dear, the only movie showtime today is at midnight. Yu An can sleep on the sofa then, Yu Man can sleep with Auntie Yue, and I’ll just have to squeeze in with Yue Yiyue and Gu Nanqiu.”
Yu Man looked at Ye Qiu as if she wanted to speak, but after seeing the black card that flashed in the other woman’s hand, she closed her mouth. “I’ll have someone deliver my things later.”
She then added, “I’m not used to your things; they’re all too low—”
Her sentence was cut off by Gu Nanqiu. “Since we have time to spare anyway, let’s play some Mahjong. We finally have enough people.”
When Yue Yiyue heard this, her eyes lit up. There was indeed a Mahjong table in the utility room, but it had been put away since only the two of them lived there.
Yue Yiyue knew a little bit about it, having picked up some basic knowledge from the old ladies while learning Chinese Chess before.
Twenty minutes later, the clatter of Mahjong tiles began. The normally cozy little house became completely lively, and the smile on Yue Yiyue’s face grew more genuine.
Especially after winning seven rounds in a row, Yue Yiyue counted the change in her hand and sincerely exclaimed, “My luck this year is pretty good.”
Gu Nanqiu, sitting opposite her, discarded a $30,000 tile, looked at her own hand, and then glanced at Ye Qiu beside her.
Yu An, who had lost so much that she was calm, was only grateful that she had brought enough change when she left home today.
Yu Man watched the television and chatted with Yue Lu, her gaze occasionally falling on the card game. The moment she met Yu An’s eyes.
Yu An’s eyes lit up, and in the next round, Yu Man changed chairs and sat in that spot.
After a few rounds of winning and losing, Yue Yiyue’s enthusiasm grew even higher. Gu Nanqiu noticed this and peeled an orange for Yue Yiyue while waiting.
After eating one segment, Yue Yiyue expressionlessly called over Yu An, who was standing beside them watching the game, and also distributed some to Ye Qiu and Yu Man.
“Sour…” Yu An’s face twisted for a moment from the sourness. She looked down at Yue Yiyue, who had successfully played a prank.
Yu Man maintained her indifferent expression. “Do you have any more?”
This was the second sentence she had spoken to Yue Yiyue. Yue Yiyue handed over the rest of the orange in her hand.
Gu Nanqiu promptly handed her a lemon.
“Wow—Yu Man, that’s amazing!” Watching Yu Man eat the lemon—the one that was so sour Yue Yiyue had never eaten a second time—she forgot about playing cards.
“Tonight, we can cook a sour vegetable and golden soup sliced fish.” Seeing this, Yue Lu muttered to herself and headed to the snack cabinet, taking out the golden soup sliced fish seasoning packet and the sour vegetable packet.
“Yu An, come in and help me kill the fish.” Yue Lu called out towards the living room.
The sound of Mahjong tiles continued in the living room, interspersed with the quiet complaining of Yu Man and Yue Yiyue.
Ye Qiu and Gu Nanqiu acted as supporting comedians, following up on their comments.
In the kitchen, Yu An was holding a knife and learning from Yue Lu how to debone and thinly slice the fish.
Yu An found the technique increasingly familiar, much like the method one of the head chefs used to slice human flesh in a gourmet feast instance she had participated in before…
Not daring to think too much, Yu An just kept working with her head down.
The lively New Year was truly lively.
The Spring Festival New Year’s film told a very family-friendly story with quite a few dense comedic moments. Yue Yiyue watched it quite happily.
The VIP box could comfortably accommodate six people.
The comfortable seats and the abundant snacks were all new and interesting experiences for Yue Yiyue, and the visual effects on the screen were excellent.
Yue Yiyue looked at Ye Qiu sitting beside her. She leaned closer. “Sister, you are truly amazing—”
Ye Qiu raised an eyebrow. “I know. If you come again later, just use your name.”
“No, no, no.” Yue Yiyue lowered her voice. “Watching a movie alone is so boring. I wanted to ask what kind of screen this is. I want to book this kind from now on.”
She would book this kind when she came with Nanqiu in the future. It was comfortable for watching movies; although a bit expensive, she was willing to spend the money.
“I’ll tell you later,” Ye Qiu glanced at Gu Nanqiu beside her, her eyes slightly narrowed. “Are you coming again tomorrow?”
Yue Yiyue nodded emphatically.
And so, the group spent three days together, playing Mahjong, eating, and watching movies.
Yu An went from being timidly cautious at first to now slamming the Mahjong table and angrily demanding to know where her Red Dragon tile was!
After losing several rounds, Yu Man would randomly kick either Gu Nanqiu or Ye Qiu off the table, replacing them with Yu An or Yue Lu.
Yue Yiyue guessed that her excellent luck might be related to these two people because of this action.
Finding a gap in the game, she pulled Gu Nanqiu aside into a corner, kissed her on the corner of the mouth, and mumbled that she wanted to rely on her own true ability.
After losing seventeen consecutive hands, Yue Yiyue finally learned how to count tiles.
Before going to sleep, she shook Ye Qiu, somewhat distressed. “In that last round, if you hadn’t ‘Pung-ed’ that tile, I would have ‘Hu’ed!”
“Why did you have to ‘Pung’ that exact tile!!!”
Gu Nanqiu came over, laughing, to mediate, but Yue Yiyue pounced on her on the bed. “How did you get a ‘Pure Same Suit’!!!”
“How did you get a ‘Pure Same Suit’!!!”
“And two ‘Pure Same Suit’ hands!!!”
Gu Nanqiu laughed even louder, holding Yue Yiyue by the waist and rubbing her little dog head. “Maybe my luck is just a little bit good—”
Annoyed, Yue Yiyue grabbed her doll and ran to the living room to sleep with Yu An on the makeshift small bed.
Half an hour later, the living room was silent. Gu Nanqiu quietly came out and carried the already fast-asleep Yue Yiyue back to the room.
Yu An quietly peeked out from under the blanket, saw the flying tentacles behind Gu Nanqiu, and quickly pulled her head back in.
