- Chapter 95 - Yue Yiyue: I'm Very Healthy! Why Am I Not Healthy?
The festive atmosphere faded after the sixth day of the New Year.
The shops along the streets had started to open for business, hanging signs celebrating the new spring, though the discounts hadn’t changed at all.
From time to time, people carrying boxes of milk and bags of fruit shuttled through the crowd, heading towards their destinations.
Yue Yiyue didn’t have to go out to visit relatives, nor did she have any to visit.
However, right now, she wished she had many, many relatives to visit, preferably until the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.
That way, she wouldn’t have to be like she was now, carrying a suitcase, trailing behind her mother, and watching her get into the car with longing eyes.
Waving at the car.
After a brief reunion, she couldn’t quite describe the feeling of separation.
She just felt an empty space in her heart.
Just yesterday, they were still excitedly learning to play the card game “Dǎ Shēngjí” (Climbing/Tractor), fighting with Ye Qiu over who got to wash the dishes, and discussing where to go for a walk in the evening to enjoy the scenery.
Now, the chargers were unplugged, and the suitcases were dragged away.
Yu Man and Ye Qiu left slightly earlier, taking Yu An with them, and even cleaned up the makeshift bed in the living room.
Returning home with a sense of dejection, Yue Yiyue pushed the door open. Gu Nanqiu had already finished cleaning up the house efficiently.
The whole room was clean, tidy, and still adorned with bright red lanterns.
Yue Yiyue changed her shoes and walked to the sofa, collapsing onto it.
“Finished seeing her off?” Gu Nanqiu walked out of the room with a mop. Seeing Yue Yiyue’s sad look, Gu Nanqiu lowered her gaze. It was good to give her some time to transition.
“There are still two rooms left; you can tidy them up later. I’ve finished the living room, the bathroom, and the master bedroom.”
“Yiyue, you should pay attention to yourself lately. I feel like you’ve been losing a lot more hair than before.”
“Didn’t I say I would take care of the cleaning?” Yue Yiyue got up, a little embarrassed. “I’ve been a bit troubled these past few days, so the hair loss is a little abnormal.”
“I feel like a child, not sensible at all.” Yue Yiyue walked over to Gu Nanqiu and took the mop from her hand. “I’m so childish, always hoping for this time to last longer.”
“It would be best if it could stay at this moment forever.” Yue Yiyue rested her chin on the mop. “Do you think there’s a kind of creature that could create a space to keep everyone in it, just repeating a period of life?”
“Just like that movie we watched before,” Yue Yiyue sighed deeply after speaking. “I should still focus on studying hard, doing my internship well, and finding a job soon.”
“It’s just as well, though. My sister didn’t leave.”
Yue Yiyue shook her head and walked wobbily toward the room, dragging the mop, which left a trail of wet marks.
If Yue Yiyue had looked back, she would have seen a layer of dense bubbles on the edges of those water marks, vying with each other to record her words.
Gu Nanqiu lifted her foot and pressed down. A faint pop sound and tiny screams were covered by the timely ring of a phone call.
A moment later, the tentacles in the room received a command: avoid Yue Yiyue and start a carpet search for any small traces left by the Main God.
Yue Yiyue was completely unaware of this. Her earlier thoughts had already been placed elsewhere. She was only thinking that after the fifteenth day of the month, she would go with Yu An to find the information broker Yu An had mentioned.
Perhaps then she could retrieve all her memories.
But what was giving her a headache now was that she needed to find an excuse, a suitable excuse to go out.
Since they left, Yue Yiyue kept feeling that something was wrong. Whenever she looked up at the gray sky, she felt like something was watching her.
When she went out, the dogs she encountered barked at her with abnormal cheerfulness.
But if she got a little closer, they would bare their teeth and snarl.
She inexplicably kept running into murky black cats at the doorstep. They would let out miserable cries upon seeing Yue Yiyue, then vanish without a trace as she approached.
She could also see the corpses of rats or birds left by stray cats at the front door.
The wailing would continue throughout the night.
Disturbing her sister in the next room, who always seemed to sleep poorly.
Her sister was also shy; she didn’t speak, just stood in the corner watching them.
Yue Yiyue couldn’t bear it. She and Gu Nanqiu talked it over and arranged for the property management to trap the cats in the vicinity, sterilizing those that needed it, and adding more cat food feeding stations.
Now she could get a good night’s sleep.
However, every day when Yue Yiyue went out, there was always one cat following her, neither too far nor too close.
It would disappear into the bushes the moment she turned her head.
Her right eye twitched uncontrollably, and she unintentionally cut her middle finger.
Even her ID card, which had been stored in a cabinet, suddenly disappeared.
These things made Yue Yiyue feel extremely uneasy, as if something was obstructing her next move.
When messaging Yu An, Yue Yiyue expressed her confusion: “Is this a hint that we shouldn’t go to that place?”
Yu An merely forwarded a few posts about metaphysics and recommended two Taoist temples and three Buddhist temples.
Looking at the content, Yue Yiyue felt it was even more absurd.
“I don’t care who you are, get off Yu An right now.”
Only then did Yu An quietly reply: “If you don’t see a monster, just treat it as an external sign. If you feel it’s not the right time to go, we can always go later.”
“Anyway, just let me know when you’re leaving. I only need to train now. I’ll be competing next year, and I hope to take first place.”
“Then I won’t disturb your training.” Yue Yiyue quickly left this message, put down her phone, and leaned back on the sofa.
So many things had happened these past few days that she no longer wanted to go out.
Home, after all, was much safer than the outside world.
This was a mutual understanding between her and Gu Nanqiu.
She abided by it and believed in this rule.
She gave up morning runs and exercise, simply living her life in this room.
During the day, she chatted with her online friend, with Gu Nanqiu, and with her sister.
This kind of life was not bad.
The chirping of the birds outside felt noisy to her, and the sharp sounds of children playing downstairs made her uneasy.
She tried hard to suppress her discomfort with external sounds, striving to pretend that she was living a good life.
Gu Nanqiu watched Yue Yiyue sitting in the corner, speaking to the air, calling out “Sister,” asking why her sister hadn’t waited for her at the orphanage, and asking if there was anywhere her sister wanted to go in the future.
“Yes, that’s right. It’s been like this ever since she talked about repeating a certain life,” Gu Nanqiu twirled the red string in her hand, asking the person on the other end of the phone, “Did any of the humans you raised have this situation?”
“I’ve handled it myself; it’s highly unlikely that pollution reached her.”
The person on the phone said a few words. Gu Nanqiu looked at Yue Yiyue, who was clutching the air beside her, and sighed. “Has it come to this step? …I understand… there’s nothing that can be done…”
“Is this the final body test?”
“Okay. After the final adaptation test is over… I understand… after going through it twice, what else is there not to understand?”
After hanging up the phone, Gu Nanqiu squatted beside Yue Yiyue. She lowered her eyes and gently kissed Yue Yiyue’s folded hands. “Baby, I’m sorry. Turns out you didn’t stay awake before because you liked this face of mine.”
That damned Greed! She secretly told on them, saying that Yue Yiyue killed the previous boss and took a shortcut, so the make-up test had begun.
The next time they met, she would surely crush Greed and throw everything Greed had collected to Pride.
To enrich Pride’s cabinet.
The thought of Yue Yiyue’s cognition being quietly altered by the Main God during that time…
There must be something wrong with this world.
Yue Yiyue was not the only one who realized it.
The online friend who had been in contact with her suddenly sent Yue Yiyue a somewhat baffling message.
“Can you save me?”
“I think I’m dying.”
“The people around me seem to have been replaced by something.”
The first thought Yue Yiyue had upon seeing these three lines was that this online friend was recommending some new movie to her.
But upon seeing the long self-narration below, Yue Yiyue instantly snapped out of her illusion.
My dear friend, do you ever feel like there’s something wrong with your life? Like you can see something with your ears? Smell something with your eyes? Or taste something with your mouth?
You must be confused when you read this, but I’m truly in a state of sensory confusion right now. I don’t know how to describe it, but everything changed after my sister returned from A City.
It started with the people around me; they began talking to themselves.
Then I saw one of them jump down with my own eyes. She said they were all getting their retribution.
I initially thought they were stressed, so I arranged for psychological treatment and vacations.
I comforted their families.
But it seems, just as she said, we are all getting our retribution.
Since that day, I’ve found that my food contains many strange things; dense, tiny eyes blink at me.
And strange vegetables. The feeling is so awful, and they taste terrible, too. They tear at my stomach, and I’ve already regurgitated several times #%#…&. It’s all so awful.
Even the things in my room are talking to me.
The people around me have started a new game recently, pulling out different internal organs and asking me if I think they look beautiful.
If I say they don’t look good, they’ll lock me up and call me a lunatic.
If I praise them, they’ll quietly go about their own business.
I don’t know why I accepted it so quickly. Well, actually, I feel like I’m close to jumping down myself.
This is my secret phone that no one else knows about. For some reason, when I contact anyone else, I get a red exclamation mark, but I can send you messages. Honestly, I don’t know when I’ll be disconnected from you.
My friend, can you save me?
It’s okay if you can’t. I just hope you can tell me: Is your life like this?
If it’s not, then that’s great—
After reading this long, somewhat bizarre text message, Yue Yiyue’s first thought was that someone had brought something back from A City.
And in order to persecute this unlucky online friend, they had inflicted a strange tale on this friend and the people around her.
Looking at Gu Nanqiu, who was humming an unknown tune in the room, Yue Yiyue turned her head to look at her sister, who was sitting there obediently.
Her sister waved her hand. “Yiyue, go do what you want to do. I’ll wait for you here.”
Yue Yiyue nodded. “I’m just going out to buy some groceries and check things out. I’ll be back soon—”
When Gu Nanqiu heard Yue Yiyue’s request, she turned her head, a little confused. “You said you want to go out grocery shopping with me later?”
“Yes, we can,” Gu Nanqiu smiled, her beautiful features relaxing. “You haven’t been out for a long time. It’s great that you want to go for a walk today.”
“But Yiyue, you’ve developed a not-too-serious illness, so if you feel unwell after going out, you must tell me.”
Yue Yiyue didn’t take this sentence to heart. She hadn’t been in contact with anyone.
It wasn’t until she reached the vegetable market that Yue Yiyue realized she might truly be sick.
She could see the ears of corn in the vegetable baskets blinking their eyes, enthusiastically promoting themselves.
A squid nearby jumped up and slapped a passerby, asking why it needed to be “fresher” when it was clearly fresh enough.
Eggs grew huge eyes and scurried across the floor.
The passersby around them didn’t seem to find anything wrong with this; they continued to select their food as usual.
Gu Nanqiu was doing the same.
Yue Yiyue watched Gu Nanqiu picking through the vegetable basket, tossing a few corn ears with closed eyes into the basket, and then picking up a cauliflower with strange tumors growing on it from the side.
Looking at these things, Yue Yiyue looked down at her watch in confusion.
Sanity (SAN) Value: 32.
It was still continuously dropping.
