- My Sister Never Said She Was a Creepy Tale
- Chapter 63 - The Rain Has Gotten Heavy......
Yue Yiyao had seen City A featured on a short-video app.
A place of hedonism, intoxication, and playing games with the world—this is City A.
Yue Yiyao found this description a little hard to grasp, but when she saw comments recommending local snacks and architecture, she felt it didn’t sound too bad. City A was one of the economically developed areas in the region. The place had a sea and the largest port.
Gu Nanqiu would look beautiful taking photos there wearing the scarf.
Scrolling down, a netizen named “Little Su Little Su” commented: “City A has seen too many unknown deaths recently. Lately, everyone can enter but not leave, so be careful.”
Yue Yiyao scrolled past, ignoring the warning.
She was twenty minutes away from boarding the plane.
Yue Yiyao stood up, and Gu Nanqiu followed closely behind. She peered around excitedly: “Wow, then we can celebrate the holidays there together!”
“Yes, it will be a very interesting experience.” Yue Yiyao walked towards the VIP channel: “If you like the hot springs there, then in the years I’m around, we can celebrate the holidays there every time.”
“That’s wonderful, Yiyao!” Gu Nanqiu counted on her fingers: “Then later we can visit a few places every year. You choose! If we can live for sixty years… we’ll eventually travel the entire world!”
Yue Yiyao looked at Gu Nanqiu. A trace of confusion regarding the future flashed in her eyes; she dared not promise “forever.”
She simply reminded Gu Nanqiu that it was time to board the plane.
Gu Nanqiu, immersed in planning their future blueprint, also noticed the implicit meaning behind Yue Yiyao’s silence. She gripped Yue Yiyao’s hand: “We will have a future.”
Yue Yiyao paused, not responding, but repeated: “Let’s go, it’s time to board the plane.”
The plane took off smoothly. A child nearby was playing with a small doll, occasionally stealing glances at Gu Nanqiu. Seeing that Gu Nanqiu didn’t show any dislike or other negative emotions, the child said a few words to her mother, then jumped down from her seat and pattered over to Gu Nanqiu’s spot.
Following the flight attendant’s reminder, Gu Nanqiu instinctively embraced the uninvited guest.
Finally having snuggled up to the older sister, the child lay in Gu Nanqiu’s strong arms, feeling a continuous stream of warmth. She hoped to grow up to be as strong and beautiful as this sister.
The child’s innocence was always amusing. Gu Nanqiu also reached out to play with the child.
Yue Yiyao captured the moment. Recently, the number of photos of Gu Nanqiu on her phone was increasing. Yue Yiyao wondered if she should get a new camera.
Gu Nanqiu saw Yue Yiyao suddenly put her phone down. Holding the child, she said: “Yiyao, she’s so well-behaved—”
Yue Yiyao leaned in. The child happily called her “Sister” and reached out to bump fists with Yue Yiyao.
In an instant, the two—one large, one small—started playing together. This materialized when the child took out her brand puzzle and asked Yue Yiyao if she wanted to play together.
Gu Nanqiu also joined in. The two adults and one child began building a small boat. The long flight instantly became interesting.
The child’s mother looked at the two kind strangers apologetically. She took out a beautiful fountain pen from her bag: “Thank you for your patience.”
Yue Yiyao leaned out: “You’re welcome. Your daughter is very cute and smart. Her strategy for building blocks is very clear, and she even told us not to make it too big, or it would be difficult for her to carry when we get off the plane.”
“Are you going to City A?” The child’s mother looked at Yue Yiyao: “You’d better transfer and leave there quickly. That place hasn’t been peaceful lately.”
Seeming to have some reservations, the child’s mother lowered her voice and looked around: “Don’t stay there too long. According to rumors, an unknown rule has recently descended upon that city. You college students might not understand, but my friend’s friend’s relative died mysteriously there. No one knows what to do about this thing yet.”
Hearing the word “rule,” Yue Yiyao glanced at Gu Nanqiu, who was sitting beside her. She was still focused on building blocks, seemingly indifferent to this so-called rule.
Was this part of the plot?
Yue Yiyao quickly reviewed it in her mind, but there was only mist again.
Fine.
“Thank you for the warning, Sister. We understand. So, something very dangerous has appeared in City A, right? Well, we’ll just soak in the hot springs and eat some food then.”
The plane landed. The child reluctantly said goodbye to the two creative sisters, satisfied with the small boat in her hands, and held her mother’s hand to catch her connecting flight.
Yue Yiyao looked outside City A. Dark clouds were churning, and thunder rumbled.
“It looks like their flight might be delayed?” Yue Yiyao squinted, looking at the many flights that had been announced as grounded: “I wasn’t looking out the window earlier, or I might have seen lightning.”
Gu Nanqiu didn’t feel any regret: “When we get back, we should buy this ourselves and put it together! There’s still space on the shelf. Let’s put a big one together!”
“Okay, I’ll follow your lead. Let’s go to the hotel now. It’ll be troublesome if the rain gets any heavier.”
Gu Nanqiu looked back at the woman in the blue shirt and long black trench coat standing in the distance. Her eyes flashed with a hint of hesitation, but finally, Gu Nanqiu gave a subtle nod toward her.
The figure then disappeared into the crowd.
Something started to operate in the air; an invisible membrane enveloped the entire city of A.
Raindrops the size of beans smashed against the car window, drumming out an unpleasant rhythm. The view outside the window was blurred.
The car moved steadily on the elevated highway. Yue Yiyao looked at the composed driver up front and felt envious. She really wanted to get her own driver’s license when she got back. It was just that cars were too expensive, and based on her salary after graduation, she couldn’t afford one right now, so she had reluctantly given up the idea.
Gu Nanqiu looked outside, preoccupied. It was unclear what kind of scenery of City A she saw through the small window.
“Nanqiu, are you worried that the rain is too heavy and will affect our plans?” Yue Yiyao watched the rain intensify. A heavy rain warning popped up on her phone: “I checked the weather forecast; it will be cloudy later, so we can go out then. Tomorrow, we can visit indoor places or just sleep all day at the hotel.”
“That works.” Gu Nanqiu turned her head and smiled softly at Yue Yiyao: “Whatever you arrange, I’ll follow your lead.”
After speaking, she moved closer to Yue Yiyao’s position and leaned her head on her shoulder, whispering in her ear: “Yiyao, this place doesn’t feel very comfortable to me. When we get back to the hotel, let me get a good night’s sleep, and I’ll wake up tomorrow morning to play with you, okay?”
Yue Yiyao naturally put her arm around Gu Nanqiu’s shoulder, signaling her to lie on her lap. She combed the hair of the Gu Nanqiu in her arms: “You can sleep as long as you want. Isn’t a rainy day the best time to sleep?”
The driver looked at their intimate gesture through the rearview mirror, pretending not to notice.
There seemed to be a sweet scent in the air. Yue Yiyao felt her mood lift as she smelled it. She quietly hummed a song: “Nanqiu, do you think we can get a cat later at home?”
“Or a dog?”
Gu Nanqiu didn’t answer immediately. Her hand clenched her clothing. Her gaze fell on the cat figurine on the dashboard. She seemed to be staring at it, yet she also seemed to be looking at something else—a memory?
It was a pity Yue Yiyao couldn’t see it.
Yue Yiyao simply stroked Gu Nanqiu’s hair, wondering if a Maine Coon, like Gu Nanqiu herself, would fight with her. And if she gave more attention to the cat, would Nanqiu get jealous?
The person in her arms’ breathing gradually became even. Yue Yiyao gently played with her fingers. It seemed that playing with the little girl on the plane had indeed tired her out.
When Gu Nanqiu woke up, she was already lying in fragrant, soft bedding.
Yue Yiyao was beside her, wearing pajamas of the same color, which must have been the clothes they had mailed over a few days ago.
She rubbed her hair and first surveyed the room.
It was the one she had prepared: three rooms and two living areas, a qualified temporary lair.
She walked around the door, seemingly confirming that the locks were secure. She also checked the windows, confirming there were no other issues before heading to the bathroom.
As her clothes fell, her fair skin was faintly visible through the frosted glass of the shower door.
Yue Yiyao opened her eyes and saw the glass. She rubbed her eyes, rolled over, and then burrowed back into the quilt. Only her slightly red ears were exposed. The air conditioning here seemed to be set a bit high.
After an unknown period, a soft sound came from the other side of the bed.
The soft mattress dipped slightly. A wave of damp moisture dripped onto Yue Yiyao’s ear as the mattress sunk.
Yue Yiyao shivered. She turned over and saw black, seaweed-like wet hair hanging over Gu Nanqiu’s slender body. A wisp of ungraspable loneliness enveloped her. Her pale face lacked any color, and the corners of her eyes were slightly red.
Her dark gaze was fixed intently on Yue Yiyao, who was lying next to her—focused, yet seeming to watch an inescapable prey.
“Why aren’t you drying your hair?” Yue Yiyao didn’t feel there was anything wrong with Gu Nanqiu’s appearance. She quietly marveled at how beautiful Gu Nanqiu was in her heart. Then, she climbed out of bed. The most pressing matter now was to coax Nanqiu into drying her hair. Although the room was warm, she was still worried about her catching a cold.
She ran into the bathroom, found the hairdryer, found a good spot, and patted the soft, thinly-blanketed chair next to it: “Nanqiu, come quickly, or we’ll have to change the sheets again.”
“I missed you.” Gu Nanqiu spoke without preamble. She didn’t move, still maintaining a kneeling posture, her gaze fixed on Yue Yiyao as before, her eyes slightly dimmed.
“Did you have a nightmare?” This was the only explanation Yue Yiyao could offer, or perhaps Gu Nanqiu had been dragged away by some strange rule without her knowledge.
“Mhm.” Gu Nanqiu’s voice was tinged with a small amount of grievance. Her eyes were redder, and her tone conveyed suppressed sorrow: “I dreamed of many, many people.”
“They all had no faces and stood next to me.”
“They kept saying they were Yue Yiyao, they were Yue Yiyao.”
“But they weren’t at all. They were lying to me, lying to me.”
“You weren’t there at all. They all lied to me.”
Hearing Gu Nanqiu’s voice, Yue Yiyao’s heart softened. She walked over and embraced the slightly trembling Gu Nanqiu.
If the bed got wet, they could just change the sheets. If the clothes got wet, they had a dryer anyway.
“It was a nightmare. I’m here.”
“Feel my temperature, feel my face.”
Forehead touching forehead, their breaths mingled. At this moment, Yue Yiyao could clearly hear Gu Nanqiu’s heartbeat. Then she realized—it was her own heartbeat.
The rain outside seemed to have grown heavier.
A moment later, Yue Yiyao hummed a cheerful song as she pulled open the curtains, led Gu Nanqiu to the seat by the window, and picked up the hairdryer: “Then let me, the real Yue Yiyao, dry your hair now. Does Madam Gu Nanqiu have any requests?”
“After your hair is dry, should we pick out a set of pajamas you like, lie in bed, and watch another movie? Or do you want to take a walk in the sky garden, and then go soak in the hot springs? How about that?”
