- Chapter 62 - Dead Silence—Something's Brewing!
“Yiyao, are you going to City A next week?” A classmate walked up to Yue Yiyao with a form: “We finally have Wednesday afternoon through Friday off, and then Monday is the New Year’s holiday. That makes seven days off! How great would it be to go play in the neighboring city? Although the temperature there is low in winter, it’s better than here, and they even have hot springs.”
Yue Yiyao looked at the materials in her hand. She was already in the final round of revision; a trip sounded nice.
The temperature was getting colder now, and the scarves could be finished next week. She would give one to Gu Nanqiu first, and then mail one to her mother.
As for Wild Autumn, she could ask if she was free this week. The case of Wu Zhen had recently concluded, and the medical examiner had sent Yue Yiyao an “Act of Valor” bonus of over two thousand dollars. That was just enough to pay for Sister Wild Autumn’s scarf.
She flipped through information about City A on her tablet and sent it to her mother.
“Darling, the scenery in this place is nice. Are you planning to go there for fun?” It was still an instant reply, accompanied by a money transfer.
“You must stay in a five-star hotel, darling. If it’s a guesthouse, don’t consider anything under five thousand a night. Be sure to be safe when you go out.”
“Thank you, Mom. I just wanted to ask if you’ve been to City A? Is there anything you need? I can mail it to you along with my scarves.”
Yue Yiyao looked at the tens of thousands of dollars and was a little curious about her mother’s job. In the original novel, Yue Yiyao, who was a background character, never mentioned her family much.
From their brief interactions, Yue Yiyao realized this mother was not as rigid as the simple transactions suggested in the old chat logs. Her mother cared about what she ate for breakfast, bought her new clothes, and taught her lessons on social etiquette. Occasionally, she would also casually send a photo from her side.
However, Yue Yiyao had never seen what her mother looked like.
“Mom, I still have money,” Yue Yiyao replied, transferring the money back: “Mom, are you coming back for New Year’s Day?”
“I’m sorry, darling. I will try my best to come back for the New Year’s Festival and celebrate with you. Just wait a little longer… My work here is a bit busy.”
Yue Yiyao replied considerately: “It can’t be helped. We can video chat then, if possible. If Gu Nanqiu’s mother picks her up for New Year’s, I’ll go play there alone.”
“She won’t… that side… won’t let you go alone.”
The last sentence seemed strange on its own, but Yue Yiyao didn’t dwell on it.
After chatting with her mother about other things, Yue Yiyao noticed someone peering into the classroom doorway. It was a very familiar face: Zhou Qingyi, whom she had seen at the karaoke place before.
She wore a white suit, her hair was meticulously styled, and she stood in the doorway with one hand in her pocket, looking inside.
Yue Yiyao happened to meet Zhou Qingyi’s eyes when she looked up.
Zhou Qingyi scanned the entire classroom, and when she didn’t see the person she was looking for, her brow instantly furrowed.
She’s not looking for Gu Ye, is she?
Yue Yiyao had asked the counselor some time ago and was told that the person had gone back home for treatment.
Yue Yiyao was instantly filled with emotion. In her previous life, she was the one lying in a cold hospital room.
Thinking this, Yue Yiyao looked down and played on her phone, hoping Zhou Qingyi would leave when she couldn’t find anyone.
But the sound of footsteps grew closer. Yue Yiyao heard the surrounding whispers, and the classmate behind her gave her a nudge.
Yue Yiyao looked up to see Zhou Qingyi extending her hand, offering a handshake: “I’m Zhou Qingyi. We met at the karaoke place before.”
After the introduction, she got straight to her point: “Did Gu Ye from your class go out for something, or is she taking a leave of absence? She saved me some time ago, and I specifically came here to thank her.”
“Hello, young CEO Zhou,” Yue Yiyao subconsciously shook her hand: “Gu Ye has dropped out and gone home to recover, but she didn’t share too much information, so I’m not clear on the details.”
Hearing this, Zhou Qingyi sighed softly: “I know, but I can’t find any information about Gu Ye now. I have questions I wanted to ask her, but I can’t find her.”
“She’s like someone who suddenly appeared and then vanished into thin air.”
By the end, Zhou Qingyi’s words carried a complaint, as if she strongly minded Gu Ye’s unannounced departure.
This was the first time Yue Yiyao had heard about anything between Gu Ye and Zhou Qingyi. She didn’t want to overstep Gu Ye by exposing too much of her information. She carefully went over her words in her mind, trying not to sound too harsh: “Young CEO Zhou, you need to be mindful of boundaries. It’s just that Gu Ye’s situation was probably too sudden, so she left in a hurry without time to explain anything.”
“Me, boundaries?” Zhou Qingyi’s voice suddenly turned cold: “I haven’t tied her up directly, and I’m patiently looking for her, wanting to ask her if she’d like to try dating me. Does she dislike me that much?”
As she spoke, Zhou Qingyi’s gaze fell on Yue Yiyao. The coldness in her expression made Yue Yiyao somewhat unable to understand what nonsense she was spewing.
“Gu Nanqiu likes you, and Gu Ye clings to you. Do you secretly feel incredibly pleased?”
“I’ll ask you one last time, do you really not know where Gu Ye went?”
Such words were overly offensive and completely inconsistent with the Zhou Qingyi Yue Yiyao had met at the karaoke place, and different from the one written in the original novel.
“Zhou Qingyi, mind your language. I’m not familiar with you, and there’s no need for me to accept your inexplicable accusations. If you can’t find Gu Ye, use legal channels. If you like her, pursue her normally,” Yue Yiyao calmly countered. She wasn’t good at handling feelings between strangers and just wanted to end this conversation quickly. It was almost time for Nanqiu’s class to end, and she needed to go pick her up.
Hearing Yue Yiyao’s statement, Zhou Qingyi’s expression became quite ugly.
Zhou Qingyi’s arrival had already attracted a lot of attention. The people around them, who initially planned to watch the drama, fell silent when they saw Zhou Qingyi’s demeanor. After all, they didn’t need to provoke the young CEO for the sake of a classmate.
However, some busybody posted the incident on the confession wall, though the version circulating was: “Young CEO Zhou Rushes into Classroom to Find Love—”
Below, people were already curious about the identity of the other protagonist in this romantic dispute.
The class monitor quickly pushed through the crowd. She grabbed Yue Yiyao, signaling her to apologize to Zhou Qingyi.
“I’m so sorry, young CEO Zhou. Is there some misunderstanding here?”
“No misunderstanding.” Yue Yiyao’s face was expressionless: “Saying strange things for no reason. Zhou Qingyi, I know a suitable doctor. I can recommend one to you if you need it.”
Zhou Qingyi’s state clearly showed emotional instability and large fluctuations. She was probably affected by residual SAN loss. Yue Yiyao didn’t want to quibble too much and genuinely intended to offer a referral.
To her surprise, upon hearing this, Zhou Qingyi instantly became like a provoked lion, raising her fist to punch Yue Yiyao: “Who are you calling sick? I just don’t like you. I can make you—”
The punch didn’t land, and the sentence wasn’t finished. Zhou Qingyi saw Yue Yiyao block her hand. Yue Yiyao’s previously calm eyes narrowed. An unidentifiable pressure made Zhou Qingyi instinctively feel that if she provoked this person, something terrible would happen later.
“Make me what?”
The next moment, Gu Nanqiu’s voice cut through the crowd, landing lightly yet firmly in Zhou Qingyi’s ear: “Make her what?”
The surrounding people moved, quickly letting the other protagonist through.
“Gu Ye had to leave for urgent reasons. If you can’t find her, why take out your anger on an unrelated person?” Gu Nanqiu walked up to Zhou Qingyi, and her slender fingers slipped her business card into Zhou Qingyi’s hand: “Remember to see a doctor. Don’t do anything illegal.”
After speaking, she walked back to Yue Yiyao’s side and flashed a sweet smile: “Yiyao, you haven’t replied to my messages for four minutes and thirty-seven seconds—”
“I started scrolling through the confession wall and thought Zhou Qingyi had realized her feelings and wanted to confess to you. I was thinking that as your friend, I’d have to step aside for your future girlfriend and let you two go to City A together.”
Yue Yiyao gently patted Gu Nanqiu’s hand: “Don’t look at random messages. My last contact with Zhou Qingyi was months ago.”
“And also, I currently won’t have a partner, nor do I have time to date. So, are you planning to go to City A?”
Since Gu Nanqiu’s arrival, everyone in the classroom was focused entirely on her. Even the class monitor, who had been trying to mediate with Zhou Qingyi, quietly shut up.
Someone bolder whispered in the back: “How can you blame someone’s former good friend when you can’t find the person? Besides, young CEO Zhou is rich, she’s different. At most, she and Gu Ye were just meal buddies, but the way she talks about it, it sounds like some ambiguous romance.”
With Gu Nanqiu’s presence, Zhou Qingyi also quieted down considerably. At the very least, her emotions seemed less out of control.
The reality was that when Gu Nanqiu approached her, she caught a whiff of a wonderful, indescribable scent, like the one Gu Ye used to carry. In that instant, Zhou Qingyi felt her headache ease. The feeling was the same as when she interacted with Gu Ye, and it even drastically changed her perspective on the world.
Just one brief exposure allowed her to avoid pretending to be normal for over two months.
After all that effort…
Why did she run away?
A strange dark red flashed in Zhou Qingyi’s eyes.
Speaking of which, Gu Nanqiu seems to have the same effect.
And City A seems to have a very interesting business… that person seems particularly good at dog training, and there’s a rumor that she’s been looking for someone…
The farce started absurdly and ended just as suddenly.
Yue Yiyao watched the person leave, then packed her bag and pulled Gu Nanqiu toward their apartment.
On the way, she was still musing: “I really don’t know how Gu Ye and Zhou Qingyi got involved. The Zhou family certainly has deep roots here, but I’ve never heard of such a brazen way of searching for someone.”
“Yes, she’s truly a bit clueless.” Gu Nanqiu noted that Yue Yiyao didn’t seem overly affected by the incident. She asked curiously: “Aren’t you afraid Zhou Qingyi will threaten to make life difficult for you at C University?”
Hearing Nanqiu’s words, Yue Yiyao revealed a cryptic smile: “Nanqiu, that’s illegal, unless I commit a serious disciplinary offense.”
Halfway through their walk, they ended up at a nice restaurant because Gu Nanqiu was tired.
In the private room, the two discussed and finally booked plane tickets to City A together, as well as a hotel with hot springs.
In City A, a woman overlooking the entire city from a floor-to-ceiling window turned to look at the person kneeling nervously beside her: “The birdcage, is it almost finished?”
“I truly can’t wait for my darling to see the gift I’ve prepared for her.”
“I hope she likes it.” Thinking of the expression the person would make, she smiled pleasantly. She was so excited…
