My Possessive Boss Is Unexpectedly Needy - Chapter 36
Chapter 36
Gu Yuan lowered his head and said, “The Old Madam was doing extreme sports in Country K, and a rope accidentally snapped. Fortunately, they had good safety measures in place, but she was still injured. The assistant on the phone wasn’t very clear; they just said the Old Madam is currently in a hospital in Country K.”
Lu Yeyan’s brow furrowed. “Arrange a plane. We’re going to Country K immediately.”
Just as he was about to get up and leave, Lu Yeyan paused. He turned to look at Yu Zining and said, “A-Ning, pack your things and come with me.”
Yu Zining was stunned. This felt like the pace of “meeting the parents.” However, on second thought, it made sense; since they were husband and wife in name, it was only natural to visit his mother.
After a quick pack, Yu Zining and Lu Yeyan boarded the plane without delay and arrived in Country K shortly after.
They were met by an assistant named Feifei. The girl didn’t look very old, but she carried herself with great poise. She cast a glance at Yu Zining. Because of the hurried departure, Lu Yeyan had told Yu Zining to change into men’s clothing.
On the way, Yu Zining kept asking if he should change back into a dress, but Lu Yeyan dismissed the idea, saying it wasn’t necessary.
The two rushed to the hospital. Pushing the door open, they saw an elegant, refined woman lying on the hospital bed. Her fair hands held a phone—she was actually playing mobile games.
Yu Zining stood frozen at the doorway. When the woman saw them enter, a smile bloomed on her face.
“Yanyan, you’re here!”
This woman was Lu Yeyan’s mother, Ye Xi. She seemed to be in no great danger, though one of her feet was propped up in a cast at the foot of the bed.
Lu Yeyan sighed. “Are you alright?”
Ye Xi clicked her tongue. “How can I be alright? My foot is injured! What, just because I’m your mother, you weren’t going to come? Or do you only show up when I’m on my deathbed?”
Lu Yeyan was actually choked for words. This was the first time Yu Zining had seen Lu Yeyan get shut down, and he couldn’t help but want to laugh.
“So, why did you call me here in such a hurry?”
Lu Yeyan really was an “ice-face”; even when facing his own mother, he maintained his cold, stiff facade.
Ye Xi shrugged. “I didn’t intend to call you. They just passed the message to you when I was first admitted. Later, I called the villa to let everyone know I was safe, but you had already departed. Then again, I haven’t seen my son in a while, and I truly missed you.”
Lu Yeyan looked at Ye Xi helplessly. At that moment, Ye Xi noticed Yu Zining standing beside him.
She spoke up, “And this is?”
Just as Lu Yeyan was about to speak, Yu Zining beat him to it: “Hello, Auntie. I am President Lu’s new assistant.”
Yu Zining admitted to himself that he was running away. He didn’t know how to face Ye Xi, let alone how to present his true identity to the world. He didn’t dare stand in the sunlight—at least for now, he was a coward.
Ye Xi nodded and looked Yu Zining over but said nothing more. Lu Yeyan, however, seemed irritated by Yu Zining’s introduction and glared at him with a dark expression.
“By the way, Yanyan, why didn’t you bring your new bride?”
Ye Xi looked at Lu Yeyan with a face full of gossip.
Feeling uneasy, Yu Zining lowered his head and said, “President Lu, I’ll go arrange your hotel first.”
With that, Yu Zining tried to find an excuse to slip away.
Lu Yeyan’s eyes darkened, and he grabbed Yu Zining’s hand. He looked up at Ye Xi and said, “Actually, he is my new wife!”
Ye Xi froze. She scrutinized the thin, frail man before her, and suddenly, she burst into loud laughter. “Oh my, I was wondering why you looked so familiar! I saw your photos in the news before, though you were disguised as a girl back then.”
Instead of being angry, Ye Xi began to tease him. “I still think you look better in men’s clothes.”
Yu Zining looked at Ye Xi in astonishment. “Auntie, you’re not angry that I’m a boy?”
Ye Xi waved her hand dismissively. “What’s wrong with being a boy? What’s the difference if it were a girl? As long as Yanyan likes you, that’s all that matters. And besides, are you still calling me ‘Auntie’?”
Yu Zining smiled and shyly called out, “Mom…”
“Aww, what a good child.”
Ye Xi was very open-minded. She always respected Lu Yeyan’s choices. Just like when trouble arose years ago; she could have taken Lu Yeyan far away to live a quiet life, but because of a single word from him, she had given up a great deal.
“Oh, Yanyan, I have some luggage at the hotel that I didn’t have time to grab. Go get it for me.”
Ye Xi smiled at Lu Yeyan, clearly plotting something in her mind.
Lu Yeyan glanced at Yu Zining and replied, “I’ll arrange for someone to pick it up.”
“Hey, can’t you just make the trip yourself? That hotel is quite nice; you can just book a room while you’re there. Feifei is helping me organize things here at the hospital, and I have Ningning to keep me company. Go on. Be a good boy!”
Ye Xi spoke to Lu Yeyan as if she were coaxing a child, which made Yu Zining want to laugh for some inexplicable reason.
Lu Yeyan glanced at Yu Zining. Is he laughing at me? Feeling strangely annoyed, Lu Yeyan eventually walked out of the ward with a dark face.
After Lu Yeyan left, Ye Xi kept staring at Yu Zining. For some reason, she felt a sense of familiarity. Finally, she chalked it up to what people call “fate.”
Her gaze made Yu Zining a bit uncomfortable. He spoke up awkwardly, “Would you like some water? I can pour some for you.”
Ye Xi shook her head.
“Then I’ll peel an apple for you.”
Ye Xi let out a giggle. “You really are cute. No need; I’m not thirsty or hungry. Just sit down and chat with me.”
Yu Zining sat down.
Ye Xi asked, “Who else is in your family?”
Yu Zining thought of that household. Can it even be called a home? His eyes grew slightly red.
“What’s wrong, child? Something on your mind?”
Ye Xi seemed to sense something.
Yu Zining shook his head and said, “I have my parents and a grandmother who is bedridden. But my father ran away because of debts. I don’t know where they are now.”
Ye Xi sighed and gently patted Yu Zining. “Poor thing. It’s alright. Now that you’re by Yanyan’s side, you won’t have to suffer anymore.”
Yu Zining lowered his eyes. “Yes, Lu Yeyan has indeed treated me well.”
Seeing that Yu Zining was reluctant to speak more about his past, Ye Xi didn’t press further.
After all, the bitterness one has suffered is only truly understood by the person who remembers it; every recollection is a descent back into the abyss.
Ye Xi then continued to chat about this and that, acting almost like a peer, which made Yu Zining feel very comfortable.
“Ningning, Yanyan does have a strange temperament sometimes, but don’t be angry with him. Sigh… actually, he didn’t used to be like this.”
