“Regret it?” Jiang Qiu interrupted her, her eyes darkening slightly. “Miss Yu, don’t you think it’s a bit too late?”

Yu Sheng lifted her head, tears still clinging to her eyelashes.

“I’ve already been foolish once, and I’m not stupid enough to give you a second chance to hurt me. Furthermore, what makes you think I’ll just stand in the same spot waiting for you forever? Miss Yu, I have a fiancée now, and a new life. So, please stay away from me.”

The Omega opened her mouth, looking at the way Jiang Qiu knit her brows, completely intent on drawing a clear line between them. She didn’t know what to say.

Only realizing that her breathing had become slow and tense, Yu Sheng quietly averted her gaze and subconsciously lowered her head. The memories of the past seemed to vividly play out before her eyes. Her regret, grief, and irrationality all submerged her like a rising tide. For a moment, her chest felt suffocated, and her emotions tangled into a complex knot.

Scalding tears spilled onto the back of her hand, a sensation incredibly light, yet Yu Sheng felt as though her heart had been struck by something heavy. The aftershock left her a bit unsteady on her feet, a bitter ache surging in her chest as her trembling fingertips failed to compose themselves for a long time. Lowering her gaze, the Omega muttered in a voice so faint it was barely a whisper.

“But… you were the one who said…”

Jiang Qiu didn’t catch it clearly, nor did she care what Yu Sheng was saying. She felt she had made herself clear enough; there was no need to add more harsh, biting words just to maintain the absolute finality of this parting of ways.

When she decided to throw away everything from the past and start anew, running into Yu Sheng again had been completely outside of Jiang Qiu’s expectations. She admitted she hadn’t forgotten the past they shared, but she was already prepared to live her new life, yet this Omega just had to appear at this exact moment.

Only, when she looked at Yu Sheng’s reaction and saw the reflection of the Omega’s sadness, whether genuine or fake, her heart still ached.

Handing over the handkerchief without a second thought, Jiang Qiu let out a silent sigh and added, “Stop crying.”

With that, she placed the handkerchief on the table instead. The Alpha avoided any further contact with her, turning around to leave.

Yu Sheng wanted to grab Jiang Qiu’s hand, but in her frantic haste, she bumped against the edge of the table. A sharp pain shot through her leg, causing the Omega to gasp. Immediately following that, the wine glass on the table toppled over due to the violent shaking, and the cocktail of which she hadn’t taken a single sip, spilled completely out, leaving absolutely no time for a buffer.

The Omega’s first instinct was to rescue the handkerchief, but she was still a moment too late. That small, jasmine colored square handkerchief was already mostly soaked, its faint fragrance overwritten by the smell of the cocktail. For a moment, Yu Sheng felt utterly disheveled. Jiang Qiu’s figure had long since vanished, and she stood frozen, not chasing after her again.

A server came over to help clean up the mess on the table, casting a couple of extra glances at her while taking away the glass. Once the table was wiped down, the server seemingly couldn’t hold back any longer and asked rather gossipingly:

“Excuse me, ma’am, may I ask what your relationship is with our boss?”

Yu Sheng clenched the handkerchief tightly. She put her glasses back on, and though the redness around her eyes remained, she feigned composure, saying casually and indifferently.

“A debtor relationship.”

Jiang Qiu’s phone received a new message from the bartender. The Alpha tapped it open, and the person asked her.

[Boss, does that lady owe you a lot of money?]

Jiang Qiu frowned and replied: [? Where did you hear such groundless rumors.]

[Boss, just say the word, and when it’s time to settle the bill later, I’ll charge that lady an exorbitant price.]

Jiang Qiu: ?

Where was this even coming from?

The Alpha sat in the driver’s seat and sent a voice note over. “No need to charge her. Put it on my tab.”

The other party waited over two minutes before replying again. [So it’s a debt of love. Understood, Boss.]

Jiang Qiu’s lips twitched. She simply chose not to reply anymore, when dealing with this group of employees who were more enthusiastic about gossip than making money, explaining would only make things worse.

She didn’t start the car immediately. Jiang Qiu leaned back against the seat and closed her eyes to rest her mind. Facing Yu Sheng, she barely maintained her composure, but she would still be swayed by the other party’s emotions. She would soften up just like before, and just like in the past, she couldn’t find a reason to blame the Omega.

From beginning to end, she was only blaming herself.

Playing the role of a heartless person was truly a bit exhausting; Jiang Qiu felt somewhat drained right now. The imagined scenario of speaking harshly to Yu Sheng had actually happened, but she didn’t feel the slightest bit of satisfaction. Instead, her mind was completely filled with the image of the Omega crying.

Had her words been too harsh?

Or had her expression been too severe?

Her thoughts were tangled in a mess. The Alpha sighed again, lifting her hand to touch her own cheek, trying to calm her emotions. Although it did seem like she had overacted a bit, luckily, the result appeared to be exactly what she wanted… right?

From today onward, it would be best if she and Yu Sheng stuck strictly to business.

She no longer had the courage to be deceived a second time.

Most people in the company knew about Yu Kunian’s honeymoon trip, but the formal transfer order dropping a new VP was only issued two days before the trip, in the afternoon.

As the new official taking office, Jiang Qiu didn’t arrive on time.

Since Yu Kunian wanted her to leave a bad impression on those board members, she didn’t mind making it a little worse.

Later, just when the people in the company thought the VP wouldn’t be coming today, Jiang Qiu caught them completely off guard. At two in the afternoon, she took the elevator up to the Research and Development department, her temporary office was on that floor.

Before stepping out of the elevator, she was on the phone with Yu Kunian. “So what you mean is, you want me to be excessive and trigger dissatisfaction within the company?”

“As long as projects other than the new product don’t fall through, do whatever you want,” Yu Kunian responded over the line.

Jiang Qiu let out a laugh, carefully pondering how a villain ought to behave. With a ding, the elevator arrived. She hung up the phone and walked out, sizing up the employees of the R&D department.

The Alpha was dressed very casually today in a light colored coat and casual trousers, for the moment, no one paid her any special attention. Jiang Qiu’s gaze slowly swept across the room, finally stopping inside her small office, where a familiar figure was busy at work.

Yu Sheng was moving a cabinet under the desk by herself. The office was completely empty; it seemed no one had shown any gesture of welcome for her sudden arrival.

Jiang Qiu frowned slightly. Stepping closer, she pushed open the office door and said.

“The work of the Administrative Department, why are you the one doing it?”

Yu Sheng apparently hadn’t expected her to come. Two days had passed since their last meeting, and the memory of that less than pleasant argument made the Omega feel a bit awkward for a moment. But Jiang Qiu clearly only intended to discuss business. As for personal matters, presumably, there was no longer any need for them to speak of them.

Thus, meeting Jiang Qiu’s aloof gaze, Yu Sheng froze for a moment before saying:

“When I got here, your office hadn’t been cleaned up. It was piled high with clutter.”

“No need to do it.” Jiang Qiu turned around. “You came here to learn, not to do tasks for the Administrative Department.”

Yu Sheng let out an “oh” and obediently listened. Soon after, she heard Jiang Qiu step out of the office and instruct her to book a meeting room and gather the project leaders of the R&D department for a meeting.

Yu Kunian had sent Yu Sheng to act as Jiang Qiu’s assistant in name, so she naturally had to follow Jiang Qiu’s orders. However, she was just as excluded as Jiang Qiu was. In fact, when she had asked about the office earlier, she had been deliberately ignored. Now that she was being told to summon people for a meeting, Yu Sheng couldn’t help but hesitate for a moment.

If it were a matter of using a bad temper and some tactics to straighten out these people’s attitudes, it wasn’t that Yu Sheng didn’t know how, it was because Jiang Qiu was here, so she couldn’t act that way.

According to her understanding, Jiang Qiu didn’t particularly like Omegas who were overly aggressive.

However, before she could think of a solution to this problem, someone stood up ahead of time, looked toward Jiang Qiu, and spoke. “You must be the newly appointed VP, President Jiang, right?”

The Alpha’s leg was leaning halfway against the doorframe. The smile on her face deepened by a fraction as she gave a slight nod, saying warmly, “Indeed I am.”

She had been standing here for at least five minutes before someone finally spoke up to ask her a question. Anyone could tell this was a deliberate cold shoulder.

“Our apologies, President Jiang.” The other party remained standing where she was, returning a smile. “You weren’t previously engaged in this industry, so you might not understand the R&D department very well. Every single one of our project teams shoulders heavy responsibilities. We truly don’t have the time to participate in inefficient meetings. After all, time is far too precious for us.”

The underlying meaning was clear: You’re an outsider with no resume, no experience, who got in through connections. You have no right to order us around. Furthermore, you probably won’t have anything of substance to say in a meeting anyway, it’s nothing more than putting on an act, so why waste our time?

As soon as these words were spoken, the entire floor fell into a dead silence. Even the sound of typing vanished.

Jiang Qiu smiled.

She had been worried about not having a scapegoat to help her play the bad guy, and unexpectedly, someone had delivered themselves right to her door. Presumably, these people thought she was a soft, spineless target, and since the R&D department was the core of Zhaoming Biotech, she wouldn’t dare discipline them easily.

The Alpha continued to smile without showing any hint of anger. Her tone was casual. “What is your name?”

The other party didn’t show a shred of fear. “Lu Qing.”

Jiang Qiu remembered this person. She was a veteran employee of the company, the former head of the R&D department. She had failed to secure the promotion to director last year, and this year, she had several quite promising projects currently underway.

Lu Qing’s capabilities were excellent. Even if the company executives disliked her, they wouldn’t easily trip her up, because if she left, half of the R&D department would fall into chaos.

But Jiang Qiu glanced at Yu Sheng, and then said to Lu Qing with a beam:

“What a coincidence. I happen to be planning to establish an external R&D communications department, with a 10% staff reallocation from the R&D department. I would like to promote you to Deputy Director. Hand over your current projects to someone else; your future workload will consist of handling external interviews for the company.”

“What did you say?”

Lu Qing was clearly incredulous at this decision. Her current projects were already nearing completion. Forcing her to hand them over to someone else at this crucial time just to handle some ridiculous interviews was nothing short of a demotion disguised as a promotion.

The entire R&D department broke out into an uproar. Everyone was astonished, and everyone was terrified. This was undoubtedly the most unbelievable display of “killing the chicken to warn the monkey,” because if she even dared to seize Lu Qing’s projects, then this newly appointed VP was far more than just a novice, she simply didn’t understand the operations of the R&D department at all.

Yu Sheng finally snapped out of it amidst the clamor. Lowering her voice, she said to Jiang Qiu. “Jiang… President Jiang, you can’t do this.”
