- Chapter 5 - Two years is long enough for me to forget a lot of thi...
Jiang Qiu knew her own heart all too well.
The resentment and indignation all stemmed from the fact that Yu Sheng didn’t love her, yet she herself just happened to love Yu Sheng too deeply. Blaming this and that, the Alpha ultimately still blamed herself, why could she just not forget this one person? She blamed Yu Sheng for actually just using her.
If she could, she would even be willing to cast aside all her self-esteem for Yu Sheng, but the prerequisite was that the Omega loved her, the prerequisite was that during the year they dated, Yu Sheng hadn’t harbored ulterior motives. Jiang Qiu had every reason to be this harsh, after all, Yu Sheng ought to feel guilty.
As it appeared right now, Yu Sheng showed no remorse whatsoever.
Then by what right should she accept Yu Sheng trying to get close to her again?
Only after regulating her breathing did Jiang Qiu deliberately avert her gaze, her tone faint as she said, “I don’t speak very pleasantly, Miss Yu. Please bear with me.”
With that, Jiang Qiu took Wen Yan’s hand, her tone returning to a peaceful calm. “Let’s go.”
Wen Yan stood frozen in place for a moment, an unusual expression appearing on her face as she looked at Jiang Qiu. Although she wasn’t in a good position to interfere given the current situation, she still held onto the Alpha’s arm and didn’t move, speaking softly.
“Little Miss Yu, I’m sorry, we…”
“It’s alright, I was the one being presumptuous.” Meeting Wen Yan’s concerned gaze, Yu Sheng forced a slight tug at the corners of her mouth. “I won’t disturb your private time. I’ll take my leave first.”
The Omega turned around immediately, but her footsteps stumbled for two paces before she hurriedly left the shop. Before Wen Yan could say anything else, Yu Sheng’s figure had already vanished. Beside her, Jiang Qiu also lifted her eyes to watch her leave, her brow furrowing even tighter.
“Are you angry?” Amidst the brief moment of daze, Wen Yan’s voice suddenly rang out.
Jiang Qiu released Wen Yan’s hand before answering her, “Why would I be angry over someone I’m not familiar with?” Yet her expression was abnormal, and she repeated herself somewhat defensively, “We’ve only known each other for a day, after all.”
Following that, the Alpha deliberately changed the subject, looking back toward the nightstand from earlier. “Xiao Yan, do you want the light color or the dark color?”
Standing behind Jiang Qiu, Wen Yan’s lips moved slightly, but in the end, she silently swallowed her words back down and responded, “The light colored one.”
Jiang Qiu nodded and found a store clerk to finalize the order. Originally, they had agreed to pick out all the missing furniture for the Omega’s new home today, but after running into Yu Sheng, the Alpha became somewhat absentminded, all of which was witnessed by Wen Yan.
However, it wasn’t until they were having lunch at noon that Wen Yan subtly expressed that she could handle picking out the furniture by herself. Jiang Qiu finally realized her own lapse in composure, shook her head, and said.
“You are about to be my fiancée. What sense does it make for me to leave you alone when I have the time to accompany you?”
Weren’t these words also meant to convince herself?
Wen Yan lowered her eyes. “If you…”
The Omega’s inquiry hesitated for a long time, perpetually caught in a dilemma. Jiang Qiu stared at her and could probably guess a few things; after all, anyone could notice that she became abnormal the moment she saw Yu Sheng these past two days. Therefore, Jiang Qiu interrupted Wen Yan’s words and asked.
“What I said yesterday about getting engaged as soon as possible, how have you considered it?”
“It’s a bit too rushed.” Wen Yan had thought it over.
Jiang Qiu didn’t insist on that suggestion either. “Then how about the end of this year? There’s still a little over a month left.”
“Would the beginning of next year be alright?” Wen Yan asked.
Jiang Qiu nodded. “Alright.”
Thoroughly brushing Yu Sheng’s figure out of her mind, Jiang Qiu settled her heart. She looked at the Omega in front of her, her emotions calming down quite a bit, and continued.
“Xiao Yan, taking you away from New York and marrying you are both deliberate decisions I’ve made. No external conditions will affect that, rest assured.”
Wen Yan raised her eyes. “I am assured.”
“Also, think a bit more for yourself,” Jiang Qiu instructed her.
After a long silence, Wen Yan’s gaze fell upon Jiang Qiu’s faint smile. A soft “Mhm” came a beat too slow in response, but unexpectedly, it was interrupted by a waiter bringing over their dishes. It was unclear if Jiang Qiu had even heard it.
The lunch hour allowed Jiang Qiu to recover completely. She spent the entire afternoon selecting items at the furniture plaza, thoroughly revamping all kinds of furniture for Wen Yan’s new home, making the day’s frantic running around worthwhile. Afterward, Jiang Qiu drove Wen Yan home. The sky was gradually darkening, and since the Omega was too exhausted and needed to rest, Jiang Qiu didn’t disturb her further.
As for herself, she wasn’t tired or sleepy yet. After checking the time, she turned the car around and drove to the tavern she owned. Having not visited for quite a while, Jiang Qiu had been a bit worried about whether any operational issues had arisen, but fortunately, business here had always been neither too hot nor too cold. As long as the regular customers didn’t completely disappear, everything was considered normal.
At this hour, the tavern had just begun its business for the evening, and the music playing was still relatively soothing. As Jiang Qiu walked toward the bar counter, she heard the Beta bartender standing there speak up in a cheerful, teasing tone.
“Boss, you’re finally back. I thought you were about to forget about this piece of property.”
“Rest assured, I won’t forget it. I still have employees to pay wages to.” Jiang Qiu sat down. “How has business been lately?”
“It’s always the old regulars. Occasionally it gets crowded, but most of the time it doesn’t fill up. Speaking of which, Boss, should we run some kind of event to attract new customers?”
“No need.”
Jiang Qiu had never intended to cultivate this tavern into some packed, overflowing venue in the first place. After all, opening this shop was merely to pass the time, she didn’t care much about how much profit it made. Furthermore, the clientele here was fairly stable, and Jiang Qiu felt that the current state was perfectly fine.
“Whatever the boss says goes.” The bartender had only brought it up casually anyway. “Oh right, Boss, someone came looking for you around midnight yesterday. A new customer. We don’t know what it was about, and she wouldn’t say when asked, she just insisted she wanted to find you.”
“Did she leave a name?” Jiang Qiu took the beverage handed over by the other party and asked without a ripple in her expression.
“No… oh, it looks like she’s back again. Boss, the one who just walked through the door.”
Jiang Qiu set down the glass in her hand and turned her head to look. Coincidentally, the soothing music overhead abruptly came to a stop, and the surroundings instantly fell quiet, while her heart violently skipped a beat. Under the dim lighting, Jiang Qiu could still see very clearly, the newcomer was Yu Sheng.
The Alpha’s breathing hitched for a moment. For a time, she didn’t know what expression to face Yu Sheng with as she walked closer and closer to her, her mind went entirely blank.
The moment Yu Sheng sat down in the seat right next to Jiang Qiu, the Alpha snapped out of her daze as if waking from a dream. Leaving her original spot and ignoring Yu Sheng’s gaze, she said to the bartender behind the counter, “Attend to the customer.”
Who could have guessed that just as she stepped out, she would hear the Omega behind her say, “I want a glass of Jasmine Abundant Autumn.”
Jiang Qiu halted.
The bartender froze for a moment before saying, “I’m sorry, esteemed guest, we don’t have that drink on our menu.”
Yu Sheng naturally knew they didn’t have it, because that was a drink Jiang Qiu had once mixed solely for her alone. Therefore, she was speaking to Jiang Qiu, and naturally, she stared at Jiang Qiu’s back, waiting for a response.
The music inside the shop started up once again, drowning out the Alpha’s heartbeat. Jiang Qiu slowly turned back around. “Miss Yu, we don’t sell that.”
“Can’t you mix a glass for me?” Yu Sheng asked her.
Jiang Qiu: “As you can see, our shop’s bartender doesn’t know how to.”
“But you do.” Yu Sheng’s eyes burned intently.
The air stagnated for a second. Only then did Jiang Qiu glance at Yu Sheng. “I’m truly sorry, Miss Yu, I forgot how to mix it a long time ago.”
“You wouldn’t forget.”
“Two years is long enough for me to forget a lot of things.”
Jiang Qiu met Yu Sheng’s gaze. Her eyes were very calm, like a lake without a single ripple, and her voice was light and airy. The Omega in front of her was clearly incredulous. Yu Sheng got down from the stool, her lightly trembling fingertips gripping the edge of the bar counter. She wanted to step closer, but the Alpha stepped backward.
It was as if a galaxy stood between them. Yu Sheng lowered her head slightly, dropping her voice to ask, “Then what do you still remember?”
“There was someone who made me reshape my entire concept of trust.” The corners of Jiang Qiu’s mouth tugged up slightly as she averted her gaze with a faint, detached expression.
Yu Sheng wanted to walk toward her, but accidentally tripped slightly over a chair. Amidst her unstable footing, Jiang Qiu’s hand instinctively lifted, freezing halfway in midair. But before the Omega could notice this scene, the Alpha swiftly retracted her hand, turned her body aside, clenched her fist, and let out a silent smile of self-mockery.
Yu Sheng stabilized herself. Seeing Jiang Qiu avoiding her as if she were a torrential beast, she couldn’t help but ask her, “Can we really not sit down and have a proper talk?”
“What does Miss Yu want to talk about?” Jiang Qiu countered casually. “I don’t know what else there is for us to talk about.”
“Just catching up, like friends.”
“Does Miss Yu think I am the type of person who can nonchalantly sit down and catch up on old times with you?”
“Must we draw such a clear line between us?”
“Otherwise?” A surge of irritation suddenly flared up within Jiang Qiu because of this sentence. She glared at Yu Sheng with a cold face and jeered, “Could it be that Miss Yu wants me to settle scores with you, to see how I can extract the losses of that year from you with interest?”
“Alright.” Yu Sheng took off her glasses, her voice unstable as she nodded, her two lips trembling slightly.
Hearing this, Jiang Qiu furrowed her brows tightly. She didn’t believe the Omega had given this any deep thought, such a hasty answer instead made her seem quite ridiculous. “Yu Sheng, do you think I’m someone who is easy to provoke?”
Yu Sheng walked right up to her front. “I am serious. Now, can we sit down and talk?”
Jiang Qiu laughed out of pure anger. “Fine.”
Finding a seat near the window to sit down, Yu Sheng couldn’t drink her Jasmine Abundant Autumn, so in the end she could only order a glass of Green Grape Lychee Wine. Jiang Qiu ordered nothing at all, planning to leave the moment she finished speaking.
However, the Alpha truly didn’t intend to dispute the actual financial losses of that past year. The money was spent of her own free will, and it was entirely understandable that Yu Sheng had used her identity to flaunt her power. She never took back things she had given away, she mainly just couldn’t accept that thorough, absolute deception.
At this moment, Jiang Qiu merely wanted to see what kind of intention Yu Sheng had by being this persistent.
“I can convert all the losses into cash and give it back to you,” Yu Sheng spoke first.
Jiang Qiu said, “I don’t lack money, Miss Yu.”
“Then what do you want?” Yu Sheng thought about it, her eyelashes trembling lightly. “The things you gave me… I can’t find them anymore. There’s no way to return them to you.”
“Thrown away means thrown away, Miss Yu doesn’t need to pretend they can’t be found.” Jiang Qiu’s face darkened completely. “I’m afraid on the very day of our breakup, you couldn’t wait to discard all of them.”
