- My Omega Ex Begs For A Second Chance After Our Reunion
- Chapter 4 - Are We That Close?
The tips of her fingers still held the cool temperature from the orange juice bottle. Jiang Qiu was certain she was clear-minded, yet right now, her mind was entirely filled with Yu Sheng.
The brief meeting just outside the banquet hall had once again caused the Alpha to involuntarily reminisce about the past. Consequently, Jiang Qiu really didn’t want to have too much contact with Yu Sheng before her engagement ceremony with Wen Yan.
“Why?” Yu Kunian hadn’t expected Jiang Qiu to refuse. “Are you worried no one will manage your pub?”
“No.” Jiang Qiu tried to come up with another excuse, but the fact was she had nothing important to do. Her schedule was usually quite free, and she couldn’t find a single passable reason to use.
But even so, she would absolutely never tell Yu Kunian about her past with Yu Sheng.
Yu Kunian asked, “Then what is it? I recall you haven’t been busy lately, right?”
“I need to accompany Xiao Yan to get familiar with Lihua City.” The Alpha was left with only this clumsy excuse.
Yu Kunian replied, “We’re inviting you to be the VP, but we’re not actually asking you to clock in every day. You don’t have to show up at the office at all. If anyone asks, you can just say you have other business to attend to outside. You only need to show up and intentionally drop a few hints when Yu Sheng comes to the company to help out. It’s very simple and won’t take up too much of your time.”
It sounded as though Jiang Qiu had no room to refuse at all. Besides, they had agreed upon this plan together from the very beginning, and the Alpha couldn’t just abandon it halfway. Thus, Jiang Qiu sighed several times in succession and could only agree to it.
“Fine. The day before you leave for your trip, I’ll go to the company and show my face as the VP.”
“Thanks.” Yu Kunian let out a chuckle. “I’ll bring you back a gift from my trip to Germany. If you need anything else, don’t be polite, just send me a list and I’ll buy it.”
“Alright, alright, it’s already this late. Since we’re done talking business, you should hurry back to accompany your Teacher Song. I have other things to handle on my end. Bye-bye.” Jiang Qiu urged as she hung up the phone, letting out another sigh immediately after.
It feels like a twisted fate, Jiang Qiu thought to herself.
She wanted to stay away from Yu Sheng, but things just wouldn’t go according to her wishes. The Alpha stared at her phone for a long while before finally accepting that friend request. No matter what Yu Sheng’s intentions were right now, she had to know that she was someone with a fiancée and must not lose her sanity because of Yu Sheng. Regarding this fact, Jiang Qiu closed her eyes and repeatedly reminded herself several times.
It was indeed very late, and the rain showed no signs of stopping. After calming her emotions, Jiang Qiu stood up and walked over to Wen Yan’s side. “What are you looking at?”
“Are you done handling your business?” Wen Yan looked over at her, then pointed a finger toward a direction outside the window. “I just saw a recruitment advertisement being broadcast on the scrolling big screen of that building over there. I want to try and see if there are any part time jobs available.”
“You want to work?” Jiang Qiu was somewhat surprised.
Wen Yan nodded. “I can’t rely on you for all of my expenses. I need to find a job to earn money.”
“There’s no need, Xiao Yan.” Jiang Qiu reached out and gently gripped her shoulders, saying softly, “Since you’ve come here, it’s my responsibility to take good care of you. Whether it’s before or after our marriage, you don’t have to worry about money.”
“Are you trying to say that you will support me?”
“This is my duty.”
“That’s not it.” Wen Yan looked up at her, her voice trembling slightly. Her words hesitated for a few moments before she asked with a touch of embarrassment, “Before leaving New York, my uncle and the others privately asked your family for money, and it was a substantial amount, right?”
“You…”
“Therefore, I can’t rely on you to support me even more. I’ve already caused you a lot of trouble, and I don’t want to depend on you for everything here in Lihua City as well. If we get married, as your wife, I don’t want to be someone who does nothing all day.”
Jiang Qiu fell silent for a long moment. In truth, she had long prepared herself to take full responsibility for Wen Yan’s material life. The Alpha had brought the Omega back to Lihua City with the initial purpose of letting Wen Yan properly enjoy her future. Even if Wen Yan did nothing at all, not only could she afford it, but she would also support it with both hands.
But clearly, Wen Yan had not yet developed an absolute sense of security with her. Jiang Qiu understood that Wen Yan needed time, so she didn’t oppose her any further, simply nodding her head.
“Then we will go according to your wishes.”
“Thank you,” Wen Yan said earnestly, looking at Jiang Qiu.
Jiang Qiu raised her hand and stroked her head. “This is your freedom. What I say are only suggestions; there’s no need to thank me.”
Wen Yan didn’t say anything more. The sensation on the top of her head brought her a few touches of warmth. What she was actually thanking was Jiang Qiu’s kindness toward her. Whether it was bringing her away from New York or making advance preparations for her arrival here, this Alpha had consistently been very good to her.
Jiang Qiu checked the time and suddenly remembered what she had wanted to say earlier. “How about I take you to look at furniture tomorrow?”
“What other furniture do we need to buy?” Wen Yan asked.
Jiang Qiu replied, “A desk, a nightstand, and chairs. While we’re at it, we can also pick out some curtains you like to replace the old ones. After all, this place was only simply set up. A new home requires many additions, and the style should naturally follow your preferences.”
“Would it be too…”
“They are all necessities, we shouldn’t settle, nor should we wait. In any case, before you start earning money, just leave the household expenses to me, okay?” Jiang Qiu smiled at her. “Spending money on my future wife is something I am entirely willing to do.”
The Alpha’s gaze was incredibly sincere, making it impossible for Wen Yan to voice any words of polite refusal. In the end, she could only softly agree.
With the matter settled, Jiang Qiu took her unfinished orange juice and prepared to leave. After instructing the Omega to go to bed early, she pushed open the door and departed. Once the sound of the closing door rang out, the living room instantly returned to a blanket of silence. Wen Yan felt a momentary trance. When she turned to look, only the electronic screen outside broadcasting alternating advertisements remained bright and impossible to ignore, it was just that due to the rain streaks on the window, that bright light had become a few fractions blurrier.
She couldn’t adjust to the overseas time zone for the moment, but the gloomy sky failed to bring any sleepiness to Wen Yan. She returned to the sofa, looking at this brand-new home. It felt as if she had completely cut ties with her home in New York.
Yet she knew that in reality, ever since her two mothers passed away and she left France to live under someone else’s roof in New York, the warmth of a home had already vanished completely. She hadn’t felt the sensation of a home in a long time.
Now, she hoped that things could change here.
Early the next morning, Jiang Qiu and Wen Yan went to a furniture store together. She hadn’t expected that they would encounter Yu Sheng there as well.
Jiang Qiu had just taken a fancy to a nightstand and was discussing with the Omega whether or not to buy it when she turned her head and caught sight of Yu Sheng, who was also picking out furniture all by herself. The Alpha’s gaze subconsciously froze, and even the words she was speaking faltered for a moment. But she quickly snapped back to her senses, her expression showing no anomalies as she asked Wen Yan.
“Should we go take a look at another shop?”
“No need to go through the trouble, let’s just buy this one.” Wen Yan was still looking down and hadn’t discovered Yu Sheng’s figure.
It wasn’t until Yu Sheng suddenly walked closer to them and proactively spoke up: “What a coincidence, Miss Wen.”
The words were directed at Wen Yan, but her gaze fell upon Jiang Qiu. Yu Sheng gave a gentle, amiable smile toward Jiang Qiu. “I didn’t expect to run into you two here today.”
“What a coincidence.” Wen Yan first glanced at Jiang Qiu. Seeing that the Alpha had no intention of replying, she continued to respond, “Miss Yu, what furniture are you here to buy?”
“I’m not used to sleeping on the bed at home, so I wanted to pick out a suitable one,” Yu Sheng said.
“Then Miss Yu can take her time picking. We’ve already made our choice, so we won’t chat further.” Jiang Qiu interrupted their exchange, saying a sentence expressionlessly, and subsequently pulled Wen Yan to leave.
“Miss Jiang, why are you avoiding me like the plague?” Looking at her retreating figure, Yu Sheng couldn’t help but ask out loud.
Jiang Qiu’s footsteps halted. That form of address, “Miss Jiang,” was truly too grating on the ears. She couldn’t help but let out a cold sneer, then turned around to look at Yu Sheng, her eyes filled with indifferent mockery.
“I’ll still say the same thing. Miss Yu, are we that close?”
“Are we not close?” Yu Sheng asked her back.
“Yesterday was the first time we met, wasn’t it?”
“Yes.” Yu Sheng stared at Jiang Qiu, and it took a long time before she spat out that single word.
“Then what other doubts do you have, Miss Yu?” Jiang Qiu took a step closer toward Yu Sheng. “Besides, is there any reason that absolutely requires me to speak more with you? Since we aren’t close, there’s no need to greet each other when we meet in the future. After all, we are currently still just strangers, and it also avoids causing any misunderstandings with my fiancée.”
The Alpha’s words were laced with thorns, which anyone could hear. Yet when Yu Sheng looked into Jiang Qiu’s eyes, she was instantly rendered speechless.
Perhaps Yu Sheng should have remained a stranger to Jiang Qiu from the beginning, but she couldn’t control herself. She wanted to look at Jiang Qiu a few more times, wanted to say a few more words, and wanted to ask about this Alpha’s current situation, but she had no right.
What the Omega wanted to say was choked back by the word “fiancée” in Jiang Qiu’s speech. All the words about to leave her mouth turned into a gloomy rain in an instant, drenching her heart, and then a thick fog wrapped around her entire being, making it incredibly suffocating.
They were clearly people who had dated before, yet now they had become exceptionally distant, as if they would remain forever out of reach.
Yu Sheng felt the rims of her eyes turn sour. She lowered her gaze before speaking again: “My sister said she wants me to consult you about matters regarding the company.”
What a clumsy excuse. It was also her only excuse at the moment.
“Right now is my personal time. Does Miss Yu feel this is an appropriate time to discuss public business?” Jiang Qiu’s tone was cold, sounding entirely heartless. “Miss Yu, I’ll trouble you to keep public and private matters separate.”
Yu Sheng fell silent. The communication between them could only amount to the way their friend chat box currently remained blank; private matters couldn’t be discussed, and public business required finding the right time.
This kind of feeling made her powerless. Things had slipped from her control, and Jiang Qiu had also become an existence she found difficult to approach.
The atmosphere became very stiff. Jiang Qiu’s words carried nearly two years’ worth of resentment and anger. For some reason, as long as she faced Yu Sheng, she couldn’t keep her emotions calm.
After all the intentionally harsh words were spoken, Jiang Qiu knitted her brows, trying to use Yu Sheng’s past exploitation of her to quiet her currently chaotic state of mind. She took a step backward, but Yu Sheng raised her head to look at her, and those eyes behind the lenses had unexpectedly turned pitiful.
Jiang Qiu’s fingertips curled into her palm. Feigning impatience, she asked, “What, did these few words make Miss Yu feel wronged?”
In reality, her heart couldn’t help but throb with pain. But rationality demanded that she stay far away from Yu Sheng, and never again be blinded by this Omega who was so accustomed to putting on an act.
