My Marriage Partner is a Crazy Mermaid - Chapter 28
Chapter 28: Secret
The waiter preparing to serve the food nearby was trembling. Having watched the argument, he stood there hesitantly with the dishes, not daring to approach.
Meng Ke was annoyed. she didn’t even want to waste breath scolding Meng Yingxue; she just wanted to get rid of her. Her expression was dark and grim. The waiter was terrified, fearing that “when the city gate catches fire, the fish in the moat suffer”.
Meng Ke adjusted her expression and beckoned the waiter over.
The waiter quickly served the dishes, arranged them, and hurried away. Meng Ke watched his retreating back, was it really that exaggerated?
In her anger, Meng Ke had forgotten that she had water dripping from her head, her hair was soaked, and her eyes were cold and predatory, looking as if she might go out and commit murder in the next second.
After finishing her meal, Meng Ke tidied herself up briefly. Walking back toward the hospital, she saw a flower shop still open downstairs. On a whim, she walked in.
The shop had pre-packaged bouquets, mostly lilies and carnations—the warm, typical sorts suitable for visiting patients. But Meng Ke felt none of those suited Xie Yuhan. After looking around, she took a fancy to a bouquet of Ice Blue roses in the corner.
“Boss, I’ll take this one.”
“I’m sorry, Miss, I made this at noon and it has some flaws. Two of the flowers in the back have started to fall apart.”
“It’s fine. I want this one.”
Meng Ke entered the hospital clutching the bouquet. The hospital was quiet at midday. Not knowing if Xie Yuhan was asleep, Meng Ke tiptoed into the ward and found that she had indeed drifted off.
She carefully placed the flowers on the nightstand and walked to the side room for caregivers. Meng Ke was tired, but she didn’t want to sleep. Sitting in a chair, she began processing her messages.
Things at Minggang were completely resolved. The three birds were in high spirits. Over the past day, more than ten short videos had been posted in the group chat. There were clips of them eating and sleeping. Shao Rou had finally captured the video of the Woodcock’s bobbing walk, pairing it with a caption about how its WeChat step count and the distance traveled hadn’t added up all night.
Meng Ke then checked her group chat with her best friends. Recently, Luo Miao had some free time; aside from investigating Meng Ke’s biological parents every day, she spent her time being abstract in the group.
Wu Siyi, on the other hand, was very quiet. Meng Ke asked if that entertainment industry scandal had been resolved.
The trending searches had been explosive for two days, and Wu Siyi was nearly torn apart by her rival’s fans. However, that wasn’t the important part; Meng Ke was concerned about her relationship with the Film Queen. Since the trending topics had lasted two days, many fans had dug up the fact that she had an unrequited crush. Meng Ke worried about her mental state, given that the crush had seemingly failed.
Future Film Queen: I’m fine. The company issued a statement, though entertainment industry statements are useless—they can’t stop those rumor-mongering fans.
Future Film Queen: Actually, as long as the stuff about the child is cleared up, the rest isn’t important.
Future Film Queen: My agent got me a new script. I’m joining the set tomorrow. Don’t worry about me.
Meng Ke didn’t know much about the entertainment industry, but because of Wu Siyi, she looked into it. Their company’s statement said that Film Queen Qiao was a senior in the industry whom everyone admired. Information and gossip in the industry cycle through quickly; after a month, it would likely be forgotten. Her management company had business ties with her family group, so they wouldn’t harm her. Meng Ke didn’t ask further.
After two hours, there was movement from the hospital bed. Meng Ke stood up and went over.
Xie Yuhan was reaching for the bouquet. Seeing her approach, Xie Yuhan pulled her hand back. “You bought these?”
“Mm,” Meng Ke hummed in response.
Xie Yuhan took a greedy breath of the fragrance. The natural scent of the plants was very comforting. After lying down for half a day, her body felt much better.
“Come look at the wedding plans.”
Only then did Meng Ke notice the laptop behind her.
“Do you want to get out of bed for some fresh air? You’ve been lying here for almost a day,” Meng Ke said. “We can pick a plan later.”
“The wheelchair isn’t here,” Xie Yuhan said.
“I saw one on the first floor when I came up.”
“Then how do I get to the first floor?”
“I’ll carry you,” Meng Ke said directly.
Xie Yuhan didn’t react immediately. She looked at Meng Ke for two seconds, the corners of her mouth curling up slightly as she nodded. “Fine.”
Only when she reached the bedside did Meng Ke remember: “Did you change your clothes?”
“I did,” Xie Yuhan replied.
This wasn’t the first time Meng Ke had carried Xie Yuhan, but every previous time had been by chance. This was the first time she had asked so formally and received a positive answer. Instead, Meng Ke felt a bit hesitant. She stood there thinking for a moment before stepping forward to lift the quilt. Xie Yuhan was wearing thick, plush cotton pajamas—pure white, like they had been soaked in milk.
She was still just as light, but she wasn’t as icy. She felt much better to the touch than the last time.
Xie Yuhan wrapped her arms around Meng Ke’s neck, her gaze fixed unblinkingly on her. Out in the hallway, the occasional passing nurse would pretend everything was normal as they brushed past. Meng Ke noticed one young nurse’s face had turned completely red.
At the elevator, Meng Ke shifted her forward slightly. “Press the button.”
Xie Yuhan let go of one hand and pressed the “open” button. The silver-white elevator doors slid open slowly. Two doctors were standing inside; seeing their posture, they hurriedly exited the elevator.
Meng Ke turned around, and Xie Yuhan reached out to press the button for the first floor. Then, she returned to her previous position, wrapping her arms around Meng Ke’s neck again. Meng Ke felt there was a hint of intentionality in her actions. She was intentionally leaning close.
As the elevator numbers slowly descended, Meng Ke felt this wasn’t the right posture for chatting, so she didn’t speak.
“Can you still carry me?” Xie Yuhan asked.
Meng Ke gave a light chuckle. “Do you want to test my strength? Should I carry you for a walk later?”
When she chuckled, her chest vibrated slightly. Xie Yuhan, held in her arms, felt it clearly. She hadn’t expected Meng Ke to say that.
Xie Yuhan quickly refused: “No.”
Although she was thicker-skinned than humans and didn’t care about people’s stares, this was still too much.
Meng Ke borrowed a wheelchair on the first floor and took her for a stroll in the small park.
“How did you save them? Can I ask?”
“No.”
When she saved the birds, she hadn’t intended to hide her special nature. As long as she didn’t speak of it, no one would ever associate her with something as absurd as being a mermaid. However, now that the Lu family knew, she feared she wouldn’t be able to hide it for much longer.
“I’ll trade you my secret for yours.”
“What secret do you have that could be worth the trade?”
“I guarantee the secret is just as important.”
Xie Yuhan looked at her, weighing what kind of secret she could possibly have. Suddenly, she remembered that Meng Ke carried the scent of nature on her, and that contact with her allowed Xie Yuhan to restore her power. Plus, Liang Xiao acted very strangely toward her. Seen this way, she indeed had a secret.
“Okay,” Xie Yuhan changed her mind.
“You go first.”
“Weren’t you asking how I saved your birds?”
“My blood has a healing effect on animals.”
As she spoke, Meng Ke watched her closely. The statement didn’t seem like a lie.
“Your turn.”
“Actually… I am not…”
The phone rang. Xie Yuhan looked at Meng Ke, who said with a hint of apology, “I’m sorry, let me take this call.”
