My Marriage Partner is a Crazy Mermaid - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Twins?
Seeing the incoming call from Luo Miao, Meng Ke’s intuition told her something was up. She didn’t hang up; instead, she gave Xie Yuhan a quick heads-up and stepped aside to answer.
“Keke, where are you right now? Is it convenient for you to come to Ta’er Airport?”
“What’s happened?”
“Earlier, I overheard my brother on the phone. He was telling someone to stay away from the Lu family. I kept an eye out and bribed my brother’s assistant—it turns out someone from the Lu family might be transferring at Ta’er Airport to head toward Xincheng.”
“I suspect it’s Lu Jiangya. “
“Why?”
“They’re looking for some kind of doctor. It seems Lu Jiangya is sick.”
“Do you want to come and see for yourself?”
“I’ll be there. What time does the flight land?”
“3:30 PM. You’ll have to hurry. I’ll go with you.”
“Contact me when you get to the airport.”
“Got it.”
After finishing the hurried call with a worried expression, Meng Ke turned back to find Xie Yuhan watching her, her face unreadable.
Meng Ke walked over and knelt in front of the wheelchair. Before she could speak, Xie Yuhan cast a cool glance toward the ground. “If you have business, go. I don’t need a human to keep me company.”
Meng Ke: “…”
“Is your… body really okay?”
Her blood had a healing effect on animals—how much had she used? How did she draw the blood? There were no obvious wounds on her. Meng Ke still had a long list of detailed questions she hadn’t asked.
“Do I look like I have a problem?” Xie Yuhan countered.
Fine. Back to the prickly state. It seemed she was fine.
“Then I’ll send you back,” Meng Ke added. “I need to use your car.”
“Talk to the driver.”
The hospital wheelchair wasn’t intelligent at all. Meng Ke had to manually push it while watching the road carefully. Once the wheelchair was returned, Meng Ke bent down to pick her up.
This time, there was no warm atmosphere or pink bubbles floating around. Meng Ke felt a bit guilty; after all, in this “confession game,” she had managed to bait out the other’s secret without saying a word of her own.
“I’ll keep your secret,” Meng Ke promised with what she thought was great solemnity. “When I get back, I’ll tell you mine.”
Humans are always obsessed with these childish promises.
Xie Yuhan didn’t actually care. Whether Meng Ke spoke or not didn’t affect her. As for her blood having healing properties—even if she said it, stupid humans wouldn’t believe it.
“Mm.”
Meng Ke settled her onto the hospital bed and tucked her in. “Get some good rest.”
This private hospital likely had some cooperation with Xie Jiaming; she occasionally spotted plainclothes bodyguards nearby. It was rare not to see the usual “big brothers” dressed entirely in black. However, their shirts couldn’t hide their muscle mass—it was quite obvious.
The driver downstairs was on standby 24 hours a day. Meng Ke went over and knocked on the window. The driver greeted her respectfully: “Madam.”
“Give me the car keys,” Meng Ke said, reaching out. The driver handed them over.
Xie Yuhan watched through the window as the car drove off, her eyes darkening for a moment. Her mermaid hearing was sharper than an ordinary person’s; she had overheard every word of Meng Ke’s muffled phone call. She didn’t know why Meng Ke would be involved with the Lu family.
Xie Yuhan pressed the call bell. Three people quickly entered and stood in a row, heads slightly bowed.
“Investigate the passengers on the 3:00 PM flights at Ta’er Airport today.”
“If there are members of the Lu family, check their information and their destination.”
“Yes!” they answered in unison.
“Arrange my discharge.”
“Yes.”
These people followed Xie Yuhan’s orders unconditionally and without a second of hesitation. Having received their mission, they quickly exited the room.
Xie Yuhan was left alone. She looked down at the fish scales emerging on her hand and blinked. An ice-blue light flashed, and the scales retreated. Her recovery was slower than expected. This body likely wouldn’t hold out for much longer.
Ta’er Airport
Meng Ke met up with Luo Miao, and the two found a sparsely populated rest area to sit.
Luo Miao spoke up impatiently: “The flight is delayed. It’s estimated to land in ten minutes.”
“Let me tell you what I’ve found out lately.”
“Three years ago, the Lu family wasn’t just kicked out by the Xie family; the whole family went to Country M. But Lu Jiangya didn’t go—she went to Country A before the Xie family made their move.”
“Along with her daughter, Lu Yun.”
“For some reason, Lu Jiangya isn’t on good terms with the Lu family. It’s only because she’s sick recently that Lu Yun reached out to the Lu family for help.”
“How did you find this out? Your brother?”
“No.” Luo Miao leaned in mysteriously. “I have a friend who is close with the daughter of the Cheng family—the one who mocked you at the welcome banquet.”
“Somehow she got hooked up with Meng Yingxue. The Chengs are cooperating with the Lus, so most of the news in Tan City leaked through the Chengs.”
“Cheng Mingzhu is brainless. My friend coaxed her a bit, and she practically blurted out where her ancestral graves were located. But they don’t know any of the internal secrets; the Lu family is also guarding against the Chengs.”
Luo Miao couldn’t help but agree: “Facing someone like her, you really should be on guard.”
Meng Ke gave a light laugh. “Thanks for the trouble lately.”
“Stop, stop, don’t start that again.”
“By the way, what about the Meng family?” Luo Miao asked. “Meng Yingxue still thinks you’re the one sabotaging them. She has no idea about the Lu family’s involvement.”
“There’s no way around it.” A cannon fodder female supporting character with a pure and silly setting was helpless.
Meng Yingxue didn’t even consider that the Xie and Meng families were now connected by marriage. If the Meng family fell into trouble, outsiders would think the Xie family couldn’t protect them—if they couldn’t even help their in-laws, what about other business partners? Otherwise, with Xie Yuhan’s personality, why would she have stepped in? Unfortunately, Meng Yingxue couldn’t see the underlying connections.
Luo Miao looked at her watch. “The plane has landed. Let’s go take a look.”
“Let’s go.”
There were only two exits for this flight from Country M—East and West, opposite each other and both within sight. Luo Miao and Meng Ke each watched one side. Ten minutes later, at exit B1, a woman was supporting another person, moving outward cautiously, step by step.
Luo Miao’s pupils shook. she blinked frantically, looking ahead and then back at the person beside her. Although she had known for a while that there might be twins, the visual impact was massive.
That woman looked 80% like Meng Ke. She looked much gentler than Meng Ke, with a high ponytail and a quiet, ladylike image. Meng Ke was different—Luo Miao couldn’t pinpoint exactly why, but Meng Ke looked much sharper than her.
Luo Miao tugged at Meng Ke’s clothes and gestured toward the one o’clock direction. Meng Ke looked over. After a moment of surprise, she regained her composure. It was a bit awkward suddenly seeing a face so similar to her own.
In almost a second, she confirmed that Ruan Yalan hadn’t lied, and she understood the details that had puzzled her lately. When the Meng family was being bullied by the Lu family, they hadn’t come to trouble her. She had thought the agreement was working, but in reality, the Meng family couldn’t afford to offend that side either.
Watching the two walk further away, Meng Ke was silent for a few seconds before saying, “Let’s go back.” Luo Miao hummed and followed.
As they reached the parking lot, Luo Miao saw the crowds and hesitated, only saying one thing: the Lu family planned to return to Tan City to develop.
Meng Ke had already expected this. Why else would the Lu family go through so much trouble to return? Just to give Xie Yuhan a warning?! But her own identity was sensitive. After spending so many days together with the wedding only days away, Xie Yuhan still didn’t trust her. If she knew her real identity… To be safe, Xie Yuhan wouldn’t take the risk.
Meng Ke’s mind was full of worries. She also worried about Xie Yuhan’s health. When she drove back to the hospital, she was told that Xie Yuhan had already been discharged.
“Has her body recovered?” Because of the uniqueness of Xie Yuhan’s body, she didn’t know if the hospital results were meaningful, but Meng Ke still wanted to ask.
“According to the test results, there are no major issues with Miss Xie,” the doctor said. “But her blood vitality is a bit low, likely from long-term exhaustion. Remind her to rest.”
“Got it.”
That evening, Meng Ke went to Minggang to grab dinner and check on the “three little ones.” They were lively and jumping around, almost ready to be released.
“Boss, don’t worry. Focus on your wedding first.”
Hearing the word “wedding” still didn’t feel real. Meng Ke was dazed for a moment before remembering Xie Yuhan had asked her to pick a wedding plan.
“Mm. Call me if anything happens.”
Shao Rou twiddled her fingers. “Boss, there actually is something.”
“Hmm?”
“Someone came by a couple of days ago asking for money. One hundred million.” Shao Rou held up one finger.
Meng Ke: “…” How did I forget about that? She felt like Liang Xiao was intentionally scamming her. “I know.”
Meng Ke sent a message to Xie Jiaming asking about Xie Yuhan’s situation and where they were, saying she was heading back to the city and would return the car.
Xie Jiaming: Xie Yuhan is at Zun Yue Mansion, Phase 1, Building 1, Unit 1, Room 802.
Meng Ke: “…” How did Xie Jiaming know she was asking about Xie Yuhan in a roundabout way? Giving the address so directly gave her an inexplicable sense of being “seen through.”
Meng Ke: Thank you.jpg
Not knowing what to say, she just sent an emoji. After giving Shao Rou and the others some brief instructions, she drove back to the city.
Zun Yue Mansion
Xie Yuhan was in the study, looking at the company’s project reports and financial data from the past few days. Compared to a month ago, things had dropped by half. Because she had been hospitalized, Xie Jiaming hadn’t told her the situation. Lu Jingchuan hadn’t made any huge moves; he had only snatched one project lately, and it wasn’t of high value.
Most of the decline was because an internal staff member had resigned, taking several hundred million in orders with them. Resigning at this time was definitely linked to the Lu family. Xie Yuhan searched his personal data but found no grudge between him and the Xie family; it was likely that Lu Jingchuan offered a bigger incentive.
A sound came from the door. Xie Yuhan pressed the intercom. “What is it?”
“Madam wants to see you.”
Due to the special circumstances and Xie Yuhan’s hospitalization and weakness, Xie Jiaming had told the guards to stay sharp. If anything happened to the Young Lady, they were all fired. Xie Jiaming was usually gentle, but hearing this warning, no one dared to slack off.
Meng Ke didn’t know the way and was acting a bit “shady” on the way up. Combined with the nightfall, the bodyguards followed the rule of “rather pin down the wrong person than let them go” and pinned her down.
“Let her in.” Xie Yuhan closed her laptop and pushed her wheelchair toward the living room.
Meng Ke rubbed her aching wrist and glared at the bodyguards. Entering the room, she switched to slippers at the entryway and saw Xie Yuhan’s wheelchair parked in the middle of the living room. It was that familiar high-end wheelchair.
“You’re out of the hospital. I came by to return the car and check on you,” Meng Ke explained.
“Nothing else?”
“No.”
“Then I know. You can go back.” Xie Yuhan raised an eyebrow, being a bit provocative.
“Hey… I do have something.” Meng Ke ground her teeth, feeling as if she was being held in a death-grip she couldn’t resist.
Xie Yuhan saw her changing expression and curled her lips. She gestured toward the sofa with her chin. “Sit and talk.”
Meng Ke sat on one side of the sofa, and Xie Yuhan maneuvered her wheelchair to sit opposite her. Xie Yuhan had just showered; a faint floral scent lingered in the air. Her fluffy hair fell naturally over her shoulders, and her pink ice-silk pajamas revealed her collarbone and snowy-white skin. She sat with her legs crossed; the pajamas slid down, showing her straight, overlapping legs as she leaned lazily against the wheelchair.
She didn’t know the wheelchair’s specific functions, but every time she saw Xie Yuhan in it, that laziness and naturalness were so prominent that the first thing she thought of wasn’t pity for a disability, but how does she make sitting in a wheelchair look so comfortable? She wanted to try it too.
“Speak.”
“Last time we said we’d trade secrets,” Meng Ke said. “Actually, I am not Meng Ke.”
Not Meng Ke?! After that accident, she had sent people to investigate all of Meng Ke’s information and found no issues. She trusted her people’s abilities. At what stage did the swap happen?! And where did the real Meng Ke go? Meng Ke had returned to Tan City with high visibility, and the Meng family had even held a welcome banquet for her. Even if she had been abroad, information wasn’t closed off; the real Meng Ke would have heard the news. How could there be no reaction at all?
“What is your purpose? Where is the real Meng Ke?”
“That is a separate secret.” Finding it rare to see confusion and curiosity on Xie Yuhan’s face, Meng Ke found it quite novel. “If you want to know, you’ll have to trade another secret of yours.”
Xie Yuhan: “…”
