My Husband is Suspicious - Episode 32
Eleanor asked, almost half-giving up.
“Then what do you truly hate?”
At her words, Dreid seemed to ponder for a moment before answering simply.
“Being separated from you.”
“…”
Eleanor fell silent for a moment at his words. Honestly, Eleanor hated that too. Dreid was the only one around her.
“…I hate that too.”
Eleanor said softly. Dreid nodded at Eleanor’s answer and said,
“Me too. I’d rather die than be separated from you.”
Dreid uttered the word “die” as if it were nothing. Eleanor looked at him, startled.
“Dreid, but dying…”
“That’s how much you mean everything to me.”
Dreid said without taking his eyes off Eleanor. Then, as if thinking for a moment, he slowly opened his mouth.
“Eleanor, since we’re on the topic, how about you wrap things up now?”
“If you mean ‘that matter,’ are you talking about my agency?”
Dreid nodded. Eleanor lowered her gaze, unable to answer easily. She saw the bread piled high on the table. It looked delicious at first glance. It smelled savory too. But strangely, she didn’t feel like eating.
That was how the agency work felt.
She felt like she should indeed wrap things up, as Dreid had said… but the words to agree to it wouldn’t come out easily.
‘I still feel a bit uneasy about something…’
It felt like something still lingered.
At that moment, Eleanor remembered what she had seen in his office before leaving this place. An empty tin of Kikid cream. It was the same kind she had given someone when she was young.
‘Why was that tin there?’
Eleanor looked up and examined Dreid’s face closely. His handsome face immediately caught her eye. His bright blue eyes made him look livelier, and his black hair added a certain atmosphere to his face. The image of the scruffy boy from long ago didn’t come to mind.
But strangely, Eleanor felt that he was somehow Dreid. It was just a hunch. It was a kind of instinct developed from her work at the agency.
Eleanor didn’t want to hesitate anymore. After all, he had revealed everything and told her to ask what she was curious about, so there was no reason to hesitate.
“Dreid.”
He gave a light smile. He seemed to be waiting to hear what she would say. But Eleanor’s lips wouldn’t move easily.
She had called his name, but she couldn’t figure out how to continue the conversation.
Eleanor fiddled with her fork, pointlessly. It was already slippery with sweat. Then, in an instant, the fork dropped. It was just as Eleanor was about to get up.
“Stay seated. I’ll get it.”
Dreid stood up lightly and went to where the tableware was kept. He took out a fork and offered it to Eleanor.
“Thank you.”
As Eleanor said with a smile, Dreid gazed at her intently. Eleanor, wondering if something was on her lips, touched them hesitantly. But her hands came away clean, her lips smooth.
Eleanor felt a question and asked,
“…Why?”
Just then, Dreid took Eleanor’s hand. As Eleanor looked up, he slowly met her gaze and knelt down.
“Eleanor, is there anything you’ve forgotten?”
“Forgotten?”
When Eleanor asked, Dreid nodded. He toyed with Eleanor’s hand. Eleanor looked at his handsome face for a moment.
Then, suddenly, she remembered a familiar habit from the past. When she wanted to thank him or when they met after a long time, she always went up to him and kissed his cheek. Eleanor let out a small gasp inwardly and quickly kissed his cheek.
Then, he raised the corners of his lips and lightly kissed Eleanor’s cheek. The light touch of his lips was soft. He gently stroked Eleanor’s cheek and slowly stood up. Then he returned to the seat opposite her.
Eleanor observed Dreid calmly.
‘Was the boy I saw back then like this?’
That didn’t seem right. When Eleanor acknowledged him, he had approached her. He had never approached her first. And when she first saw him, that boy had eyes full of defiance.
‘But somehow, those eyes seem to appear sometimes…’
After thinking for a long time, Eleanor finally opened her mouth. Thinking alone wouldn’t get her anywhere anyway.
“Dreid, have we perhaps met when we were young?”
Dreid’s expression stiffened for a moment. It was fleeting, but Eleanor saw it clearly. He knew something. As Eleanor continued to stare, Dreid said,
“Why do you ask?”
“It’s just that I sometimes think of the person I gave Kikid cream to.”
“Did you give that cream to many people?”
“No. Only to one person.”
At her words, Dreid smiled enigmatically. Eleanor had a strong premonition that the boy was deeply connected to Dreid.
“Do you remember?”
Dreid suddenly asked.
Eleanor’s memory was vivid. She hadn’t been sure if that boy was Dreid until now. She was merely guessing in her heart based on his reaction. Because Dreid hadn’t said anything yet.
Eleanor opened her mouth calmly.
“I remember that time. Helping that person in a dark alley. And later, running into him by chance in front of the mansion.”
At her words, Dreid grinned. He seemed genuinely happy. He met Eleanor’s eyes intently and said,
“Eleanor, it was me. The boy from back then.”
Eleanor was momentarily speechless, blinking her eyes. So, that scruffy person was the current Dreid?
“Then why didn’t you say so sooner?”
“It seemed like you didn’t remember that time, and you didn’t particularly seem curious about it either.”
It was true. If she had remembered that incident from the start, she would have asked Dreid immediately. But thinking about it now, it was surprising that she remembered it at all.
“You’re very different from back then now. No, back then…”
Suddenly, Eleanor stopped speaking, sensing it might be a bad memory for Dreid. Dreid had been badly injured back then. The current Dreid was completely different from that time. He was incomparable to his current appearance.
Besides, he had a lot of wealth. As soon as that thought occurred to her, Eleanor opened her mouth without further hesitation.
“Dreid, and you have much more money than I thought.”
“You found all that out too?”
Dreid said with a light laugh.
“You didn’t tell me, so somehow… I ended up figuring it out.”
Eleanor mumbled, feeling a bit embarrassed. Dreid said leisurely, as if understanding her reaction,
“After experiencing that, I didn’t want to live like that anymore, so I made an effort. I wanted to live like other people too.”
“Then what about working at the bank as a junior clerk? The last time I saw you, you seemed to be entering a place with quite strict security.”
Eleanor no longer hesitated. Dreid’s leisurely demeanor gave her confidence. She felt like he would answer anything she asked now.
At that moment, Dreid let out a light laugh. He had always just smiled, but this was the first time she had seen him laugh like that. Eleanor stared at him blankly for a moment.
She felt like she was seeing many different sides of him today.
“Eleanor, I’m sorry about that.”
Dreid said, still with a smile.
“Did you deliberately deceive me?”
“Actually, I was so happy when I saw you at the glass art shop. But you didn’t seem to remember me, so I approached you as if we were meeting for the first time. I thought you would be uncomfortable if I suddenly told you I was in such a position, so I just said I was a junior bank clerk.”
“…”
A moment of silence passed. Eleanor looked at Dreid with a stern expression.
“Eleanor, are you angry?”
Dreid asked with a worried voice. It wasn’t that she was angry, but she couldn’t understand why he had gone to such lengths.
“Why did you go that far? If you had just revealed everything…”
“If I hadn’t, you would still be wary of me.”
Dreid looked at Eleanor with a gentle gaze.
“Me?”
“Yes, you were too guarded.”
For some reason, those words struck a chord. Eleanor wondered if she was that much of a guarded person.
At that moment, Dreid said,
“I still remember it. The moment your face softened when I said I was a junior bank clerk.”
Dreid had a better memory than she thought. Moreover, he understood Eleanor better than anyone. It was true that Eleanor had gone to that restaurant because Dreid was excessively handsome, but she had been wary of him more than anyone.
However, at their first meal, he naturally guided the conversation and considerate of Eleanor without making her uncomfortable. If Dreid had told her then that he held a high position at the bank, Eleanor would not have been at ease.
Furthermore, at the time, she was growing to dislike nobles more and more as she took on treasure commissions. They bought the treasures of fallen families cheaply, driving the poor further into destitution. Eleanor had keenly felt the moment her family fell, so she couldn’t view such actions favorably.
Moreover, if Dreid had said he was a high-ranking bank official, she would have felt even more uncomfortable, thinking he had obtained that position through unfair means. At that time, Eleanor saw all wealthy nobles in the same light.
Thinking about it, her wariness seemed to have intensified right after her family fell. Back then, people flocked to buy the treasures of fallen families cheaply. They all begged her to sell them.
But Eleanor didn’t have such treasures. The family’s only treasure, an emerald necklace, had already been stolen.
“Eleanor.”
At Dreid’s voice, Eleanor looked up. He was smiling faintly, as if he had been watching her thoughts.
“Are you okay now?”
“Okay with what?”
“Me saying that and meeting you for the first time.”
Dreid hadn’t hidden that he had committed a crime, so it didn’t bother her. What bothered her was that he hadn’t told her until now.
As Eleanor hesitated for a moment, Dreid said,
“Eleanor, honestly, then and now, I’ve always wanted to get closer to you. More than anything, back then, you didn’t remember me, so I think I was a bit impatient. I liked you so much that I wanted to continue our relationship somehow.”
