My Husband is Suspicious - Episode 3
Perhaps using this opportunity to learn more about him wouldn’t be so bad, I thought. Though I couldn’t know what the repercussions would be.
Just then, a grumbling sound came from my stomach. It wasn’t very loud. Eleanor picked up her fork, pretending to be nonchalant. The cold fork in her hand was enough to keep her grounded.
“Eleanor.”
Eleanor looked up at Dreid. At that moment, their eyes met. Dreid hadn’t touched his food, as if he had been watching Eleanor the whole time. Eleanor looked at him, puzzled.
Dreid tilted his head slightly. The corners of his lips quirked up in a subtle smile. It was an alluring smile. When Eleanor just stared, Dreid spoke.
“What are you thinking about so deeply?”
He seemed uninterested in the food right in front of him, only looking at Eleanor. Seeing his deep blue eyes, Eleanor wondered what he was thinking instead.
Maybe it would be okay to bring up the current situation without specifying who was involved, I thought. After all, shouldn’t I give him a chance to speak as well?
Eleanor paused for a moment before saying, “Something frustrating happened today.”
“Frustrating?”
“It feels like someone is subtly interfering with my work.”
It was almost a direct accusation at Dreid. But Dreid just looked at Eleanor as if he didn’t understand at all. He didn’t seem surprised. Only his expression hardened slightly compared to before.
“……”
“…Who could be interfering with my work?”
Eleanor asked in a questioning voice. She almost wished Dreid would tell the truth at this point. Maybe she wanted to give him a chance.
A chance to confess everything.
But Dreid looked at Eleanor for a moment before shaking his head.
“Those kinds of things usually involve weirdos. Tell me if your work is too hard. You never really liked investigating people’s backgrounds anyway.”
“……”
When Eleanor didn’t answer, Dreid spoke again.
“Eleanor, isn’t there any glass art you want? I heard they got some new animal shapes this time.”
Whenever Eleanor was having a hard time, Dreid would buy her a piece of glass art that she liked. They were usually expensive, so she couldn’t usually afford them. Eleanor could only buy one when she received a request.
‘Come to think of it, it’s strange that he buys me such expensive things.’
Eleanor hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but now it was starting to feel more unsettling.
“Eleanor?”
Dreid called Eleanor once more. Eleanor looked up at Dreid. His handsome face, with his black hair slightly falling over his forehead, looked worried about her.
He seemed genuine. But Eleanor couldn’t fully trust him. When she had asked him earlier who could be interfering with her work, Dreid had dismissed it casually, as if it were someone else’s problem.
So, Eleanor decided to subtly ask him about her suspicions this time.
“Is the bank not busy these days?”
“The bank?”
“Yes, where you work. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you at work.”
“The bank is the same as always. Always busy and crowded.”
Dreid rested his chin on his hand and looked at Eleanor as he spoke. When his eyes met Eleanor’s, he winked and gestured to the food in front of her.
“Eleanor, it’s getting cold.”
Dreid didn’t seem interested in the food in front of him at all.
Eleanor swallowed hard and picked up her fork. Then she suddenly remembered that Dreid hadn’t even picked up his fork. Eleanor looked up at him and said,
“Aren’t you going to eat?”
“I’m full just looking at you.”
Eleanor nodded, looking at his forearm, which now had its sleeve down. Come to think of it, Dreid never really ate when he made food for Eleanor. Even when she asked if he wasn’t hungry, Dreid always said that.
‘Did he put something in the food?’
Eleanor stirred the pasta with her fork with an uneasy feeling. It smelled fine. It didn’t look particularly different either. Moreover, Eleanor had never gotten sick from the food he had made her.
But for some reason, Eleanor was reluctant to eat this food today.
“Eleanor.”
When Eleanor looked up, Dreid smiled softly and said,
“It’s what you always liked.”
Dreid knew well what she liked. Eleanor gave a faint smile. How could she naturally avoid eating the food in this situation?
Reluctantly, Eleanor opened her mouth.
“…I’m not very hungry.”
Just then, a loud grumbling sound echoed. Eleanor frowned and clutched her stomach. She had been hungry since earlier, so it was a close call, but she didn’t expect her body to be so oblivious… Eleanor felt betrayed by her own body.
In this situation, Dreid smiled and said in a gentle voice,
“Eleanor, eat up. It seems like your words and your body are contradicting each other.”
He said it somewhat playfully, but Eleanor felt uneasy, as if he had caught on to something. It wasn’t anything serious, but she still felt bad for trying to get out of the situation by lying to Dreid.
She wanted to find out about him as carefully as possible. But the situation wasn’t good for doing that without eating the food now. More than anything, she was too hungry.
Eleanor looked at the food in front of her. It wasn’t completely cold yet, and the delicious smell wafted into her nose.
‘I guess it’s better to trust him this once.’
After all, Eleanor had married Dreid because she loved him. So it wouldn’t be bad to trust him once. She had no choice in the current situation anyway.
She could feel Dreid’s persistent gaze.
Reluctantly, Eleanor picked up her fork. She gently twirled the pasta noodles that she had been stirring and put them in her mouth. A familiar taste spread in her mouth along with the delicious aroma. It was the pasta that Dreid always made.
“It’s delicious.”
Eleanor said with a smile. Only then did Dreid take his eyes off Eleanor and pick up his fork. Eleanor slowly chewed her food while observing him.
Dreid also neatly twirled the noodles and elegantly put them in his mouth.
He slowly chewed his food and made eye contact with Eleanor. When their eyes met, Dreid smiled with his eyes.
Eleanor smiled back. At the same time, she felt relieved.
At least he wasn’t a bad person who would mess with the food. Besides, Eleanor had never gotten sick from the food Dreid had made her.
It was when they had finished eating to some extent.
“Eleanor, do you have many clients these days?”
Dreid asked casually. But Eleanor paused with her hand holding the fork. Clients had almost completely stopped coming these days.
She had been neglecting her requests because she was busy finding out about Dreid, but it was true that clients had been coming much less than before.
Eleanor didn’t expect Dreid to ask her this so abruptly. More than anything, what was his intention in asking that? Was Dreid also trying to test her?
Eleanor was momentarily flustered, but she smiled as if nothing was wrong.
“Clients haven’t been coming much these days. I told you earlier, it feels like someone is subtly interfering with my work.”
Dreid silently looked at Eleanor before slowly opening his mouth.
“Eleanor, now that we’re on the subject.”
He stopped talking and looked down for a moment. His brow furrowed as if he was thinking about something. He was hesitating.
‘What could he be thinking that’s making him hesitate so much? Is he finally going to reveal the truth?’
That seemed like the most likely thing in the current situation. The thought of actually finding out the truth made her feel slightly nervous and empty. But unexpected words came out of his mouth.
“I mentioned it briefly earlier, but how about quitting that job now?”
“Quit?”
“I’ve been worried about you doing that all this time. I’ve been worried about you investigating people’s backgrounds and digging up other people’s dirty affairs.”
“……”
“And more than anything, you said someone is interfering with your work.”
Eleanor nodded as she looked at Dreid. Dreid looked at Eleanor’s expression and seemed to think for a moment before continuing.
“If quitting your job is too much, then how about taking a break for a while?”
Dreid looked Eleanor straight in the eye as he spoke. When Eleanor stared at him as if frozen for a moment, Dreid smiled, raising the corners of his lips. The atmosphere felt lighter in an instant.
“I told you,”
“…What?”
“That I can support someone like you.”
His tone was very gentle. Eleanor looked away from Dreid and stared at the plate in front of her. Come to think of it, that was right. Dreid had said that before when Eleanor was having a hard time investigating people’s backgrounds while doing this job.
She had thought it was just a joke back then. So, she had laughed it off. But even that was now. Eleanor was now really curious about Dreid. So, she asked him directly.
“Are you really capable of supporting me?”
Dreid nodded lightly.
“Eleanor, I don’t make empty promises. Especially when it comes to you.”
His gaze was fixed on Eleanor. It was a gaze without a hint of falsehood. It was slightly obsessive yet subtly clear. Eleanor was confused. But she didn’t show it.
“…I like investigating people’s backgrounds too.”
So, words that were not in her heart came out. To be honest, Eleanor only wanted to take on treasure requests. But in order to pay her assistant’s salary and maintain the office, she had no choice but to investigate people’s backgrounds.
“You said you didn’t like it back then.”
“Now that I think about it, I think that kind of work is kind of fun.”
Eleanor lied.
She observed Dreid’s face, but she couldn’t easily read what he was thinking. This situation would be embarrassing for him, but he was subtly smiling.
