My Husband is Suspicious - Episode 2
What if…?
What if it was all a mistake?
Like, what if Eleanor’s assistant had investigated incorrectly and drawn the wrong conclusions? Then suspecting her husband like that would have been an overreaction.
But it couldn’t be wrong. Eleanor had investigated several times, and the results were the same. At the very end of the list of people who had subtly interfered with her work was Dreid.
Eleanor felt uneasy. If he had subtly interfered with her work, she decided it would be better to investigate him carefully rather than confronting him outright.
Above all, Eleanor didn’t know much about Dreid.
It was ridiculous. She had lived with him for a year and a half, and she didn’t know him well.
‘Is it my fault, too?’
Maybe it was a problem that she had married Dreid without knowing much about him. But at the time, Eleanor had no choice. He had been so endlessly kind and good to her that she never imagined he would turn out like this.
‘So, was it all an act?’
If it was all an act. If all that kindness and tenderness was an act?
Eleanor felt her mind go cold. But she soon dismissed the thought.
No matter how she thought about it, it was impossible to act like that for a year and a half. If it was all an act, she would be scared of Dreid.
‘But he was always good to me.’
Dreid was the kind of husband who remembered birthdays and even minor celebrations.
Eleanor stopped thinking at that point. If she thought any further, her head would explode with endless suspicion.
‘I guess it’s better to investigate carefully.’
If she asked him directly, Dreid would definitely deny it in his current state. He had been hiding all this time, so would he really tell her now?
But she couldn’t just sit idly by. She needed to quell the endless suspicion to avoid going crazy in this state.
Eleanor sighed deeply. She was also afraid.
‘What if he’s not the husband I knew? What if everything he said and did to me was a lie?’
But she wouldn’t know until she knew the truth. At least Eleanor loved her husband. So, she wanted to believe him, even a little, before all the suspicion grew uncontrollably.
So, Eleanor decided that she should find out more about her husband, even now.
Just then, the streetcar stopped. Eleanor got off lightly. After a few steps, she came to an ivory-colored stone mansion. It was their marital home.
‘Come to think of it, this mansion doesn’t look cheap.’
At the time, her husband had said that he had spent all the money he had saved on this place. Eleanor didn’t doubt his words because she thought her husband had lived diligently as a solid banker.
But now that she looked at it, the mansion looked quite expensive.
Jerak Street was a street where the middle class lived. It wasn’t a place where huge tycoons lived, but still, people with pretty good circumstances gathered there.
From what she heard, a banker’s salary wasn’t much. Moreover, Dreid hadn’t mentioned being promoted. No matter how diligently Dreid, an ordinary banker, had saved money, it seemed insufficient to buy a mansion in this neighborhood.
Besides, this street was close to the center of the capital and was popular with people.
Suddenly, she remembered what she had said when she met a client.
‘Oh, Eleanor, do you live on Jerak Street?’
‘Yes, do you live near there?’
‘No. Jerak Street is quite expensive these days! You’re more capable than I thought.’
‘Capable? No, I’m not!’
Eleanor waved her hand awkwardly and continued.
‘My husband bought it before we got married.’
‘He bought it before you got married?’
The client said with a somewhat surprised face. Eleanor asked, expressing her doubts at the sight.
‘…Why?’
‘Well, I’ve always been trying to get a property there, but it’s never available.’
The client muttered. When Eleanor looked at her curiously, the client smiled and continued.
‘It’s just that I really wanted to live there too. So, even though I’ve been trying to get a property there for ten years, it’s like there’s gum stuck to it, and properties don’t come out easily. Besides, the price of that place has gone up a lot recently, right? So, people don’t want to sell it anymore these days. Because it looks like the price will go up even more.’
At the time, Eleanor just smiled, thinking nothing of it. Eleanor wasn’t usually very interested in real estate. She was busy with pending requests and didn’t have time to worry about such things.
But now that she thought about it…
How did Dreid buy a place where properties didn’t come out easily? Even if he bought it before they got married, he would have been in his late teens ten years ago. He wouldn’t have been a banker at that time, so would an ordinary teenager have had the financial resources to buy such a mansion?
Come to think of it, Dreid might not have been an ordinary banker. So, he must have done something before becoming a banker. Otherwise, he definitely wouldn’t have been able to buy this mansion.
For some reason, Eleanor felt uneasy. Her husband’s past. She had a feeling that she was about to touch Pandora’s box.
Then, a rumbling sound echoed from her stomach. Eleanor sighed and grabbed her hungry belly. She couldn’t continue thinking because she was hungry.
‘…I just hope I don’t find out about another woman while investigating.’
With that, Eleanor roughly organized her heavy thoughts and entered the mansion.
As soon as she entered the mansion, a delicious smell tickled her nose.
“You’re home?”
Dreid turned around from the kitchen near the door. He was wearing a white shirt, and it seemed like he hadn’t been home from work for long. Eleanor said, looking at the familiar him.
“You’re home early.”
“Work finished early.”
Dreid said in a soft voice. Eleanor was very hungry, so she lightly tidied up her clothes and went into the kitchen. Dinner was already set on the table in the kitchen.
“You must be very hungry, right? Wait a little bit. I’m almost done.”
Dreid turned around slightly and smiled. Eleanor stood next to him and observed him. He had slightly rolled up his sleeves to cook, and his firm arms were visible. He was lightly holding a pan between his firmly raised veins.
His gaze was fixed on the pan in front of him. Then, he turned around slightly, knowing that Eleanor was next to him, and smiled.
It was a very handsome smile, one that would make anyone smile. Eleanor smiled naturally. Then he said.
“Eleanor, you look happy today.”
“Me?”
“Yes, I’ve never seen a smile like that today.”
Then Dreid kissed Eleanor on the cheek and laughed. Eleanor looked at him for a moment and smiled slightly again.
Even so, Eleanor felt somehow uneasy. Dreid was still the same. That made Eleanor even more uneasy.
“Eleanor.”
Dreid said, still smiling. Eleanor, who had been lost in thought, turned her gaze. He didn’t take his eyes off Eleanor. Eleanor raised the corners of her lips slightly and said.
“Why?”
When Eleanor asked, Dreid looked at Eleanor for a moment, smiled, and shook his head.
“It’s nothing.”
It was somehow anticlimactic. What was he about to say?
Then she remembered what she used to do with him. If Dreid kissed her on the cheek, Eleanor would kiss Dreid on the cheek or lips.
But Eleanor didn’t feel like it now. She was suspicious of him, so she was reluctant to act like she used to.
‘What if all this is an act?’
It hadn’t been confirmed yet, but she couldn’t help but be suspicious.
Eleanor looked at Dreid for a moment, then placed the fork and spoon on the table and sat down. Then she looked around. Unlike before, the mansion was quiet.
“Come to think of it, Mrs. Beckade is not here.”
It was Mrs. Beckade who usually took care of cleaning and cooking in this mansion. Mrs. Beckade’s voice was loud and her temper was quick, so she made the quiet mansion lively, but today she wasn’t there, so it felt even quieter.
“Ah, I told her to leave work early. I came home early today too, and I’m going to make you delicious food myself.”
Then he skillfully placed the pasta from the pan onto Eleanor’s plate. Hot steam flowed out, and a fragrant and delicious smell pricked her nose. When Eleanor looked at him, Dreid smiled and said.
“I wanted to be alone with you.”
Dreid made eye contact with Eleanor and raised the corners of his lips. Eleanor smiled faintly in response.
Dreid always prepared food like this whenever he left work early. But it was unprecedented for him to have Mrs. Beckade leave work at this time as well.
Eleanor fiddled with the cold fork.
‘What is Dreid thinking right now?’
Eleanor slowly raised her gaze and looked around.
Before she knew it, a delicious meal was set on the table. Salad with apple sauce, golden-brown bread, and freshly made pasta.
Then Dreid lightly placed a dried apple decoration on Eleanor’s pasta. His long fingers moved meticulously. When Eleanor looked up, Dreid smiled and returned to his seat.
Eleanor stared blankly at her plate. The small apple decoration was particularly noticeable. Apples were Eleanor’s favorite fruit. Come to think of it, Dreid knew very well what Eleanor liked and disliked.
It was the same just looking at this table. All of them were Eleanor’s favorite foods. Eleanor wondered if Dreid liked this food too.
Judging from the fact that he always prepared apple decorations and apple sauce salad like this, it seemed like he liked it.
But Eleanor didn’t know if Dreid really liked apples.
‘I really don’t know anything.’
Eleanor smiled self-deprecatingly. Had she really been indifferent to Dreid all this time? But when she thought about it, Dreid didn’t have any particularly strong likes or dislikes. He always said.
‘If you like it, I like it too.’
While saying that, Dreid constantly asked Eleanor what she liked and disliked. Come to think of it, he knew so much about her, but Eleanor felt like she didn’t know anything about Dreid.
