My Husband is Suspicious - Episode 27
“Miss Eleanor, if you’re not comfortable, I can find another room…”
“No. I’ll stay here.”
“Yes?”
Mackiv looked at Eleanor, seemingly flustered. Eleanor, on the other hand, spoke calmly.
“We already paid for it anyway. And the room is spacious. Even if I tried to find another place, most of them are booked now, so I wouldn’t be able to get one. Besides, the sun is setting.”
Eleanor looked out the wide window, then turned to Mackiv. Eleanor trusted Mackiv. More than anything, he had been quite helpful today. She felt uncomfortable turning someone like that out.
“Are you sure it’s alright?”
Mackiv asked cautiously.
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“I…”
Mackiv started to speak but stopped. Eleanor looked at him, puzzled.
“But I haven’t separated from my husband yet.”
As Eleanor spoke, Mackiv nodded.
“I know. So you trust me, right?”
This time, Eleanor nodded. Mackiv remained still for a moment, then broke into a wide smile. Seeing his smile, Eleanor felt inexplicably reassured.
“Thank you for trusting me, Miss Eleanor.”
“You helped me a lot, after all.”
Then, Eleanor turned and walked back towards the wall. Mackiv followed her. He looked at the device near the wall and said,
“Are you trying to bug it?”
“I’ll do everything I can.”
Eleanor briefly thought she was being excessive, then stopped herself. Dreid had made her this way, made her this desperate.
“Can I help?”
“No, it’s fine.”
Eleanor said so, but Mackiv approached. He took hold of the device Eleanor was trying to fix. As Eleanor watched, momentarily surprised, he smiled and gripped it tightly.
“This is how you do it, right?”
Mackiv smiled broadly. Eleanor nodded with a reluctant expression. Then, Eleanor suddenly lost strength. Because of that, she let go of another device she had just managed to fix. Just then, a thud echoed again.
“Are you alright?”
Mackiv asked with concern, but Eleanor nodded as if nothing was wrong. Then she examined the adhesive surface of the device that had fallen off so many times before. There was no problem, yet it kept falling off as if there were. Eleanor let out a faint sigh and tossed it into her bag.
It was fine; one device could be replaced with another.
“Mackiv, you can let go of that device now. It should be attached by now.”
It was as Mackiv released his hand.
Ding-dong—
A cheerful bell rang. Eleanor and Mackiv exchanged glances. Mackiv’s eyes widened in surprise too. No one was expected.
“I’ll go see who it is.”
Mackiv spoke first and walked towards the door. Eleanor, just in case, tidied up the surrounding devices.
“What are you doing that’s so noisy?”
As Mackiv opened the door, a familiar voice was heard. Eleanor froze mid-tidying. It was Dreid’s voice. Her heart suddenly pounded.
“We weren’t doing anything.”
Mackiv said casually. Eleanor ignored her trembling hands, finished tidying her luggage, and quickly moved to a spot out of his sight.
“It’s not ‘nothing’ when it’s been noisy since a while ago.”
Dreid seemed to have reached his limit, and his voice carried a subtle anger.
“Um, first of all, I apologize if it was noisy because of me. It won’t happen again. I thought it was a good hotel, but the soundproofing is terrible.”
Mackiv intended to send Dreid away at that point. But Dreid just stared straight at Mackiv. Then, as if interested in what was behind Mackiv, he glanced around and said,
“May I come in?”
“…What are you talking about?”
“Who’s to say you haven’t been up to something strange?”
“No, even so, just barging in like this…”
“Move aside.”
“Hey, this is my room. And I don’t know you, so how can I let you in so carelessly?”
“I know you.”
“You know me?”
“I saw you earlier.”
At that moment, Eleanor covered her mouth and gasped. Dreid saw her?
Eleanor wracked her memory, trying to recall earlier. But no matter how hard she thought, she couldn’t remember Dreid looking at her. She had just left in such a rush…
‘Did he see me then?’
Then, Mackiv’s flustered voice rang out.
“You saw me?”
“Your flustered reaction suggests there’s something.”
“Wait a moment.”
Mackiv tried to stop him, but Dreid barged in without another word. Eleanor had removed the listening devices beforehand, so it looked neat from the outside.
Dreid slowly looked around. His gaze was meticulous but cold. Soon, his piercing blue eyes flashed as if glaring at Mackiv.
“Are you alone here?”
“Would you please leave? What business is it of yours whether I’m alone or not?”
“I’m sure I saw you.”
Dreid said with a cold smile.
“I haven’t seen you before.”
Mackiv replied with a smile. Dreid looked at him, then turned. He began searching the wardrobes around the room.
“If you keep this up, I’ll contact the hotel management.”
Mackiv said with a sigh. Dreid chuckled and said,
“Go ahead and contact them.”
Dreid was excessively confident. Mackiv, thinking about the reason for his confidence, quickly stepped in front of the wardrobe where Dreid was standing.
“Even if you have a large stake here, you’re not the owner.”
Mackiv said with a stern face.
“I may not be the owner, but can’t I manage it?”
Dreid said, looking at the wardrobe. His sharp intuition pointed to this wardrobe.
“Open the door.”
“You’re really unreasonable.”
Mackiv said, incredulous. He shook his head.
“Shall we make a bet?”
“A bet?”
“Yes, bet your life.”
Dreid lightly brought a silver gun to Mackiv’s temple. It was instantaneous. As Mackiv looked up in surprise, Dreid merely smiled.
“How about it?”
When Dreid asked, Mackiv sighed as if he had given up.
“Then, if I win, what will you give me?”
“I’ll leave quietly.”
Just those words alone made Mackiv feel relieved. He said lightly,
“Alright.”
Mackiv trusted his gut. It was a gut feeling that had never been wrong.
“I can open it, right?”
Mackiv smiled leisurely. Dreid gestured towards the wardrobe. Mackiv slowly reached for the wardrobe door handle and opened it.
The empty wardrobe began to appear. And when it was fully opened, there was nothing inside.
“It’s empty.”
Mackiv said, laughing. Dreid scanned the surroundings with cold eyes and put away his gun.
“Now, please leave.”
Dreid looked at Mackiv intently. He even scanned Mackiv’s clothes and said,
“For someone selling magic stones, you seem to be carrying an excessive amount.”
“The more I sell, the better.”
Dreid stared at Mackiv for a long time. His gaze lingered on the magic stones.
“Oh, do you happen to need any magic stones?”
Mackiv asked casually, and Dreid replied slowly,
“Are you acting oblivious on purpose?”
“Would you please leave now? I won the bet, didn’t I? You have to keep your word.”
“I must keep my word.”
Dreid slowly repeated Mackiv’s words and chuckled. It was as Dreid was nearing the door that he turned back.
“Why?”
Mackiv asked.
“Take better care of the people around you.”
Dreid said something incomprehensible. As Mackiv looked at him quizzically, he smiled again. Then he turned and left the room.
As soon as Dreid left, Mackiv closed the door completely. Mackiv immediately turned and scanned the surroundings.
“Miss Eleanor?”
A moment later, Eleanor emerged from beside the wardrobe Dreid had indicated.
“You were there?”
Eleanor nodded, looking slightly dazed. She had almost been caught by Dreid.
“Are you alright?”
Mackiv asked with a worried voice. Eleanor slowly lifted her head.
“I thought I heard the sound of a gun being loaded earlier.”
“Ah, it was nothing.”
Mackiv smiled as if it were trivial.
“Nothing? Didn’t you put your life on the line just now?”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“I’m fine. I don’t die easily, anyway. Besides, my gut feeling is incredible.”
“Still, this…”
“Miss Eleanor, you were worried about me, weren’t you?”
Mackiv said, genuinely pleased. Eleanor found the seemingly unfazed Mackiv strangely concerning.
“I was worried, but are you really okay?”
When Eleanor asked again, Mackiv smiled broadly.
“Yes, I’m really fine.”
Mackiv said gently. Only then did Eleanor nod. She immediately let out a sigh. Dreid had come all the way here. Moreover, he had tried to find her.
‘Is he jealous?’
The thought made Eleanor want to laugh.
‘What’s the point now? I don’t know any truth and only have misunderstandings.’
But Dreid had been quite menacing earlier. It was a situation where he could have easily killed Mackiv. Even Eleanor, hiding in the wardrobe, could sense the atmosphere, so what must Mackiv have felt.
Mackiv was taking off his outer shirt to organize the magic stones. He treated them as if they were precious jewels. Come to think of it, Mackiv seemed like no ordinary person either. He had accepted such a strange bet in that situation. Risking his life.
Eleanor recalled what Dreid had said earlier. For someone selling magic stones, he carried an excessive amount. As he said, Mackiv did carry a lot of magic stones. Enough to jingle.
‘Is that how all magic stone vendors are?’
Eleanor didn’t actually know in detail. In a way, it could be as Mackiv said, carrying them to sell more.
‘Why did Dreid say that?’
His words bothered her anew. Just then, Mackiv spoke.
“Miss Eleanor, I’ll use this side.”
The side Mackiv indicated was opposite Dreid’s room. Eleanor nodded. He then stood up and put on the clothes he had used to organize the magic stones. Every time he moved, the jingling sound echoed particularly loudly.
Eleanor looked at Mackiv for a moment, then turned away. She took out her luggage again and started organizing the listening devices. This time, instead of just fixing them to the wall, she intended to hold them to her ear. Since he had entered the room as he pleased, she wanted to listen to what he was doing in the room, even if it was just like this.
