My Husband is Suspicious - Episode 11
Mackie asked innocently, and Pitty carefully examined Eleanor’s face. If she said, “Yes, I feel really bad,” she thought she would be seen as narrow-minded, so Eleanor barely shook her head.
“…No.”
“That’s a relief.”
Mackie put his hand on his chest and smiled as if he was truly relieved. It seemed like an exaggerated gesture, but strangely, it suited him well. Every time he moved his arm slightly, the magic orb jingled and swayed.
Eleanor watched indifferently and then turned her head to Pitty.
“How did the courthouse matter go?”
“Ah, that went well.”
“Good job.”
Eleanor answered simply and turned her head. She had nothing more to say to Mackie, and she thought Pitty would see him off. Since they knew each other, she thought they would talk for a bit and then he would leave.
So, Eleanor was clearly trying not to care. But Pitty and Mackie were laughing about something funny, and they were seriously talking with their heads together. Eleanor felt strangely bothered.
It was even more so because Mackie was a man. When she thought about it, almost all the people who came to the office were women. Strangely, men didn’t come often.
Of course, it wasn’t that she thought of Mackie as someone to share her feelings with, but the cheerful atmosphere in the usually quiet office was annoying.
So, after some time, Eleanor wanted to say something because she wanted to be quiet. But, perfectly timed, Pitty looked up and met Eleanor’s eyes.
“Eleanor, can Mackie come tomorrow too? I think Mackie will be a great help in gathering information about the Finn Bank.”
Finn Bank? Then she couldn’t possibly say no. To properly understand Dreid, she needed information about the Finn Bank.
That way, she could find out what he was really doing there. If she was lucky, she could also find out various information about Dreid, which would be quite good.
Eleanor felt uneasy, but she couldn’t refuse.
“…Do that.”
Even after saying that, she felt like something was wrong, but Eleanor boldly erased that thought.
Mackie wouldn’t be staying long anyway. If he made a lot of noise, she could tell him to be quiet, and if he bothered her, she could tell him to leave right away.
Above all, this was Eleanor’s office.
“Thank you!”
Mackie smiled brightly, genuinely happy that Eleanor had agreed. Eleanor nodded lightly and turned her head. She had a feeling that she would have more to worry about.
It was already time to go home. Eleanor felt like the day was long today. It was understandable. An unexpected side of Dreid, Mackie’s appearance, and the newly realized Dreid’s subtle interference. Experiencing just one of those things would be tiring enough.
“Eleanor, aren’t you leaving?”
Pitty had finished his work and was waiting in front of the door with Mackie. Mackie was standing faithfully next to her, as if he was going to leave together.
Eleanor looked at him once and walked towards the door.
As soon as she came out onto the street, there were quite a few people.
“Then, Eleanor, I’ll be going now.”
Pitty said, greeting her after locking the office door.
“See you tomorrow.”
Then Eleanor turned and walked down the street. At that moment, she heard someone following her. The jingling sound was a bonus.
Eleanor felt like it would be annoying, so she walked faster. But Mackie was taller than Eleanor, so his stride was longer, and he quickly caught up.
Soon, Mackie, who had caught up, smiled and asked Eleanor.
“Where are you going?”
“Why?”
Eleanor just looked ahead and said.
“I was going to go with you if we were going to the same place.”
“……”
Eleanor didn’t say anything. She didn’t want to get close to Mackie, and she didn’t want to tell him where she lived.
“Um, are you going to Jerak Street by any chance?”
At that, Eleanor stopped walking. Mackie stopped too. Eleanor finally looked at Mackie.
“How do you know that?”
“Is that right? I just guessed.”
Mackie smiled as if he was surprised. Eleanor stared at him for a moment and then turned her head away. Somehow, that smile was really annoying.
“Let’s go together!”
He stood next to her with a jingle. No matter how fast she walked, Mackie followed Eleanor. Eventually, Eleanor walked at a moderate pace.
Walking fast would only make Mackie catch up quickly and make her legs hurt. Moreover, she couldn’t go around in circles to get to the tram stop because of Mackie.
‘Why do I have to bother?’
So, Eleanor just gave up and walked at a moderate pace. Mackie seemed to be comfortable with that pace, and he said somewhat lightly.
“Do you always get off work at this time?”
Eleanor sighed softly. She didn’t want to answer, but she knew Pitty, so she couldn’t just ignore him. And it wasn’t a difficult answer, so she said as simply as possible.
“Yes.”
“Isn’t work hard?”
“Yes.”
“Would you like to buy my magic orb by any chance?”
“Yes.”
“Really?”
Eleanor was momentarily flustered when Mackie said in surprise. She had just been answering absentmindedly, so the words came out on their own. Eleanor answered quickly.
“No. I misspoke.”
Just then, a tram was coming in the distance, making a noise. Eleanor quickened her pace and looked back at him.
“I can take this tram. Then.”
Eleanor walked quickly so that Mackie wouldn’t follow. Fortunately, Mackie didn’t follow. Eleanor skillfully boarded the crowded tram. There were never any seats at this time, so she had to stand.
As she got on the tram, she saw Mackie. He smiled and waved. Eleanor raised her hand out of courtesy and then lowered it.
He seemed really serious about selling magic orbs. Eleanor was quite embarrassed and unfamiliar because it was the first time she had met someone like that.
Soon, Mackie was out of sight, and familiar street scenes came into view. Eleanor leaned against the handle and stared blankly around.
Even though the sun was setting, many stores were still open, and people were busily coming and going on the street. The good thing about the capital was that it was always so lively. Looking at that, Eleanor felt a sense of vitality rising in her heart without realizing it.
* * *
When she arrived at the mansion, Dreid was not there. Mrs. Beckade was also not there. It had been a long time since the house was empty.
Dinner was already set on the table, as if he had been there.
[Have a good dinner. I think I’ll be late today. – With love, Dreid]
Next to the note was a yellow tulip. Eleanor picked up the yellow tulip and smelled it. It smelled sweet, as if the flower scent had been artificially added. The flower was fresh, as if it had just been picked.
Eleanor took her eyes off the flower and looked at the center of the table. There was a vase in the center, and the flowers were mostly lively.
Eleanor put the tulip in the vase in the center of the table. The flowers shook for a moment as the yellow tulip went in.
And all that was left was the note. Eleanor fiddled with the note and then folded it neatly again. Normally, she would have brought up the note and flowers and called Dreid right away. But now Eleanor just sat in the dining chair.
She thought of Dreid she saw at the Finn Bank during the day. It was a different side of Dreid than she saw here. So was the surrounding atmosphere.
Why did he hide it?
Why didn’t he bother to say that?
Is there something I shouldn’t know?
Numerous hypotheses and questions were mixed in her mind. But none of them were accurate. They were all just expectations and suspicions.
And the delicious food and short note on the table were still the same. Before and now.
So, Eleanor was even more confused. Only she had changed.
Eleanor was about to pick up a fork, but she put it down again. He had clearly prepared it with care, but somehow she didn’t feel like eating this food. It was easier to make that decision because Dreid wasn’t there.
Eleanor put the food on the table into the trash can one by one. The uneaten food was piled up in the empty can.
Eleanor ate a few apples and went up to the bedroom. She was quite tired today, so she wanted to rest in bed.
Only Eleanor’s footsteps were heard around her. Strangely, even Mrs. Beckade was not seen today, so the mansion seemed so quiet and lonely.
‘Did he tell her to go in early today?’
Dreid’s intention was clear. But Eleanor didn’t think deeply about it because she didn’t need Mrs. Beckade right now. Even if Mrs. Beckade was there, she would have gone home after dinner.
Eleanor went into the bedroom, changed her clothes simply, and washed her body. And she sat on the head of the bed and opened the book she had been reading before. It was about a woman looking for her lost daughter, and it wasn’t a very interesting story, but it was a book she kept reading.
‘It’s definitely not fun.’
Strangely, her hand went to the next page. Eleanor was holding the book like that for a long time. Then she suddenly looked up and looked at the clock.
Eleven o’clock in the afternoon.
Quite a long time had passed. Eleanor closed the book she was reading. Dreid had never come in this late.
‘…Is something wrong?’
As soon as she thought that, Eleanor got up from her seat. She was confused by Dreid’s appearance at the bank, but it seemed that her feelings for him had not faded at all. Just worrying about him while looking out the window was proof of that.
‘Should I call him?’
Eleanor looked at the street with only streetlights. The lights were also on in the garden, but they were dim. The street visible from the window was quiet because it was late.
Then, in the distance, she saw a carriage coming with a bright light. The carriage stopped in front of the mansion quite quickly.
Soon, someone got out of the carriage. His neat appearance was visible even from a distance. Eleanor turned around and checked the clock again.
It hadn’t been more than a few minutes. Dreid appeared earlier than she thought, considering she was worried about him.
‘What made him late?’
She was even more curious because Dreid had rarely done this. Eleanor went downstairs without hesitation.
