My Hated Roommate Is Actually My Boyfriend?! - Chapter 3
“So, Feng Xingyun…”
In the haze of his desperate struggle to stay conscious, the last words he had heard echoed through his mind again and again.
He couldn’t grasp the specific content, and his injuries didn’t allow him to process it instantly. In the repeated replaying, each sentence was gradually filled in according to logic.
“Click.”
The hospital ward door was gently opened. Liu Duanhe suddenly opened his eyes. The words that had echoed through his dreams made it feel like he had been dreaming all night, his body drained of all strength. The worst part was his head, so dizzy that his face was pale and he felt like vomiting.
The person at the door paused silently, then closed the door and walked in, asking knowingly: “You’re awake?”
Liu Duanhe’s mind raced through memories like a revolving lantern. He frowned in silence. When his memories reached university, matching names to faces, that conversation immediately rang out again.
“Feng Xingyun, you like Liu Duanhe?”
“He’s a good person. Don’t hold prejudice against us.”
“Are you saying you like him?”
“Yes, I’m his boyfriend.”
“So, Feng Xingyun, you two are in that kind of relationship.”
The prejudice was because they were both men. Although university was relatively open and accepting, quite a few men had confessed to Liu Duanhe, there were always those who couldn’t accept it. The person asking was probably one of those who couldn’t, and yet he and Feng Xingyun were actually lovers.
When had they gotten together?
Liu Duanhe had never thought he would fall for anyone. He had always assumed he would probably spend his life alone. But his university memories were strangely blurry, like a revolving lantern on fast-forward, passing by before he could even see them clearly.
He still found their relationship hard to believe.
Liu Duanhe paused, then said hesitantly: “Feng Xingyun?”
Feng Xingyun noticed his expression was off and asked: “How do you feel?”
Liu Duanhe slowly sat up, leaning against the hospital bed. He answered honestly: “My head is very dizzy. I feel nauseous.”
Feng Xingyun frowned and said: “The doctor said you have a concussion. The wound doesn’t need stitches though.”
The blood earlier had genuinely scared him, turned out it was just a superficial cut.
Feng Xingyun and Liu Duanhe weren’t close enough for him to know his parents’ phone numbers, so he couldn’t contact them. But he also couldn’t in good conscience leave Liu Duanhe alone in the hospital. While thinking about it, he selectively ignored Zhao Yi’s existence, after all, someone with ill intentions toward Liu Duanhe… he couldn’t in good conscience leave him with Zhao Yi.
Besides, he didn’t have the habit of doing good deeds anonymously.
Liu Duanhe smiled gently, his phoenix eyes naturally upturned at the corners, bright and beautiful like spring flowers. “Thank you for bringing me to the hospital. How much did you pay for the hospitalization? I’ll pay you back.”
Feng Xingyun hadn’t forgotten their strained relationship. He said without any pretense: “I sent you the bill on WeChat.”
Even with his headache, Liu Duanhe’s intelligence hadn’t dropped. He remained watertight: “Sorry, my phone and cards are in the dormitory. Could I borrow your phone? I’ll call my butler to bring me a new one.”
The moment Feng Xingyun saw Liu Duanhe’s smile, he realized he had become fake and boring again. He leaned back in the chair with a bored expression, no longer having any desire to continue the conversation. Handing his phone to Liu Duanhe, he took out another phone and started playing games.
Liu Duanhe paid no attention to his disregard. Even though he believed Feng Xingyun was his boyfriend, after all, all kinds of people existed in the world, if they weren’t compatible, they could break up.
Besides, Feng Xingyun had saved him this time. For that alone, Liu Duanhe could raise his tolerance slightly.
But when it came to lovers, Liu Duanhe believed that any problem should be spoken out loud and communicated. He didn’t care about his attitude right now, but it needed to be said to be resolved, so it wouldn’t become a lingering accusation later.
Feng Xingyun had just opened his game. He remembered he had been playing before he left, and the match was definitely over by now. He tapped on his notifications and let out a sigh of relief, luckily his teammates hadn’t reported him given his early contributions, so his account was still intact.
Just then, he heard Liu Duanhe say out of nowhere: “Why did your attitude suddenly change? Did I do something to upset you?”
Feng Xingyun looked up in surprise. He hadn’t expected Liu Duanhe to be so direct. According to his usual nature, shouldn’t he have pretended not to notice his attitude?
He touched his nose. Feng Xingyun had always said what was on his mind, hated beating around the bush, and disdained lying or hiding things. He said directly: “Your smile just now was too fake. It was like a standard smile you’d practiced in front of a mirror more than ten thousand times, pretty enough, but completely devoid of emotion.”
Liu Duanhe pressed his lips together, instinctively touching the slight upward curve at the corners of his mouth.
He apologized: “Alright, my bad.”
Feng Xingyun was even more surprised. He had assumed that, given Liu Duanhe’s personality, he would use his usual gentle facade to deflect the question like a tai chi master, but he hadn’t expected him to show such sincerity.
Liu Duanhe, believing the misunderstanding had been cleared up, immediately dialed the butler’s number.
Not long after he hung up, the butler arrived at the hospital room. Fortunately, Feng Xingyun had arranged a private room for him, this public hospital didn’t have VIP wards.
The impeccably dressed butler stepped into the room, surveyed the surroundings, and his voice immediately choked up. Clutching the bags in his hands, he rushed to Liu Duanhe’s bedside, his voice thick with distress. “Young Master, you’ve really suffered.”
“On my way here, I already notified the private hospital under the family’s name. We’ll transfer you right away.”
As he spoke, a bodyguard by the door wheeled in a wheelchair. Liu Duanhe had long been unable to tolerate the conditions here. His almost fastidious demands for quality of life made him exponentially harder to please, though he generally didn’t show it.
The old butler had worked for their family for decades, serving since his grandfather’s generation. He had essentially watched Liu Duanhe grow up, knew his temperament inside and out, and truly doted on him like a grandson. Just hearing about this over the phone had made the old butler’s heart ache.
He gave a signal, and suddenly eight bodyguards crowded into the room, squeezing eleven people into a single private ward.
“Young Master, while you’re hospitalized, they’ll stay with you. Whatever you need, just tell them.”
One step out the door, eight feet follow. The last time Feng Xingyun had witnessed such a spectacle was in Dream of the Red Chamber with the Jia family.
This extravagant display had completely captured Feng Xingyun’s attention. His family were merchants who had seized the opportunities of their era and made their fortune starting from his parents’ generation. They were nothing like the Liu family, who had been formidable before the founding of the nation and had merely lowered their profile afterward, extremely pragmatic, yet still wielding immense influence behind the scenes.
His family was currently riding a wave of success, but they’d only been wealthy for a little over a decade. Feng Xingyun was used to living rough, and he couldn’t help but be astounded by Liu Duanhe’s entourage. His own family could probably be called upper-class, he supposed, even on the books, but this was another level entirely.
“The blue bag contains your clothes, washed, dried, and sterilized this morning. The red bag has your phone.”
The old butler wore a courteous smile identical to Liu Duanhe’s. He walked over to Feng Xingyun, who was sitting on the sofa, and made pleasantries: “Thank you, young friend, for bringing our young master to the hospital.”
His eyes were sharp as a hawk’s, and his full head of white hair hadn’t dulled his memory. He smiled warmly. “You must be from the Feng family, aren’t you? Thank you for looking after our young master.”
He pulled a card from his pocket and presented it solemnly. “This is our family’s gratitude. No password needed, there’s five million on it. I heard you enjoy cars, young friend. Please, have some fun with it.”
The old butler spoke modestly, but Feng Xingyun wasn’t about to dismiss five million. His parents had built everything from nothing and lived frugally, spending only on what was needed to keep up appearances, and nothing more. The same went for Feng Xingyun. Apart from the car his parents had given him when he came of age, every vehicle he owned had been bought with saved-up allowance and New Year money, none of them exceeding five million.
The Liu family heir’s body was indeed precious beyond measure, even his butler could casually produce five million as a token of thanks.
Feng Xingyun accepted the card. Liu Duanhe watched the exchange with no reaction whatsoever. His mind was on something else entirely. Slightly tense, he asked the old butler, “Does Grandfather know I’m in the hospital?”
He leaned forward slightly in his wheelchair.
The old butler shook his head under his gaze, and Liu Duanhe let out a breath of relief. “I took the call away from the old master and quietly arranged for the bodyguards.”
“The old master can’t handle any shocks right now. I wouldn’t dare let him know.”
Liu Duanhe’s handsome face dimmed with a hint of melancholy. He nodded. “You must keep it from Grandfather. Don’t let him find out I was hurt.”
The old butler hurried off to handle the transfer paperwork. Liu Duanhe hesitated over how to arrange things for Feng Xingyun. After all, he was his boyfriend, but he wasn’t sure his grandfather could accept that yet, so they certainly couldn’t go public.
Fortunately, Feng Xingyun broke the deadlock himself. He stood up, as oblivious to social cues as ever, and said bluntly, “I already requested leave from the counselor for you at the academy, afternoon and evening. Since your butler’s here to take care of you, I’ll head back first.”
Liu Duanhe nodded. That worked, saved him from having to come up with an excuse.
Feng Xingyun went downstairs with them and parted ways at the entrance.
Zhao Yi, having just grabbed takeout from the hospital cafeteria, returned to Liu Duanhe’s room to find the bed stripped and the room empty.
Feng Xingyun had completely forgotten about Zhao Yi’s existence, and Liu Duanhe, having been barely conscious, only had a vague recollection of him.
From the moment he woke up, Feng Xingyun had completely avoided mentioning that there was another person present.
Zhao Yi called Feng Xingyun first, and it wasn’t until then that he realized Liu Duanhe had been transferred to another hospital. Gritting his teeth, he asked, “Did you push Liu Duanhe out?”
It was only when Feng Xingyun came out to hail a taxi that he remembered Zhao Yi, and just as he thought of him, he received his call.
For some reason, he felt a faint, inexplicable sense of guilt.
