My Gorgeous Neighbor Is Cooking Every Day - Chapter 51
Chapter 51
Jiang Yingyue froze, then chuckled and said, “Why did you suddenly forget my name? Did you call me ‘Jiejie’ too many times?”
“Ah?” Xia Xingye rubbed her head in confusion. “Jiejie, you haven’t told me your name yet.”
The moment she woke up, she was in that strange place. She was so anxious and focused on survival that she forgot to ask for the name. Now that the danger was gone, she was eager to know the name.
Jiang Yingyue’s words confused Xia Xingye. Had she said her name at some point and Xia Xingye had forgotten?
Xia Xingye was blaming herself for having forgotten, but she saw Jiang Yingyue across from her frowning.
“What’s wrong? Does your wound hurt? I’ll call the doctor.” Xia Xingye anxiously stood up.
“No,” Jiang Yingyue waited for Xia Xingye to sit down before saying solemnly, “Do you still remember Mi An and the others?”
Xia Xingye hesitated, “I remember. Weren’t they just here?”
“How long have you known them?” Jiang Yingyue asked.
“Just met them,” Xia Xingye replied.
Jiang Yingyue sighed and said softly, “It’s okay. It doesn’t matter if you’ve forgotten. You’ll remember.”
“Jiejie, I really don’t understand what you’re saying.”
Hearing Jiang Yingyue’s words, Xia Xingye felt inexplicably uneasy. Jiang Yingyue spoke as if she had forgotten something important.
Xia Xingye didn’t want Jiang Yingyue to be unhappy. She whispered, “Jiejie, if you’re unhappy about something, let’s talk about it later. Let’s not bring it up now.”
Jiang Yingyue wasn’t anxious. Xia Xingye simply couldn’t recall her in a short time. She would remember her eventually.
Her blind confidence in Xia Xingye came entirely from the love she felt emanating from Xia Xingye.
Xia Xingye loved her so much that she wouldn’t bear to forget her.
“Do you not have classes these two days?” Jiang Yingyue asked about school.
“Ah?” Xia Xingye hesitated, then rubbed her head and said, “I think so.”
She couldn’t quite remember the last few days. Before she saw Jiang Yingyue, she seemed to be attending classes at school as usual. She didn’t know if her application to move out of the school had been approved.
Xia Xingye asked curiously, ignoring the subject of classes, “Jiejie, where do you live? I need to move soon. Maybe I can move to your apartment complex.”
Jiang Yingyue smiled and nodded, “Sure. Once I’m discharged, you can move to my complex.”
She looked at Xia Xingye, curious about what Xia Xingye’s expression would be when she realized that Jiang Yingyue lived right next door.
Would she stare blankly like the first time they met, only regaining her ability to speak after a long moment?
Xia Xingye was so excited that her legs shook. She stayed in the ward with Jiang Yingyue for a while. When Jiang Yingyue got tired and fell asleep, she turned to find the doctor.
She asked when Jiang Yingyue could be discharged. The doctor spoke frankly, “Ideally, one month. Of course, you can be discharged early if you want. Just be careful at home and don’t let the patient lift heavy objects or anything.”
Xia Xingye immediately calmed down after hearing this and said seriously, “Can you make it two months for me?”
It took the doctor a moment to realize Xia Xingye was asking for Jiang Yingyue to be hospitalized for two months. He chuckled and said, “I understand you want the patient to rest more, but many places in the hospital aren’t as convenient as home. It’s not suitable for long-term recovery.”
“That seems right…”
Xia Xingye didn’t do anything in the end. She dutifully followed the doctor’s advice to let Jiang Yingyue stay in the hospital for a month first. If the situation was bad or worsened, she would consider other options.
Due to the injuries, there were many dietary restrictions. Especially in the first few days, the main focus was on intravenous fluids, supplemented by small amounts of light, liquid food.
The ward was a double room. After a few days, a middle-aged woman moved in. Soon after she arrived, a group of friends followed, carrying large bags. The small ward instantly turned into a tea party.
“Excuse me, could you please keep it down? We’re trying to rest here.”
The chatting immediately stopped. One of them said impatiently, “Such a fuss. We’re not talking very loud.”
Xia Xingye wanted to say something more, but Jiang Yingyue held her hand, gently shaking her head and saying, “It’s fine. I’m not very sleepy.”
Since she said that, Xia Xingye said nothing more.
Although the person in the neighboring bed was impatient, their voices gradually quieted down. Occasionally, someone could be heard repeating a sentence.
After listening for a while, Xia Xingye realized that one of the aunties had poor hearing and couldn’t hear if they didn’t speak loudly.
Xia Xingye immediately felt ashamed. They weren’t deliberately speaking loudly; their companion couldn’t hear otherwise.
She whispered to Jiang Yingyue, “Jiejie, should we switch rooms?”
“Whatever you decide,” Jiang Yingyue said.
Xia Xingye immediately went to ask the nurse. Confirming that beds weren’t scarce and that she would be staying in the ward for a long time to accompany Jiang Yingyue, she simply requested a room change.
As they were moving, the aunties looked at them in surprise, “Where are you going?”
One asked worriedly, “Are we too noisy?”
One patted her and said, “Alas, it’s fine. We’ll just speak more quietly.”
One of the aunties looked at them confusedly, “What’s wrong with them? Did you say something?”
Another auntie said loudly, “Nothing much. They suddenly want to switch rooms. We’ll tell you what happened after we find out.”
“It’s nothing. I just need to be a caregiver, and if we switch rooms, I can have a bed to sleep in at night.”
Hearing Xia Xingye say it wasn’t their fault, the aunties sighed in relief and then went to explain to the hard-of-hearing aunty.
Xia Xingye helped Jiang Yingyue get out of bed, a nerve-wracking process the whole time.
Jiang Yingyue said helplessly, “I’m just getting out of bed to walk a few steps, not going to war.”
“The doctor said you need a month of observation. It’s so serious. Will that be easier than going to war?”
Xia Xingye was not satisfied with Jiang Yingyue’s statement. In her eyes, it wasn’t as simple as walking a few steps; it was clearly like walking to the execution ground.
The aunties, seeing Xia Xingye so nervous, exchanged looks and quickly came over, “We’ll help you.”
Xia Xingye was about to refuse, but an auntie had already picked up the thermos flask placed aside.
Seeing that they were all efficient and didn’t seem to have any mobility issues, she nodded and said, “Thank you for your help.”
They moved Jiang Yingyue to a new spot, which was just the room next door.
After Jiang Yingyue walked over, she lay down, her eyes starting to close. Xia Xingye waited for her to fall asleep before quietly leaving the ward.
After leaving the ward, she glanced at the next door. The people in the next ward were still chatting. Seeing Xia Xingye, they beckoned her in. Their impatient demeanor was gone. They asked Xia Xingye, “What happened to that young lady? She’s so young, why does it seem so serious?”
“There was a little accident.” Xia Xingye didn’t elaborate, vaguely explaining that she couldn’t tell them that she was captured by some strange lunatic to avoid scaring these elderly people into sleepless nights.
Since Xia Xingye wasn’t willing to say, they didn’t force her.
They enthusiastically shared with Xia Xingye what to eat and what not to eat after an injury, even more detailed than the doctor. Xia Xingye smiled and agreed to everything.
During this time, Xia Xingye went back to check on Jiang Yingyue every now and then. Seeing that Jiang Yingyue was still sleeping, she returned to them.
A few aunties joked, “Anyone who didn’t know would think she’s your biological sister. You go check on her every few minutes.”
“We’re closer than biological sisters,” Xia Xingye said earnestly. “She’s the most important person to me besides my parents.”
Xia Xingye deliberately concealed her feelings for Jiang Yingyue.
She knew that not everyone accepted same-sex love, especially older people.
An auntie asked, “Are you two a couple?”
At this question, everyone froze and looked at her.
That auntie said, “What are you afraid of? What era is this? What does it matter whether you like men or women?”
Hearing her say this, the other aunties immediately reacted. Although a bit uncomfortable, they quickly comforted Xia Xingye, “It’s alright. If anyone bullies you because of this, tell us aunties, and we’ll scold them for you.”
Xia Xingye smiled and agreed, “It’s okay. I’ve seen it before…”
She suddenly stopped speaking, her mind blank, yet she felt as if she had seen or even known people in the same situation as her. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember. She rubbed her head in confusion.
“Are you not sleeping well?” an auntie asked.
“Go to sleep. We haven’t seen you sleep much since you arrived. How can your body handle this?”
The aunties collectively chased Xia Xingye out of the ward.
Xia Xingye tiptoed back to Jiang Yingyue’s side. Jiang Yingyue was still asleep.
She sat on the bed next to her, frowning. The past few days of interaction, and how familiar Jiang Yingyue seemed with her, didn’t feel like they had only just met.
Had they really met before?
She desperately wanted to know what had happened between them and why she had forgotten everything about Jiang Yingyue.
She sat in the ward for an hour. Jiang Yingyue was still sleeping peacefully.
Xia Xingye quietly left the ward, subconsciously wanting to find the two girls and the one child who had helped her earlier, but after thinking about it, she couldn’t recall their numbers. Helpless, she could only call Xia Wenyao.
“Mom, I think I’ve forgotten something very important,” Xia Xingye said with a troubled face, getting straight to the point.
“Forgotten what? Don’t worry, tell Mom.”
Xia Xingye explained how she met Jiang Yingyue. She didn’t make it sound too bloody. She just said she saw someone being bullied, and she happened to be there, so they left together. But the other person seemed to know her from before, and yet she couldn’t remember at all.
Xia Wenyao chuckled after listening and asked, “What’s her name?”
“Jiang Yingyue,” Xia Xingye said.
Jiang Yingyue hadn’t intended to tell her, but when filling out the patient’s name, she saw Jiang Yingyue’s name. She liked it immediately and felt a sense of familiarity, but she just couldn’t remember when they had met.
“If you don’t remember, you don’t remember. You’ll think of it later.”
“Why are you saying the same thing as her?” Xia Xingye was surprised.
“Alright, if there’s nothing else, Mom is hanging up. Just know that she won’t harm you,” Xia Wenyao said and truly hung up the phone.
Xia Xingye held the phone, silent for a moment.
When she returned to the ward, Jiang Yingyue was already awake. Seeing her enter, she smiled. Her eyes were gentle, and her smile carried the warmth of spring.
Xia Xingye’s agitated mood immediately calmed down somewhat. She instinctively picked up the thermos and asked, “Do you want some water?”
“Were you out making a call just now?”
Xia Xingye’s hand paused. Holding the cotton swab, she still nodded and said, “I went out to make a call and talked with my mom.”
Jiang Yingyue asked again, “Did you talk about me?”
Jiang Yingyue could see what Xia Xingye was thinking in one glance. “I didn’t eavesdrop on the call. You’re just too easy to read.”
“Is that so?” Xia Xingye still found it unbelievable. She never thought she was someone who wore everything on her face.
But looking at Jiang Yingyue, she felt it was normal for Jiang Yingyue to know what she was thinking.
“Want to know? I can tell you.”
