My Gorgeous Neighbor Is Cooking Every Day - Chapter 14
Chapter 14
It took Jiang Yingyue a long moment to turn back and look at her: “You don’t have talent.”
Xia Xingye was puzzled: “Then how can I hear Xiao Jiang talk?”
Jiang Yingyue: “You can hear it talk for other reasons.”
Xia Xingye: “What reason?”
She thought she could hear it because she was talented, so why did Jiang Yingyue deny it? Was it because she didn’t want her to get involved in this field?
Jiang Yingyue’s next words dispelled her worries: “You can hear it because something went wrong on my end, which led to you being able to hear its voice.”
Xia Xingye was speechless. She thought she was truly talented, but it turned out she could only hear Xiao Jiang because of Jiang Yingyue’s mistake.
It made sense. She had just moved next door to Jiang Yingyue when she started hearing Xiao Jiang’s voice. Others hadn’t heard it before, probably because the distance was too great for them to be affected. When she arrived, she just happened to catch Jiang Yingyue’s mistake, and the distance was just right, which was why she could hear Xiao Jiang talking.
“If there’s anything I can help with, you must tell me.” Xia Xingye persisted, “Although I’m just a university student, I might know quite a few people.”
Her family was in business, and her parents had a wide network of connections. Sometimes they would take her to meet their partners, which could be considered her network as well. She couldn’t help in the professional field, but she could help a little with other things.
Jiang Yingyue smiled, her lips curving: “Got it. I won’t be polite if I need your help.”
Hearing her say that, Xia Xingye finally felt a little relieved. She watched Jiang Yingyue leave, then quickly picked up her phone to call Xia Wenyao.
The call was answered quickly. Xia Wenyao asked strangely: “Why are you calling me at this time? Is something wrong? We can talk later, Mom is busy with work right now, if it’s not urgent…”
“Wait a minute,” Xia Xingye quickly said, worried she would hang up: “I need your help with something very important! Very important!”
Xia Wenyao hesitated for a moment, then said: “Alright, tell me.”
Although work was important, her daughter was more important.
Xia Xingye asked tentatively: “Mom, you know so many people, do you know anyone like a Taoist priest or something?”
Xia Wenyao: “Taoist priest? What’s wrong? Do you feel like things haven’t been going smoothly lately? Should Mom take you to a temple?”
Xia Xingye: “No! No! No! I know someone who seems to be a Taoist, but she’s a girl.”
Xia Wenyao laughed: “Why can’t a Taoist be a girl?”
Xia Xingye was stunned. She really hadn’t thought of that: “So, Mom, you mean a Taoist can also be a girl?”
Xia Wenyao: “Yes, why are you a bit strange today?”
Xia Xingye was indeed a little confused, repeatedly confirming, only because she didn’t want Jiang Yingyue to really be a Taoist. If Jiang Yingyue was a Taoist, then her doing dangerous things would be inevitable. There are many types of Taoists, some might not need to take risks, but Jiang Yingyue clearly seemed like the kind who did. Now she had a more legitimate reason to do dangerous things.
Xia Xingye asked again: “What if she doesn’t want to be a Taoist?”
Xia Wenyao: “Mom doesn’t know. Whether someone doesn’t want to be a Taoist depends on the person. Is the person you know a Taoist?”
Xia Xingye hesitated, then said cautiously: “She should be considered a Taoist, but I haven’t seen her wear a uniform or live in a Taoist temple.”
“Are you just asking if a Taoist can be a girl?”
“No!” Xia Xingye quickly said, “I have other things. I want to ask if you know any other Taoists? I want to talk to them.”
If she knew other Taoists, she might be able to find out things that Jiang Yingyue was unwilling to tell her.
“You really care about her.” Xia Wenyao was a little surprised. Even though Xia Xingye hadn’t told her, she guessed it was Xia Xingye’s new friend.
Although Xia Xingye could get along with anyone if she wanted to, she had never heard of Xia Xingye having any friends in the metaphysical field before.
Calling her suddenly, and sounding so anxious, and caring so much about someone she had only recently met, was truly rare.
Xia Wenyao’s philosophy for Xia Xingye’s upbringing was that Xia Xingye should be able to stand on her own feet. She could make friends on her own, but she had to be prepared and not easily open up to people.
Judging by Xia Xingye’s tone, her relationship with the Taoist she mentioned seemed quite close.
Getting along so well in such a short time, she was a little worried.
“Could it be…” She stopped halfway through her sentence.
Xia Xingye could tell what she meant: “Mom, are you trying to ask if I’m under some kind of spell, which is why I care about her so much?”
“How could that be? I’m just curious. You know, Mom, I’m always very interested in these unfamiliar things.”
Xia Wenyao on the other end of the phone nodded. Xia Xingye had always been very curious.
“Alright, I’ll check around. If I find any, I’ll send them to you.”
Xia Xingye nodded repeatedly, then happily coaxed her a bit more: “I knew Mom is the best person in the world. Next time Mom has a vacation, I’ll definitely spend it with you.”
“Alright, you smooth talker.” Xia Wenyao said with a laugh.
When she was free, Xia Xingye might not necessarily have free time.
After hanging up the phone, Xia Xingye felt much more at ease. She looked at her phone feeling a little uncomfortable. She also realized that her concern for Jiang Yingyue was not ordinary, almost like she was obsessed, but she didn’t think there was any problem.
Jiang Yingyue was so beautiful, had such a good personality, and was kind to her. There was nothing wrong with her liking Jiang Yingyue.
Even if her mother wanted her to visit a temple, she wasn’t afraid. She believed Jiang Yingyue hadn’t done anything to her.
Xia Xingye was a little distracted all afternoon. She originally wanted to be discharged, but then she thought that if she was discharged, Jiang Yingyue wouldn’t bring her dinner, nor would she stay away from missions out of concern for her injury.
From Xiao Jiang’s tone, Jiang Yingyue had postponed a mission that required a long absence, and the one she was currently doing should be simpler.
In the evening, Jiang Yingyue came to see her as expected, bringing a richly stewed chicken soup. Xia Xingye was so touched she was almost in tears.
Although her mother was very good to her, she was very busy with work and hadn’t cooked much for her, let alone stewed soup.
Xia Xingye sniffed, looking at Jiang Yingyue pitifully: “I wish you could cook for me all the time.”
Jiang Yingyue looked at her blankly. Xia Xingye quickly explained: “I’m not asking you to be my nanny, I’m just very happy that someone is cooking for me.”
Even if Jiang Yingyue wasn’t willing to do it, Xia Xingye was still very happy, because Jiang Yingyue did it today.
Even if Jiang Yingyue only cooked once a year, Xia Xingye would be touched. Her mother didn’t even cook for her once a year, always busy outside. Her father was the same, sometimes even busier than her mother.
They both worked at the same company, in a sense, in a subordinate-superior relationship. It could have been equal, but her father felt he wasn’t good enough and that the position required more dedication, so he didn’t agree to the promotion and was content to work under her mother.
Besides his own work, he also handled Xia Wenyao’s other trivial matters. Busy with this and that, his rest time was even less than Xia Wenyao’s.
They were genuinely busy with work and didn’t mean to neglect her, so Xia Xingye had no reason to be angry.
When she was little, she had certainly thrown tantrums: Why weren’t Mom and Dad at home? Was work more important than her?
She was angry at the time, but soon received a call from Xia Wenyao.
People kept calling Xia Wenyao to work, but Xia Wenyao turned them all down, seriously coaxing Xia Xingye and promising her many things.
Of course, not including being with her. She promised to take Xia Xingye to the amusement park when she had a vacation and to visit her when passing by Xia Xingye’s school.
In short, she would visit Xia Xingye whenever she had free time.
Xia Wenyao’s attitude was sincere, not that she genuinely wanted to abandon her. Even if Xia Xingye was reluctant, she could only accept it.
Later, Xia Xingye started boarding school in junior high, and it was the same in high school. Now, even if Xia Wenyao and her husband had a vacation, they couldn’t spend time with Xia Xingye. Fortunately, they were all used to it. They now had their own lives and didn’t have time to dwell on whether they had time to spend with each other.
Xia Xingye ate the food Jiang Yingyue brought her, vaguely expressing her gratitude: “Sister, bring me some more next time.”
Jiang Yingyue didn’t stop Xia Xingye from calling her “Sister.” Age-wise, she was indeed older than Xia Xingye, so it wasn’t wrong for Xia Xingye to call her Sister.
After eating, Xia Xingye leaned back on the bed, feeling content and emotional: “If only it could be like this every day.”
She glanced at her leg, which wasn’t seriously injured. The doctor had come in the afternoon and said she was fine and could be discharged anytime she wanted.
For a moment, Xia Xingye thought about pretending to be sick forever so Jiang Yingyue would keep cooking for her, but then she thought it was too despicable. If Jiang Yingyue found out, she wouldn’t like her and might even get angry.
Xia Xingye didn’t want that to happen, so she dropped the idea, considering her words: “How about we take turns cooking from now on?”
After all, they had briefly lived together before.
Although her cooking wasn’t the best, it wasn’t bad either, just not as delicious as Jiang Yingyue’s.
Jiang Yingyue: “I’m not home for long periods.”
Xia Xingye pretended not to know she was out doing ghost-catching and exorcism: “Call me beforehand when you come back, and I’ll cook. If you’re home, then you cook, how about that?”
Jiang Yingyue thought there was no problem with that. She usually cooked for herself anyway. Adding Xia Xingye was just an extra pair of chopsticks, so she nodded in agreement.
Xia Xingye was a little excited. Seeing Jiang Yingyue standing by, she reached out and pulled her, making her sit by the bed before saying: “What did you do this afternoon?”
She looked at Jiang Yingyue with curiosity and anticipation, her eyes sparkling: “Can you tell me?”
Jiang Yingyue hadn’t intended to say anything, but with Xia Xingye looking at her like that, she hesitated: “It’s nothing interesting.”
“Maybe you find it boring, but I really want to know what you do for work normally?” She genuinely wanted to know about Jiang Yingyue and was also curious about ghost-catching.
“Today, a girl was cursed with a love spell, and I went to take a look.”
Xia Xingye’s eyes widened: “Do love spells really exist?”
