Chapter 15: Bo Yu’s Collar Was Continually Pulled Open…
The rooftop terrace was actually a beautiful rooftop garden. Old Mrs. Bo loved tending to flowers and plants; there was a famous florist in the city called “Butterfly” whose owner often came in person to maintain the seasonal blooms for the old lady.
At the end of August, orange marigolds, bright red geraniums, pink balsams, and pure white jasmine were in full bloom, their fragrance overflowing like a picturesque sea of flowers.
The lights in the courtyard had all gone out, but a few tiny lights in the garden remained lit. Amidst this garden of lush blossoms, Bo Yu sat on a high stool, holding a glass of red wine. She looked up in delight at the shimmering galaxy and Xie Yinwan, though the more she looked, the more her heart raced with trepidation.
The night sky was deep and vast, with silver moonlight casting a cool, ethereal glow. The stars flickered and intertwined, and Xie Yinwan, descending from above, truly looked like a mysterious deity bridging the gap between heaven and earth.
However, the “Immortal’s” expression was very cold.
“My god, Bo Yu, did you enchant your words? The moment you finished speaking, all the lights in the courtyard went out!” Bo Mi was utterly astonished.
Bo Yu managed a strained smile. “Perhaps an Immortal is helping us.”
She knew Xie Yinwan was prideful, so the ghost definitely hadn’t extinguished the lights just to make her happy; it was likely just a whim to showcase her ghostly power. Especially since Xie Yinwan’s expression was so icy right now. It was even less likely to be for Bo Yu’s sake.
Xie Yinwan, who had actually turned off the lights specifically to make Bo Yu happy, continued to glare at her coldly.
“Oh, an ‘Immortal,'” Bo Mi laughed, patting Bo Yu’s leg. “Since it’s such a coincidence, have a sip, little devotee of the Immortal.”
Bo Yu and Bo Mi clinked glasses with a smile. Bo Mi took a hearty gulp, while Bo Yu pretended to take a tiny sip. As Bo Mi looked back up at the starry river, Bo Yu cautiously stole a glance at Xie Yinwan.
Xie Yinwan floated gracefully in the air, looking down from her high vantage point at Bo Yu, who was giving her an awkward, fawning smile. Under the moonlight, the human and the ghost gazed at each other for a long time; time seemed to freeze, or perhaps it was stretched out infinitely.
After a long while, the corners of Xie Yinwan’s lips finally curled up slightly.
However, perhaps because she was a ghost, the smile on her face wasn’t as pure as Bo Yu’s; it seemed a bit sinister. But even this was a good sign. Bo Yu had read online posts saying that many ghosts have no expressions at all, so Xie Yinwan’s sinister smirk could be counted as a gentle smile. Bo Yu’s nervous heart finally felt some relief.
Suddenly, with a slight kick of her feet, Xie Yinwan drifted toward the roof, her robes fluttering. She floated straight toward… Bo Mi.
Bo Yu: “??”
Xie Yinwan stopped in front of Bo Mi, making a gesture as if she were about to smell her.
Bo Yu immediately slid off her stool and stood in front of her sister. She couldn’t touch Xie Yinwan—she passed right through the ghost’s body—and grabbed Bo Mi’s arms.
Bo Mi: “…What are you doing?”
Bo Yu’s mind raced to find an excuse to send her sister away. “Sis, I’m a little hungry. Could you go to the kitchen and get me a plate of snacks? Since the power is out in the yard, it must be out in the house too. I’m afraid to go down alone.”
While Bo Yu was blocking the front, Xie Yinwan smirked and drifted behind Bo Mi, positioning herself to smell the back of Bo Mi’s neck.
Startled, Bo Yu quickly pulled Bo Mi off the stool, causing the wine in Bo Mi’s hand to slosh violently. Bo Yu acted spoiled: “Sis, go quickly, I’m hungry.”
She knew her sister was brave; forget a power outage, if a robber broke in during a blackout, Bo Mi would be the first to charge.
Bo Mi looked at Bo Yu strangely. “You’re acting a bit odd.”
Bo Yu: “Maybe I can’t handle the wine.”
Bo Mi: “…” That was true; Bo Yu wasn’t much of a drinker.
Bo Mi was completely unaware of what was happening. “Well, do you dare stay up here on the roof by yourself? It’s pitch black.”
“I do,” Bo Yu pushed Bo Mi toward the door. “Go on, Sis. I didn’t eat much for dinner.”
“But didn’t you eat nearly a whole plate of celery?”
“…Vegetables aren’t filling!”
Bo Mi laughed, letting Bo Yu push her forward while continuing to tease her.
Xie Yinwan, however, drifted alongside Bo Mi, intending to follow her downstairs.
Bo Yu’s eyes widened to their limit. she immediately moved to the other side to hug her sister, while looking back at Xie Yinwan, waving her hands and silently pleading.
Xie Yinwan arched an eyebrow.
Bo Yu begged and bowed.
In Xie Yinwan’s eyes, this “sister” looked like she was winking at her. Finally, the ghost stopped following and floated back to where the two had been drinking.
Bo Yu breathed a sigh of relief. Seeing Bo Mi enter the house, she returned to the table. She was anxious and annoyed inside, but she didn’t dare show a hint of it. She smiled and greeted Xie Yinwan: “Immortal, good evening.”
Xie Yinwan leaned down to smell the wine, her voice icy: “This Immortal is not ‘good’.”
Bo Yu: “?”
Bo Yu asked cautiously: “Immortal, did I do something wrong?”
Xie Yinwan coldly uttered two words: “Talisman pouch.”
Bo Yu: “?”
She was shocked that Xie Yinwan knew she had accepted Jin Xuan’s talisman pouch. But Xie Yinwan had never said she couldn’t take one; she only said to avoid wearing things Jin Xuan gave her.
Bo Yu hurriedly explained: “I’m sorry, Immortal. I put it in my bag out of politeness that day. Then I was busy at work and forgot to throw it away. I didn’t bring it back to defend against you—absolutely not! I’ll go throw it away right now. Please don’t be angry.”
Xie Yinwan ignored her, her aura remaining cold.
Bo Yu pleaded: “I’m sorry, Immortal. I’m truly sorry. I swear that from now on, I won’t accept anything except the things on my hands. No pouches, nothing else. If I take anything else, you can kill me, okay?”
Xie Yinwan remained silent.
Bo Yu bowed slightly, continuing carefully: “Immortal, was it you who turned off the lights in the yard just now?”
Xie Yinwan finally spoke, saying nonchalantly: “I didn’t turn off the lights. I simply used my Qi to envelop the light they emitted.”
Ah? You can do that?
Since Xie Yinwan was speaking again, Bo Yu’s tension eased. Her eyes darted around, and she suddenly said excitedly: “Then, Immortal, can you also use your Qi to envelop my family’s security cameras and the guards’ eyes? Oh, and my windows? Can you envelop them too?”
“Something on your mind?”
Bo Yu explained: “My family has never let me go out at night, but I’ve always wanted to. Can you help take me out of the gates without my family noticing?”
Xie Yinwan raised her head slightly. “Why don’t they let you out at night?”
Bo Yu: “A fortune teller said my constitution is weak, and if I go out, I might see ghosts…”
Is that why you can see me? The question almost slipped out of Xie Yinwan’s mouth, but she called herself an Immortal, so she couldn’t ask that.
“How long have they kept you in at night?”
“Over ten years.”
“…”
“Did you see them when you were little? Many of them?”
“No, you are the first.”
Xie Yinwan narrowed her eyes.
“Wait, no,” Bo Yu corrected herself quickly. “You aren’t a ghost, you are an Immortal. So I’ve never seen a ghost.”
Xie Yinwan lowered her head to sniff the wine again, looking thoughtful. If this girl hadn’t seen ghosts as a child, why could she see her now that she was grown?
“I can extinguish the light of an entire city. Just beg me when you need it,” Xie Yinwan said. Her tone was one of casual composure.
Bo Yu was so excited she wanted to shout “Immortal, you’re amazing!”, but fearing she’d be heard downstairs, she whispered: “Immortal, you are too amazing!”
She was now certain that Xie Yinwan would help her find her mother. Her tone was a mix of excitement, anticipation, and gratitude.
“Why wouldn’t you let me smell your sister?” Xie Yinwan looked up from the wine glass, her gaze indifferent.
Bo Yu: “…Because I am more fragrant than my sister.”
Bo Yu felt a bit guilty saying this. She couldn’t really smell any fragrance on herself, but she could always smell a scent on Bo Mi—not a heavy perfume, but a light, lingering fragrance that made people want to smell it again. She was deathly afraid that Xie Yinwan would get addicted to her sister’s scent.
Bo Yu stepped two paces closer to Xie Yinwan, tilting her neck slightly and offering an invitation: “Immortal, why don’t you try smelling me? I’m even more fragrant than I was yesterday.”
The moment she said it, Bo Yu felt unnatural again. Who invites a ghost to smell them? Her courage was indeed growing.
Xie Yinwan laughed softly and drifted in front of Bo Yu. She wrapped her hands around Bo Yu’s waist and pressed her cheek close to Bo Yu’s neck, sniffing carefully.
Bo Yu tensed up unconsciously. She could feel the cold shape of arms, palms, and fingertips on her waist, and the wisps of ghostly air blowing against her neck. The strange sensation she felt when Xie Yinwan smelled her lips the other day rose up again. Bo Yu’s spine tingled, and waves of numbness spread from her neck to her limbs, making her hands and feet feel weak.
“What fragrance is this?” Xie Yinwan asked, her lips seemingly brushing against Bo Yu’s delicate, soft skin.
“Rose. I changed to a new body wash.”
“It doesn’t smell good.” Xie Yinwan suddenly let go of her.
Bo Yu was surprised.
Xie Yinwan floated a few feet higher and said coldly: “What I like to smell is your natural scent. Don’t use these strange fragrances next time. Go back to your room and wash it off later.”
Bo Yu found it hard to believe; it was incomprehensible. What kind of scent did she have that even rose fragrance couldn’t compare to?
“Okay,” Bo Yu pulled her pajamas tighter and agreed softly. She couldn’t help but ask, “Immortal, what exactly do I smell like?”
Xie Yinwan said flatly: “A type of fragrance.”
“…” Useless answer, Bo Yu thought grumpily.
“Anyway, Immortal, please don’t smell my sister, okay? I’ll give you another set of beautiful clothes, how about that?” Bo Yu looked up to negotiate.
Xie Yinwan was indifferent: “Besides clothes, is there anything new?”
“Do you want to read? I can send you some books.”
“I don’t recognize your script.”
“…” Right, I forgot. Xie Yinwan is illiterate.
“Xiao Yu?” Bo Mi’s voice came from the door. She was carrying a plate of snacks. “I thought I heard you talking?”
Bo Yu turned and smiled. “No, I was just humming a song.”
She felt that since Xie Yinwan had asked “Is there anything new?”, the matter was negotiable. That was a start.
Bo Mi walked over and set the snacks on the table. “The power isn’t out downstairs, only in the yard. Maybe a circuit breaker tripped.”
“Oh.” Bo Yu nodded and quietly ate a snack.
When Bo Mi and Bo Yu were together, they rarely talked about serious things. It was mostly small talk, zoning out, or just enjoying the comfort of the moment. Bo Mi looked up at the stars and smiled. “So beautiful. Much better than the starlight ceiling in my car.”
Bo Yu glanced back at the beautiful Xie Yinwan, then up at the stars, and replied with a light smile, “It really is.”
The night breeze was gentle and the rooftop was quiet. Bo Yu comfortably squinted as she took a bite of a biscuit, but suddenly she felt a chill on her back—Xie Yinwan had embraced her from behind.
Xie Yinwan’s hands encircled Bo Yu’s waist, and her face was buried in the left side of Bo Yu’s neck. Bo Yu’s pajama collar was being pulled back continuously, and Xie Yinwan’s lips were pressed against her delicate skin.
Bo Yu’s whole body tightened instantly. Her breathing quickened, and her grip on the biscuit tightened.
Just then, Bo Mi said, “Why haven’t you asked me about Hanhan?”
Bo Yu’s head tilted to the right involuntarily, her voice tight: “Oh, right… Sis, where is Hanhan?”
